"ONE MOMENT"

A boy slaps his mother's legs. A pouty expression
dawns on his face.

An exchange between mother and son occur as he pouts
and she chastises him over his recklessness.

I feel the smile litter my face. My eyes flit over
him, the man next to me, to see he is watching me
with intent eyes.

I ask him why he stares so. "You want a child don't
you?" He asks me, as if he is suddenly surprised by
this knowledge. I feel the tears burning my eyes.

"Yes." I choke out. Knowing now that he sees my desire
for an impossible dream. For a few minuets the tears
flow, punctuated by his apologies.

My ailment had never seemed as real as it did that
moment. I don't think it was real to him either. In
one moment, after one observation, it became clear
to both of us that my fervent desire will never be.
