Disclaimer - I don't own them. "I had written that Agent Scully falls in love, but that's obviously impossible. Agent Scully is already in love." I turned away from the cell, feeling my face flame red in embarrassment at the writer's words. I could feel Mulder's eyes on me as we walked away. Maybe he hadn't understood what the man had said. It was possible. But not very possible. Mulder never missed anything. He was one of the FBI's top profilers. Surely he had caught the meaning. But would he believe Paget? Probably not. I breathed a little easier, feeling somewhat comfortable again. We exited the building and went to the car. After we were in the car and he was about to start the engine, he looked at me suddenly with curiosity. "What do you suppose he meant by that?" His eyes caught mine suspiciously. I swallowed hard. "What do you mean? I think he's got a very vivid imagination." I tried to shrug it off. Mulder looked back at the prison and pursed his lips slightly in thought. "But what do you suppose gave him an idea like that?" Mulder's voice was pensive, quiet. Very sexy, I almost allowed myself to think. "I dunno, Mulder. He's a writer. He lives in the fictitious world in his head." "Are you in love with someone, Scully?" Mulder asked me directly after he started the car and pulled out. I didn't answer for a moment, struggling to keep my retort to myself. "Not that I can think of..." I replied, sounding a little too defensive. He sighed. "What, Mulder?" I hated to ask. I could feel my heart pounding. "I don't believe you. You're lying to me. Scully, I would have thought that I of all people would be the first to know if you were interested in..." His voice trailed off. "Well, it seems pretty obvious to me, Mulder!" I threw my hands in the air and exclaimed. He gave me a strange look. "What seems obvious?" He asked in a small voice, as if he was almost afraid to ask. I didn't even notice his reaction. "What do you expect a lonely girl to do when you drag her around the world making her fight your fights and live your quests? You make yourself my only friend, the only person in my life, and you expect me to refrain from falling in love with you?" The words came rushing out like a torrential downpour. His eyes grew larger as I continued with my tirade. "In love with me?" He almost whispered. I suddenly realize he had absolutely no idea that I was falling in love with him. It was ironic, really. Here this truth seeker who was on a mission to sift through the rubble of lies and uncover the hidden truth couldn't even see the truth right in front of his nose. It didn't matter how many flirtatious glances and gestures I had already kicked myself for just this morning. It didn't matter that I was practically throwing myself at his neighbor to make him jealous. It didn't matter that if he asked me to jump off a bridge in a clown suit singing the ABC song as I plunged into a raging deathly current that I'd ask him what key to sing in! I realized I had one last opportunity to protect my secret. I rolled my eyes, sat back and looked out the window. "Yeah, don't you wish, Gullable."
