He stood in the doorway of his darkened bedroom,
silently watching over her. She lay sleeping beneath
the warm blankets, resting comfortably. For the
moment, she was safe from harm. He knew, however,
that the memories and nightmares would haunt her for
many years to come. Even if they did fade eventually,
they could never be completely forgotten.
He walked quietly over to the bed and sat at the very
edge, careful not to wake her. When they had arrived
at his apartment, she did not wish to talk about the
events that had occurred less than two hours ago. She
only wished to sleep. He had led her to the bedroom,
pulled down the covers for her, and tucked her in. He
had kissed her forehead and held her hand until she
had fallen into what he hoped would be a peaceful
slumber. Peace was a concept that would be difficult
for them to attain in the next few days, and things
were undoubtedly going to be rough with the upcoming
investigation. Peace of mind was something neither of
them would feel for perhaps weeks to come.
Brushing back a strand of her hair from her face, he
considered the woman sleeping next to him. Dana
Scully certainly had changed in the past seven years.
He recalled the innocent young woman that had walked
into his life ready to take on the world. Over the
years, he had seen that innocence stripped away as
tragedy upon tragedy bestowed itself on her.
This latest event had scared Fox Mulder more than he
cared to admit. As he watched Donnie Pfaster fall to
the ground in front of him, he could only remember how
shocked he had been that Scully had pulled the
trigger. He knew by the look on her face that she
also could not believe what she had just done. Later,
in her bedroom, he had tried comforting her, but her
own questions had bothered him greatly. Did she truly
think there was evil at work within her? The way he
saw it, seven years of bottled up emotions had finally
burst forth, crashing through the dam she had built up
over time and washing over her. Donnie Pfaster had
pushed Scully too far, and Mulder was certain that
Scully had every right to do what she did. He
understood because he had been there before, and he
would defend her at all costs. He would always be
there for her, lending her his strength and showering
her with support, should she need it. She had stood
by him countless times, and he vowed to do the same
for her. He leaned down to kiss her cheek and smiled
as she mumbled in her sleep. Despite whatever she may
do, she was still the woman he had grown to love. She
would always be Dana Scully, a caring, beautiful human
being, inside and out, who was allowed to make
mistakes only for the reason that she was indeed
human. And no one could ever take that away from her.

Author's Notes:
Orison is probably the most hotly debated episode ever
to air on the X-Files, and I know I touched upon some
serious issues: whether Scully was right to shoot
Pfaster, Mulder claiming she acted out of
self-defense, etc. I hope I have not offended
anyone's opinions by writing this, but I just had to
release some of my own confusion with the episode.
Scully has always been my favorite character in the
X-Files, and she has become an inspiration, as well.
It was difficult to come to terms with the events that
occurred in Orison after looking up to her for so
long. But we must remember that Scully is indeed a
human being, and all human beings are allowed to make
mistakes.
