Author: Kathryn Brown Catagory: SR Rating: PG Keywords: Mulder/Scully Romance Summary: Who wants to do paperwork? Mulder and Scully ditch work and recieve the best holiday gift of all...each other. "Morning Scully," Mulder greeted as Scully walked into their office. "Morning," she replied and proceded to remove her jacket and scarf. "Could it be any colder Mulder?" she asked. Her cheeks were pink from being out it the frigid December air. Mulder smirked. "Well Scully," he began. "It was quite chilly when I took this little vacation to Antarctica a year and a half ago." "Cute Mulder," she shot back an sat down at her desk. "So what's on the agenda for today?" she asked. "Well," he said. "We've got some wondeful piles or paperwork, and after that more paperwork. And if you finish all that, you will be the lucky winner and you'll get to fill out our travel expense papers from the last case." Scully sighed miserably. "Great," she muttered. After a minute, she looked up, more awake than she'd been since she'd woken up that morning. "Hey Mulder, wanna bail with me?" Mulder's eyes shot open in mock surprise. "What?" he began, astonished. "You mean, the no nonsense, by the book, never ditched school a day in her life Dana Katherine Scully wants to ditch work? I think the aliens have already taken over. And they've gotten to you first Scully!" "Scully grinned and grabbed her coat, slipping it on quickly. "Fine," she said. "Have fun filling out our travel expense reports." Mulder stood up quickly and grabbed his own coat. "Hey," he said quickly. "I just said you were the least likely person to ditch work, that doesn't mean I'm not going with you." Scully grinned again, opening the door and walking out. Mulder followed closely behind and with one last nonremorseful look at the piles of papers covering the desks, shut the door firmly and locked it. When the agents had made their way out of headquarters and onto the street, Mulder sighed in overdramatic relief. "Gosh Scully we actually made it out! I thought we were gonna get caught - we'd be sent to Skinner's office for sure!" Scully rolled her eyes but grinned. "You're such a smart ass Mulder," she said. "Yea I know," he responded casually. "So what do you wanna do first?" Scully thought a minute. "You have breakfast this morning?" Mulder shook his head. "I figured," she said. "But good, neither did I. Let's go get something to eat." They quickly found a small restraunt packed into the corner of shops. They hurried inside and slid into a booth. The waitress, a tall pretty blonde, hurried over to her table snapping her gum loudly. "What can I get for you?" she asked perkily. Scully looked up at her, a sinking feeling in her stomach. Just Mulder's kind of woman. She wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he had her number by the time they got their drinks. "Scrambled egg platter," she mumbled. The waitress quickly wrote it down and hurridly tunred to Mulder, eyeing him like he was what she wanted for breakfast. "And for you?" she asked with a huge smile on her face. But to Scully's surprise, Mulder barely ackowledged her. He glanced up at her long enough to order the pancake platter and a cup of coffee for them each. He returned his attention to Scully and smiled at her. To an even bigger surprise, Scully found herself blushing slightly as she smiled back. Seemingly unfazed, the waitress smiled and walked away. Half a minute later, she returned with two steaming cups of coffee. "Here ya go!" she said as she set them down. To Mulder she said. "Be careful now," she said. "I wouldn't want you burning your toungue." Mulder glanced up and nodded. "Yea thanks," he responded quickly. The waitress pouted for a second and turned away to greet new customers that had just entered. "So Scully," Mulder said. "Get all your Christmas shopping done?" Scully shook her head and stirred some sugar into her coffee. "Nope," she replied. "Not yet. I'm still trying to find this battle game for my nephew. I have no idea where to get one. Every toy store I've looked in doesn't have them. Did you play battle games when you were little?" she asked. "But of course," Mulder replied. "I was the best. My favorite weapon was the catapolt." And with that, he placed a sugar packet on a spoon and fired it at Scully. It made a direct hit off her shoulder. She burst out laughing as it fell to the ground. Mulder picked up his cup and gazed intently at her. "What?" she asked, a grin still on her lips. Mulder paused a second before responding. "You should do that more often," he said. "Do what?" she asked. "Laugh," he said before taking a long drink of coffee. 45 minutes later Mulder and Scully walked out of the coffee house. The waitress had been a total bitch after her obvious rejection by Mulder. Scully had secretly loved every second of it. "So where to now oh ditch woman," Mulder asked with a grin. "Your turn to pick somewhere," Scully offered. Now it was Mulder's turn to stop and think. "Well," he said. "Why don't we go to the mall and you can finish Christmas shopping. It shouldn't be too busy since it's a weekday." "Mulder," Scully said. "I can go anytime, I don't want to bore you." Mulder was too busy hailing a cab since they'd left their cars at work. "No problem Scully," he said. "I don't mind at all. I mean you're gonna have to do it sometime anyway." Scully nodded. "Ok, if you're sure you don't mind." Mulder shook his head and opened the door to the cab that had stopped. He ushered her in first and then slid in himself. He told the driver the name of the mall and they were off. In 15 minutes they pulled up to the mall. Mulder quickly paid the driver and they got out. They headed straight to the huge toy store. Scully went to the game asle to look for the battle game. Mulder wandered away, lost in the rows and rows of every toy imaginable. Scully must've looked for a half hour for the toy. She jumped when she felt something hit her foot. She immediately looked down and saw a remote control car ramming into her foot. Grinning slightly, she bent down. "Mulder," she murmered under her breath. As she was about to grab it, it sped away from her. Hey smile widened a little as the car stopped at the corner, waiting for her to follow. "Mulder," she spoke into the forest of toy aisles, "This is beyond childish you know." In response, the toy car only moved an inch or so, urging her foward. Sighing with the smile still on her lips, she walked after the little car. It led her threw numorous aisles. Scully half laughed the whole way, the other half reminding Mulder how immature this was. "Come on Mulder!," she pleaded. As soon as she said it, the car stopped. Scully bent down to pick it up when something caught her eye. The Ultimate Battle Conquest a cardboard box right in front of her said. He'd found it. She picked it up and smiled at the box, thinking about something entirely different than being glad she had it. She looked up as Mulder reappeared in the aisle, a remote control in hand. "Mulder," she murmered. "How'd you find it?" Mulder grinned. "I told you I was the best battle game player, I'm also the best at finding it. Come on." They made their way to the front of the store. Scully paid for the game quickly and they left the toy store back into the huge mall. They strolled casually, stopping every once in awhile. When they were on the ground level floor and hit dead center of the mall, they both stared in awe at the huge display of the North Pole. Since it was still fairly early on a weekday, there wasn't even a line at Santa. They watched as the last pair of children got their picture taken and scurried off. Mulder turned to Scully, a mischevious grin on his face. "Scully..." he began devilishly. She looked over at him and immediately saw his intention in his eyes. "No way Mulder!" she protested. "I am NOT going to meet Santa Claus. I gave that up when I was 10." "Oh come on Scully," Mulder begged. "It'll be fun! Release your inner child." "Nope, sorry Mulder. YOU go meet Santa." Mulder shook his head and grabbed her hand. "Time to go see if you were naughty or nice Scully." "Mulder! Come on, lemme go!" she protested as he dragged her along. "Sorry Scully," he said. "But you have to." He pulled her up to the front rope and paid for a picture. "Ok, NO pictures!" she yelped. Mulder just took a firmer grip on her arm and pulled her up to the big jolly Santa that sat in a red throne. "Well hello there!" he said cheerily. "Come sit on Santa's lap." Scully reluctantly sat down, but Mulder could see she was liking it a little bit. "Now, what would you like for Christmas?" Santa asked. Scully grinned a little and leaned forward, whispering something in his ear. Santa nodded his head and smiled. She leaned back away and put a finger to her lips, warning him not to tell. He nodded. Mulder started to move back so they could take Scully's picture but her hand reached out and locked around his arm. "Oh no," she told him. "You're gonna be in this picture too Mulder. Don't think you're getting out of it." "But Scully," Mulder said smugly, "I'm Jewish." "Oh shut up Mulder," she said and pulled him back over. He finally gave in and stood behind her. She leaned slightly back into him as an elf snapped their picture. Scully stood up and smiled at Santa. He nodded and winked, casting Mulder a knowing look. Mulder eyed Scully questioningly. She just grinned and turned around to get their picture. They walked away, waiting for the picture to develop. "What did you ask for Scully?" Mulder asked, the curiousity all but killing him. Scully simply shrugged, a grin touching her lips. They went all over DC that day. They had lunch at a small Chinese restraunt then went to the Smithsonian to actually look around for once. After taking the whole tour, they walked up to the most valuable treasure in the entire building, the Hope diamond. Scully put her face right up to glass and looked down at the beautiful stone in awe. Mulder watched Scully more than the diamond, he smiled as the light that bounced off the diamond played off of Scully's beautiful face as it rotated in a slow circle. Scully stood back up and turned to Mulder. "It's beautiful, isn't it?" she asked him softly. He nodded but personally, Mulder thought Scully's crystal blue eyes were more beautiful than any diamond on Earth. They left the Smithsonium and walked around the city a little more, looking in the shops that dotted the street. "I wish it would snow," Scully said. "If it's gonna be this cold, it should at least snow." Mulder laughed. "You know, when I was little, Sam once asked why it snowed, and my mother told us it was a symbol of every couple's love on Earth. She said that every snowflake is unique because every love is unique. There's not another kind like it on Earth, just like every snowflake." Scully smiled. "I'm always gonna remember that," she said. After a few more hours, they ended up at the Reflecting Pool. They sat on their bench and watched the silent water, which was coated with a thin layer of ice. Scully stared silently at the pool, a small grin on her face. Mulder cast a glance and when he was sure she couldn't see him at all, he turned slightly to look at her. He loved how her fiery red hair perfectly framed her beautiful face. How her eyes were the color of hevean, and how her lips were always a soft soft pink. "Hey Mulder," Scully spoke up quietly as the sun began to set, not turning to look at him. "Yea Scully?" he asked. "I had fun today," she said softly. "Probably more fun than I've had in years. And I'm really glad I spent it with you." "Same here Scully," he replied. "Same here." After a moment, he slid his hand slowly under hers. She responded by lacing her fingers through his. And silently they watched the sun set. Later that night, Mulder and Scully ate dinner at an Italian restraunt in Georgetown called Luigi's. As they talked endlessly over lazagna and red wine, a man holding a basket of roses passed their table. "A rose for your lovely girlfriend?," the man asked kindly. Mulder opened his mouth to correct him, then stopped, and pulled out his wallet. He winked at Scully and turned to the man. "Yes, a red one please." The man smiled and handed him a beautiful blood red rose. "The most beautiful rose for the most beautiful woman in here," he said before tipping his hat and walking away. Mulder chuckled when he looked over and saw Scully's blush in the candlelight. When she saw him, she grinning shyly and looked down, a curtain of red hair falling over her face. Mulder laughed again, leaned foward and pushed her hair back. "You know it's true Scully," he whispered with a smile and presented her with the rose. Scully smiled again,.took the flower and breathed in it's sweet scent. "Thanks Mulder," she said softly. He nodded and they returned to their meals. An hour later, they arrived at Scully's door. "Well," Mulder beagn, "This was one hell of a skip day Agent Scully," he said with a grin. Scully smiled and fished for her keys. "I think we both needed today," she replied and pulled them out of her pocket. She unocked her door and opened it a crack She turned back to him. "Thanks again Mulder," she said softly. "Anytime Scully, anytime," he respnded. Their eyes met and a complete silence fell over the hallway. For a few seconds, they simply gazed at one another, a spell binding them. Then Mulder slowly leaned down and kissed her cheek softly. He moved his lips to her ear and barely whispered "Good-night Scully." They shared another lingering look before he turned and headed back toward the elevator. Scully entered her apratment and shrugged off her coat and slid off her heels. She quickly went to her room and changed into a thin, peach, silk nightgown with thin straps. She padded silently over to the window and looked out into the night. She gazed at the stars for a little while before sighing softly. As she was turning away, something caught her eye that made her look quickly back. Right below her window sat Mulder's car still parked, with Mulder in it, gazing right back up at her. She pressed one hand agenst the freezing glass and looked closer. Even from the distance they were, clear blue met intense hazel. With that gaze, everything they felt was told to the other. Scully quickly turned from the window and ran to her front door, flung it open, and took off down the hallway. She flew down the steps and burst out into the cold night, her breath coming out in puffs of smoke. She stopped and looked around. There, behind her, stood Fox Mulder, his car door left wide open. She ran to him, and without a word, she was in his arms. She slid her arms around his neck and lifted herself up on one foot. At the same time, he leaned down to her and their lips met in an explosion of sparks. After a little while, he pulled back just enough to look into her eyes. She smiled up at him. "Scully," he whispered. "I love you." Scully's eyes shimmered with tears as she answered him immediately. "I love you too Mulder. I always have." He smiled and nodded, and their lips met again. And at that same instant, the soft snow began to fall.
