It had been a long time since Dana Scully had enjoyed a quiet evening
of television and sharing this evening with her mother now wasn't so
bad. Although she had no idea what was even on television nowadays
since she was always running around doing something pertaining to
work. Still, the comedy playing out on the 27" screen was better than
sitting up in her old room and moping.

Three days had passed since her suspension from the job along with
Mulder for their...ahem...'behaviour' in their office. Scully blushed
at the memory and shifted uncomfortably on the over-stuffed couch.

She would never forget the look on their colleagues' faces when they
opened the door to the office and saw her with her skirt hiked up
practically to her waist and her bra exposing her ample assets. Not
to mention the sight of Mulder leaning over top of her with his pants
slung low around his hips and a hard as a rock erection. She had been
mortified by it all.

John Doggett and Monica Reyes' bemused faces were nothing compared to
Skinner's stern, tight-lipped glare. Scully wished she could've
disappeared right then and there. All the while Mulder had been
feeling the same thing but was more sheepish about it than ashamed.

It was easier for a man to get over such an indiscretion than a woman
since it was more of joke than an embarrassment. The old 'caught-with-
your-pants-down' story to laugh about in the locker room whereas she
would be painted as the office slut in the ladies' room. That was her
biggest worry at that time. Now she couldn't care less.

She had lost her gold cross necklace somehow during their passion
wrestling but she hadn't noticed it was gone until she was halfway to
her mother's. Where it had gotten to and how Mulder was able to find
it and return it to her was a mystery.

Shortly after she had arrived at her mother's house, Maggie had
handed her a small courier's envelope that had been marked RUSH in
big red letters. After opening it, Scully discovered her necklace had
been returned to her safe and sound and with a new clasp attached. A
small note on a simple slip of paper said it all.

She smiled.

For all his faults and misguided idealisms, Mulder was sweet,
thoughtful and caring when he wanted to be. Or rather when he wasn't
obsessed with an X-File investigation.

The phone in the hallway suddenly rang and with a huff of impatience
at the interruption, Maggie got up from her knitting and went to
answer it.

"Hello?" she said a bit too curtly. "Just a moment please."

Scully held her breath.

"Dana? It's..."

Don't say his name, Mom, please?

"...Fox."

Damn!

"Okay," Scully said and slowly got up from her comfortable corner of
the couch to go answer the call.

As Maggie handed her the receiver, she gave Scully a silent
disapproving look before returning to the living room and her
knitting once more.

"Hello?" Scully said tentively into the receiver.

"Hi." Mulder greeted her. Simple, shy and neutral.

"Hi." she answered back.

"I was just calling to see how you were."

"I'm fine," she replied. She could almost see him rolling his eyes at
her usual response to that all too familiar question.

"Well, I was just kicking around the house and was thinking about you
and wanted to see how you were...so..." his voice trailed off.

"I'm alright," she said, then glanced around the corner at her mother
as she knitted. "Mom and I are sort of in the middle of something so
I have to go now, Mulder."

"Okay, but before you go I just wanted to say that...well, I just
wanted to..." he stammered.

"Mulder, I know." she said gently, rescuing him from his verbal
entanglement.

"I'm sorry." he finally managed to spit out.

She smiled through the receiver to him and said sweetly, "Are you
doing anything this weekend?"

"Nothing except remodeling the country house."

She giggled.

"Why do you ask?"

"Well, I though maybe, just maybe, you'd like to come up here, " she
paused a moment, "for a few days?"

There was a brief silence on the other end before he replied.

"Where?"

"I'll make the arrangements and give you a call back."

"Anything special I need to bring?"

"Just yourself," she said and she knew he was smiling. she could
almost see him with that self-assured grin.

"Scully?"

"Yes?"

"Just so I have sweet dreams of you tonight, can you answer me one
thing?"

"Sure."

"What are you wearing?"

And she laughed out loud.
