The Art of Existence

I think I'm going to like it here.

I admit, the very thought of one day coming into this
world was scary. I heard many strange noises out
there for those nine months. Noises that frightened
me. Noises that made me want to stay in Mama
forever.

For a long time, Mama would cry when it got dark.
When she stopped crying, she would talk to me, and
she said that I got her through each day. She said I
was her miracle.

One day, not too long before I was born, I heard a
different voice other than Mama's, and Granny's, and
all the usual ones I'd grown accustomed to.

It was a voice I had never heard before.

The Voice was soothing and calming, and I could feel
Mama relax whenever she heard it.

After The Voice came, Mama didn't cry herself to
sleep anymore. In fact, she didn't cry at all. Only
happy tears. I know that because she told me so.

The Voice would stay with Mama at night too, and they
would talk and talk. Sometimes they didn't say
anything at all, but I knew The Voice was there.

A short time later, The Voice introduced himself to
me in the early hours of the morning.

"Hey in there," he said.

I wasn't sure what to make of him. So I just
listened.

"I know you can hear me. I have to whisper because
your mom is still sleeping."

Mama only stirred, and I tried to stay as still as
possible so I wouldn't wake her up.

"This is your dad," The Voice said, in a broken
whisper. "I am your dad."

The Voice finally had a name.

He said it again and again, as though he couldn't
quite believe it himself.

He was quiet for a long time, and I was sure he had
gone back to sleep. All of a sudden he placed his
hand above me.

I knew it wasn't Mama's hand because she always put
her fingers above me first, and then she rests her
palm gently above me. Dad put his whole palm above
me right away and just held it there. It was much
bigger than Mama's.

"I love you," was all he said.

Everything was silent again until Mama woke up.
Again, she woke up happy. Again, there were no
tears.

It's been that way ever since. Mama doesn't cry
anymore, because Dad won't let her.

Down the hall, I hear Mama and Dad laughing. Their
voices get louder and I see them both enter my room.
I grin and wave my hands in the air. That's how I
tell them I'm happy to see them.

Dad picks me up and tosses me above his head. I love
it when he does that. He tells Mama that it's going
to help me one day become the greatest Knick's player
ever. I'm not sure what that means, but I have a
feeling I'll soon find out.

Yep, I definitely think I'm going to like it here.

Although it's much more frightening than the one I
spent nine months in, I don't think I'm ever going to
leave this place.

Mama has always told me she won't have it any other
way.

Dad says he'll make sure of it. No matter what.

I believe them both.
