THE BABYLON FILE - (con't) Scully woke up alone in the dark. No Mulder. Then she remembered were she was. "Lights" she announced and to her surprise it worked. "What time is it?" "06:00 Babylon 5 Standard Hours." came the automated reply She got off the bed and looked around for any sign of Ivanova. There was a note on the night stand. "If you need anything. touch the blue button on the comm panel and let Lt. Corwin know. Susan." Scully didn't know who Lt. Corwin was but she was sure he had better things to do than get her breakfast. She heard several beeps. She looked around and heard it again. A voice came through the door "Dr. Scully?" she realized. "Come in" she replied." "It's locked." She looked at the panel by the door and hit the biggest button. The door slid open A young officer carrying a breakfast tray stood there smiling. "Lt. Corwin, I presume?" "Commander Ivanova asked me to check on you." the young officer replied. "She's been busy all night with Station business." "Thank you. I really appreciated it." Scully said sincerely, still a little disorientated. " Uh... before you go could you show me how this door works." After eating Scully found the shower and a change of clothes Ivanova had left for her. The clothes fit well and were very similar to the suits she wore back on Earth. What a strange concept. Here she was light years from home and 300 years in the future. And heading out to see Mulder as he lay sick in bed. At least that part was familiar. Mulder looked even worst than the day before. And so did Marcus. Scully felt terrible watching them suffer as she waited for the results of Marcus's blood titer. She reviewed Franklin's notes from the day before. As she wander around the lab, she notice a series of images on a monitor. They looked like autopsy photos. She stopped a passing tech and asked what was. The tech confirmed they where autopsy images from a murder victim brought in last night. Scully immediately asked for Franklin but was told he was conference with Sheridan. The tech assured Scully that Franklin would check in was soon as he was done She studied the images. There was something haunting familiar about them. Then she received the results of Marcus's lab. 70 % conversion. Better than they could have imaged. She ordered the blood link terminated and Mulder's treatment regimen to begin as soon as possible. ___________________________________ Sheridan, Ivanova, Franklin and Zach sat looking at the images of the second victim. The Captain stared at the security report. "How is it that there is no evidence that can give us even a clue as to how this happen?" Zach shook his head "Sir, what we're finding doesn't add up. It appears to be some kind of shape shifter that can squeeze through the smallest openings but it also has human characteristic. Franklin reports that the trace DNA around the wound in both cases is definitely human." "Humans can't ooze through the space between the lift car and shaft wall. There can't be more than 5 inches clearance." Ivanova countered. Zach shrugged. "And we still can't find a motive or connection between the murders." Sheridan eyed his people carefully then said "I have a radical suggestion." Ivanova sighed "We're not shy. What do you have in mind?" The Captain's voice continued it's sure steady tone. "I was reading Agent Mulder's book last night. Apparently he and Agent Scully investigated strange cases like this all the time. They called them X-files. I recommend we bring them in as consultants on this investigation." Franklin interrupted "Mulder is still under treatment. He can't possibility be up and around in less than two days." Ivanova added "Sir, isn't this getting a little extreme? After all they're 300 years behind us in technology..." "And that didn't seem to make any difference when it came to treating Marcus." Sheridan observed. "Look we're stretched thin enough with our Resistance movement - we can't spare the personnel for a manhunt. But if these murders go on unchecked, people will begin to panic and we can lose support from our own base of operation." "Hey, I'm game. I'm a security officer, not Sherlock Holmes." Zach offered. "Dr. Scully will be in Med Lab all day. Let's see what see what she has to say." Franklin concluded. Sheridan nodded. "Good! We'll meet there after Ivanova finishes her broadcast." Ivanova sighed heavily, wondering how much more trouble her impulsive decision to save Marcus would cause. ______________________________ Marcus reacted poorly to the termination of the link. The viral titer continued to rise but his neurologic condition deteriorated. Convulsions started shortly after he was disconnected from Mulder. The tech informed Scully that it was secondary to the toxic affects of the anti-viral medication he had received. He was medicated and worst of the convulsion subsided. Scully feared she disconnected them too soon although the tech assure her that the blood link had nothing to do with Marcus's neuro status. Was she so determined to get Mulder started on treatment that she'd overlook Marcus's welfare? She touched the face of `her Ranger' and knew she'd never desert him. His tremors calmed as she gently ran her fingers through his thick hair. she realized. Mulder had somehow `connected' with Marcus to ease his pain and stabilize his weaken nervous system. Maybe it had something to do with his telepathic abilities. Maybe it was just Mulder. Her thoughts were interrupted by the entry of the Command Staff. "How is he doing, Dr. Scully?" Franklin asked. She smile weakly "The conversion is going better than expected. We terminated the link and we may be able to start treatment tonight. His neurologic condition is unstable but he's responsive to external stimuli. If someone can remain in physical contact with him to keep him focused, I think he'll stay with us." "And Mulder?" Ivanova asked, rationalizing she only cared because she needed him for the investigation. "He'll be alert within 24 hours if the treatment goes well. But it may take a few days to get his strength back." Scully replied clinically. Without thinking, Ivanova responded "That's OK. I want his brain, not his body." "Excuse me?" Scully replied, wondering just what she meant by that. Sheridan stepped forward "Agent Scully, we want to enlist your help in a criminal investigation on board the station." She realized that was the first time since arriving there that she was addressed as Agent instead of Doctor. She knew immediately what they were talking about "I saw the autopsy images. Believe it or not I think I know who, or rather what did it." She started to exit with the Captain then stopped when she heard Marcus gasp. "I think someone needs to stay with him." "Ivanova ! It's your fault he's going to live. See that he does it as quietly as possible." Sheridan ordered, a sly smile on his face. Grumbling under her breath, Ivanova went to Marcus and held his hand. He started to grip tightly, shifting the comm link on the back of her hand. She said to the unconscious man "Get your own link. I'm in enough trouble." For the first time in days, a small smile spread across his lips. Without a second though, Ivanova ran her fingers along the smile she was afraid she'd never see again. ________________________________________ Scully and the others sat in Franklin's office. Zach went over the details of the two murders and Franklin showed his autopsy finding. Scully recognized everything. Every clue was an echo of that horrible case when she first realized what it meant to be part of the X Files. There were no innocent by stander in the world of the paranoid and the paranormal. "His name was Eugene Victor Tooms. Mulder and I encountered him twice. Mulder theorized he was a mutant human life form that was capable of actually stretching his skeleton and soft tissue giving him access to his victims. He remained in hibernation for 30 years emerging to feed on human livers. Five victims were taken each time he emerged, each with their liver ripped out from their body. Each crime scene was unique in the aspect that the victim was alone and there was no obvious point of entry." "Perfect match." Zach commented. Captain wasn't as quick to agree. "Are you saying there's a 400 hundred year old mutant stalking people on my station.?" Scully shook her head. "We killed Tooms back in 1993. But he may not have been the only one. Or maybe he was cloned. I don't know. Mulder's the one who specializes in mutant theories. All I know is that the man we hunted did not appear to age in a 30 year period. It would be only 10 cycles from our time to your time." Sheridan was still doubtful "But why is there no records of similar crime sprees in the last 300 year?" "He's been migrating." a weak voice offered from the doorway. "Mulder !" Scully cried in voice tones with surprise and concern. "What are you doing up?" "They revived me from cryo, when the virus went into stasis. Then I asked where you were. I figured you'd want my help." he replied holding himself up at the door.. "Agent Mulder, you really should be in bed." Franklin scolded as he helped Mulder take a seat next to Scully. "Don't worry. The tech already gave me the anti-viral and steroid injection. Then I heard an X-File call my name." Mulder smiled, as her dropped next to Scully, his body still shivering from the cold therapy. Zach explained the details of the current case to Mulder as he listened intently, the brightness in his eyes in contrasted to his weaken body. He found himself propped against Scully to stay upright, a chore she accepted as second nature. Finally he spoke. "You want to know what I think?" Scully spoke in "that" skeptical tone as she stared with "that look" she'd worn so often in the past. "You think Tooms and his `friend' on board Babylon 5 were genetic mutants created by an alien race that was trying to find a way to bring a live human specimen to their home world without it dying of old age in transit while traveling at sub-light speeds." "And they call me `Spooky'." Mulder smiled response to her perfect summary of `what he thought'. Sheridan and the other looked just as unconvinced as Scully. Franklin wrinkled his forehead and said "There are some awfully large leaps of logic in that theory Agent Mulder." "Scully may not have told everything about Tooms. His biology was essentially unchanged. Except for abnormalities in his muscle and skeletal structure and an unusual metabolic cycle, even the chromosomal profile was not considered remarkable. How could such a radical mutation not show any signs of genetic change unless it was deliberate? The changes to the body structure could be designed to provided some kind of benefit for surviving the range from zero gravity to multiple G forces. I suspect the predatory hunting of human livers was an unexpected result of the long hibernation perhaps reflecting a psychological and biological need not anticipated by the creator. Remember, hibernation is not the same as stasis. 30 years is a long time for the liver to detoxify the blood. Something else Scully may not have mention was Tooms's habit of collecting trophies from the victims, some trinket. I think that served to fulfill his need to feel human, a part of society, since we are essential social animals." Zach offered "Well, there was a comb taken from the first crime scene and a spanner taken from the second." "All right" conceded Sheridan "Some of that makes sense. But why do you suspect alien involvement?" "Because Tooms started his killing spree in the 1900's, long before anyone on Earth had started genetic experimentation. That's why I think he's migrating. Following some instinct to take him to the home of the race that created him. Tooms hibernated in the same spot for 90 years while he was stuck on Earth. So why else would his `buddy' seek travel opportunities." Scully added her practical take of the situation. "Logically, since this station isn't 30 years old, he either was hibernating in something that came aboard or he walked in here himself. He can live and superficially function in society. Tooms was very adaptable and intelligent." "Sort of a vampire with a day job." Zach muttered. Everyone glared accusingly at him except Mulder. "Exactly" announced the Agent. "That's how he targeted his victims. For some reason, he chose specific people then stalked them and took them when they were alone. He wasn't an opportunistic scavenger but a cold blooded predator." Completing the profile Scully added "Tooms left the victims at the scene of the crime, as did our killer. If no similar deaths have been reported, it would be logical to conclude you've got 3 more murders waiting to happen. He may be here looking for a ride to his next destination in which case he may wait to take his last victim. He made a nest of sorts for his hibernation out of strips of paper, cloth and his saliva which contained a bile like substance." "This just keeps getting better and better." Franklin whispered to Zach, who nodded in disgusted response. Sheridan seem to accept the profile "So you don't think he'd hibernate on the station. That he's waiting to find a good resting place were he's not likely to be disturbed. With Clark in power, any human outpost aren't likely to be stable for the next 30 years." He thought for a moment then his face jumped in alarm. "Minbar! He was headed for Minbar. There are temples and gardens there that remained undisturbed for hundreds of years. And their anatomy is similar enough to provide him with a meal. His crimes would be unthinkable there, they wouldn't know how to respond. He didn't realize until he arrived here that they were in a civil war." Mulder smiled "Now whose acting `spooky'." Now Zach was doubtful. "It's not like humans go sight seeing on Minbar on a regular basis. How was he planning on getting here?" "Supply ships, crew shuttles, there's was plenty of traffic between here and Minbar and given his unique talents he could have slipped by security." Sheridan deduced. Zach remain unconvinced. "But if he wasn't on the station during the Shadow War, how would he know about our business with Minbar?" Now Franklin sat up in surprise. "He'd know if he was on Mars ! When Marcus and I were there, we told some people about how the Minbari helped us during the Shadow War. It makes sense if he was hibernating on Mars. Thirty years ago you could have murdered a hundred people there and no one would have noticed." Zach just shook his head "You guys are scaring me." "Good, you should be scared." Mulder added. "Check the arrivals since Marcus and Franklin came back from Mars. See if anyone is unaccounted for. Meanwhile see if you can figure out where he might be going. Get Agent Mulder access to registered flight plans and destination descriptions. He seems to have a talent for good guesses." He turned to Mulder "That is if you're up to trying to think like a mutant." "No problem. It's not much of a stretch." the smiling Agent replied with the pun intended. No one laughed although Scully hid her smile. "Agent Scully, we'll need your help in searching the ship and analyzing the bio data but in the meantime can you oversee the recovery of Agent Mulder and Marcus? " "Of course, Captain. To tell you the truth, I have no desire to be stalked by a liver eating mutant again." she shivered at the thought. "Again? I'm sorry I had no idea..." the Captain apologized. "That's how we caught him the first time. It's an occupational hazard." she remarked with a calm that hid her fear of another encounter. Franklin winced at the thought "I think I'll stick to Med Lab." ______________________________________ After spending the night reviewing reports and going over the crime scenes, Ivanova was quite tired. Ordered to stay with Marcus, there was little she could do but sit there and hold his hand. Just sitting and being so tired she fell asleep leaning against Marcus bed. Scully and Franklin returned with Mulder, forcing him to rest while a work station was set up for his use in the investigation. Franklin stifled a laugh. The sight of Ivanova asleep on duty was rare enough but of her reclined against Marcus as almost unbearable. Scully and Mulder saw something different. Knowing how much Marcus cared for Ivanova, they couldn't help but notice that he breathed in synch with her, evidence of the connection between them. Feeling the stares upon her, Ivanova woke with as start, pulling Marcus's arm up with her. He opened his eyes and looked at Ivanova and moved his lips to speak but lost his strength before the words could form. Ivanova felt his grip slowly relax and release her. "So fill me in. What's happen?" she said ignoring the expectant looks on their faces. Mulder dropped on his bed "Scully and I have an idea of what's going on with these murders. What we're dealing with is intelligent and dangerous but not quite human. Mr. Allen will brief you, I'm too tried to explain." Scully was more helpful. "It may be a genetically altered human, which kills out of a biological need. It's a hunter and we're the prey." "Not on my watch." Ivanova straightened her uniform and headed toward the door. She stopped and turn to Scully with very un-Commander expression of concern. "You'll stay with Marcus, won't you?" "As long as he needs me." the agent reassured her. For some strange reason, Ivanova felt uneasy about Scully staying at Marcus's side. She dismissed the thought but it refused to leave her until Mulder interrupted her train of thought. He spoke to the unconscious man across the room. "Marcus, you'd get better get well soon. I hate it when anyone needs Dana more than I do." _________________________________ Ivonava issued a station wide security alert, but did her best to contain the impending panic. The ambassadors were the first to complain. Londo Molari of Centauri was on her heels immediately. "A security alert for an unknown assailant that attacks from within a locked room? What you hiding, Commander?" Londo accused her. "We're not hiding anything." she replied tersely. "This assailant can gain access through small vents and passage ways. But he only attacks a lone victim." "So you expect me to take my showers with Vir?!" Londo scolded. The mental picture was too much for her and she fought off an embarrassing laugh. "What ever it takes to make you feel safe." Londo ranted on so she was about to directed him to the Captain when she had an evil thought. "Let me introduce to someone who can explain the whole thing to you." She escorted Londo to Med Lab and told Mulder to explain the nature of these usual crime in private. Mulder's first words was not the typical greeting Londo had been accustomed to. Mulder looked serious at the Centauri and asked "Do you have a liver?" Taken aback, Londo took it as some kind of challenge. "Yes, we have an organ similar to the human liver, only it is much more robust and can handle many more poisons than you can imagine." he boasted. Mulder shifted his voice to one of urgency "If what you're saying is true, then you are in great danger. That's what he stalks. What he needs to survive. And he has no qualms about ripping it out from your body with his bare hands." Molari eyed Mulder suspiciously "Are you certain?" "If he develops a taste for your liver, he might take up residence on YOUR home world." Mulder replied at his `spooky' best.. "Ridiculous! This is another `human' problem!" Molari said as he stormed out of Med Lab. But as soon as he returned to his quarters, he ordered a thorough search of all ships arriving on Centauri Prime from their sector and made Vir cover any crack or vent larger than his fist throughout his quarters. Mulder added Centauri Prime to the list of possible hiding places for the mutant. It struck Mulder as funny that he hadn't regarded Londo as an alien. He was just another person- proud and determined, but prejudice and prideful - as `human' as the next person, even if he refused to acknowledge it. ____________________________________ By the next day, Mulder was strong enough to leave Med Lab but Scully remained there most of the time tending to Marcus's treatment. As ordered , Ivonava showed Mulder around the station, not just as a courtesy but to help catch a killer. Ivanova walked the weaken but enthusiastic Mulder through the Zolaco. He stared at amazement at everything around him. She held his arm tightly, expecting him to run off at any moment like a small overexcited child.. Seeing the Commander taking a casual stroll , arm in arm with handsome stranger, raised more than a few eyebrow in the crowded marketplace. She felt uncomfortable as a baby-sitter, worst as an escort. Especially for Mulder. Thanks to some advise from Lyta, Ivanova kept her mind occupied to prevent accidentally scanning one another again. He didn't appear to have any recollection of the telepathic image he had sent of making love to her. Maybe it never happen. Being the practical type, she decide to not concern herself with something that might not have happened. "Susan, how many different races are on the station." He paused then asked "Is it OK if I call you Susan?" Feeling that everyone was taking liberties with her since she launched this whole stupid time travel scheme, Mulder being no exception she replied "Sure why not. Isn't my name, isn't it?" "Well I'm just a little uncomfortable with Russia names." he replied, recalling unpleasant memories of Tunguska. Ivanova thought. "Fine, whatever. There's usually around 15 different races on the station." "Are they all humanoid?" "Yeah, most are." "Carbon-based?" "Mostly" "Oxygen breathing?" Ivanova stopped and looked him squarely in the eye. "Look, Mulder I know this is all new to you but asking me these question is about as exciting to me as finding out where you brought your underwear." "Sorry" he replied meekly. He wanted to say `K-Mart' but she wouldn't have gotten the joke. "You had mention several alien races visiting Earth in the 20th Century?" "Drop it, Mulder. The Captain's mad enough at me." she grumbled. "I was thinking - it might be linked to this case, and maybe we can figure out which one infected Marcus..." Ivanova's face suddenly perked up and she dragged Mulder towards the comm. center "Let me get you to a computer terminal." _____________________________________ They found four likely candidates that matched what Mulder knew about the race which may have visited earth in his time. Each had ships that flew like the one's Mulder had seen, had similar physical feature to the alien described by abductees and were known to have shape shifters. All four races had been wiped out in separate wars over a hundred years ago. End of Trail. Ivanova looked at the depressed Mulder. "Hey, look at it this way. We're still here. Whoever they were and why they did what they did doesn't matter. We won. Human anatomy has been basic unchanged in 300 years. So much so hybrids. And the telepaths are already on their way. This `thing' on the station is all that's left of them." She gave him an encouraging pat on the back, trying to get both their minds off their disappointment. Mulder finally smiled and considered what to do next. "Can we get something to eat?" "Now you're talking. You look like a Dug Out man." She grabbed his arm and helped him stand up and move away from the terminal. "The Dug Out? Sounds like a Sports Bar." he commented. "It is. Of course since their jamming us we only get reruns of old games but game 3 of `58 World Series is great." she remarked casually. A pleasantly surprised Mulder asked "No way! I can watch baseball in the 23rd century. Scully prefers me to spend my time in more intellectual pursues." "Fine. We'll just tell her your evaluating the affects of stasis on your memory by calculating the statistics in your head." Ivanova replied. Mulder's smile broadened at the clever commander. "You know, Susan, I think this the start of a beautiful friendship." Still cautious of his intentions she commented "Watch it, Mulder. Keep saying stuff like that and there will be a not-so-beautiful end to this friendship.", displaying her hand in a fist ready to strike. He rubbed his jaw remembering her punch and reminded himself not to tease her the way he did Scully, unless he wanted another right cross. _______________________________________ Marcus's recovery was going well. He finally regained a recognizable state of consciousness. The first thing he saw was Scully so he assumed he was still hallucinating until she reached over and hugged him and kissed his cheek. Too shocked to speak, he heard her said "Dr. Franklin, I think he awake." His brain spun in circles - Dana and Stephen in the same place - does not compute. He heard her speak again. "Marcus, you're going to be fine. Thank God, you're all right. Marcus?" His silence scared her. He opened his mouth and it felt like it had closed shop of several days. Still he managed a short sentence. "Dana, what are you doing here?" "I'm returning the favor. This time I came to save your life." she whispered softly. Marcus buried his face into her hair, remembering faint images of a forbidden joy. _____________________________________ Ivanova and Mulder were enjoying burgers that were made from `something that won't kill you" according to Ivanova. Mulder took her word on it as devoured it with pleasure. As they watched the prerecorded game of the screen Ivanova pointed out the various players and their significant accomplishment. Mulder was impressed that she knew that much about baseball. "Susan, I would have never figured you for the sports fan type." he commented. She causally shrugged "Memorizing the stats is no big deal. I have a photographic memory..." "WHAT?" Mulder interrupted. She huffed in frustration over his constant outbursts. "Now what? Is there something wrong..." Mulder shook his head in apology. "No, no. There's nothing wrong. It's just that I have an edict memory as well." He obviously thought this similarity was significant, especial in light of their shared telepathic ability. "Great." she mumbled under her breath, unimpressed by the coincidence and unwilling to have anything more in common with this man from the past. Mulder realized it was time to change the subject. "Uh, so tell me. Do other species play baseball?" Showing interest in his question, Ivanova responded "Rarely. I think it goes against some deep seated genetic need to avoid playing right field." "Hey, I played right field!" Mulder responded indignantly. "I rest my case." she said with a smile. Ivanova pointed out the various races they saw around the bar - Drazi, Centauri, Antareans, and Narns. "No Minbari?" Mulder asked innocently. "Minbari don't drink. They don't play poker very well either." She thought for a moment and added. "I'm not sure if they play baseball." "What about basketball? I think I'll be up to a little one-on-one in a few days." She shot him a disapproving glare. "Mulder, you came 300 years into the future to play one on one with an alien?" He shrugged and said "Why do you think they call me `Spooky'?" She shook her head and took a drink of her ice tea. "That's not spooky; it's just plain weird." "That's my other nick name." His voice dropped a bit lower and he added " But I didn't get it playing basketball." Ivanova had the distinct feeling he was flirting with her. Even stranger, she didn't seem to mind. But now seem like a good time to change the subject. "You want to see the new quarter I arranged for you and Scully?" His normal tone return as he stood up "Yeah, good idea." She started to help him up. "No, it's OK, I got it." Then he nearly fell over, still a bit unsteady on his feet. Ivanova grabbed his arm roughly and pulled him up. "OK I don't got it." he replied meekly. "Mulder, did time travel do this or have you always been an idiot?" Ivanova scolded. "Ask Scully. I watch out for the spooky and weird stuff, she takes care of the stupid and stubborn." "She must be very busy." Leading to the resident sections, she added " Speaking of Scully, I hope you don't mind -there's only one bed in your quarters. We're short on space and supplies and I figured since you two were living together..." "We're not having sex but we do usually sleep together." he clarified. "OK then... this arrangement should work for you. We don't any station policy that requires you to have sex." That telepathic image flashed again in her head again. she thought. "Actually it was Marcus that gave me the idea..." "Marcus!" she said with surprise. "Yeah about not having sex until we ready to make that commitment." Mulder noticed the distracted look on the Commander's face. "Hey, Susan, what's wrong?" Things just went from bad to worst. She could handle Mulder having fantasies about her but Marcus.....? Seeing she was deep in thought Mulder tried again to get in on the conversation. "Hello, Susan. Are we still talking here?" "No." she replied bluntly and continued to lead him to quarters. Mulder shut up, and let her drag him along. ____________________________________ The quarters were no larger than the cheap motel rooms they were used to staying in and much cleaner. The one bed was adequate for two people. He sat on the bed, tired by the brisk pace she set. "So tell me, Susan, was that a part of the rehab program Scully set up for me?" he puffed. She shook her head in disgust at his breathless state. "And you wanted to go one-on-one." "How about you?" he asked innocently. "Wanna go one-on-one with me?" Mulder suddenly realized the innuendo broadcasted by his question and fully expected her to hit him again. Her answer decked him just as effectively. "Sure, Mulder. Whenever you think you're up to it." she replied sincerely. she thought to herself. Suddenly, she felt uncertain of what she just agreed to do with Mulder. Suddenly her link chirped. "Susan, Stephen . Marcus is awake and wants to see you and Mulder." ____________________________________ "Hello, my friend." Marcus greeted Mulder. "It appears our farewells were a bit premature." "According to Dr. Franklin, our arrival here was none to soon for your sake." Mulder replied with a smile as he entered the room, still supporting himself against Ivanova. Marcus started to sit up but Mulder gestured for him to stay laying down. "Don't bother getting up. I know how you feel, BELIEVE ME." Marcus slumped back in the bed then grinned at Ivanova. "And I hear I have you to thanks for my miracle cure." "Thank Scully." she answered gruffly as she deposited Mulder into a chair beside the bed. "I'm just the messenger." She avoided looking directly at Marcus, afraid that he might see the overwhelming joy she felt at his recovery. Instead she focused on Scully who hovered over Marcus. The Ranger gazed at Scully and she responded to an unspoken request by helping him sit up so he could face Ivanova. He reached out to touch her shoulder and gently whispered "You risked everything to bring them here. You are my miracle." Ivanova took his hand in her firm grip, in a gesture meant to be one of camaraderie, not affection. "Don't be so melodramatic. I just can't afford to lose a good tactical officer and translator." Her face relaxed a bit as she ventured a direct glimpse. "We owed it to you, Marcus. We all did." Marcus searched her eyes for a deeper meaning but saw only the stalwart Commander. He sighed in disappointment and Scully shifted his weight into her arms to let him know she understood, then lowered him back down on the bed. He quickly changed the subject. "So what have I missed. Have we heard anything from Minbar?" Ivanova shook her head and she resumed her professional air. "We don't expect to hear anything until it's all over. Our advance on Proxima 3 and Mars isn't depending on Minbari support but we sure as hell don't want them deserting us now." Marcus frowned, concerned that the days to come would bring more battles and death. It never ended, it seemed and there was never a chance to show Ivanova what she meant to him. All he could demonstrate was his loyalty and devotion. And maybe his good humor. He tried to smile and replied "Just the sound of Delenn's voice stops Earth Force Fleets in their tracks. Perhaps you can take lessons from her." Mulder chimed in "I don't know Delenn, but Susan already scares the hell out of me." Scully gave her lover a hug. "Don't worry. I'm here to protect you." she joked. Ivanova just stood there, with her arms crossed over her chest looking very stern. Scully knew it was time to change the subject again. "Commander, I've studied the forensic data from the murder victims and I think found something that was over looked in the initial reports. Machine oil was embedded in the wound site. The first report dismissed it, thinking it came from the surrounding equipment but it's concentration deep in the wound cavity indicate that the oil was embedded in the attacker's hand, not just a surface coating." Mulder perked up, hearing the evidence unfold. "Which means he's most likely working as some kind of maintenance worker. That might also give him access to the internal framework of the station." Ivanova shook her head. "Ever since a bomb scare a while back, we carefully screen all our workers but ships coming in for repairs sometimes hire cheap labor from Down Below. We'll check it out tomorrow." Mulder pulled himself to standing position. "Why not tonight?" Ivanova gave him the once over and replied "YOU need to get your strength back if you want to go bug hunting. Beside, nighttime is not a good time to prowl around down there." Scully offered to go instead of Mulder but Marcus interrupted her. "Dana, even I don't go down there alone unless it's absolutely necessary." Scully and Ivanova shot him a doubting stare. He shrugged and explained "Just because I'm a Ranger, it doesn't mean I ALWAYS walk in the dark places others fear." Ivanova finally smiled, and said. "Scully and I will go get her things from my quarters. Mulder, wait here for us and you can show her to you new room. Marcus, I'll check up on you later." Both men nodded and watched the woman leave the room. Marcus sighed and said to Mulder "Amazing, isn't she?" Mulder nodded in agreement. "Absolutely. Brave, smart..." Marcus continued "...efficient and also very beautiful." He sighed again and said "You're a very lucky man, my friend." Mulder paused, trying to comprehend his meaning. Then it dawned on him "You were talking about Scully. I...I was referring to Susan." Marcus gave him a broad grin. "Now you know why I reacted to Dana the way I did." Mulder nodded but added "Yeah, but Susan is really not like Scully. Don't get me wrong. I love Scully with all my heart, but she's not always the best person just to hang out with." Marcus gave a questioning glance "Hang out?" Mulder clarified his slang. "You know, drink a few beers, play a little b-ball." He sighed then added "I guess were not the kind of guys who `hang out' much." "That's all right, my friend. I don't suppose we're the kind of guys who fall in love with their co-workers either but look how we ended up." Marcus mused. Mulder laughed then they both felt silent, each thinking about the woman who WASN'T his co-worker., until time lines crossed. ____________________________________ Ivanova gave Scully a few items she would need for station living . She warned her about the Vibe-Showers and the recycled air that made your mouth feel dry all the time. Finally she asked her about Mulder. "How long have you and Mulder been working together?" "About six years. At times, it feel like a lifetime. I can barely remember what it was like before I knew him." Scully replied wistfully then asked "How long have you known Marcus?" "I don't know. Maybe a year. It's been like living in hell's fire ever since the Shadow War. Every day another disaster, another disappointment. Here and there, a reason to celebrate." Ivanova shrugged as if that was normal to her. "Not that I'm complaining but just once I'd like to live a day without worrying about the future. To step on the Earth and not have to run for cover. To make a new friend and not have to wonder if he's a spy." Then she saw Scully's thoughtful nod. "I guess your life isn't much different." Scully half smiled and said "I don't regret a day. My choices were always my own. My sister said once... `it's the people you meet that make all worth while.' I've meet some remarkable people." Ivanova agreed quietly and as she packed the last few items she remarked "He seems to be recovering quickly." Scully nodded. "The treatment went well. He's naturally a fighter, strong willed." Under her breath, Ivanova commented "Even weak and sick, he's a damn good looking man." She noticed Scully overheard her and apologized quickly. "I'm sorry. That was out of line. This whole business has me distracted and you caught me off guard..." "Don't apologize." Scully insisted "Marcus IS a very handsome man." Ivanova face blushed but she revealed her faux pas anyway "Uh....I was talking about Mulder. And Marcus......Well, he's Marcus." Ivanova wasn't sure if Scully would understand but she pursed her lips and thought for a moment then nodded in agreement, as the women returned to Med Lab. __________________________________ Marcus was sleeping quietly as Mulder and Scully left for their quarters. It was harder for Scully to support Mulder as Ivanova had but she didn't seem to mind the burden. Mulder turned to Ivanova and said "We still have a date to go hunting mutants Down Below tomorrow morning, don't we?" Ivanova regarded the agent's determined stare and answered "Only if you're strong enough to get to C and C on your own by 08:00." He agreed to meet her there and left with Scully. As she watched him stagger away leaning on his partner, Ivanova said to herself "He'll never make it." "Don't under-estimate my friend." Marcus commented sleepily. "Apart from you, he's the most single minded person I've ever meet." "Marcus mind your own business and go back to sleep." she scolded as she pressed his eyes shut with her hand. "I need you at full health if you're going to be on the bridge of the White Star with me." He smiled at her touch, warm and strong, as it lingered a moment longer than necessary. She had said she needed him, at her side. Even if she only meant she needed his skills in combat, it was him she wanted none the less. It was a start. "I'll be there, Susan. I owe you my life. The least I can do is give you my undying devotion and total loyal." "Marcus, you're a Ranger. You've already pledge your life to `The One'." she replied with a smile, as she started to leave. Marcus keep his eyes closed, not wanting to know if she could still hear him, and whispered "Then I'll pledge my heart to you." Ivanova paused as she heard his quiet words, but gave him no indication that she was still there. She looked at him again and saw a single tear slide down his cheek. She silently left the room and thought ____________________________ AT 08:00 hours, Ivanova stepped into C and C to find Captain Sheridan and Mulder discussing Down Below. "When I was a kid, I would have loved to do the kind of stuff you do - poking around all those creepy places." the Captain exclaimed, just as if he were a kid again. "Haunted houses, mysterious forests...I couldn't get enough of them. Just me and a bright flashlight." "Don't forget the extra batteries." Mulder mused. "And some of the things you've seen." Sheridan continued "Astral projections, avenging spirits, past lives. Amazing!" Mulder looked modestly at the floor then gazed around the Command Center "Well, I could say the same about your job. I always wanted to explore space. Then there's the obsession with other life forms. Even as a young boy I was fascinated by the possibility of alien life." "It's a good thing I didn't read your book before I joined Earth Force or they might be calling me `Spooky' Sheridan." the Captain joked. Mulder smiled as he looked over at Ivanova. "It's still just a job. It's the search for the truth that makes it meaningful, in both our lines of work. And you get to cross paths with some very interesting people." Ivanova interrupted the pair and said "Speaking of a job to do...let's get you teamed up with security to check out Down Below." Mulder seem disappointed. "What about you? I thought you and I would scout it out first." Sheridan added "If this guy is as clever as you say, a large team might make him suspicious. You two were together most of yesterday so I doubt you'll attract any more attention today. Besides there's nothing going on in C and C until the shooting starts. I'll notify you if we get any word from Mars or the other colonies." Ivonava opened her mouth to protest but Sheridan stopped her short. "Look, we need to clean house before we leave or some nasty rumors will start to spread. I trust Zach but frankly, this is out of his league. I'm counting in you, Susan." Ivanova stared at Sheridan for a second gauging his resolve and quickly concluded she had no choice. "Come on, Mulder. We've got a lot of ground to cover if we're going to catch this guy before he kills again." ____________________ Mulder was able to walk without support but still needed Ivanova 's help moving up and down the few stairwells. She was amazed he recovered as fast as he did. He described the `nest' Tooms made in his home, in the half-way house and even in his cell when he was in prison. "Scully and I reviewed the manifests last night. Everyone who arrived from Mars is accounted for, so our man must have stowed away to get here which means he's probably living Down Below, especially since he doesn't seem to needed 5 star accommodations." Mulder offered. "Where's Scully now anyway? I thought you two were partners." she said with a irritated edge to her voice. "Is she back in Med Lab with Marcus?" Mulder thought he heard a touch of jealous in her voice but stayed focus on the case. "No, today she's my other half. While I look for the suspects home, she's checking out his work place. Scully went to check on ships under repair which aren't using offical station resources." Mulder explained that he suspected this killer may be a relative or clone of Tooms. If they were lucky, his facial features might be similar and if nothing else his solitary behavior could tip them off. They continued to search off the main corridors, looking for clues of his `nest'. Suddenly they were confronted by three large rough looking men. "You got some nerve coming down here with your new boy friend, Ivanova." the largest one growled. "Get out of the way, Conners." she barked back. "I don't have time to play cops and robbers." The men didn't budge. "You know the rules. You gotta pay to walk my sector. Don't try to show off for lover boy or you're going to be taking him home in pieces." Mulder bristled at these thugs but Ivanova stayed calm as she walked up to the man. "First of all. he's not my boy friend. Secondly...." She exploded in a fury, grabbing his collar and throwing him back into one of the other men while delivering a quick kick to the third man who tried to jump her. Mulder just stood there stunned by her sudden action. "....and secondly, this is MY station. Top to bottom. Stem to stern. If you want to play your power games with your other subterranean friends, that's your business but don't get in my way." He slowly stood up and gave her the evil eye. "You arrogant bitch! You think that uniform's gonna protect you down here?" Suddenly three more men appeared behind him. "Oh shit!" Mulder whispered. "Susan, I hope you have a plan because I'm really not that great of fighter even when I'm healthy." She pressed her PPG pistol into his hand and answered "Just keep them off my back ." She turned so she could keep them all in her field of vision as they circled around the pair. Suddenly a familiar voice echoed from the shadows. "Today is not the day to confront the Commander and her friend." Conners laughed at the voice. "Sorry, mister, these two are learning a lesson in the chain of command." Marcus, carrying his pike, stepped from the darkness. "He (gesturing towards Mulder) is not the friend you'll have to contend with." Seeing the Ranger, the others broke the circle and scattered. "You don't scare me, Ranger." the remaining gang leader snarled. Marcus raised his pike and replied in a voice as cold as ice "Unlike your tactics, I don't require your fear. I only require your pain." Marcus paused before moving to strike, giving the man a chance to run off with the others. Marcus smiled at Mulder and Ivanova as he ushered them towards the cleared corridor. Ivanova brushed past him without making eye contact, as she said sternly "You should be in Med Lab." Marcus continued to smile and replied sarcastically to her absent thanks "You're welcome, Susan. Glad to help out, anytime." Mulder paused and nodded at Marcus. "Hey, I appreciate not getting beat up for a change." "Marcus, go back to Med Lab." Ivanova ordered. "Stephen released me this morning. It may have something to do with my singing." He paused waiting for Ivanova to make a retort but she continued down the hall. "I'm feeling much better, not quite up to par but enough to handle in stroll Down Below." he called to her. "Stop following us!" Ivanova insisted. "What if the welcoming committee returns with the entire welcome wagon?" Marcus mused. "I can handle it, Marcus. I don't need your protection." she rumbled. "I've spent plenty of hours Down Below without you covering for me." Marcus rubbed his beard and replied, under his breath "Perhaps not as many as you think." "Damn it, Marcus! Have you been following me?" she demanded. "Not following, actually. Just watching out for trouble." he shrugged. "I'm a Ranger. It's what I do." "You're not MY Ranger." Ivanova scolded. "Watch over Delenn or Scully, but leave me alone - I've got a station to run. Just because I helped find a cure for the virus, don't think you owe me anything." "Susan, I'm not doing it because I'm obligated to. I'm doing it because I care about what happens to you." Marcus was clearly becoming flustered by her refusal to accept his presence. His heart clutched at his throat, anxious to tell her that he wanted to be near her because he loved her. Meanwhile Mulder felt awkward listening to a private conversation that had an eerie familiar ring to it. He cleared his throat and said "Maybe I should leave you two alone to work this out." "NO !" Ivanova and Marcus answered firmly and at the same time. She stepped closer to Mulder and told him "You can't go wandering around by yourself down here...." Marcus threw his hands up. "Oh! So you can protect Agent Mulder but I can't protect you." "He doesn't know how dangerous this place is." Ivanova argued. "For God's sakes, the man hunts killers for a living. I think he can handle a few minutes alone without your body as a shield." Marcus replied sarcastically. "What the hell is that suppose to mean?" she snapped. "Mulder's weak but he's not an invalid. You practically carried him down here." Marcus replied without stopping to think how jealous he sounded. "Hey!" Mulder shouted from dark corner. "I think I found it." "Found what?" asked the distracted Commander. "His nest." Mulder moved aside so they could see the mound of shredded papers and rags stuck together with a slimly substance. "Bile." Mulder explained, "I smelled it from over there." "I'm not surprised with that nose." Marcus mumbled under his breath. Ivanova gave Marcus a stern look but quickly cracked a smile, as she tapped the comm link. When she reported in, she learned that Scully had identified a suspect who worked on several ships over the last few weeks. He went by the name Albert Graves and Mulder's hunch was right - he bore an unmistakable resemblance to Tooms - but there was no station record to match the name. Zach had already sent a team to intercept him on the Zoloco. Ivanova recommended sending someone to watch his nest in case he returned. Mulder offered to stay but Ivanova argued that Marcus was better suited to stand watch, while they went back to C and C. Shortly after leaving Marcus, Mulder and Ivanova were ambushed by the same men who stopped them earlier. They held their own until Ivanova was distracted by a loud groan from Mulder. Suddenly a sharp blow struck her knee and she collapsed. Before any of the attackers could swoop down on her, Marcus appeared from nowhere and tore through the mob. Those who could still move, ran away but Marcus singled out the leader. "Hey I thought we had a deal." Conners whined. "We leave you alone, you leave us alone." "When you hurt her, you hurt me. And I'm very unpleasant went I get hurt." Marcus threatened. His breath was ragged and his eyes burned deadly stares into the man who dared to hurt Susan. Luckily for the gangster, the security force arrived and Marcus reluctantly surrendered his prey. Turning quickly to kneel beside Ivanova, Marcus nearly collapsed himself. Ivanova stood up as they steadied each other. "My hero." she said sarcastically. "I think you may have overdid it, Marcus." Marcus was too lost in the sensation of her holding herself tightly against him to respond. Slowly, Ivanova became aware of the same sensation and she became just as still. Their shared silence was broken by a near by groan. "Mulder!" Ivanova started to move towards his but Marcus unconsciously tightened his grip. "Don't worry about me." Mulder grunted, as he rose to his feet. "What's an X-File without a little bodily abuse?" "Sounds like just another a day at the office." came a friendly voice. Scully approached with the rest of the Security Team. She gave Mulder and quick hug then issuing orders like a pro, she had the team set up so they could capture Graves if he returned. Once she was satisfied, she took Mulder by the hand and said "This case is still open. I need you to figure out where this guy is headed if he figures out what's going on and tries to leave the station in a hurry." "I love you, too, Scully." Mulder replied with a smile, trailing behind her. As they left, he gestured towards Ivanova and Marcus, who were still holding on to one another. Scully just smiled as he whispered "Just another day at the office." Marcus was waiting for her to let go first but to his surprise she seemed to be doing the same. They both knew they couldn't stand there hugging one another indefinitely but neither could find a reason to stop. The moment ended when C and C called on her link to let her know it was time for the "Voice of the Resistance" to go on air. She abruptly pulled away and Marcus staggered slightly at the loss of support. "Come on." she said firmly as she offered her arm. "I'll help you back to your quarters on the way to C and C." "My hero." he grinned in response, allowing her to support part of his weight. For the second day in a row, Commander Ivanova was seen walking arm in arm with a handsome man in public. But this time, she didn't seem to mind. _______________________________ Mulder and Scully sat in the Security office as Zach scrutinized the reports and occasionally glanced at the security monitors. It had been three hours since the teams were dispatch to arrest Graves but so far no one had seen him. Zach rubbed his jaw and shook his head. "I think he's on to us." Zach said grimly. Mulder nodded as he said "Too many people involved. He's savage but he's also very intelligent. He's the perfect observer of crowds. He watches the ebbs and the flows, then he targets the one victim he claims as his own. The he stalks them, letting the crowds fade away until the right moment then ...." "OK, OK, I got the picture." Zach interrupted the spooky narrative. "So what's his next move? How we gonna catch him if I can't send a security team after him?" "He's most likely going to hop aboard a transport with a band of refugees. Where ever they'd be headed would be habitable and he could check it out to see if it had a suitable home for the next thirty years. If word has gotten out that the civil war on Minbar is over, he might try for there again. " Mulder proposed. "Either way, we gotta stop him before he gets off the station. It' s going to be tough holding back ships leaving for either of those destinations." Zach worried. Just then the team stationed Down Below reported that they found Graves's stash of trinkets, positively linking him to the murders. But they also found a strange pin that looked similar to the Ranger insignia. "My Ranger pin !" Scully gasped. She and Mulder explained to Zach about her pin. Out of respect for the true Rangers, she chose not to wear it on the station. It made sense that what ever attracted Tooms to her also attracted Graves. Scully gave Mulder a nervous look, as if she was asking a silent question. He sighed heavily and nodded, then closed his eyes and covered his face, like he was hold back his tears. Zach watched and waited for a explanation. Scully spoke for them both. "He's after me so we'll set a trap. Tonight I'll be alone in my quarters. Mulder and one of your men will be next door waiting for my signal." "You said yourself he's fast. How can we get to you before he....uh..." Zach paused searching for the right word. "Has dinner?" Mulder finished unconcern about delicate terms. He knew Scully didn't need to be shielded from the harsh reality. "We already talked to Dr. Franklin about applying a flexible transparent re-enforced abdominal dressing. It's almost impossible to puncture with a blunt object. We'll wire it to the comm link so even if he knocks her out, the instant he touches her we'll be alerted." "You planned on setting a trap ahead of time?" Zach asked, amazed at the prearranged plan. Mulder took Scully's hand in his firm grip and answered "History has a way of repeating itself but it can only help you if you choose to learn it's lesson. Lesson One - The prey usual loses. Lesson Two - The predator is most vulnerable when he attacks because he assumes he's going to win. Lesson Three - Never underestimate the prey 's best friend." Mulder kissed Scully as Zach shrugged his shoulders wondering how many men would use their lover for a decoy. ___________________________________ Scully paced around the room nervously waiting for the beast to strike. She wished she could talk to Mulder but he had to stay hidden with Zach next door. Even Marcus wasn't available since she requested Zach and Ivanova not to tell him about the plan, since he still needed his rest and would insist on being there if he knew. Ivanova was in the Security office, monitoring the whole operation and Franklin was on stand-by if things got out of hand. Still, the role of live bait was never an easy one. She sat down and reflected on the unusual turn of events that brought her and Mulder to this place and time. How they continued to find purpose and happiness with their unique partnership no matter where they were. Then she thought of `her Ranger', Marcus. He almost seemed more at home in her time than here but only because on B5 she could see the sadness in his eyes each time Ivanova pushed him away. Ivanova seemed more interested in Mulder than the man that loved her so deeply. Scully felt no jealousy only sympathy for the unrequited romantic Ranger. As Scully pondered the future, she sifted through the clothing she brought from her time. Suddenly she frozen when she discovered her jacket had a Ranger pin attached to it - a real Ranger 's pin. She activated the link "Mulder, something's wrong. Get over here now!" Mulder and Zach flew into the room, PPG's drawn. Scully signaled them to put down the guns and asked Mulder how her replica pin could have been replaced by an authentic one. They concluded that Marcus must have switched hers and his while he was in Med Lab. They notified Ivanova who told them that each Ranger received only one pin which meant Graves stole the replica pin from Marcus, not Scully. He was the intended victim, and in his weaken state he could easily be overpowered. Once Ivanova realized Marcus's life was in danger again, she dashed from the office towards his quarters. __________________________________________ Marcus laid across is his bed, too restless to sleep. He had removed his cloak, shirt and boots in an attempt to get some rest but the memory of being so close to Susan for so long made it impossible. But the sweet memory was marred with knowledge that he dare not get any closer. Each time he tried to share his heart, she would shut him out. Did she truly believe her strength would be diminished if she strayed from her solitary life? Or maybe she felt he was too involved in his own life to share a part of it with her. Marcus refused to accept the fact that she just wasn't interested in him. He tried to recall every moment spent with her, searching for a clue of how to breech the barrier between them. As each scene played out in his head, he began to cry softly as he realized she had no idea how much he loved her. Of course she cared about him but no more than she did for Sheridan or the others, perhaps less. He had waited to tell her because he wanted this relationship to go right but in truth there was no relationship at all. There was not a barrier between them but a gigantic chasm, a void he would gladly leap into if there was any hope she would see his feelings for what they were. Mulder and Scully were lucky. They merely had to say the words and the emotions followed. For Marcus and Susan to come together, a whole new language had to be invented before he could express his feeling so she would understand. If only she had Dana's sensitive heart or if he had Mulder's naive vulnerability... Marcus cut off any thoughts of things that would never be. He wiped the tears from his face and vowed his love to Susan, without expectations or conditions. She could choose to accept it or ignore it but he had no choice but to give it. He would continue to love her, whether or not she cared for him. Even Commander Susan Ivanova was not strong enough to break the heart of a Ranger. His resolve brought him an uneasy sleep but sleep, none the less. It was during Marcus's state of unconsciousness that Graves slipped into the room unnoticed, through the air duct. The glowing yellow eyes of the predator focused on his prey who stirred as if alerted by some silent alarm. Marcus sat up, fought off the drowsiness and reached for his pike. Before he could arm himself, a blur attacked him, seizing his legs and hauling him to the floor. Marcus quickly rolled to the side and leapt to feet, still unsure of who or what his assailant was. Graves sprang from the floor but Marcus was able to deflect his charge. Enraged, Graves roared and pounce on him again. Marcus's body was still weaken from the virus and his earlier fight, and he succumbed to the onslaught of force. He was stunned as his head slammed against the wall, and his body slumped to the ground. Pinned to the floor, Marcus saw the man-breast prepare to tear him open when suddenly he heard another, more human roar. Appearing all of a sudden, Ivanova kicked Graves clear across the room then shot him before he could recover. Ivanova kept her eyes and her aim on the motionless body across the room as she kneeled beside Marcus. She glanced quickly at his bare abdomen. "Are you all right?" she asked. She heisted for a moment, staring as his exposed upper body, then returned her sights on Graves. Before he could answer Zach, Mulder and two Security officers flew into the room. The officers immediately grabbed Graves, who was still alive but badly wounded by the shot. Zach ordered his men to rush Graves to Med Lab and hold him there under guard. As Ivanova relaxed, Marcus became aware of what just happen. "I...I'm fine, I think. Just a bit bruised." he mumbled, preoccupied by her nearest once again. "Let me take a look at it." she ordered as she put way her weapon. Marcus gestured to the black and blue mark on his flank where Graves held him down. Ivanova tenderly brushed her fingers over the bruise and Marcus gasped, as much from the sensation of her touch as from the pain. Instead of pulling her hand away, she allowed her touch to drift across his stomach then come to rest on his chest. "I think you'll live." she concluded with a serious tone without looking him in the eye. Marcus no longer felt any pain, only the wild beating of his heart under her palm. Zach was saying something about getting there just in time and Mulder was offering to help him on to the bed, but all Marcus could concentrate on was the woman who was gently lifting his torso off the floor. Her expression was softer than he ever seen before but she was determined not to gaze into his eyes. He whispered so only she would hear. "Susan, you saved my life...again." She smiled and turned to face him when another voice called his name. "Marcus!" Scully cried as she entered the room. "Is he all right?" she asked Mulder. Mulder pointed to him and Ivanova still seated on the floor. Ivanova signaled for Scully to join them. "You tell me, Doctor." She moved aside and Marcus shuttered slightly as she broke contact, but he relaxed when she lightly rested her hand on his. Scully gave Marcus a quick cursory exam, checking for any other wounds. As her small hands gently moved over his body, Marcus became acutely aware of his feelings for the two women who seemed so intent on his well being. Dana was so open and willing to share her feelings and her compassion, yet she belonged with another man in another time. And Susan, who he'd vowed his heart to but refused to belong to any man, would only show him tenderness if he was suffering. His stern self-discipline, already weak from physical and mental exhaustion, threaten to collapse totally as he surrendered to the pleasant sensations of two potent women. Zach raised an eyebrow at the exchange but mumbled something to Mulder about checking on Graves in Med Lab. Mulder nodded unconsciously in response, as his attentions were focused on Marcus as well. He knew exactly what Marcus was thinking, not because Mulder was telepathic but because he too had mixed feeling for Scully and Ivanova. Watching him receive care from both women became almost unbearable, so all at once, Mulder grabbed Marcus and hauled him roughly to the only chair in the room. The sudden move caught Scully off guard but she quickly realized what was bothering Mulder and so she said nothing. Ivanova, on the other hand, was still intent on Marcus and took offense to Mulder's interruption. Ivanova seized Mulder's arm as he settled Marcus in the chair. "Be careful." she scolded. "He's still in shock." "Oh so now you're the doctor." Mulder shot back. "Scully said he' s OK. I wanted to ask him some questions about Graves and I don't want to sprawl on the floor with all three on you. Marcus, did you see....." Mulder stopped short as an image formed in his mind. It was vaguely familiar but as it became clearer, he realized it was never a part of his conscious mind. Mulder saw the stunned look on Ivanova's face and he knew that some how he was sharing the image with her via another unintentional link. It was the image he'd had before of making love to her. In a serious but concerned tone he asked "Scully, can you get the information from Marcus? I need to speak with the Commander for a minute." Scully nodded and watched as Mulder and Ivanova ducked out into the corridor. Scully knew that they had some kind of bond between them. It was obvious the first day they meet. But unlike her connection to Marcus, which was open and caring, theirs was reluctant and confrontational. It appeared Mulder wanted to come to terms with it before they left. Scully sighed at the thought that Mulder still found it so hard to open up to her and tell her his feelings. The previous night he refused to talk about Marcus or Ivanova and insisted on talking only about the case. For all the milestones they'd reached in their relationship, there was still a long road ahead. Her only choice was to give him the space he needed to settle things his way and to trust in her own emotions. With that thought, she turned to Marcus who looked confused and guilty. "Relax, Marcus. It's not your fault It's just Mulder's way." she reassured him. Marcus sighed and confessed "This time, I think it is my fault. I think I forced my thoughts into his head. I'm not a telepath but there 's something that connects us - you, Susan, Mulder and me. I can't explain it but I know it's real." Scully could help but smile. "Marcus, that has been my motto ever since I joined the X-Files." She stood beside him and rested her hand on his shoulder. "Don't worry. Mulder's accustom to sorting out foreign images in his head. It's part of his job. And I suspect he's explaining that talent to Susan right now." Suddenly, Marcus tried to stand up but Scully's touch forced him to sit back down. He pleaded "Dana, you have to stop him. If he tells her that those are my thoughts...." Now she understood. Mulder had captured Marcus's images of his love and passion for Susan, images he couldn't share with her directly. Now he was afraid she would shun him completely, refusing even his friendship. Scully recalled her insecurity about Mulder before Paris then quietly calmed Marcus. "Rangers never lie. And it' s your duty to protect the truth once it's brought to light." Marcus sighed in agreement and slumped in the chair. "Being honorable can be such a bore when you're human." "Truth and honor inspires passion even when romance has faded." Scully added hopefully. Marcus sighed again and added "Susan's passion usually ends up with someone bleeding." _____________________________________ "All right Mulder, what was that?!" Ivanova demanded the instant the door closed behind them. "That's the second time you sent me that image. Is this some kind of stupid joke or is it one of your sick fantasies?" Mulder stood face to face with the angry Commander and replied "Part of it IS my fantasy. But I want to make love to Dana, not you. Your image came from someone else and you know it. You're just too afraid to admit that you wanted to see that image." Ivanova seethed at his remark but refrained from physical violence. "Are you trying to tell me I want to make love to Marcus?!" "No." Mulder replied firmly. "I'm trying to tell you that you like the idea of Marcus wanting to make love to you." She stormed away but only took four steps before halting. While turning to face him, she declared "I'm not afraid to face him. It's just that.....I don't think he can handle losing anyone else." "Well, that's very noble of you but don't you think he should decide that for himself." Mulder challenged. She shrugged in response. "Susan, what do you want?" "I want to win this war and all the battles that follow. I want to command my own ship and explore the galaxy. Nothing that requires Marcus to mean anymore to me than a comrade-in-arms." she replied coldly. "But where will you go when the battles are over? Who will share your victories and believe in you when you lose faith in yourself? What mysteries are greater than unlocking the secrets of a human heart?" The questions were the same questions he'd asked himself just a short while ago. "I can't answer those question." Ivanova answered curtly. "Neither could I until I realized that Dana was the answer - to my quest and to my life. I know you and Marcus aren't as close as Dana and I but can't you at least accept the extreme possibility that you could have a future together?" Ivanova turned and studied his sincere expression as she pondered his words. "Extreme possibility? That's a convenient way to allow yourself to believe in the impossible." Mulder made no reply but he grabbed her and kissed her passionately. Once she recovered from the shock , she shoved him against the wall. "Mulder, what the hell is wrong with you?!" she shouted. Breathless and wild-eyed Mulder replied "You just experienced the impossible - a man who died 300 years ago expressing the desires of another man, one who bravely faces shadows but cowers before you. Susan, I feel his passion as if it was my own. Maybe part of it is mine. I can't hid it like he can. Either face him or accept another impossibility." He moved towards her, unafraid of another outburst. "What about Scully?" she demanded. "How can you stand there and kiss me like that if you love her so much?" "Dana understands me. And Marcus. I swear this is for his benefit, not mine although I'd be lying if I said I wasn't enjoying it." He embraced her once again as she stood there, at a loss for words or action. "And you'd be lying if you said you weren't enjoying it, too." he whispered as his lips brushed her cheek. On hearing his words, Ivanova pushed him off angrily. "All right! Fine! I'm talk to Marcus. Just stop acting like that." Mulder backed away and then opened the door to Marcus's quarters. Ivanova glared at Mulder as she stepped in and he grinned in response. Looking towards his partner who was sitting on the edge of the bed besides Marcus, he said "Come on, Scully. We have a suspect to interrogate in Med Lab." Scully knew Mulder had pulled something on Ivanova to get her to stay with Marcus but she knew better than to ask. Instead she just nodded politely as she traded places with the Commander. Ivanova sighed with resignation and said "Marcus, we have to talk." "Talk?" he replied, slightly confused by her command. "Yes. We have to talk...about us." she continued. "Us?" he asked, even more confused. He looked to Mulder for some clue as to what happened in the corridor but the two agents quickly left the Ranger and the Commander alone. The last words they heard as they left, were Ivanova telling Marcus to put on his shirt before she forgot what she came to talk about. ____________________________________ Zach greeted Mulder and Scully in Med Lab with a big surprise. Graves was actually a woman, who claimed her real name was Alice Marie Tooms. Mulder picked up the questioning by asking if she was born on Earth before 1900, if she was related to another mutant with the same last name, and if she knew how she came to be so drastically different. Zach realized it was not your normal investigation but when he consider his `expert' was over 300 years old, most conventions didn't apply. Tooms appeared lethargic and spoke in single words or short sentences. She stated she was the sister of Eugene Victor Tooms and `something happened' to them with they were young. She had no recollection of how they changed but afterwards she was separated from her brother. She lived in Eastern Europe until her 6th `awakening' when she left Earth to find `where she belonged.' Mulder pressed her for details but she had no way to express the force that drove her into space. She was a killer. She made no efforts to hid her guilt but she claimed she only attacked to survive. And now, perhaps she knew that her survival depended on telling the truth. Mulder realized he didn't feel the cold evil grip of death that her brother evoked. Instead, she seemed surrounded by sadness and mourning for a life never realized. Mulder's accusing voice change to one of compassion. "Something was done to change you. We want to help you but we need to know more about how this happened to you." She made no reply. "What do you remember? A vision? A dream? Anything..." She suddenly glared at him with an icy stare. Even the room felt colder, as her sympathetic air vanished in the wake of her hate. Zach and the Security Guard shifted away from her. Mulder turned away from her to ask Franklin a question. All at once, she burst into a fury of devastation, throwing Mulder into the Security Team. Scully attempted to block her escape but the beast knocked her down with one blow, then dragged the body into the main lab. Mulder recognized the piercing yellow predator's eyes and knew that Scully was her intended prey. He grabbed the PPG from Zach's belt and quickly caught up with the mutant. Scully was struggling but Tooms was ready to strike. Mulder fired without hesitation, aiming for a kill shot to the head. His shot was right on target. Mulder ignored the dead body that could have been the key to answering the many mysteries that plagued his life and focused instead on the living soul of the woman that blessed his life. "Dana! Are you hurt?" "I'm fine, Mulder." she replied shakily. Looking at the body, she frowned and said "I guess we'll never know where they came from." Zach gave his opinion. "If you ask me, they came from Hell. And I 'm glad they went back." Mulder sighed. "Maybe in another couple of life times I can find the truth, instead of killing it." Dr. Franklin, who witnessed the whole affair, quietly said "It could be a Null Revelation." Mulder and Scully had never heard that expression before. "It's a part of the religion I believe in - I'm a Foundationalists. The `Null Revelation', simply put, is the realization that some truths are better left unknown." Mulder couldn't help but smile. "How about that Scully. They based a whole religion on what happens when I screw-up." "Funny," she replied as she hugged him tightly "I thought that was my job description." _____________________________________ That evening, Mulder and Scully received an unusual visitor. When Mulder answered the door, he expected to see Ivanova or Marcus but came face to face with a large alien in what appeared to be formal battle armor. Recalling his quick introduction to alien races, Mulder blurted out "You're a Narn!" "G'Kar of the Restored Narn Regime, Mr. Mulder." the alien replied proudly, as he stood at attention. "Captain Sheridan asked me to speak to you and your partner, and to relay a message to you." Mulder enthusiastically ushered G'Kar into the room and introduced Scully. G'Kar's bearing reminded her of the many Naval officers she met as a child but she seemed to accept the concept of aliens better than Mulder. Her logical fact-based reasoning had already accepted the presence of various races while on the station but it was still a point of fascination to her partner. G'Kar began his message in earnest as Mulder stared at his skin texture intensely. "The Captain has informed me that you came to the station in hopes of solving an ancient mystery. One which may led your people to a brighter future. My people have shared that same desire. We studies the words of our prophets and great leaders in hopes of preparing for the coming of the Shadows. We felt that surely, the truths of the past would enlighten our present." Mulder became engaged by his story and asked "And did it make a difference?" G'Kar clasped his large hand on Mulder's shoulder then replied "Yes but it wasn't what won the war. Nor was it what won the freedom of my people." Mulder and Scully gazed at him expectantly as he paused to consider his next words. Pointing to his prosthetic eye, G'Kar said "Do you see this? It's a human eye. I lost mine to a mad Centauri Emperor. But I understand now that losing that eye made me look to other worlds, other possibilities, for the answers I sought, for myself and my people. We had always believed our future depended on our strength but I discovered that it depended more on our humility. Do you understand what I'm saying, Mr. Mulder and Miss Scully? Solving your great mystery may give you some clarity but only by truly understanding your ultimate goal can open yourself to the opportunities to attain it." Scully nodded thoughtful "In other words, looking back will teach, but looking forward will achieve." "Exactly!" G'Kar beamed brightly at the small woman. "Sheridan wished me to share these thoughts with you so you would not despair over what you may perceive as a failure. I hope it helps." Mulder sighed but finally nodded as well. "And there as something else the Captain wished you know. In fact he asked me to relay this to you specific, Mr. Mulder." "Pardon me for asking, but why did he ask you? Why not tell me himself?" Mulder wondered out loud. "Captain Sheridan said something about getting carried away and saying `too much.' Frankly, I don't know what he was speaking of but here is his message - The Captain told me to inform you that he has made a hobby of studying `black bag' operations, covert organizations and secret projects. Apparently you share that same interest." Mulder 's eyes lit up as he listened intently. "At any rate, he told me to let you know that history tells of a covert organization that was overthrown nearly three hundred years ago, reveling years of deception and manipulation within the government. He said it was a cycle that repeats itself over and over but each time, a new `Army of Light' appears to liberate the public consciousness. The Captain said you would understand the importance of the message." Mulder smiled broadly. The Captain was trying to drop hints to Mulder about the Consortium without changing the timeline. He took G' Kar's hand and shook it vigorously. "Thank you for taking the time to deliver the message. It does mean quite a lot to me." G'Kar released his hand and saluted by bringing both fists to his chest and bowing. "Good day, Sir and remember - we must make our own honor, just as we must make our own future." The Narn bowed to Scully then left their quarters. Mulder pondered the message and the messenger and commented "Who would have ever guessed I would be getting advice about my failure to prove the involvement of extra-terrestrials from another alien." Scully wrapped her arm around him and gave him a reassuring hug. "Well, at least it was good advice." He kissed her and asked "So tell me - if Sheridan is right and we do expose the conspiracies, how can you say we made our own future? Isn't the future inevitable?" "No more inevitable than us becoming lovers." she replied seductively. "A series of events had to occur to make it possible. A thousand individual decisions all directed to one goal. Inevitable by design." She drew him to the bed and they fell upon it in a tentative passion. But before Mulder surrendered to his desires, he surrendered to his tired mind and body and Scully found herself pondering just when the inevitable would actually occur. _____________________________________ The next day, Delenn returned from Minbar with the good news that the civil war was over and that a new Grey Council was formed. Pleased to have her back, Sheridan told her all the details of the unusual events involving their unique visitors. She was just as fascinated by his account of the growing relationship between Marcus and Ivanova. It wasn't a romance but it was more than a friendship. Sheridan joked that maybe in the light of their own engagement, they had started a trend. Delenn smiled but replied serious. "There is a trend but it started long before you and I ever came to be. I would like very much to meet this pair from the 20th century." Sheridan nodded. "I think they would love to meet you. You see, Mulder has this thing about aliens...." "Then I can understand why you find him so interesting. He has something in common with you." Delenn observed with her own brand of teasing. Sheridan escorted Delenn to Mulder and Scully's quarters. Sheridan introduced her proudly. Her first words were "On behalf of myself and my people, thank you for all you have done to save Minbari lives, both during your time and in ours. And I personally want to thank you for risking your lives to save Marcus." The Agents were impressed by her stately elegance and kind words, but felt awkward at first. Then as the conversation continued, Mulder asked a question that breached the formal confines of the conversation. "If you hadn't transformed into your current `hybrid state', could you and Captain Sheridan conceive viable offspring?" Delenn smiled at the inquisitive man from the past, as his partner cringed at his lack of tact. "Actually, I am not, technically what you would call a hybrid. I am an evolved Minbari. Our past and our destiny are linked to my transformation. As for your question, any physical union between a human and a Minbari is not likely but the precedence does exist for compatible genetic structures." Sheridan and Scully marveled at her tactful answer, while Mulder thought of his next question. They spent two hours talking, once Mulder calmed down enough to let her ask some questions. She seem most interested in how their partnership was affected by their personal relationship. They thought she was asking because of her commitment to Sheridan but as the conversation wound down, she revealed her own conclusions. "The Minbari believe that our souls pass from lifetime to lifetime but that in each life time we seek the company of familiar souls. Souls which bind together, remain together." Mulder smiled and whispered to Scully. "See? I was right." She patted his hand quietly was if she really never cared if he was right about past lives. Scully was more interested in what Delenn had to say. Delenn continued. "But souls are not static. They change, learn new ways from each life. Souls may drift apart just as close friend do but given the opportunity, mated souls will always find one another." Her gaze became intense as she said "I believe your souls are here on Babylon 5, living this life time as Marcus Cole and Susan Ivanova." Mulder, Scully and Sheridan sat there stunned. It made perfect sense in every way. The connections between them were more than coincidences; they were inevitable. Scully thought for a moment and slowly said "But Susan and I are so different..." Delenn took her hand and replied "That is because your soul exists in Marcus. You are both reluctant warriors, deep in your compassion, loyal beyond question and bound by your honor." Turning to Mulder, she explained "And you and Susan. Cautious to start a fight but always determined to finish it. Cynical and suspicious but only to protect a heart that can't tolerate betrayal. Passionate and obsessive, with a suppressed desire to love and to be loved." Sheridan grinned and said "Delenn, you are amazing." Delenn smiled in return and addressed the Agents again. "I may be wrong. But for Marcus and Susan's sake, I hope not. They may yet find the joy of being together, as you have." Delenn left with one final remark. "When you return to your time, this place will seem very far away. But always remember, you have touched the dreams of the future and they are a part of you. Never despair of tomorrow, for it IS you." Mulder proclaimed as the great leader left them, "Now, that's an alien!" ____________________________________ After almost a week at Babylon 5, Mulder and Scully prepared to leave the 23rd century. Draal, the keeper of the Great Machine on Epsilon 3, devised a way to return them home and Ivanova carefully explained the plan to the Agents. "Basically, we're putting you in the module decoy I dropped on Earth when I arrived in your time. You' ll hop out of it before anyone finds it , and everyone will assume you 're just there investigating the sighting. The propulsion unit will self destruct on entry and what is left will easily be dismissed as a hoax." She paused waiting for questions but the pair seemed satisfied with the plan. "Only problem is, we have to get you to Earth first, then move you back in time. Please don't ask for details or I'll have to give you a lecture on jump gates. Unfortunately, right now Earth Force doesn't like strange ships hovering around so we can't send you to Earth outright. Draal has calculated a way to send you 30 years into the future, drop the module then send you back to your time." "Did you have to go through all that just to get to our time and back?" Scully asked curiously. "No, I had the benefit of a highly maneuverable craft and years of experience sneaking around detection grids. You'll be blind and on automatic settings. And by the way, if there is a problem, you can get out when you land on Earth 30 years from now but the module will time jump with or without you 30 minutes after it arrives so stick together." she warned. A silence fell over the pair as they prepared to board the module which would fling them forward then back into time. Sheridan, Franklin and Zach had said their good byes before they left the station. Marcus made the final check on the module then handed them each a small device. "These are time stabilizers. Wear them and they' ll activate automatically until you return to you're own time. It's essential that you destroy them as soon as you arrive. You wouldn't want your cigarette smoking friend to get a hold of one of these." Marcus gave Mulder a hearty hand shake and said "Thank you for saving my life..." then he gazed at Ivanova who was busy talking to Zathras. "...and for letting her know MY heart." Scully gently touched Marcus's cloak and took back the replica pin as she handed him the real Ranger badge. "It was a nice gesture" she explained "but this one means more to me. It's the one you gave me." He kissed her softly on the forehead and sighed. "I will always be `your Ranger'." he whispered, then stepped away from the module. Mulder shook hands with Ivanova as she said "Sorry I never got to play one-on-one with you. Maybe another time." "Your time or mine?" he joked. They lingered in the hand shake for a moment longer than necessary but said nothing more. Scully came up and put her hands around their clasped hands. "Mulder, it's all right." Scully whispered. "I know you need to say good bye." then she smiled at Ivanova as she told her "Never underestimate what you're capable of, even when it concerns love. Marcus never has." Scully climbed into the module and left Mulder and Ivanova alone. Mulder embraced the woman with the dark eyes and a familiar soul, but this time she didn't protest. His lips brushed against her ear as he whispered "...maybe another time..." Ivanova gently kissed his cheek then they broke apart. "Good luck in the coming battle, Commander." he said smartly once he distanced himself. "Likewise to you Agent Mulder." she replied just as sharply. "Remember, even if the Truth is Out There, you gotta make them listen if you want to win the war." said the Voice of the Resistance as she sealed the module. ___________________________________ There were no windows or working instruments in the module so the only indication that they arrived in the future was a jolt as the module contacted Earth. Then the unit seemed to shut down into an idle mode. Mulder tested the door and it open easily. He saw a lush forest around him and the air was clear. "We must have won the war." he declared. A voice answered from the wilderness. "Indeed we did. At least that war." A distinguished looking older man emerged and said "Hello, my friend." "MARCUS?" Mulder stared in disbelief as Scully rushed outside to confirm what she heard. It was Marcus, older but with the same unmistakable gilt in his eyes. "I came because I knew to you'd be here and I thought you'd like to hear the ending to a story you started a very long time ago." the aged Ranger explained. Marcus told the story of how Sheridan was captured and Ivanova took charge of the fleet. When they learned of a plan to ambush the fleet at the rendezvous point with specially modified battle cruisers, Ivanova chose to go ahead with the White Star Ships and destroy the cruisers to clear the way to Earth for the remaining forces. In the hours before the battle, Marcus convinced her to get some rest, promising he would wake her well before they arrived. When the time came, he hovered over her, unable to disturb her perfect sleeping beauty. Suddenly, her eyes opened and she asked what he was thinking. He'd already confessed that he loved her during their talk back at the station but he told her once again, and vowed to stay at her side always. To his surprise, she took him in her arms as never before and told him that he only need remain as long as they needed each other. Then she kissed him and explained she needed his faith and love more now than ever. Before long they were locked in a lover's embrace and for the first time Marcus knew the intimacies of a woman's touch. Not just any woman, the woman he'd waited his entire life to be with. They shared one perfect moment, frozen in time, before facing death in combat. During the battle, the cruisers were destroyed but Ivanova was mortally wound. Shortly afterwards Sheridan as freed but Ivanova was dying despite everything the doctors could do. Marcus told her she had given him the greatest gift he could ever ask for - her love- and she replied that her only regret was not having to the time to enjoy that gift with him. Marcus wanted to keep her aboard during the final battle but Delenn convinced him that she would be better cared for at Babylon 5. Just before the battle, Marcus learned of an alien healing machine secretly kept on Babylon 5 which could save her life but only at the cost of another person's life. Dr. Franklin's records showed that it could transfer life energy from one person to heal another but the machine was impossible to control so it's use was forbidden. Marcus saw his one chance to ultimately express his love. He abandoned the fleet to return to Babylon 5. Once there, he took Med Lab by storm and connected himself to her via the machine. As his life energy flowed into her, he laid next to her in a final embrace. As Ivanova felt her body revive, she recognized the life force as Marcus. She fought her way into consciousness and was able to stop the machine before it drained him completely. Marcus was weaken beyond human limits and his body was unable to sustain itself so he was put in cryo storage in hopes of a future miracle. When the revolution was over, Babylon 5 became the home of the new Interstellar Alliance with Sheridan as President and Ivanova remained with Earth Force. She was given her own command of a prototype ship but Ivanova never gave up on Marcus. After three years she finally found a way to reverse the affects of the machine, although it involved sacrificing part of her own life energy. Marcus continued to serve the Alliance as a Ranger but managed to earn the title of liaison for Earth Force patrols. Once again he was at Ivanova's side. Where ever her duties took her, he followed just as he promised. Their love affair ran hot and cold, and every night she would tell him that tomorrow she might decide she was better off without him. But when each tomorrow came, they remained together. Then one day about three years ago, Ivanova passed away in her sleep, as if her time was suddenly over. Marcus sought solace in his great mentor, Delenn, since Sheridan had suddenly past away years before. She explained that when Sheridan fell at Z'ha'dum, he came back on borrowed time, and that perhaps the same was true for Ivanova and her brush with death. She reminded Marcus that each moment of life is precious, but that merging of souls beyond life is another adventure. Marcus understood the ideals but his loneliness was almost unbearable until he realized that he and Susan had saved each other, but three years apart. Their life energy had been shared, including its limitations. So now, his time was ending soon. Her spirit called to him to complete what they started but without the threat of wars and revolutions. To finally meet as lovers first, instead of comrades. "The story will go on, of course." Marcus concluded. "My soul seeks peace but the journey is far from over." He took Mulder's hand in his grip, then held Scully's hand in his other hand and said "Time changes everything. Perhaps your future will be different than my present. But either way, I end this life with my greatest dreams fulfilled and I look forward of what lies ahead. All because you had faith of your beliefs. Now and always." He hugged them both then said his final good-bye. Mulder and Scully returned to the module, silent and somber. Suddenly Mulder announced excitedly "We did it, Dana. We lived a life time together -as partner and as lovers." "But it wasn't us." Scully replied serious. "It was Marcus and Susan. Even if Delenn was right and we share souls, we still need to work out OUR life together.". "Then let's start now." Mulder grinned and pulled her close. He kissed her passionately as his body pressed against hers. Scully shifted in his arms so she could return his attention but he slowly lowered her down into a padded bench. As Scully realized what he had in mind, she held him back. "You can't be serious! I thought you wanted to make love when the time was right." "We're beyond time, Dana. What could be more perfect?" he murmured softly. Finally she yielded to his advances, as he warned her " Just don't remove the time stabilizer. I want to go home with you, not your future self." She laughed lightly as they surrendered to the desires of their dreams and they experienced the powerful joining of body and soul. They managed to keep the stabilizers attached until the critical moments before climax. When Scully saw Mulder's device slip from his body, she grabbed his hips, pressed against him to trap it between them. Instantly, they were engulfed in the passions of a hundred life times together, their own climax lost in an ageless bonding of two souls. Mulder collapsed, exhausted and delirious, and the stabilizer fell to the floor. When nothing happen, they realized they had returned to their own time. The afterglow of their union was short lived as they hurried to destroy the stabilizers and exited the module. Fearful of being discovered, Scully made a dozen promises to Mulder if only he would move faster. Before long, they came across the Ford Ranger, right were they were parked when the first met Ivanova. They quickly climbed inside the cab, laughing at their narrow escape. They embraced again then hurried home to experience this new love in this lifetime. ___________________________________ EPILOGUE Several days later, as Mulder laid beside Scully in their bed, he awoke to a sound in the living room. He slipped from the bed, put on his robe and grabbed his gun. Peering out the door, he saw an unexpected visitor, calmly sitting on the couch, toying with an unlit cigarette. "This is breaking and entering ." Mulder snarled , holding his gun low at his side. "But I don't suppose calling the police is much of a threat. What you do want?" The CSM smiled his wary smile and answered "Just making sure you and Agent Scully are happy together." Mulder moved dangerous toward the man until he said "It could change, you know. But personally, I think you deserve a little happiness." Mulder cringed at his words but smiled inside as he remembered how Ivanova treated this smug player. Suddenly Mulder lunged at him and delivered a solid right cross to the CSM's jaw. His head snapped back and his eyes flew wide open. Mulder was ready to strike him again but he ducked behind his hands. It was the first time Mulder had ever seen him hide. Mulder growled "I'm done playing games with you. What are you doing here?" Still shocked by the unprovoked attack, the CSM replied, in nearly desperate tones "You and Agent Scully can have a life together, with or without the whole truth you seek. And your sister, Samantha - finding her doesn't have to be a part of uncovering our dirty little game. If you would only learn to stay clear, you could have a future..." Mulder laughed out loud as he remembered the man that cowered at Commander Ivanova's demands and how he bargained for the protection of The Operation. Mulder knew that the CSM's lies couldn't withstand the Army of Light that was yet to be. "I know my future. And yours." Just then Scully joined him. He smiled at her then turned to the CSM and said "In a hundred years, nothing you've ever done will matter. Only the truth will last." "Which truth? Yours or mine?" the older man quipped, cautiously trying to unnerve the agent. Mulder took Scully's hand and replied firmly "Ours. Now, get out before I show what I learned after 300 years of getting the crap beat of me." The CSM left with unaccustomed haste. He'd seen Mulder angry before but somehow, this time the Agent instilled real fear in his heart. Deep down, he knew Mulder was right, which made the whole encounter even more frightening to the aging operative. "Mulder, I guess there's some Ivanova in you after all." Scully remarked, as she watched their uninvited guest leave quickly. "Just takes a little faith in my own ability to take control of a situation...." Mulder replied with a confident smile. Then he drew his lover close and gently kissed her lips as he whispered "...and a little faith in us. How can I lose with you as a partner?" She kissed him back and declared "We'll let the truth be known. Together, in this life time and all the rest to come." Then together they went back to sleep to prepare to fight tomorrow's battles....... The future can never be certain. The events that took Mulder and Scully forward and back in time changed at least two worlds in different time lines. In their quest of the truth, the Agents fought and strived as bravely and resolutely as Marcus and Susan in their warships. But the real truth that they found, one that transcends all time and space, is a simple truth that rules the universe - faith manages, love triumphs. END This is a much less action orientated story than "Ranger X". It's more of a series of ideas that tie the themes together.
