I'm just borrowing....for now... He laid there staring up at his mother. So this is what she looked like? The first hours after his birth were filled with confusion and blood. Lots of blood. He had felt steady hands around his shoulders, gently pulling him to the world. And when he was finally delivered, he felt her presence near him. Turning his head to the sound of her voice, he cried out, waving his tiny fists. But he had felt another presence as well and it frightened him deep down in his bones. He knew that presence and he turned away from its cold, gently searching for his mother's spirit. She reached out to him then, and brought him to her chest. There nuzzled against her, the rapid beat of his newborn heart slowed to embrace her calm. He tried to blink her into view but her beautiful mystery evaded him. The room felt electric as loud swooshing noises filtered in through the front door. Then a man came out of the light searching for her, calling out her name. The tiny babe cuddled against his mother startled when hearing the man's voice and began to cry. He recognized this deep silken voice and he wanted to sound the alarm. His mother was growing weak and she needed the man to help her. Feeling the man come near him, the babe's crying grew softer. As he was scooped into the air, the tiny child drew a deep breath and then settled against his father's shoulder. Here he felt the safest. His father would save them both now. A few days eased by and the baby slept often, resting his tiny brain for the great journy ahead. His dreams were filled with color and magic, and he awoke to the soft humming of his mother. All of this time spent tiny knees curled to chin inside of her womb, and now he wanted to see her so badly. But again he could not blink her into view. "Give it time." His father breathed to him. "You shall see her soon." And so the babe was patient and loving, knowing that it was only a matter of time. But the next morning he woke up crying. He had a bad dream and his mother lifted him against her shoulder and began to pat his back. Her soft words were like music against his curving ear and he calmed rather quickely. But still he knew something was wrong because the man had not woken him that morning. The man was going away. "We're gonna be ok." His mother cried softly as she bounced him against her shoulder. His mother was still upset several days later and the baby soon began to gage her moods. She had spoken loudly that morning with another man whose voice he knew. And she had left for a little while that evening. That night he had another bad dream, but when he awoke his mother was there rubbing her thumb across his cheek and he had tried again to bring her into focus. She picked him up and settled down into a nearbye chair and he became excited for he knew his belly would now be full. He waved his tiny fists eagerly as she undid her blouse. The babe suckled hungrily at her breast and felt the warm milk run down his throat. He could feel her heartbeat through her chest and he felt a pang of guilt. He had been scaring her lately That morning when he made the stars move, she had been frightened. When he was finished, his mother brought him into bed with her and laid next to him running her fingers along his soft forhead. He looked at her again, determined to see her and he blinked forcing his week old brain to show her to him. Several seconds passed by and slowly fuzz was replaced with contrast and color. He saw her eyes first, the softest shade of blue. Next her lips, a faint red....then her hair gently faming her face. He found that he could not stop staring at her. Curling his tiny hand around her finger he turned his head against her neck and closed his eyes. She was so beautiful and so full of love for him. The babe felt suddenly very lucky. This woman had waited her whole life for him, and he loved her.
