Heartwrenchingly sad. Disclaimer: All things X belong to CC and 1013 Productions. Love to you all :) Author's Notes: I really enjoyed writing this story and had been looking for a long time to follow up A Baby's Love. It saddens me that I never got to finish any others in that series until after William was out of the picture. This is just my take, on how it should be :) A Baby's Tears by Starrlyte Here we go... The soft glow of a nightlight fills the room with a spectacular swirl of blue color as tiny buffalo dangle above his head. He watches them carefully. He has been on many visits before to less than familiar people, but this felt different. For a moment he considers crying. The reality of his plight begins to dawn on him when she doesn't come to tuck him in. He peers through the firm wooden slats of his crib at the new world around him. There are teddy bears he has never seen, and books he doesn't recognize. Tears sting his eyes and his breathing quickens. He isn't exactly sure where he is, and the thought frightens him. He tries to remember the sound of her voice, the image of her hair gently framing her crystal blue eyes. How he loved to look into her eyes. He gazes around the room hoping to find her, heartbroken when he doesn't. He whimpers and tries desperately to find comfort in this new environment. Little baby tears roll down his cheek and into his ear. He wipes at them angrily and stuffs a trembling hand into his mouth. He shivers against the chill in the air and curls himself tighter against the side of the crib. He can feel the seeping wetness in his diaper and a rumble in his belly. In a panic now, he turns his head from side to side and rolls over to get on his hands and knees. His whimpers soon turn into wails as he pulls himself up in the bed. His crying awakes the strangers and they race into his bedroom. Tears flow down his red face as his lower lip trembles. He makes his way from one side of the crib to another, slipping once and pulling himself back up. The strangers rush to his side. He frantically searches the room for her, his tiny heart beating at twice its normal rate. Just as the woman reaches the side of the crib, he turns away from her and reaches towards the moonlit window, crying his first words. "Mamamamamama" The man and woman exchange painful glances as they reach out to comfort the little boy. "We can't do this" She tells her husband, while trying to calm another woman's child. "Honey..." "No, I knew this wasn't right. There is a child for us out there somewhere. I have faith in God for that, but this child..." She smiles gently at the baby and cradles him close against her body. This child does not belong with us." The man nods silently. "Mamamamamama" "I know sweet baby boy. We're gonna get you back to your mama." He lays in his crib and tries to fight sleep. Dawn is breaking and he feels the lids of his eyes growing heavy. Rubbing at his tear stained face, he stuffs a hand in his mouth and cuddles against the side of the crib, his little whimpers rocking his weary body to sleep.
