BELIEVE THE LIE by Yvonne J Richards August 1997 *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Dana Scully sat at the side of the Reflecting Pool. It was, she thought, a very apt name for it. At this precise moment in time she too felt very reflective and she and Mulder had done much reflecting here in the past. The word stabbed at her breast. The Past. That's all it would be from now on. There would be no Present, No Future. All she had now was the Past. She thought back to the previous day, the day when she had, brazenly stood before him in that warehouse and told him, so matter-of-factly - they gave me this disease to make you believe. If she lived for a hundred years she would never forget the look in his eyes before he turned and walked away from her. That was the last time he would ever look at her. The last time she would ever be with him. The last time she would ever see him alive. She almost choked on the word. Alive. What in God's name was alive anyway? She didn't feel alive. Mulder wasn't alive. Was there any more meaning to the word than that? She thought not. Her only thought had been of yesterday. **Yesterday. All my troubles seemed so far away. Now it seems as if they're here to stay. Oh I believe in Yesterday.** *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Fox Mulder pulled the collar of his topcoat up around his neck to offer some protection from the biting Halifax wind. An informant had told him that he may well find what he was searching for in a medical research facility near Nova Scotia. He had dropped his George Hale personae, Scully was too familiar with that and had adopted Robert Dumont as his new partner in crime. Literally. He had a forty eight hour window in which to break into the facility, gain access to their highly computerized records and when retrieved, escape without notice. The Lone Gunmen had issued him with his new identity papers and they would again help with the surveillance and ultimate break in the security system. Frohike, he knew, would be unable to face Scully squarely until Mulder had returned with a cure for her cancer. Unfortunately, his feelings for her ran deeper than your average lusting and lying was something that Frohike had told him he didn't think he could manage. For that matter, Mulder's feelings ran deeper for Scully than he thought he could comfortably manage. A part of him had to get away from her when he found out why she had been given the cancer. His guilt had risen up in him and overpowered him. Yet again. He could carry this heavy burden, this cross that had been hewn for him. What he couldn't do was stay around Dana. He couldn't in all honesty submit her to anymore danger than she was already in. He had brought Skinner into the conspiracy and between them they had decided that the A.D. would temporarily close down the X-Files after his 'death' and put Scully on medical leave. That would at least keep her out of Bureau danger. He could see her now, blue eyes blazing, red hair tossing as she ranted and raved at Skinner. He could see her in his mind's eye. And in remembering her in this way, the guilt rose up in him again. **Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be. There's a shadow hanging over me. Oh Yesterday came suddenly.** *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* Mulder's haunted, shocked look pervaded her thoughts as she turned out the light on the nightstand. Her eyes were red and swollen from her grief at losing him, her cheeks stained with the outpouring of her emotion. Why didn't she stop him? Why hadn't she said anything else to him? Why, in God's name, didn't she tell him there and then that she didn't blame him? **Why he had to go I don't know. He wouldn't say. I said something wrong. Now I long for Yesterday.** But you can't turn back the hands of time, can you, Dana thought and two fresh tear tracks traced their way down her face. *~*~*~*~*~*~*~* As he lay on top of his motel bed in Nova Scotia, Fox Mulder wished with all his heart that he could go back in time. Not only to the day before Samantha was abducted, he'd always wanted that. But in a strange, ironical way, if that had never happened he would not now have even contemplated what he was about to do. He was going to break into a medical research facility to try to steal the compound that was being developed there. And, of course, if Samantha had never been abducted he would never have met Dana Katherine Scully. He couldn't even begin to imagine a life before Scully, and his blood ran cold at the thought of a life *without* her. Two solitary tears escaped from his eyes and he wished. He wished more than anything that he could go back in time just one day. To yesterday. The day when he had to make her believe the lie. THE END. "A beautiful and ineffectual angel, beating in the void his luminous wings in vain." From 'Shelley' by Matthew Arnold Doesn't that just sum up Mulder's quest beautifully?
