                         "Boss." Part 1 of 1.

Special Agent Dana Scully entered the outer office, looking neat
and efficient as always. She wore a bottle green jacket and
skirt, with a white, scoop-necked top. She carried a case-folder
under her right arm. Her eyes were shadowed, and her face
slightly pale, - the only tell-tale signs that she was
recuperating from a serious illness. - She approached the
     secretary at her desk.

"The Assistant Director is expecting me." she told the younger
woman, who nodded and pressed a button on the intercom.

     "Sir, Agent Scully is here."

There was a crackle, and then a disembodied voice replied, "Send
     her in."

The secretary got up from her seat, and opened the door to the
inner office to let Scully enter. She closed the door silently
     behind the agent.

The Assistant Director was seated at his desk at the end of the
long room. A window was behind him, and the light from it fell
on the back of his head. In front of his desk were two swivel
chairs, and beyond those, a mahogany conference table. He looked
up from his work, and gestured towards the chairs in front of
     him.

"Good morning, Agent Scully. - Please take a seat."

She sat carefully, placing the case-folder on her knees. The
Assistant Director quickly completed what he was doing, and
pushed his work to one side. He looked up at her, and met her
     steady gaze.

     "You've brought the McGivens case?"

"Yes, sir." Scully replied. She handed him the case folder. He
opened it, and began reading it through. When he had finished,
he picked up his pen, and signed the front of the folder, nodding
at her in approval. He got up from his seat, and turned to the
filing cabinet at the side of the window, slotting the folder
into the second drawer down. He closed the drawer again, and
then walked around his desk to the side where Scully was sitting.
Sitting on the edge of the desk in front of her, he studied her
appearance closely, noting the shadows under her eyes, the
tiredness in her expression, and the paleness of her skin.

"How've you been lately?" he asked her gently. His kind tone
surprised her, coming from a military man, and she looked up, and
     met his intense gaze.

"Not so bad..." she began, but the very fact that she still had
difficulty talking about it belied her words. "I still have the
nightmares, but not as often now. - I'll go and see Karen Kossoff
if they get to bad again. Physically, I'm over it, but
psychologically..." she paused, "I'll be fine, given time."

He nodded, "If you need a break, let me know."

     "Thank you, sir."

Sensing the meeting was at an end, Scully got to her feet, as did
he. Suddenly they seemed to be very close together. She raised
her eyes to look up at him, and saw sympathy for her, and a deep
caring in his face. Her heart caught for a moment, and then
resumed it's beating at a faster pace.

What was this? Surely she couldn't have feelings like this for
her boss? - But looking into his eyes, she saw her emotions
reflected there. Her breathing seemed to stop as she gazed into
his eyes, and everything else but the two of them went away. She
whispered his name, and he responded by lowering his face to
hers, and gently kissing her on the lips.

For a moment Scully felt panic. What was he doing? What was she
allowing him to do? - But it felt so right, that she realised in
the back of her mind she had wanted this for a long, long time.
This was why she always volunteered to bring the cases up alone.
She wasn't about to tell him "No" now.

He put his arms around her, drawing her closer, and she returned
his embrace. The passion between them escalated to an intensity
Scully would have thought impossible in such a brief space of
time, even for a committed couple. He reached for the collar of
her jacket, and slipped it down off her shoulders. She put one
hand behind his head, crushing his lips against hers, even as he
turned her about so that his desk was behind her. Then he was
fumbling with the buttons of his shirt, and she was helping him.
His shirt unbuttoned, his tie pulled loose, although still around
his neck, she laid her hands against his bare chest. He lifted
her up so that she was sitting on his desk, and kissed her again,
     almost savagely.

The intercom on the desk buzzed, and they both stopped and stared
at it. The secretary's voice came through, crackly and
     distorted.

"I'm sorry to bother you, Assistant Director Mulder, but Agent
Scully's partner, Agent Skinner, is here to see you."

Panicked, the two pulled apart. Buttons were hastily fastened,
and hair quickly reorganised. Then Mulder pressed the switch on
the intercom, glancing across his desk at Scully as he did so.
     She met his gaze.

     "Send him in, please."

Agent Skinner entered the office, and paused for a moment at the
door. The Assistant Director was standing behind his chair, and
Scully was sitting in front of his desk. Skinner smiled
     apologetically.

"Sorry I'm late. - Did I miss anything?"

                              The End.
