Can't take my eyes off you

ok, first time i've written this style of

story, so honest feedback is required, ok?

but only honest feedback about the GOOD

bits... <<g>

Mulder watched. He liked watching. He loved

all the little things that she did, the way she

always nibbled on her lower lip, the way

she always played with her pen while she was

thinking, or else the crucifix which hung around

her neck.

He couldn't tell whether she noticed or not.

If she did, she didn't tell him to stop it.

She lifted her head, and he quickly glanced

down at the paper in front of him, smiling

to himself.

"I'm just going to grab myself some coffee"

she said as she rose, flexing muscles and

dropping her pen carelessly down on the desk.

"You want anything?"

He shook his head without even looking up -

it wasn't until he heard her turning and walking

away that he lifted his head to watch the

retreating figure.

She was so small, so slim, petite. Hard to

believe that this was the same woman who

could defend herself against attackers

twice her size, shoot coolly and without

hesitation, and doggedly follow every lead

possible when it could save a life.

She returned with a steaming mug, and

sat at her desk, legs crossed, eyes cast

down as she sipped the hot coffee.

She let out a small sigh of pleasure.

"Mmmm... this is good coffee."

Mulder glanced up at her with a smile.

Ever since they'd come back from Antartica,

the only thing he'd seen Scully drink was

hot coffee. Really hot coffee.

He hadn't seen her eat anything. But as

soon as she got to work she'd have coffee.

For lunch she'd have coffee. In the

afternoon she'd have coffee. And he was

pretty sure that as soon as she got home,

she'd have coffee.

He watched her sipping it, watched the

way her figure seemed to relax as she sipped,

watched a flush come into her pale cheeks.

"Watch out Scully, it looks like you're becoming

addicted to that stuff" he warned playfully.

Scully let out a small laugh, but then stopped

suddenly and bit her lip.

"It keeps me warm" she admitted, suddenly

sober. "I need to be warm."

"Ever since Ant-"

"I'm fine Mulder. Really. It's just a... a reaction."

She seemed to say it almost to convince herself

of the fact.

"Did you talk to the doctors about it?"

"Mulder, I'm sure they..."

She sighed. "No, I didn't."

"Why not?" Mulder persisted.

"Because I'm okay. I'm here, working with you,

aren't I?"

"This time, yes."

"What the hell do you mean '*this* time'?" she

demanded, thumping the mug down on the

desk beside her, where it spilled over some

handwritten case notes.

"Oh shit..." she mumbled in annoyance.

He watched her as she pulled open a desk

drawer and grab a handful of tissues, mopping

up the hot liquid.

"This time, Mulder? What does that mean?"

she asked again.

Mulder opened his mouth to say what was on

his mind, but then closed it again with a sigh,

lacking the courage to admit it to her.

"Nothing."

"Yeah, I'll bet."

"Scully..." he paused. "I think you should go

get yourself some more coffee."

Scully stared at him rigidly for a moment,

then she grabbed the coffee mug from behind

her on the desk and turned and left without

saying a word.

He didn't have the heart to watch her leave.
