doing now.

Watching his wife sleep beside him
Mulder was again surprised at how much he
loved this woman, how much he loved simply
being with her. He couldn't imagine life
now without her. There was no way he could
have endured everything he had the past few
years if she hadn't been a part of it. He
knew how needy and maudlin that sounded,
but it was true, a part of the truth that
was out there for him. He watched her, the
serene expression on her face as she slept
pleased that this evening she was not again
plagued but the nightmare that had haunted
her the past few weeks. As he watched her
he thought of her many expressions, the
expressions that he had "categorized and
easily referenced" over the years. The
expressions that communicated to him in
simple glances or a narrowing of her eyes
more than any of the many words she had
said or in many cases not said to him over
the years.
As he thought back on their time
together he thought of that look of
surprise she had on her face the first time
they were physically intimate. A few weeks
after the "Millennium" case and kiss they
took it to the next level. He thought she
had surprised herself, at her decision to
take their relationship to that level. He
thought that that was the first time that
Scully had really, really ever acted on
impulse with him and it not only surprised
him it did her as well. She came over to
his apartment that Saturday in preparation
for their next case. A case that would take
them all the way to sunny, Southern
California. A place that Scully was
particularly not fond and hated going back
to since that was where her daughter had
died. The last time they were there someone
tried to eat his brain and before that,
well, someone had forced him to drive
across country before their head exploded.
Not a happy place for Scully and she came
over to talk to him about it. As they were
talking, Mulder watched the many
expressions Scully's face underwent as she
talked with him and the various emotions
came to the forefront. From grief to
surprise in a matter of minutes. Sometime
in the middle of all that talking they
found themselves fumbling with clothing
that was soon in a pile next to his couch
and Scully had that surprised look on her
face. He smiled at the memory of it all.
It turned out that California wasn't
as bad as she had thought it would be, no
one tried to eat his brain and nobody's
head exploded, although someone's did fall
off, after they were dead of course, but
still. Before they returned home Mulder
found himself surprised by Scully at
something she was able to do, and no, it
wasn't anything like that it was just a
simple trick that she refused to explain to
him. He pestered her so much that she
finally kissed him just to shut him up and
as they broke apart he saw that look again,
that surprised look. A look that
communicated a ton of thoughts all at once
a combination of "Oh my God, did I just do
that?" mixed with "why didn't I do that
sooner?"
There was one look that Mulder never,
ever wanted to be on the receiving end
again. The look that screamed
disappointment, frustration and anger all
at once. He had seen it once and that was
more than enough for him. The morning he
told her of his plans to leave her, to
leave their son she said nothing just
looked at him in a way he had never seen
before. It wasn't hurt, it wasn't anger it
was much, much more. It was almost as
intense as the look she had when pursuing a
suspect but then, then it didn't have all
the emotional baggage that went with it. It
was just Scully doing her job, nothing
personal just what she had to do.
Remembering her looking at him like that
chilled him and he felt a small shiver make
its way up his spine. Granted, they
discussed it, or rather he talked and she
listened not really saying anything but
then she looked at him like that. He had
never seen him look at him like that before
and never wanted to see it again. So far he
hadn't but he was almost fearful that one
day that look would cross her face again
and he wouldn't be able to bear it.
As bad as that look was, there was
another that Mulder treasured more than any
other and that was the look of happiness
that crossed her face when she saw him. The
look that hid the small trace of a smile as
her lips began to curve upward slightly.
Not a full on Scully smile, mind you, but a
slight one that made it all the more
worthwhile the look that she saved just for
him, her eyes full of happiness just
because he walked into a room or knocked at
her door or simply existed. No one else had
ever looked at him like that before and he
relished it.
The other look that Mulder loved to
see cross Scully's face was the look she
gave him when she disagreed with him, not
just disagreed with him but was half a step
away from having him committed. The "you're
crazy, Mulder" was surprisingly one of his
favorite expressions. He loved the look she
had on her face right before she was ready
to counter any theory he had to offer. He
loved it because he knew what was coming
next, the challenge. The challenge that
would be sound, intelligent and so very
Scullylike. She wouldn't just argue with
him to hear herself do so, no not her, it
would be because in her Scullylike way she
knew that that's what kept him grounded. It
was what "saved him" as he said those many
years ago in that dingy hallway, before
that damned bee!
	After their physical relationship
began the expression he was most surprised
by was her "I want" expression, the look
she had on her face when she was almost,
but not quite on the brink. The small frown
that creased her forehead as her eyes
slightly closed waiting for and expecting
more from him. The first time he saw it on
her face, it took him out of the moment for
a second, surprised that Dana Katherine
Scully could have such an expression of
wanting, of desiring that was unlike
anything he had ever seen on her face
before. It was in that next second that she
really surprised him, leaning up to him and
whispering in his ear what he already knew
"I want" she said as she took his hand and
led it down to the area between where their
bodies were joined. He understood instantly
what she wanted and did his best to provide
it for her. It was next that another
expression crossed her face; the "I want"
look was replaced by a more intense look as
her eyes widened and her mouth formed a
small "O" as a very pleased sigh escaped
her mouth.
It was then that he noticed her
looking up at him and watching his facial
expressions. He wondered what he looked
like to her in that moment of pleasure and
then just before his eyes seemed to roll
back into his head he felt her move
slightly up towards him. He felt her hot
breath on his neck right before he heard
her whisper into his right ear "I love that
look".
