Nothing more, nothing less. Summary: Scully's having a loooong day and finds that Mulder aranges a little get together with her that she won't forget for a long long time... This story is dedicated to my best friend Eddie who was the inspiration for this story. Eddie, Shall We Dance? "Come Dance With Me" by: Mithrandir 7:45 p.m. So the day wasn't going so well for Ms. Dana Scully. She had fallen on the ice left by last week's snow storm getting into the car that morning, had a pile of paperwork to do, and then found out that Mulder was in trouble again for skipping out of work early that day with no explanation. Prabably on some new lead that was going to get the both of them into another mess. If it wasn't one thing it was another. Scully sighed as the day was ending and she was getting ready to go home for the night. Maybe she would run a nice hot bubble bath and read once she got home. Yes. That's exactly what she would be doing tonight she decided with a nod of her head. Scully left her desk to use the ladies room before she headed out, leaving her coat and briefcase there on the desk. As she passed the windows she saw that it was snowing again. Scully let out a breath and her shoulders slumped. It would be hell getting home tonight, she just knew it. xxxxxxxxxx 7:45 p.m. Mulder had been running around like a madman trying to get everything done by nightfall. With help from Frohike and Byers (langley was home sick with the flu) he had been able to make everything perfect. It would be wonderful. He knew it. They would be alone, and he was well, she was well, and there would be nothing stopping him. She wouldn't have a chance to walk out on him or blow him off as being sick or drugged or crazy. He was too set for this tonight.Byers was on his way to the FBI building right now to deliver the invatation. Everything would go as planned and she would see everything as clearly as he did. xxxxxxxxxx 7:56p.m. Scully walked slowley back to her desk dreading the drive home. She said goodnight to a few people on their way out and thought about what they were going home to. Wife, Husband....kids maybe even. Scully shook her head. What was she feeling sorry for herself about? Her life had been much more exciting than theirs had...hadn't it? Mulder had trekked his way through hell and back and she had been right there for the ride the whole way. For almost 6 years. It had been one hell of a ride, and she wouldn't trade her life with anyone's...well...maybe a few things that had happened in the past few years she could have done without, but she couldn't see herself not with Mulder by her side. As difficult as it had been sometimes to deal with Mulder or the hardships they had endured over the years, she was a stronger person for it, and cherished his friendship and love. She wanted to hear his ideas and wild theories sometimes just to make sure that he was there with her after the X-Files had been closed down. She craved a crazy investigation sometimes....desired it, and Mulder was always right there with his out-there leads. And it made her remember why she stayed with him. It was his passion for his work and the streangth to never give up no matter what the odds were or how high the stakes. After the whole incident in the Anarctic and the conffessions in the hallway and the memory of his lips just brushing over hers before she was stung by that damn bee. A bee of all things to ruien the most perfect moment...They both had been fighting hard to keep eachother at a far away enough distance to at least give the impression of partnerly proffessionalism. But she knew that they were both getting tired of it. It was too hard to pretend that they weren't fighting feelings and emotions and words that they had pent up inside that they needed to speak to eachother. And Scully was just waiting for the right moment. For something to happen that would make them both see it. For the walls to break down and for the light to shine on their dark lives. They could be happy if they would just let themselves. She was just waiting.... Scully was pulling on her coat and gathering her belongings off of her desk, more than ready to head home for the night, when she saw a white envelope sitting aganst her computer monitor. She set her briefcase down next to her feet and carefully picked up the curious object, turing it over a few times for inspection. There was nothing written on the outside to give any indiction it was for anyone but her. Scully opened up the encasing paper and pulled out a simple white and gold card with the word "invitation" on the front in gold lettering. Opening the card she recognised Mulder's handwritting: "Scully, please go to the Old mansion at the top of the hill in Endicott Park. There will be a light visable from the driveway. Please find your way there. I will be waiting." Scully smiled a little more. What was he up to now? Was this why he had left early from work that day? Up for the challenge, Scully walked hurridley out of the building and got into her car. Sitting on the passenger side seat was a large white box tied with a hunter green bow. Scully got a little shiver down her spine. This must have been very carefully planned. Opening the box, Scully uncovered the most beautiful cream colored gown. It was a simple design, with a straight long skirt that would reach her ankles and a scoop neck, sleevless with a low cut back. Under the dress were shoes to match. Scully shook her head. She couldn't wait to find out what Mulder was up to. xxxxxxxxxx 8:39p.m. Mulder paced around impatiently. Where WAS she? Had Byers gotten there with the card? Had she thought it was a joke and gone home? Was she just not coming? Mulder felt his heart sink for a whole five seconds until he heard her car pull up into the long driveway. He saw the headlights from the car and smiled. She had come. She would be here any second, and he couldn't wait to see her sweep in and look at him with thoes blue eyes of hers...It was too much to wait for. He looked over at the stereo in the ballroom he was standing in the middle of and shivered. He would be dancing with her in a few minutes. She would be in his arms and he would speak to her words that were long overdue. Words that he almost had spoken thoes months ago in the hall when he had been able to feel her lips just brush his for that split second...when he has confessed to her that she was his life. His Truth. His reason for searching. xxxxxxxxxx Scully pulled into the long driveway leading up to the beautiful old mansion on the hill of Endicott Park. The ballroom was usually rented out for parties and get-togethers, and although Scully had never seen it, she knew that it was going to be beautiful inside. She saw a light coming from the inside and knew it was Mulder. She was so excited. She had carefully put on her gown and shoes and fixed her hair before heading there that night. It wasn't much since she was going right from work, but it would have to do for the time she had been given to do it in. Scully parked the car and got out, pulling her coat around her against the snow and the cold night air. She walked up to the huge doors and found them already open a crack. She pushed them open and found the main hallway dimly lit with candles. Scully hung up her coat and made her way down the long corridors of the house trying to find where Mulder was. It was beautiful inside and she wished that she had more time to stop and look around, but she had a sly Fox to find. Then she saw it. The light coming out from under two huge doors at the end of a long hallway. She reached out and pushed the doors wide open to find Mulder, wearing a smart black tuxedo standing in the middle of an entirely candle-lit ballroom, music softly playing in the background. Her heart began to pound in her chest at the sight. She was breathless. xxxxxxxxxx Mulder looked up as the doors swung open. She had found him at last. And as she appeared he thought he was seeing things. This angel of a woman couldn't be his partner. She haden't really come and all of this was going to be in vain...until he looked into her blue eyes and saw the surprise and the love there all for him.. She was breathtaking standing there in the white gown he had so carefully picked out for her the week before. He half expected to see wings of silk on her back to put any doubt out of his mind that she was in fact an angel as he had always thought her to be. She didn't speak at all to him as she looked straight into his green eyes with wonder as if asking "is this all for me?" He heard the words to a song fill the room and he held out his arms to her. " Come...Dance with me." xxxxxxxxxx Scully was in total awe over this. Mulder had done this for her.All for her. And he had gone to all this trouble to make everything perfect...and he was asking her to dance with him as Sarah McLachlan's "Lost" played in the background. Still unable to say a word, Scully walked toward Mulder looking as handsome as ever in his tuxedo and was soon being held close as she was swept around the ballroom floor. She felt light and heady and she knew that this must be some kind of dream, b/c only in her dreams did Mulder ever do anything like this for her. She looked into his eyes and was enveloped by the warmth and love she saw there. Finally she got up enough nerve to break the surreal silence. " Is this all for me?" she asked timidly, and shivered when he nodded 'yes'. " It's all for you. This whole night is for you. I wanted it all to be perfect for you Scully. Do you like it," he asked sheepishly. " I love everything, Mulder. I can't believe you went and did this tonight. Everything is beautiful." " You look fabulous in that dress, Scully, did I mention that yet? I knew you would when I saw it in the window. I knew you had to be in this dress tonight." Scully felt herself blushing and looked down. " Thank you for all of this, Mulder. I don't know why you did it, but I can't tell you when I've had a more intriguing evening." Mulder laughed softly at her comment. " Intriguing, huh? Are you sure it's not plain old "Spooky?" Scully smiled at him and felt him hold her closer to him as they danced around the floor slowley. " Can I ask you why you did all this, Mulder? I am curious you know..." Mulder Smiled down at his partner of almost 6 years. their whole partnership flashed before his eyes. Eveything they had been through. Every word spoken. Every victory, and every loss. It all made him stronger as he gazed deeply into her eyes as blue as the sea. " I guess I wanted to spend this time alone with you tonight, Scully. So much has happened in the past few months alone that we hardley speak about to eachother. It's getting so hard to live knowing 'what could have been' or 'what would happpen if only this haden't gone wrong.' I know you feel it too. Why are we still playing these games, Scully? Why are we pushing at eachother so that there is an arms leangth between us all the time? What are we doing it for?" Scully closed her eyes. This was it. She took a deep breath and looked at him. " Mulder...after everything we've been through in the past few months...I'm surprised we haven't faced this issue sooner. I guess I was just waiting for a good time. I guess one never came." " What are we pushing away from eachother? That's exactly what they wanted us to do when they took us off of the X-Files, and we let them get what they wanted, Scully." " I think we do it trying to fool ourselves. Trying to keep just an ounce of professionalism in our realationship...for the general good of our carrer's I suppose." Mulder looked at her like she was bullshitting him. " I don't think it's helped much. Look at what happened outside of my apartment in the hallway. That's something I remember every day I wake up in the morning, Scully. I think to myself 'what would have happened if we haden't been interupted? What would it have been like to finish what we had started? After the whole Antarctic thing, I thought it better to put it out of my head...pretend like it was nothing and that I could blame it in the emotions running high that day, But I couldn't anymore, Scully and I wanted to bring it up to you so badley sometimes it was painfull. But I kept my mouth shut." " I wish I had known that, Mulder. I wish you had told me sooner." Mulder stopped moving her around the dancefloor, and they stood still, staring at eachother in the middle of the candle-lit ballroom. " Scully...I don't want us to have to worry about 'what if's' anymore. They took you away from me a while back and they thought that I would give up on you. That that would be the end of us for good. But I had to get you back, Scully. I can't go on if you're not there with me. I can't imagine you not being with me today or tomorrow or ever. That's why they tried to get rid of you. Because you helped me keep searching. You gave me the streangth to keep going even after everything that has happened to us along the way. They knew that if you were gone, I had nothing so they took you from me, and they thought they had you, but, damn it Scully, I got you back. I couldn't let you be taken away like that. You had no reason to die like that. I couldn't let them do that to you. You're better than this, Scully, and I am so thankful that you are here with me now." Scully looked up at him, speechless. She couldn't remember the last time he had been so open and honest with her. There was nothing about what he had said to her that she could doubt, nothing she could think he was lying about because in his eyes was just raw emotion, displayed for her only. It was a scary sight seeing her partner like this. Having him tell her all of what was in his heart. Scully reached up and touched his face. " I'm tired of pretending that nothing happened too, Mulder." " You are....?" " I'm tired of it all." " You are....?" " Sometimes I think about what almost happened between us, Mulder and I can't imagine how much better off we'd be right now. I know I've maybe appeared cold in the past few months, but I was trying to keep all of that out of my mind. But everytime I look at you...I keep thinking...'what would have happened that night if the bee haden't....stung me?' I know that maybe it isn't right, and maybe none of it ever was, but I can't help wishing for that time back....if only to tell you what I was feeling that night like you did. I know we would have been better off than we are now." Scully finished softly and looked up at him carefuly. He was just looking at her. No words. No crying this time. Just a kiss. Mulder leaned down to capture her mouth for their first real kiss, and Scully felt herself go numb. It was finaly going to happen. As Mulder's lips brushed tentativley aginst Scully's he thought about how perfect this was. How perfect it would have been thoes months ago in the hallway. She leaned up to kiss him back, and he felt her wrap her arms around his neck pulling him in deeper. It was wondeful. They explored eachother's mouth's with their tongues and sighed and shivered against eachother. It was so unreal. It was like a dream that they had both been having each night that finaly came true. As They pulled away from one another, both were breathless and smiling. " So that's what would have happened..." Mulder said softly as he pulled her closer still against him. Scully chuckled softly. " I think that about covers it, yes." " What's going to happen now?" Mulder asked quietly. " You planned tonight, Mulder. You tell me." Scully answered with a smile, letting him know that whatever he said was going to be accepted. Mulder got this look on his face. " What's wrong, Mulder?" Scully asked worried. He looked upset. Mulder shook his head. " I'm just so relieved that you came tonight. I saw you come into the room when you first got here and I was amazed that you came at all...now....now after everything...I'm still in a bit of awe here, Scully. You'll have to excuse me if I babble or stare at you. Everything has just been perfect tonight." Scully reached out for him and stood on her toes to give him a kiss. " Of course I came tonight. I will always be there if you ask or if you need me you know that, Mulder. So....what do you want to do now?" Mulder kissed her lips lightly and thought about it for a minute. " Well....we do have this place until noon tomorrow...it's empty except for the two of us...we could go...explore the upstairs," he said with a smile that told her that exploring would be that last thing they would be doing upstairs. Scully nodded and smiled back. " I think that would be wonderful, Mulder. Let's do that." Mulder nodded. " Scully...Dana...I love you, you know that, right?" She nodded and got this wonderful smile on her face. " I know you do, Mulder. I love you too. But I think you knew that already." Mulder nodded. " I knew." " That's what I thought. So, Mulder....when are we going to explore the house?" " In a minute. First, come dance with me again?" And she did. xxxxxxxxxx Yea, I know it was long and corney, but I couldn't help it. I haven't written a long corney story in a while feedback always appreciated, though I never get any, so I don't know why I put that down here all the time.... Scullystar@hotmail.com
