Coming Home

=E2=80=9CI won=E2=80=99t be coming home.=E2=80=9D The line kept ringing in
his ear. =E2=80=9CWon=E2=80=99t be coming home.=E2=80=9D

=E2=80=9CDon=E2=80=99t do this.=E2=80=9D He=E2=80=99d handled it, he=E2=80
=99d kept moving. He=E2=80=99d even walked out to continue an investigatio
n she had dumped in his lap. He=E2=80=99d shoved it aside and kept moving,=
concentrating on his investigation. Allow that investigation to keep him
sane in the face of those words even knowing it was the investigation that
had caused them.

But the words wouldn=E2=80=99t leave. The icy core of his body fed on thos
e words over and over. Home. It was what he had created with her after a
long lonely life. They weren=E2=80=99t
=E2=80=98married=E2=80=99 in the traditional sense, but he was married to h
er, committed to her. =E2=80=9CI won=E2=80=99t be coming home.=E2=80=9D

Did she even understand what those words meant to him, even after all this
time, all the things they had created between them. How could she consider
 not =E2=80=98coming home=E2=80=99?

Where had he found the strength to walk out of that locker room, leaving he
r behind? He=E2=80=99d never really left her behind, he couldn=E2=80=99t,
but did she know that, understand that? Did she know that they were togeth
er regardless? It wasn=E2=80=99t even really a choice any more. It just w
as. She was his, his life, his reality.

Hadn=E2=80=99t that shown when they continued to =E2=80=98run into=E2=80=99
each other? He automatically turned to her even when he didn=E2=80=99t me
an to. And it seemed the same with her. They had been all there was for e
ach other after they had run. The two of them against the world. Okay, th
at had been tense as well, apart for nearly a year, then together 24/7 but
he=E2=80=99d missed her so much that he had relished the closeness. Their
expectations weren=E2=80=99t the same there. He had thought he was coming
home to a family, to help her raise their son. She had known that wasn=E2
=80=99t going to be and feared his reaction, but it was true closeness, tog
ether in every way finally. Her body melding to his, joining with him as i
t always should have been.

No, that wasn=E2=80=99t true. In the beginning he wouldn=E2=80=99t have ap
preciated her and she would probably have run screaming from him if she had
known what he had begun to feel for her. He wanted to think he had earned
his place in her life. If he were honest he=E2=80=99d have to admit that
it was more likely that he had earned her scorn, but that hadn=E2=80=99t be
en true. She had given up her entire life, her job, her family to be with
him. It had been, well, unbelievable. She had come with him.

How could she think she could leave him now?

He=E2=80=99d been hurt by her words. He could admit that. Did she feel th
at she could just walk away? Did she honestly think they were able to walk
 away from each other now?

He lay there unable to sleep.

=E2=80=9CMulder?=E2=80=9D

=E2=80=9CYeah?=E2=80=9D

=E2=80=9CI=E2=80=99m sorry and I=E2=80=99m here. Mulder, I=E2=80=99ll alwa
ys be here.=E2=80=9D Her arms went around him and his enfolded her.

=E2=80=9CI know.=E2=80=9D And I hope that=E2=80=99s enough, he held her cl
ose.
