Beta by FoxfireX ~ A Companion Piece to Little White Lies ~ Dana Scully grabs William out of the car seat while Mulder is tossing the diaper bag over his shoulder. "Come on Mulder, you've put this off for too long, you know we need to get William a new pair of shoes." Mulder slams the car door. "I know Scully, but on a busy Saturday at the mall?" Scully lifts Will higher in her arms and pulls his hood down over his head. "I offered to go last Tuesday night but as I recall you got an urgent message from the Gunmen." Mulder places his hand on the small of Scully's back. "Scully, they only had that uncut version of your First Person Shooter video for one night." Scully shoots him an emasculating stare. "Be that as it may, your son is pushing out the toes of his shoes." Mulder pulls open the front door of the mall. "Okay, okay, I got the guilt message loud and clear." They walk into the mall and head for the Pus'n Boots kids' shoe store. Thirty minutes later Will has been fitted with a new pair of leather shoes and both he and Mulder are each chewing on complimentary suckers. "Mulder I could use some caffeine and Will would appreciate a cookie and a carton of milk." "Sounds good to me," Mulder says leading them to Cookie Junction. Scully takes Will and sits down beside a large potted plant across from the cookie stand. Mulder takes his place in the long line. A young woman clad in blue jeans and a soft pink sweater sits down next to Scully. She flips her long dark hair over her shoulder and cracks her gum. She runs her deep red polished nails over her jeans. Scully sets Will down on his feet and steadies him. He toddles around in his new white baby shoes with the tiny bells on them. "Cute kid," the gum cracker says. "Thanks," Scully replies as she grins down at the baby. "What's his name?" "William." "Hi William." The woman wiggles her fingers at the baby. "He's not saying much yet," Scully says as she straightens his hair. "Oh the strong silent type, huh." Scully picks up Will to adjust his shoes. "I hope you wear these a little longer than the other pair." "So you came to the mall for shoes?" "Yes. I hate shopping on a busy Saturday," Scully says giving William her car keys to jingle. "It's my favorite time," the woman says. "Really?" "Yeah. I come here to watch the people. Well, actually the men," the woman laughs. Scully looks up from Will. "The men?" "Sure. I mean I'm single, I'm not into the bar scene and all my gal pals are married so I come here to enjoy the scenery." Scully smiles at the woman and pulls her keys from Will's mouth. "Do you ever spot anything interesting?" The woman perks up at Scully's interest. "Yes, in fact I see one now. Look over there in line at Cookie Junction. Stud at twelve o'clock. Scully looks up from Will but doesn't see anyone she would vaguely call a stud except Mulder. Oh, Mulder! "Tall guy, chestnut brown hair, great caboose." "Oh yeah, I see him." "He has that needy look. Those sad bedroom eyes and that full pouty bottom lip that you just wanna bite." Scully smiles, "I'd have to agree with you on that." The woman nods her head. "He's definitely my find of the day, maybe of the month." She points to Mulder, "Long legs, he's in good shape. Must be a runner. Broad shoulders; trim waist. Doesn't sit oh his duff all day." Scully sighs, "I'm sure he doesn't." The woman nudges Scully. "See that chick in line behind him, she's checking him out but good." Scully's head shoots up and she furrows her brow. The woman cracks her gum. "He's oblivious to the fact that he is a gorgeous hunk of the male species. He's just going about his business. I like that kind of guy, self-assured but not stuck on himself." Scully picks up Will. "Yes, it does seem that way." The woman taps Scully with the back of her hand. "Oh look, he's a gentleman too. He let that little old lady cut in front of him." "I can see that." "He dresses casual but I'll bet he wears a suit during the day." "What makes you say that?" "He's too confident but not in a gloating kind of way. He's too smart not to be a professional." Scully lets a small smile cross her face. "Maybe he's a cop or FBI." "No," the woman says still staring at Mulder, "he's definitely a doctor. I know one thing if he's a gynecologist he's a very wealthy man." "And busy too," Scully adds. The woman looks at Scully with a grin. "See you're getting the hang of it." Then she points to Mulder. "Oh look when he puts both hands behind his head his shirt rides up. You can see his taut back. Stop it! I think I'm getting a case of the vapors." The woman fans her face. Scully eyes Mulder and grins. I'm guessing he must be 35 to 40 years old." "Forty-one," Scully pipes up. The woman looks at her with a funny look on her face. "I guess," Scully adds. "He's well preserved. Nice head of hair; the kind you want to run your fingers through." "Um hum," is all Scully can say remembering the many times she has done that very thing. "Oh look, he's taking his wallet out of his hip pocket. He moves like a cat in the jungle. Damn!" Scully looks up from Will. "What?" The woman sighs and slumps her shoulders. "He's wearing a wedding band." "Yes he is." Just then Mulder turns and smiles at Scully. "Oh geeze, would you look at that face! Now that's a face I could wake up with!" "Me too." Scully puts Will down and he toddles off toward Mulder. "Hey! Your baby is getting away!" "He's going to see his father." The woman swallows her gum. "His father? Oh shit! I'm really sorry." Scully laughs, "I'm not. Its okay, Mulder gets lots of stares. I'm used to it." Mulder bends down to scoop Will up in his arms. He kisses his cheek and softly talks to the child. He grabs his tray with the coffee and cookies on it, thanking the clerk he turns to find a table. The woman squirms on the bench. "Look I'm really sorry. I didn't mean. . ." Scully smiles at the poor woman. "No, no really it's okay. You've helped remind me of what I have." The woman turns pale. "He really does work for the FBI, doesn't he." Scully simply nods her head. The woman's eyes grow large. "He can't arrest me can he? I mean I was just looking." "No he can't and I'm sure he would find your observations very flattering." Scully stands up and grabs the diaper bag. "Besides everything you said was true." "Well I'd better, ah, be moving along." She nods toward Mulder. "I think your husband is waiting for you." Scully turns her head and gazes at Mulder, who is getting Will settled into a high chair. A contented smile crosses her face. "Yes he is." "Well nice to meet you," the woman says as she backs away from Scully. "You too." Scully walks over to where Mulder is breaking up a cookie for William. He looks up at her. "Who was that you were talking to?" "Oh just a woman," Scully says standing close to Mulder and rubbing the back of his neck. "It was an awfully animated conversation you having." Scully leans in to whisper in his ear, "Let's just say I agreed whole-heartedly with everything she said." ~ The End ~
