Summary: Frohike isn't the only one admitting Scully is *hot* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Scully's First Day Back At Work, post shooting * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Drumming her fingers on the chair beside her, Scully waited for Kersch to call her into the office. Typical he calls her up here then keeps her waiting. And she didn't even have Mulder to deflect attention on to. Finally, the blonde secretary lifted her head long enough to inform Scully she could enter. Passing the ignorant woman, Scully had a feeling of jealousy she couldn't quite explain. Containing the urge to slap her 'colleague', she knocked before entering the inner sanctum. Skinner's office was much nicer, she thought while approaching the desk. Lighter, with a better layout. Mind you, there were more pressing reasons to request being assigned back to his supervision. Like the X- Files, before Mulder drove her insane with covert investigations of National Enquirer stories. At least he hadn't mentioned it while she had been in hospital. "Take a seat Agent Scully. How are you feeling?" A total lack of expression in that monotone, nowhere near as sexy as Mulder's. This was not going to be pleasant. Time to get chewed out for endangering herself and others, being irresponsible, yadda yadda yadda. Finally, she realised how Mulder must have felt all the times he was in the hot seat. Scully wished she could go back to her scientific observer role, and not be taking the blame. Mulder was so much better at it - any excuse to play the martyr. And excuse for her to comfort him, she thought with an inward smile. But for now, she had to play the part of a scolded schoolgirl, apologise profusely and promise not to let it happen again. "I'm fine, Sir. Glad to be back at work, even if it isn't the X-Files" Especially to see Mulder, she almost giggled, but caught herself in time. She wondered if anyone knew how overly girlish she was under that icy veneer she had spent years perfecting. Kersch obviously didn't. "I've read your report. May I ask if Agent Mulder was involved in any way? It seems like his angle." "No sir, Agent Mulder remained in DC. Those are my own findings." "Well, I think you know what I'm going to say. How could you be so foolish as to act alone? You might think yourself invincible Agent Scully, but as a woman alone, the streets aren't safe for you. That's why you were assigned a partner. What were you thinking, going to the house of a murder suspect alone? And leaving yourself exposed to gunfire like that? It's stupid, Scully, and I expected better from you." "Yes, sir. I understand that." Kersch removed his glasses slowly. Letting out a shaky breath, he avoided Scully's bemused stare. He rubbed the bridge of his nose, as if wrestling with some inner turmoil. Endless moments elapsed before he broke the silence. "You could have been killed, Dana. Dead. Don't you see? It can't continue." "Sir? It's, it's a dangerous job. I took a chance, and I paid for it. I've learned my lesson." "Dana, do you have any idea how much we think of you here. We can't save you from Agent Mulder's follies, but we would very much like to keep you alive" "Sir?" Her tone was more than incredulous now. "Your humility is endearing Dana. You honestly don't see all the men who are in love with you, who worship you. The men who'd be devastated if any further ills were to befall you." "Sir, I'm not sure.." "Please, call me Alvin. This is not official FBI business. If you haven't surmised yourself, Dana, I have feelings for you. I'm not so optimistic as to think those emotions would be reciprocated, but I think you ought to know. If I'm harsh on you, it's because I want the best for you. I'm not the only one, Skinner's another one of the many." "Sir, Alvin, I.." "Tell me Dana, do you think I would ever stand a chance? Would any of us.." Her expression was somewhere between shock and disbelief. "That's personal, sir. I don't want to be drawn on that." Alvin Kersch let out a sigh. His acceptance of the facts was apparent, but as was human nature, he hoped that outright questioning might gain the answer he sought, against the odds. "I know why, Dana. I just hoped you might deny it here. You're already in love, and while I might be less eccentric, I'll never be him, will I?" "Sir, I just won't be.." "Agent Mulder is a lucky man..." A new emotion traversed Scully's features - close to anger. Her jaw set in defiance, her eyes boring into me. She opened her mouth to speak in her defence, but he wouldn't wait to hear it. "Don't deny it," his voice was now a hoarse whisper. "Your body language says it all, you're ready to defend him. I'm not about to dismiss you for being in love. It's all too rare to see such devotion. If you could see how your eyes light up just at the mention of his name.. "His heart is in the right place - he's very defensive of you, you should have seen him while you were away. But I won't let him wreck your career, Dana, so keep a rein on him. I promise you, I won't let anything else go wrong, not if I can help it." "May I go now, sir?" Her voice was tremulous, almost fearful. "Yes, Agent Scully. This briefing is over." She left, leaving Kersch to his thoughts. He thought himself an idiot to ever imagine she would accept his love. Not when she neither needed nor wanted it. There would be other women in his life, but none so breathtaking, so intriguing as Special Agent Dana Scully. Scully made her way to the dingy basement, her heart pounding in her ears. What the hell was that? Perhaps best to disregard for the moment. She walked in to find Mulder staring at her badge, a fact he hastily tried to disguise, pretending to take a note of her badge number on a scrap of paper. Scully stood watching him, until his curiosity forced him to speak. "Hey, Scully. Did he try to shoot you, ya know, bump up your total?" "Mulder, do you love me?" He almost fell off his chair in fright. "Wha..love..what did you just say?" "It's a simple enough question.." "Well, i..of course..it's more" His stuttering was silenced by her lips on his. For a moment, he couldn't remember his name, never mind what he had been trying to say. As she broke away with a satisfied smirk, her look sought confirmation of her request. "Scully, of course I love you. I thought you'd never ask. But what brought this.. "Shut up and kiss me Mulder, or I won't invite you over tonight." Instead of senseless argument, Mulder found it better to keep her happy. She'd tell him when the time was right. But for now, he'd turn ET himself away, just to be sitting here kissing Dana Scully. His Dana Scully.
