"Victoria, it's Dana. Did we do the right thing?" "I believe so, although what I am currently uncertain of is whether Mulder will stay out of either trouble or danger." "What do you mean?" "From what I recall, the man attracts trouble like a moth to a flame. Or metal shavings to a magnet. Or worse, an object falling into the gravitation field surrounding a black hole." "I think that would be applicable to both him and me." "Yes, but correct me if I'm mistaken in the belief that you have different priorities now." "I do. And William is a big part of that." "And how much does little William resemble his father?" "A great deal." *sigh* "He just left, and I miss him already." "I know you do. If it is any consolation, if it wasn't for the fact that he knew his life was in greater danger than yours and William's, he would not have gone." "This entire thing is just so senseless. Why would Mulder's life even be in danger?" "Dana, you know as well as I do that you already know the answer to that question. It is more a matter of his knowing too much in the first place. The work you and he have done in the last decade or so has profound implications-" "But I TOLD him to leave! I didn't WANT him to go." "So what exactly did your Deputy Director say to convince Mulder to leave?" "Are you spying on us? And what do you know that you haven't mentioned? I never mentioned Kersh." "Dana, I have yet to be in touch with Mulder. The last time I was in touch with him was before William was born. And all I know of your Deputy Director is the impressions I have gotten from you and Mulder, as well as some strange thoughts crossing my mind." "I don't know if I believe that." "I don't know what else to tell you. Except that I'm not spying on either of you." "And my instincts tell me to trust you. Even after this latest incident." "But it is Kersh, is it not?" *resigned sigh* "It is." "And he said that Mulder's life would be better served in trying to find the people behind his abduction and yours as well." "That's almost word for word." "And he also gave Mulder a starting place? Which has origins somewhere in New Mexico." "How do I know I didn't let him leave into a trap? I've always been so good at watching his back and covering him." "But he doesn't work for the Bureau anymore. At least not officially." "I was there when Kersh kicked him out." "And that's another thing. Kersh called him 'Agent' this morning when he was there to talk to him, but as far as you know, Mulder has not been reinstated." "Victoria?" "Yes?" "Has Mulder ever mentioned it is creepy, not to mention spooky, when you do that?" "Actually, yes, he has. Ought I apologise?" "No. I just wanted to let you know that it's on the unnerving side." "That's all right. I knew it would be. But I thought I should let you know what I know. As for what Mulder tends to do when I do that, he tends to ask me how I know what I have just told him." "And what do you tell him?" "I just know. I don't know how I know, but I do." "Does he accept that answer?" "Dana, this is Mulder. What do you think?" *snort* "You have a point there. What does he typically end up saying after you've said that?" "He tells me that it's unacceptable. And I continue by telling him I honestly don't know how I end with the information I do. And that he still cannot write up a file on me." *laughter* "How many times has he asked?" "More often than not. And I always tell him that in order to do an X-File on me, he would have to do one on himself." "I'll bet that never goes over well." "No. He hates that idea." "I don't wonder why." *distant sound of baby crying* "Victoria, I need to go. William's awake and he needs me." "That's fine. Take care of him, and yourself. Mulder will be back before you know it." "I will. Thank you." "Good night, Dana. Give little William a kiss for me please." "I will. I promise. Good night, Victoria." *click* -End Author's Note: Yes, this is a result of writer's block, real life, and letting ideas wander around in my brain for the better part of a year. I know X-Files is now off the air, and that most people said that it was a dying show anyway, but am I the only one that misses anticipating the next new episode in November? I mean, am I the only one who missing having the weekly "friends" drop by and giving them nearly undivided attention?
