Title: The Dance
Author: Fiona Fitzgerald
Rating: NC-17
Disclaimer: I don't own these characters, I don't intend
to make profit, but every once in a while Mulder and Scully
invade my dreams

XxX

And as they part from the hug, the dance begins..

Scully is the first to let go of contact, but holds on to
Mulder with her eyes. He wants to say something?anything?to
break this cacophonous silence that has drawn out between
them. But he knows, by the way Scully's mouth is slightly
parted, the way her breathing has faintly increased, by
*that* look, she wants to say something. She takes a deep
breath, lungs filling with air and courage; she opens her
mouth to speak.

But all too quickly, it vanishes. Scully closes her lips
and slumps her shoulders, defeated. She looks at the
ground, as if the rug holds all of the answers to life's
mysteries. When she finally looks back up at Mulder, her
shoulders straighten, her chin is held high, and her fists
are clenched. He would almost believe that she is back to
normal.

But her eyes give her away. They glisten with moisture, as
if her irises have somehow captured the color and movement
of the ocean. They hold the same look as when she was
standing in his apartment entryway years ago; when she was
telling him she was leaving, running away from him.

As if Scully knows that her eyes have betrayed her, she
shifts her gaze downward. She whispers to him; thanks him
for his support, but asks to be alone and vanishes into her
hallway. Mulder knows this dance all too well, and as a
veteran in this fine art, he chases her down the hall into
her bedroom. As he approaches, he sees her facing the bed,
her back to him.

"Scully."

She knows if she turns around, it will be her downfall.
She wants so badly to ask him to stay. But in doing so, she
would be a coward. She cannot admit that not only does she
want him to stay, but she needs him to. Anger starts to
slowly seep in to her psyche. She knows this; when emotions
get in the way of her rationale, she resorts to resentment.

She prepares for another battle, just like the one in his
hallway. It is deja vu all over again. She whips around to
face Mulder, and she looks straight into..

..her eyes. There is no denying it --he now knows what she
wants, what she needs. Before she can even begin her
argument, he tells her to stop; to stop thinking so damn
much and for once to just feel. He wants her to let him in,
to share her pain.

She only stands her ground, refusing to move or speak.

Mulder takes a step back, telling Scully that yes this is
her battle, and if she truly, honestly wants to be alone,
he will leave. He turns around, prepared to make the worst
mistake of his life. But before he can exit the bedroom, he
hears a soft plea.

"Stay with me tonight."

He rotates on his heel, and slowly but determinately makes
his way over towards Scully. Her breathing is soft and
shallow. She can feel her pulse rate increase, and muses
that her cortical levels are rising, probably from the
response of the sympathetic nervous system. Fight or flight-
-she chooses to fight.

Mulder slowly leans into her personal space and whispers a
gossamer promise in her ear. He turns around so she can
change into her pajamas in modesty, and he tries to think
of anything besides a half naked Scully a mere four feet
from him. His eyes wander over the pictures on her dresser
like a lover exploring the body of his partner, making note
of each new item that has never been viewed before. He
focuses on a particular picture of the two of them, taken
on a case years ago. How different they were back then.

"It's amazing how much we have changed, isn't it?" Scully
says, sitting upright in her bed, mirroring his thoughts.
Indeed, Mulder thinks. He strips of his outer clothing
leaving only his undershirt and boxers. He crawls into her
inviting bed and faces Scully, yet refrains from touching
her.

"Thank you.. for staying with me tonight." Mulder simply
nods. And like an epiphany, Scully recognizes the look on
Mulder's face - nervousness and trepidation. Scully
clutches his hand and places it over her heart so that he
too can feel how fast her heart is racing, and Mulder
lightly fans his fingers tickling her breast
unintentionally.

"Cold?" he asks after feeling Scully shutter.

"Yes" she lies.

Mulder wraps his arms around her torso and tenderly kisses
her forehead. "Maybe there's hope" he murmurs into her
hair. As Scully nuzzles his face with her cheek, Mulder
miscalculates the proximity of her lips to his and gently,
yet by a fluke, kisses Scully on her mouth.

"Sorry" he mumbles.

After an awkward silence, Scully says softly "Try again.
We can do better than that; plus the kiss we shared on New
Years was much.."

She does not even finish her sentence. Mulder silences her
courageous yet apprehensive speech by giving her exactly
what she wanted. After promising himself that he was going
to take his sweet time if he ever was allowed to touch
Scully in a more-than-friendly manner, he quickly discards
her pajama top. Her breasts radiate like headlights in the
darkness of her bedroom, and Mulder adorns the classic
"deer-caught-in-said-headlights" look on his face from the
beauty of her secondary sexual organs.

Without wasting another second, Mulder rids of both his
and Scully's remaining clothing. As he is pulling down her
pajama bottoms, he feels that the truth he has been
searching for is about to be revealed. Like hydrogen
bonding with oxygen, he feels a powerful bond that draws
his attention to the juncture between her legs.

Mulder stares at Scully's burning bush, as if God himself
is speaking directly to him -- telling him to take this
woman and make love to her.

Mulder cries at the beauty that is Scully. He cannot
believe nor comprehend the magnificence that is placed
before him. "Make love to me," she asks. And for the first
time in their lives, he cannot argue with her. In one earth-
shattering thrust, the love Mulder bestows not only
penetrates her mind, but also her body.

The End
