The Dance
Diana Fowley

It had been a long, gruesome case. They were both
exhausted. Scully tried to concentrate on the passing
desert scenery in hopes distracting herself; in hopes
that she would be able to rid her mind of the
disturbing images of the last few weeks.. Beside her,
Mulder was gently tapping the steering wheel to the
beat of the music. Neither spoke, both too caught up
in trying to forget. After a few hours of silence
Scully finally spoke, "Mulder, there's a diner up
ahead, let's pull over, I'm starving."

"Think you can eat?"

Scully smiled, "I think I'm ready to try. How about
you?"

"How long have you known me, Scully? Have I ever
turned down food? You're buying, right?"

Scully laughed, happy at his attempt to lighten the
mood, "Sure, Mulder, I'm buying."

They entered the diner in a far better mood then they
had been in the car.

The diner was deserted when they entered so they
choose the first booth they came to. Once they were
seated and had ordered, they tried to keep their
conversation light, but the terrible images of this
case still plagued them both. Finally Mulder spoke,
"Do you want to talk about it?"

Scully shook her had 'no' and continued to push a few
remaining fries around her plate. "I'm fine, I
just....I just need some time. I just need some time
to get those children out of my mind."

Scully shuttered and Mulder reached across the table
and placed his hand on hers, "I can see, Scully, that
this case is really bothering you. If there is
anything I can do...."

"Thanks Mulder," Scully said with a tight smile.

"I'm good at distraction," he said in a teasing tone.

Scully smiled, "After seven years together, Mulder, I
know how good you are at distraction."

"Well, then I guess I'm just what the doctor ordered,"
he said with a gleam in his eye.

Scully's eyebrows shot to the sky wondering what he
was up to. Before she could protest he was out of his
chair and pulling her to her feet. "Hey Scully," he
said. "Wanna dance?"

She leaned toward him and said, "Mulder, there's no
music."

He laughed and pulled her into his arms, tucking her
head under his chin. Then, into her hair, he
whispered, "Doesn't matter," and he started humming.

Scully relaxed into Mulder's embrace and they started
to dance. Mulder continued to hum and guide Scully
across the floor of the deserted diner. Before long,
Scully had to admit that Mulder was right. He was a
wonderful distraction and exactly what the had doctor
ordered.. While in his strong arms, Scully forgot l
about her awful experiences of the past couple of
days. She was content to stay in his arms as long as
he was willing to hold her.

Mulder would have loved to dance with Scully for the
rest of the night, for the rest of his life, but he
unfortunately had to stop.

"Mulder," Scully asked, her voice muffled in his
chest. "Why'd you stop?"

Mulder have Scully a squeeze and smoothed her hair
with his hand. "I ran out of music."

She giggled into his chest then pulled away. "You
were right, Mulder. You're a wonderful distraction."

He smiled and cupped her face, "Believe me, Scully. I
enjoyed every minute of it."

"Thank you, Mulder," Scully said and stood on her toes
and placed a gentle kiss on Mulder's cheek.

When she tired to pull back, Mulder caught her face in
his hands. "Scully," he said and leaned forward and
place an equally gentle kiss on her lips. Then
another, and another. The gentle kisses soon grew in
passion. Years of tension were released with the touch
of their lips. Scully moaned when Mulder's tongue
slipped into her mouth and along the smooth surface of
her teeth.. Mulder growled deep in his throat as
Scully pulled his hard body against her. After a few
minutes, Scully grabbed Mulder's shoulder's and pushed
him away.

"Mulder," she gasped. "Mulder," Scully repeated. "We
shouldn't have done that."

"Scully, I'm sorry. I don't know what got into me. I
mean it was nice but..."

"This is not the right time..."

Mulder smiled and nodded. Scully grabbed his hand and
pulled to the car.

In the car Scully couldn't get the kiss out of her
head. She tried to concentrate on the passing desert
scenery in hopes distracting herself; in hopes that
she would forget the wonderful feeling of Mulder's
lips on hers, or his strong arms around her, holding
her, protecting her, comforting her. Beside her,
Mulder was gently tapping the steering wheel to the
beat of the music. Neither spoke, both too caught up
in trying to forget the kiss they had just shared. .

In the months that followed, they worked together side
by side. Neither mentioned the kiss or the incident
in the diner. Then, after another terribly emotional
case, Mulder returned to the office to find Scully
leaning over is his desk, her knuckles white from her
grip on the edge. She was crying.

Mulder slowly approached her from behind. He stood
close enough that she could feel the heat from his
body, but far enough away that his wasn't touching
her. He slowly slid his arm from her hip around to
her stomach. He spread his fingers and then gently
pulled her back against him. She released her grip on
the desk and fell against his strong chest.

"Do you wanna dance?" Mulder whispered, his lips
brushing her hair.

 "No," she quickly replied.

"You sure?"

"Yes," she said with a nod.

"All you have to do is turn around," he stated as he
pulled her tighter against him.

Scully closed her eyes and brought her hand up and
placed it over the had that was resting on her
stomach, their fingers intertwined. "I'm sure," she
said and gave his hand a squeeze.

He sighed in disappointment and brushed a kiss across
her hair before he took a step back, distancing
himself from her. "I have to go," he said as he
turned to leave.

She could hear his familiar footsteps heading away
from her. "Mulder," she said when she knew he was at
the door. She turned to find he had stopped with his
hand on the doorknob, but was still facing the door.
"Mulder," she said again and he turned to face her.
"Never stop asking."

His eyes locked with her and a slow smiled spread
across his face.

The end (for now)

Author's Notes: Does anyone actually read these? I
do but I think I must be the only one. I actually was
cleaning out my computer and came across this story so
I figured I would post it. I hope you all like it. I
am not opposed to writing a sequel so if you really
like it let me know and I may continue it.
