A Dancing Romance
by: Sveta B'Nathla

J. Edgar Hoover Building
Basement Level
August 27, 1996, 4:45

Dana Scully sat hunched over her desk, staring at paperwork, as she had
been for the last 2 hours. She looked up at the clock-4:45. Only a few more
minutes. Or maybe I can just leave now. Mulder's voice jerked her from her
thoughts.
"Hey Scully, feel like doing something tonight?"
	"Like what?"
	"It's a surprise."
"This isn't anything *paranormal* is it?"
	"No."
Scully's eyebrows shot up and considered it for a moment. This definitely
wasn't something to pass up. "Hmm...when should I come by?"
Mulder's face lit up with that little-boy smile. "6:30 is fine. Where
something loose and comfortable."
Scully wondered what was going on, but she didn't ask. 'I'll just let him
have his fun,' she thought. "See you then." She grabbed her trenchcoat and
walked out of the basement.
'She's going to love this,' Mulder thought, a sly grin on his face.

Scully's apartment, 5:50

What to wear, what to wear. 'Something loose and comfortable,' the words
echoed in her ear. Why was she having such a hard time with this? As she
waded through the crowded closet a little voice said, 'Maybe it's because
you're in love with him, Dana.' Oh shut up! she screamed at the little
voice. 'You've controlled yourself this long. You don't even know if he
feels the same way.' (Don't I own anything besides business suits?) She
let out an exasperated sigh and finally decided on a relaxed pair of dark
blue pants and a soft flower patterned v-neck tee. She looked in the mirror
and combed her fiery red hair. 'You're not going to look any better, no
matter what you do.' She took a deep breath and walked out towards her
car.

Mulder's apartment 6:25

Mulder paced back and forth in his apartment. 'Why did you invite her? Now
you're really going to have a hard time keeping your feelings in.' Great
just great. He would have to be on his best behavior in order not to let
something slip. More pacing. More thinking.

A knock at the door. It was her.

"Scully, you're beautiful." He couldn't help it. Her radiant red hair and
soulful green eyes were breathtaking. He yelled at himself and envisioned
the line he was coming dangerously close to crossing. His toe touched the
thin border.
Scully lowered her head, attempting to hide her blushing cheeks. "Thanks."
"Let's go." Putting his hand on the small of her back, he guided her
towards the steps down to the car.
	"So...where are we going?"
"Dancing. Specifically, folk dancing. I've been going every week for a few
months now. Does wonders for the psyche."
Scully pondered his words for an instant. Dancing, hm? I like to dance.
And something tells me Mulder is a good dancing partner. She gazed at him
as he drove. God, he's handsome. She abruptly looked away and told herself,
'Now don't get hung up on this. It's just an innocent invitation.' But what
if it wasn't? What if Mulder feels the same way? It certainly seems likely.
Maybe loosing control wouldn't be so bad.

Mulder held the door for Scully as they entered the building. It was the
Hart Park recreational facility. The dance room had a reasonable amount of
people in it, mostly middle aged. As Mulder paid he and Scully's donation,
an old, friendly looking man approached them. He bore a name tag reading,
'Stan'.
"Hi Fox! This must be Dana!" Scully looked questioningly towards Mulder
and regarded Stan. He seemed like an ordinary, happy old fellow, not like
the paranoid Lone Gunman. A nice change in Mulder's choice of friends, she
thought.
"Nice to meet you, Stan," she said, as she donned her name tag reading
'Scully'. She noticed that Mulder's read 'Fox'. She looked at Mulder,
giving him that inquisitive look of hers.
"They're kind of on a first name basis here." He smiled. Scully shrugged
her shoulders. This was definitely strange. He didn't like anyone calling
him by his first name.
Stan smiled and beckoned them towards the center of the floor where people
were converging in a circle. "Come on, this is an easy one."
Mulder took Scully's hand and linked onto the others. The music was a
calm, soothing melody. The dance was a simple one, just a grapevine and a
few walking steps. But all she could think about was how her hand was
connected to Mulder's. It was warm, and the touch was light. She liked this
small, extended contact. It wasn't much, but the small link sent shivers up
her arm. 'This is really bad,' she thought. She wouldn't look at Mulder.
Being in front of Mulder, she just kept facing right, the line of
direction, and concentrated on the dance. 'Keep yourself in check, Dana
Katherine.'
Mulder knew the dance and did it automatically. He was concentrating on
Scully. Her hand in his. She was so delicate, yet strong. Even her fingers
were slender. She had a strange look on her face, like she was fighting an
internal battle. But a beautiful face none the less. Radiant red hair. His
brain snapped him back to reality. 'She's your partner! You can't get
involved with her!' But his heart whispered back, 'you love her.'
The dance was over far too quickly. The circle broke formation, but Scully
was unwilling to break the connection. Neither was Mulder. They held
eachother's hands and turned to look into eachother's eyes. They both
looked the same way, mouths slightly open and eyes with a look of hope that
the other was feeling the same way. Mulder blinked and said, "Come on, I'll
introduce you to some people." He let go of her hand.
After they talked to some of the other dancers, they did a few more dances
like the first. Always the connection, always the thoughts that went with
it. Then came the danger. A couple dance. A red light was flashing in
Mulder's head. 'Just talk her through the dance and don't think about it,'
he thought.
Dana liked being in Mulder's embrace. She could smell the scent of him as
they waltzed. His hand on the small of her back. Their eyes locked. Mulder
just looked at her, admiring her beauty. The music ended. They were in a
corner. Again the moment of looking at eachother.
"Scully?" Her expression asked him, 'what?'. "Scully, I love you. I've
always love you." I can't believe I just did that. I just blurted that out!
She couldn't believe this was happening. She was flabbergasted but very
happy. She made her decision.
"Mulder, I love you too." His face broke into a wide smile, one of immense
happiness and relief.
	"Kiss me Mulder."

	And he did.
