But how could you make the whole things wrong? Especially this one. You know how important this is. I should take measures." The room is full of smoke, he has been smoking nearly 5 cigars. I don't feel so uncomfortable in the smoke now as I'm now so accustomed to it. "I've trusted you, Fowley. Is this because of your silly feelings for Mulder? Is it?" I can't say anything. Outside is dark. It's also dark here the only light is the light from the cigrette he's smoking. I know I'm going to be killed soon anyway, but I'm grateful that he came himself to kill me. It would be much less miserable than being killed by assassins that I do not know. Way back times - when I was a teenager, I once was in Maryland High School for a year. Melissa Scully - Dana Scully's sister and had been good friends. We sat together in classes, we sticked together in recess & lunch, we rod buses together. She slept over in my house, I had a sleep-over in her house. Dana would join us and have fun together. She was such a nice girl to hang around. I think she was very well-mannered. She was like a grown-up. She didn't like being with her friends because she thought they were so boiring. So she usually hung around with us. We had such a good time. Then I had to move to England. But we kept in touch as we promised to stay friends-forever. In England, I met Mulder. "Why aren't you saying anything? Do I look like a man with plenty of time?" "No, sir. I was just thinking. I did it because I owe them so much. I screwed up both of their lives." "How much? How could you get yourself at risk? Your life in exchange for Mulder's life?" ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* [Mulder] I open my eyes and all I can see is Scully. She is near-to-tears. She smiles at me for a moment then she faints. "Scully.." But my voice is so small. I think I'm spiritless right now. To see her fainting, I think about a girl I met in 1980. I stayed in my father's house for a summer break. I went to the library nearly everyday because there was nothing much fun to do rather other than reading. Dad was always busy with his own work. A lot of people were there, but there was one girl who captured my sight. She had long red hair, reaching her shoulder. She had been wearing jeans for three days. She hung around the scince section so I guess she was very interested in science. She was not so tall, but she was skinny. She was so white that I thought she had some kind of illness. Three days had past since I first saw her. Anyhow, she was hanging around at the fiction section that day which amazed me. Not like usual. She got out the thick book. "Moby Dick?" Oops. I said that aloud. "You got a problem with it?" "Yeah. The most stupid novel I've ever read." I didn't mean to say that, but words got out of my mouth. "Look what you're reading. Oh, you belive in extra-terrestrial life? Aliens. There are nothing like aliens out there." There was a silence for a moment. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to be so mean. It's just... I like Moby Dick so much." "No, I like Moby Dick as well. Great novel." "Starbuck." She reached out her hands. "Captain Ahab." We shook hands. The next day, I met her again in the library. "Want some?" She unfolded her hands, full of sunflower seeds. From then on, my favorite snack became sunflower seeds. "I just got them from my younger brother secretly. He wouldn't notice it. Well, I wish." I was just glad that she actually thought about me. I knew she was not a kind of girl who would trust a stranger like me. She was being very careful. There was still an ackward atmosphere between us. "Gotta go." She walked away. "See ya." When I got back home, dad told me that I should go back to my mom's house. "Why, dad? Don't you like my staying here?" "No, son. It's just that... well, your mom wants you to stay with her for now." I didn't even had a chance to say goodbye to her. Well, she wouldn't take me so seriously. I was just a guy she happened to met. That was all. Not more, not less. 1986. Diana Fowley was my chickadee. "Fox, I have to go to my friend's house for Christmas party. Well, as well as her birthday party." "Diana, it's snowing right now. The plane will be taking off in some hours. It's dark and cold. I don't think that's such a good idea." "I'd really want to because she's my best friend. I wouldn't miss it for the world. Actually, her birthday is in January but she's having a birthday party with a Christmas party. So I really have to go." "So who is this friend you're talking about?" "Queequeg. Well, we don't call by our names. We're really into Moby Dick. You know Moby Dick, don't you?" "Ishmael!" "Queequeg!" I felt a bit awkward. "Who is this, Ishmael?" "Oh, you know.. this is..." "Captain Ahab." Queequeg smiled at me. "Hi, Captain Ahab. Come in." The room was already so crowded with people. Diana was busy meeting her friends back in High School, she didn't have so much time to care about me. Then I was amazed when Diana spoke out "Starbuck!" "Oh... hi, Ishmael. How's it going?" I was sure she was a girl I met back in 1980. She looked much healthier now, not so skinny, her hair was a bit shorter now, but it was still bright red. She grew up more. She didn't notice me at first, but when her eyes met mine, they were fixed to mine. "So.. who is this?" "Captain Ahab. He's my boyfriend. Ahab, this is Starbuck. Queequeg's younger sister." Diana was still busy moving around to greet all of her friends. Starbuck looked at me for a moment then she slowly moved out of the room. I followed her. Outside was so cold, snowing. She was walking so fast, it was very hard for me to catch her up. "Wait, starbuck. Wait." She stopped for a moment, then she turned back toward me. "Why didn't you even say goodbye? Did you think of me as a girl you just play with because you are just bored of?" "No. Not at all. I was going to say goodbye to you, but things got screwed up, I'm sorry." I didn't know she would have been that hurt. I thought she thought of me as nothing but a stranger. "I was on a vacation and it was so hard for me to even go to the library. Anyway, we'd better get inside otherwise Diana will be searching for us." She was heading for her house but I held her by her wrist. "Wait. I was going to give you something when I was going to say good bye." "And you want me to believe that you were carrying it for like so many years?" "I believe in fate. If we were to meet again, we would meet again. Now, we met." "Amor Fati, Ahab." I've taken out the pearl earrings. "So what made you to buy such an expansive thing to a girl you've just met?" "I don't know. Must be fate." She stared at me for a moment. "So how did you start going out with Diana?" She seemed a bit jealous about me going out with Diana. "You're jealous?" "No.. no way. Diana is my sister's best friend." "Well. She had a long hair reaching her shoulder, skinny, pretty, well too bad she was a bit tall and didn't have red hair." Her cheeks were blushed though it was hard to see in the dark. "It's cold." We walked all the way through the woods, still snowing. I just wanted to play tricks on her, so I made a snowball and threw it to her. She glared at me and she threw a snowball. Her hair was wet because of the melting snow. "I'd like to give you the earrings now." I've put back the strands of her hair fallen over her blue eyes to the right place. She was taking her earrings off. "My boyfriend gave these to me, well long ago back in high school. Ouch." I helped her taking her earrings off. Our faces were very near. "So what would you like me to give you?" She asked me. "Well, what do you want to give me?" She thought about this for a moment then she started talking. "I'll be your... constant touchstone." "A what?" I was amazed to hear that. "I'm not as rich as you to buy something really nice because I can't even afford my tuition fees." Touchstone. I liked it. "Well. Be my constant touchstone then. Done." I was about to move away from her but she stared at me. I leaned toward her and her eyes were telling me that she was accepting it. She closed her eyes, and my lips were just inches away from hers. I could feel her shivering, maybe because of snow or maybe because of me. My heart was pounding. I didn't feel like this when I first kissed Diana. This is the first time I felt like this. TITLE: Days to remember (2/2) AUTHOR: Sherry C [Mulder] "Gottach! Starbuck, Ahab!" I was so surprised. I know Starbuck would have been surprised too. "Let's go guys. It's cold." I thought Diana have been watching us for some time. Starbuck walked in front of us. Diana locked her arms with mine. While we walked back to Starbuck's house, she fainted. "Starbuck!" Diana shook her but she didn't wake up. I held her in my arms, moved her to her house. "Queequeg, your sister is unconscious." The party got screwed up, the ambulance came. It was such a shame that our flight was on that night. "I'm sorry Queequeg, we've got to go. Our flight is in 3 hours. It's snowing so hard. Don't forget to tell me about your sister." It was all my faults that she fainted. I've kept her so long in the snow on such a cold night. Well, that was the last I've seen her. "What were you thinking? You were about to kiss Starbuck." Diana was pretty angry about that. Girl's jealousy, I couldn't stand it. "How's Starbuck?" "That's not the point here, Mulder. You've just met a girl, and you fall in love or what? You flirted with her? Guess what. She died in the ER. She was in coma for some days and passed away. What would Queequeg think about us? Huh?" "Did she really die? Did she?" "She didn't come out of the coma. She passed away." ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* [Scully] "Diana Fowley." I woke up from my bed. "Agent Scully, Agent Mulder woke up. But he's sleeping right now." I should go to Fowley's house. Diana helped me so much to wake Mulder up. Without her, Mulder would have died. The door was unlocked, which I felt so strange. She wouldn't leave her door unlocked. "Diana?" No answer came from the house. When I stepped inside, I could notice that someone has been smoking. "Smoking man..Oh..no. God.." I fould blood all over the floor. A gunshot to the head. "Diana..." I checked her pulse, but it was too late. "No..." Though I hated Diana for some while, but still, she was my sister's best friend. She helped me to save Mulder. I loved Diana's boy friend. He and I met in the summer, 1980. I called him "Ahab". I don't know his exact name. One snowy day, my sister had a party and Diana came over of course. She had a boy friend, Ahab, whom I met from the summer vacation in 1980. He looked just the same as before. He gave me pearl earrings, which are still my favorites. We could have kissed, but we didn't because of Diana. Melissa told me that I was unconscious for a while. I found that he and Diana were gone. Diana called my sister one day. I knew she wouldn't talk to me because she knew I was about to kiss her boyfriend. I begged Melissa to ask her about Ahab. "Hey Missy. Tell me. How is Ahab?" Melissa gave me a sad look, she was reluctant to talk. "What is it Missy? What is it? Well, if you found out that I like him, and you're disappointed because I like Diana's boy friend, well I'm sorry I didn't mean to fall in..." "Dana?" "Yeah?" "He's dead. A car accident." ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* [Mulder] "You're going to be working with agent Dana Scully." I've looked through her history, and I saw her picture. "Starbuck? No way." But she looked so much like Starbuck. So much. I tried to treat her in a cold way because I didn't want to remember anything about Starbuck, but whenever I saw her, she reminded me of Starbuck. When she first saw me, she didn't look like she has seen me before. She was just a girl who looked like Starbuck. There would be lots of people who look alike. She couldn't be Starbuck. Starbuck is dead. Diana told me that Queequeg's name was Melanie Paynes. No way. Starbuck's name should be Paynes as well. But her name is Dana Scully. No way. I thought about asking Scully when she came into my room, but I didn't. I just wanted to love Scully as Dana Katherine Scully. Not as Starbuck. ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ [Scully] "You... were my friend, and you told me the truth. Even when the world was falling apart, you were my constant... my touchstone." The words nearly got to my neck, "Are you Captain Ahab?" No way. That line should be in a book that I don't know. No way. Anyone can say that. A touchstone. It's just a easy word. Kids know that word. He couldn't be Ahab. Melissa told me he's dead. No way. Diana is dead so there's no one whom I can ask about it. Well, Mulder is Mulder. I know I'm going to love him as Mulder, not Ahab." Three words are still swimming in my head. "My constant touchstone."
