Denial

I knew it. I knew all those stories had to be true. I knew it
had to exist. I knew I could find it.

Fox Mulder was standing on a bluff overlooking the hot Nevada
desert. In the sandy expanse below stood a wire fence, the barbed loops
at the top defying any who wished to enter. The main road into the
compound was blocked by two armed guards, and a sign demanding that no
one gain entry.

Now all I need to do is get in, and I'll know all the secrets.

As the sandy wind pulled his clothes tight around his body, he
felt for his government-issue FBI identification, hoping it would get
him past the guards and into compound. He slid down the hill, dusted off
his pants, and proceeded to confront the two men. To his surprise, it
worked, and he walked down the road, his amber-brown eyes shielded
against the blowing debris. Pulling open the door to the first building,
he found...

Nothing. Is this supposed to be some kind of joke? Why would the
government guard an empty building? Of course! As a decoy in case an
intelligent creature like me got past the idiots at the front gate.

But as he ran from building to building, he found them all
empty. His skin split to reveal a creature not of this Earth, which
shimmered and disappeared, leaving the lifeless shell of Special Agent
Fox Mulder spread on the sand to be covered by the wind.

*****
Ok, I know it didn't make any sense, but I was in a weird mood. Not to
mention the pressure my friends have been putting me under to write a
companion story to "Assimilation."!
