Okay, okay, a lot. Describing Your Partner in One Word by Agent Spooky FBI Headquarters Washington D.C. 08:47 am I was called to Skinner's office. By the man himself. This usually means trouble. I'm pretty sure I didn't do anything to piss him off in a way that's more than usual, so I'm at a loss here. I'm fidgeting with my tie by the time his secretary says I can come in. I knock at his door, wait for his usual grunt that means 'come in' and then wait for another one that means 'have a seat.' When I do he finally looks up. I don't like the way he's looking at me. I don't like it at all. "I'll be direct, Mulder. As you well know, every year there's a seminar in the bureau." "Yes, sir." "And you managed to avoid every single one." I don't have a good answer and frankly, I don't think he wants me to give one, so I just keep my mouth shut. "But this year is different. The director himself called me in his office because he wanted to know why is it that the two agents under me have never been in this seminar." Again, I just stare at him. "Now, I know that agent Scully's been in a seminar when she first joined the bureau, so the problem must be with you." This time I start to say something but he cuts me off. "Don't even bother, Mulder. You are going this year. And if you don't, I'll personally see that you stay the rest of the year cleaning bathrooms with a toothbrush. And without your partner. Are we clear?" "Yes sir." "Very well. The seminar starts in a couple of hours." He starts to read the files on his desk again and I know I'm dismissed. I think my face gives away more than I thought it did, or my partner can read me very well, because as soon as I get in my office she asks "What happened, Mulder?" I sit heavily in my chair and let out a breath. "Skinner wants us to go to the seminar." She leans at the edge of my table. "I don't see how that's so bad." "A bunch of people, building a tower out of office furniture, and God knows what else." She gives me a small smile. "At least there's a wine and cheese reception." "Yeah, well we better be going, I don't want to be cleaning bathrooms with a toothbrush for the rest of the year." She gives me a puzzled look and follows me. The Seminar 10:32 am The place is crowded when we arrive. Judging by the look of shock on most of the people's faces they weren't expecting the Spooky patrol. Man, this place is crowded. Where's the wine anyway? Maybe if I get really drunk, I won't have any memory of what happened in this place. Or is to happen. I feel someone tapping on my shoulder. I turn around to come face to face with Mark Gwen. Oh, no. "Hey, Spooky. What happened? Someone told you aliens were coming to the seminar today?" I will not kill him I will not kill him. But by the look on Scully's face, she will. Fortunately, for Mark anyway, the man that will coordinate today's activities chose that moment to get on the small stage and began to speak in the microphone. "Good morning everyone and welcome. This year we are going to do somethings different from the traditional ones. First I want all male partners to come here and a get a piece of paper from this little basket. Each piece of paper has something different written in it. Oh, and if two men are partners then you two decide which one of you will come up here. The rest of you have a seat, please." Oh, great. Not only will I have to come up on the STAGE I will also have to say what's written on my piece of paper in the MICROPHONE. AND I'm the last in line. Now everyone will pay attention. If you're first or last you always get more attention. Well, I guess I'd be getting more attention anyway. When it's my turn to go there, there's only two pieces of paper in the little basket. I choose one of the two, unfold it and read it out loud like everyone before me did. "Describe your partner in one word." I look at Scully. I can see her beautiful baby blues looking intently at me. How can I describe her in one word? She saved my life so many times. She's my guardian angel. No, that's two words. My savior. Too corny. She's my friend. No, my best friend. Damn, that's two words again. How can I do this? She's the woman I love. She's...everything. Hey, that's it. "Everything," I say in the microphone. I can see some smiles and I hear some people say 'I knew it'. And I can also see Scully's cheeks turning red. Maybe is because of so many faces staring at her or maybe because of what I said or maybe both. When the seminar ended, I drove Scully home. We still haven't spoken. When I arrive at her place, I kill the engine and look at her. She doesn't look at me, just keep staring out of the windshield. "Well, that wasn't so bad." "No, it wasn't." "Are you okay, Scully?" She turns to look at me. "Did you really mean it, Mulder?" "Of course I did, Scully. You are everything to me. Without you I don't know where I'd be today. I don't even know if I'd still be here." "You are everything to me too, Mulder." She whispers. Then she kisses my forehead and gets out of the car. "Goodnight, Mulder." "Sweet dreams." I wait until I see a light come up in her apartment to start the engine. And I'm glad there wasn't a single glass of wine at the seminar. THE END
