"You did what?" The stunned silence that filled the room was louder than
any tantrum she could have thrown. "Why did you do it, Mulder?"
He took her hand and looked into her eyes. "I was lonely, and was coming
to terms with the idea of never seeing you again. Kristen didn't mean
anything to me."
Recognition crossed her face. "Kristen Kilar? You slept with a
suspect?"
"Well, yes, but she didn't mean anything to me-"
She stood up. "Get out." Her voice had taken on a frosty tinge, her
eyes totally devoid of any emotion.
 "Scully..."
"I said GET OUT." Knowing there was no hope in talking to her, he
quietly left her apartment.
<How could he do this to me?> She stared at her hands through the tears.
Since she began to work in the x-files division, they had been a pair.
Every day, Dana fell a little bit more in love with her partner. Their
relationship was her anchor. Not only were they close physically, they
were able to understand one another on a higher level. After Melissa's
death, he was the only she could talk to, call in the middle of the night
after the nightmares. And she loved him for it.
She knew he had been distraught after her abduction. Melissa had told
her how upset he was when they picked out her tombstone, when her mother
decided to take her off life support. When she was deciding whether to
live or die, it was his image, his presence that pulled her back. It was
worth it when she saw his face in the hospital. <It's a sign,> she
thought. <He does love me.>
Then he broke the news to her about Kristen.
 <It'll never be the same.>
Dana dried her eyes and stood up. "First thing tomorrow I will tell
Skinner I want to be reassigned." Once again, she looked down at her
hands. Pulling off the engagement ring, she made a mental note to place
it on Mulder's desk tomorrow morning.

"And there's a danger in loving somebody too much,
And it's sad when you know it's your heart you can't trust.
There's a reason why people don't stay who they are.
Baby, sometimes love just ain't enough."
