Rating: PG The sun bled slowly into the uneasy water, marking the end of the day. She sat high above the twitching waves, her small feet dangling freely over the edge of the cliff. The wind found its way under her windbreaker and she drew her knees up to her chest and wrapped her arms around herself. The ocean drew ragged breaths beneath her, struggling so loudly she didn't hear him approach from behind. He watched her silently. She sat much too close to the edge for his taste, the brilliant scenery and her small frame framed by the stone arch that stood between where he stood and where she sat. He stepped quickly through the quasi-cave and came to a stop behind her. She didn't even start as he slid down behind her and wrapped his long arms around her frame. "How did you find me?" Scully asked, her eyes watching a lone bird as it swirled and danced with the waves. She tracked a graceful dive before turning her face a fraction towards the man behind her. "Believe it or not, I'm a Federal Agent." His words were warm and solid, as comforting as the arms holding her. She chuckled and leaned into his warmth. The ocean swallowed a piece of the sun and the temperature was fleeing as well. They sat quietly for a long time, until they were each rapidly blinking away the glaring spots the sun had left them. "I feel safe." The words reached Mulder's ears as barely a sigh above the now raging waters below. "And you don't feel safe at home?" Sarcasm he hadn't meant still dripped from his mouth and spilled onto the moment. The inevitable stiffening of her muscles never came, however, and instead she twisted her fingers in his and sighed. "I didn't mean that--" He tried to explain. Her sigh turned into a chuckle. "I know, Mulder. I know all about you." "You do?" Scully could sense his grin. Thank you, Scully, for understanding again. "And what do you know?" "Everything." Scully leaned her head on his shoulder and watched the sun dipping another toe into the water. The waves reached probing fingers towards the disappearing light, seducing it downwards. Scully willed. "Pray tell." He whispered. "You're like...the water." She cocked her chin towards the blue below them. "You're everywhere. You're everything. You fit if you want to, you overflow at will." Mulder wasn't sure if that was a compliment or not, so he held still. He heard a soft chuckling before she continued. "You have amazing tensile strength." "You don't know just how strong my tensile is, Scully." Mulder murmured into her ear. "Setmyselfup..." she whispered before continuing. "But once you break the surface there's an amazing depth. To be completely poetic...you're like the undiscovered country." "I thought that was the future." "This is my story, Mulder, go with me." Scully swatted lightly at one of his hands. She wasn't entirely sure if she'd heard it, it breathed with the sound of the ocean hitting the rocks below. "You're like the water. Nothing holds you back, nothing stops you. Even the strongest barriers can be worn down by your patient persistence. Men - people - try to fight the current. But they end up pulled along despite. You overpower, you survive, you destroy." "If I get cold enough, do I turn to ice?" the ocean reprimanded him. Or was that Scully? In any case, he silenced. "You're everwhere, in some form. You're necessary." Necessary. When did that happen? She had always, always been necessary to him. But he had never imagined the possibility that she herself could need, or want, that same of him. "Does it bother you...the current?" Mulder's voice was as jagged as the rocks below, nearly cutting Scully. "Sometimes. Sometimes I want to go in an entirely different direction, but it sweeps me against my will. Other times, I'd rather be directing it. But most of the time...I just enjoy the surprise of where I stop." "If I tell you something will you promise not to laugh?" The childlike quality of her voice caused a warm ache to coil through his chest and wrap itself around his throat. He leaned forward and buried his face in her hair and planted a small kiss on the nape of her neck. "I love the water." The wayward ocean chose that moment to go still. "I love the disobedience of it, the freedom of it, the way it is dependable in its independability. I love the water." Mulder didn't say a word, only kissed her again. His breath hitched and Scully's small hand found his knee and caressed it gingerly. The moment ended when a large wave slammed against the craggy shoreline below and sent a mist of spray to cover them. Mulder scrambled backwards in surprise, but Scully didn't move. She dipped her head backwards and let the water envelope her. Another wave crashed, but lacked the power of a repeat performance. "Come on, Scully, let's go to the hotel." Mulder hoped he injected the right note of promise into this voice. Scully's head swiveled around and her smile told him that he had. She stood slowly, still facing the ocean, and tracked another wave as it gained speed across the choppy surface. Just before the wave ploughed into the rocks, she closed her eyes and reached her hands toward the water. The wave made contact and the water splashed much higher than before. Foam and water sprinkled Scully completely and when she turned, there was just enough light to see a brilliant smile on her face. She looked angelic and wild at the same time, the glisten from the thin sheen of water on her face making her look like she'd just made love. Sweet. Langorous. Sensual. Mulder was by her side in two strides, pulling her into a fierce embrace. His lips sought out hers and they pressed together chastely. Mulder pulled back from her and smiled widely. He watched as a rivulet of water tracked down over her mole and he leaned forward. The tip of his tongue danced against her upper lip and caught the salty droplet. Scully's mouth opened slightly in response, managing only to whisper "Hotel" before Mulder's mouth silenced her. His hands snaked into her hair and pulled her closer. The sun slipped silently deeper into the ocean, the orange reflection on the water only a reflection yet looking like it was glowing from within. The insubordinate ocean pulled the last of the light beneath its murky depths, and the horizon became indistinguishable. Stars glanced off the settling waves, and sky and water became one.
