By: Tumn ****************************************************************** SUNDAY MORNING 11:43 AM SCULLY'S APARTMENT Mulder yawned and opened his eyes. He attemped to stretch on the small couch, but soon realized that it was not possible. He was not alone. There was someone on the couch with him. Mulder began to paninc. Where was he? He dared a glance around the room and realized where he was. He was in Scully's apartment, on her couch. And, as for the other person on the couch, it was Scully, her tiny figure curled up next to him. He smiled down at her, remembering last night. It almost seemed like a dream. He had finally confessed his feelings to Scully, and she returned them. He felt wonderful. He reached down and pushed a small strand of auburn hair from her face. She was so beautiful when she slept. he asked himself. He thought back on all the times he had taken her for granted. The times he had run off on some wild UFO chase and left her behind without even a note to tell where he was going. He really treated her like crap sometimes. he wondered. He reached down and stroked her cheek. Scully awoke to the sensation of someone touching her face. She grogily opened her eyes and looked up. Right into Mulder's shining eyes. she thought. She smiled at him, and snuggled closer to him, draping her arm around him. "Mulder, tell me last night wasn't a dream." "It wasn't," he assured her. "Good," she said. Mulder and Scully laid there for a few more minutes before getting up and getting showered and dressed for the day. Scully showered first, and after she was dressed, she took a stroll down to her mailbox, which was on the first floor of the apartment building. There was mostly bills, she realized as she glanced at the mail on her way back upstairs. The was also a letter from her aunt, and a small beige envelope from the Bureau. An invatation. she wondered. Most of the FBI's functions were announced in memos passed around work, or in a simple letter. But this, this appeared to be a formal invatation. She entered her apartment to find Mulder in the kitchen eating a bowl of Special K, his still wet hair running in every direction. "You look lovely," she kidded, tossing the mail on the table. She walked around him to the cabinet to retreive a bowl, and touseled his hair on the way. "Thanks," he returned, sarcasm flooding his voice. She let out a small laugh. Mulder's heart melted at the sound. She had such a beautiful laugh. He rarely heard it, and he cherished the few times he did. He glanced at her. "You look nice." "Uh, thanks, I guess," she replied. She was wearing an over-sized white T-shirt and a pair of sweatpants. she wondered. She poured herself a bowl of cereal and walked over to the table to join him. She looked through the bills, and once again came upon the invatation. Mulder looked at her questioningly, and she just shrugged. "It from the Bureau," she told him. Scully opened the envelope and pulled out a small card. YOU ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO ATTEND THE FBI's 50th ANNIVERSARY BALL. Scully was surprised. She didn't know the Bureau had been around that long. She showed Mulder the card. He read it over carefully. "It says it's this Friday. That's kinda short notice, isn't it?" he asked. She shook her head. "Mulder, it was postmarked Wednesday. I haven't picked up my mail since...." Her voice trailed off. She looked at him and managed a weak smile. "Since Krycek." "Well, my dear. It seems we have been invited. Would you like to acompany me? I would be honored to have your beautiful self standing by my side all evening." "Well, I don't know," she told him. "I was kinda holding out for Pendrell." Scully tired as hard as she could not to laugh. The hurt expression on his face was just too cute. She burst out laughing, and soon he was laughing with her. When they had calmed down, she rose from the table and set her bowl in the sink. "Of course I'll go with you," she told him. "I wouldn't want to go with anyone else." He rose from the table and also set his bowl in the sink. He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. "Good," he said, smiling. And he leaned down and kissed her. **************************************************************** FRIDAY AFTERNOON 5:30 PM BASEMENT OF THE J. EDGAR HOOVER BUILDING Scully looked at her watch, and then looked at Mulder. He was quietly glancing through case files. They had had a meeting earlier with Skinner, and things hadn't gone well. The Assistant Director had informed them that Krycek's body had disappeared from the crime scene at their last meeting. This meeting awas to inform them thay they were in trouble. He was getting pressure from the "higher powers" to investigate the disappearance. "They" thought that Mulder may have removed the body to hide evidence. Skinner was pissed. He could only protect his agents so far, and then they were on their own. Mulder tried to tell him that she may not have killed Krycek , and that he may have gotten up and left. He didn't listen to mulder at all, and sent the two agents back to their basement office with a warning. If anything else happened, Skinner was not going to save them. They were skating on thin ice with hot blades. Even after being lectured by Skinner, Scully stayed positive. She was really looking forward to the ball, and she was glad to be back at work. She had conviced Skinner to let her come back early, telling him that she wasn't going to be doing any field work and promising him that she would be fine. He reluctantly agreed to let her return, but she was stuck to her desk all day. "Mulder," she called quietly, snapping him out of his report. "We should get going if we're going to this ball tonight." Mulder glanced at his watch. She was right. It was 5:30, and the ball was at 7. They should be going. He swept his files into a pile and rose from his desk. Scully did the same. They grabbed their trench coats and left. On the way home, Scully though back on the week. It went by so fast. Mulder had stayed at her house for the week, and everything was wonderful. They had both decided to keep their relationship from the FBI and Skinner. They had only one fight the whole week. For them, it was a record. It seemed that now that they had confessed their true feelings, they fought less. It had only been a week, but Scully could tell things were different. It was a good different, though. She was happier than ever. Mulder was happier, too. He was finally with the woman he loved, and an emptyiness had been filled in his life. It was hard for him, though. It was hard to sit across the room from the woman you loved everyday and not be able to kiss her, or tell her you loved her, just because someone might be bugging the room. It was hard knowing that if their relationship was found out, "they" might try to kill them. he constantly asked himself. But, never the less, he was happy. It had taken alot for him to confess to Scully his feelings, but he was now glad he had done it. She felt the same way, and everything was perfect. After a few moments, they both returned to the present. Mulder had arrived at Scully's apartment. He leaned over and kissed her. "I'll pick you up at 6, ok?" he told her. She nodded and went up into her apartment. She had alot to do before tonight. Mulder drove home faster than usual. He was so excited about tonight. He parked the car and ran up to his apartment. He was in such a rush that he bypassed the elevator and took the stairs. He rushed to unlock his door, and when he flung it open, he jumped. There, sitting on his couch, was Krycek, fully dressed for the ball. "You can't... You're dead....What the...," Mulder stammered. Krycek tossed his head back and laughed. "Agent Mulder, I'm surprised. You didn't talk to Skinner recently? I disappeared!" "Cut the crap Krycek, who attacked Scully?" Krycek just laughed harder. "Trust no one, isn't that what your late informant told you?" Mulder walked over to Krycek and grabbed him by the collar, pulling him to eye level. He pulled out his gun and thrust it to Krycek's temple. "Who was it?" he demanded. "oh gee Mulder! You're not gonna shoot me, are you?" Mulder picked up the sarcasm in his voice and kneed Krycek in the groin. Krycek fell to the floor moaning. Krycek seemed to soften under Mulder's ever so gentle persuasion. "It was a clone. A clone of me. They didn't want to send me, they were afraid I would mess it up. They created a clone and sent him. After Scully stabbed him, she called you and blacked out. At some time before the medics arrived, the clone managed to get himself up and he got himself back to the Consortium's headquarters. There, they killed him." Mulder didn't belive a word of it. Krycek knew how gullible he could be and was using that against him. Mulder wasn't going to fall for it. "Tell me the truth!" he yelled, once again shoving the barrell of the gun in Krycek's face. Suddenly, the door to Mulder's apartment burst open. Standing in the doorway was Scully, fully dressed for the ball in a full length emerald green dress. Mulder's jaw hit the floor when he saw how beautiful she looked. Krycek looked to Mulder, and seeing him distraced, made a break for the door. As he tried to run past her, Scully karate kicked him in the stomach. "I killed you once you lying a**hole. I'll do it again." Her gun was squarely aimed at him. Wioth out taking her eyes off of Krycek, she spoke to Mulder. "What's going on here?" "Krycek was just explaining to me how he's alive without a scratch and the body disapeared from the scene. By the way, you look fantastic." "Thanks. So, is this little story of his at all credible.?" Mulder shrugged. "It could happen, but I think he's lying." "Excuse me, but I'm leaving," Krycek said as he rose from the floor. "You're not going anywhere yet," Scully growled. Mulder had to hold back a smile. Seeing Scully in a ball gown aiming a gun at someone was almost too much. And he loved listening to her when she got mad. Her voice had such authority. He walked around to Scully and looked at Krycek. "What's wrong Krycek? Hot date or something?" "He is dressed for it," Scully commented. "I'm escorting a friend of mine to the ball this evening, which I assume you two will be attending. You can't hold me here. It's illegal to hold someone against their will. You should know, Agent Scully." That last jab hurt Scully bad. Real bad. She took her gun and placed it right between Krycek's eyes. "Do you think you date will still go with you if you're dead?" Mulder saw the anger and hurt in Scully's eyes. He reached up and grabbed her gun from her and told Krycek to get out. Krycek took the opportunity and ran out the door. Mulder looked at Scully, and saw her questioning stare. "We couldn't hold him, and you know it. We already have Skinner riding us about the missing body. Krycek's story might help with that, but I'm not sure Skinner will buy it." He then began to relay Krycek's story about the clone. Scully agreed with Mulder. "Mulder, it's impossible. Ok, yes, we know the government can creat clones, but, it's just not possible that they could.." Mulder cut her off. We had better get going. We can argue this tonight, but if we don't leave now, we're going to be late." She nodded and followed him out the door. At the car, he opend up the door for her to get in, and took a moment to admrie her outfit. Her dress was a beautiful shade of green that was perfect for her complexion, and it hugged her body in all the right places. It had It had long green slevesthat made her arms look long and graceful. Her hair was pulled back with little spiral curls falling here and there around her face. She looked so absolutely beautiful. He gently kissed her forehead. "You look absolutely stunning." Scully was pleased with his reaction. She was worked hard to look great tonight. She wanted tonight to be perfect. It wasn't often she showed up somewhere on the arm of the most handsome man in the world. And if he didn't look fantastic all the time, tonight was no exception. He had on a black tuxedo that made him look very sexy. And his hair was behaving. Scully looked over and smiled at him. "You look pretty good yourself, Fox. It's amazing how good you look in a tux." Mulder blushed. He walk over to his side and got into the car. he thought. **************************************************************** BALLROOM OF THE WILLIAM PENN HOTEL FBI 50TH ANNIVERSARY BALL 7:15 PM Skinner looked up from his table and at the door. He thought they would be here by now. he told himself, His wife smiled at him. He reached acroos the table and squeezed her hand. "Look Walter, your agents are here," she said. Skinner looked to the door, and his jaw almost hit the floor. Mulder looked great, and Scully, well, Scully didn't look like Scully. He got up and headed towards them to greet them. He extended his hand to each agent in turn. "Agent Scully, you look fantastic. I hardly recognized you. How are you feeling?" "I'm fine, thank you for asking," she replied. "Well, Mulder, I hope you're taking good care of her. Enjoy yourselves tonight." And with that, he was off across the room. Mulder smiled at Scully. "Shall we find ourselves a table?" he asked her. "Sounds good. Let's keep an eye out to see who Krycek is escorting tonight. It could be interesting." She laughed and followed him through the crowd. They found a table by the dance floor and sat down. they began to talk about work and such, when one of Mulder's friends from Oxford came over. He introduced himself to Scully as Special Agent Matt Shutz, and then introduced his date, Melia, who was a physical therapist. She was smart and witty, and she and Scully sat and talked while Mulder and his friend made up for lost time. After awhile, the other couple excused themselves. They had seen Matt's supervisor, and Matt thought that he sould go say hi. When they had gone, Scully looked over at Mulder. "Who was he?" "I went to Oxford with him. We both majored in Psychology. I never knew he had joing the Bureau." Scully looked out across the dance floor. The song changed from Janet Jackson's Together Again to a slower song, which Scully recognised to be Madonna's Crazy for you. Mulder rose from his seat and extended his hand to her. "Dance with me," he whispered. He led her to the floor, and pulled her close. They swayed to the music, and Scully listened to the words. They were so perfect. Trying hard to control my heart I walk over to where you are. Eye to eye we need no words at all. Slowly now we begin to move, every breath i'm deeper into you. Soon we two are standing still in time If you read my mind you'll see I'm crazy for you Touch me once and you'll know It's true I never wanted anyone like this, it's all brand new. You'll feel it in my kiss. I'm crazy for you. Scully realized jsut how close Mulder was holding her and she began to notice the other agents staring at them. As the song ended, she looked up at Mulder and smiled. She leaned up and whispered in his ear. "I think we should be a little more careful. We're attracting stares." Mulder just laughed and smiled. "We're not attracting stares, you are. You look so stunning tonight Dana. Any guy would die for a dance with you." She smiled and playfully punched him in the shoulder. The next song came on, and Mulder pulled Scully to him again. She gave him a warning look. "I'll be careful," he promised. "We wouldn't want anyone to find out." Scully gave in, and she soon found herself lost in Mulder's arms and the music. The song was so beautiful. It was I'll Make Love To You by Boys II Men. Mulder and Scully kept a safe distance so as not to draw much attention, but all their feelings were conveyed through their eyes. Toward the end of the song Mulder pulled her cloe and sang the last words of the song to her. "Baby tonight is your night And I will do you right Just make a wish on your night Anything that you ask I will give you the love of your life." Scully looked up at him and tried to fight back tears. "I love you so much Mulder. I don't know where'd I'd be without you." The agents shared a hug and walked off the dance floor. Mulder went to fetch drinks, and while he was gone, a friend of Scully's pulled up a chair next to her. Scully turned to see who it was, and was surprised. It was Agent Pendrell, and on his arm was none other than Nurse Sustarsic. "So good to see you Pendrell," she lied. Pendrell started to introduce Sustarsic, but Scully stopped him. "We've already met," she told him. Seeing the coinfused look on his face, she explained about her accident and the hospital. Pendrell began to rant on about how lovely Scully looked, and Scully silently prayed for Mulder to save her. As if on cue, Mulder appeared behind her. Her handed her a drink. "Hey there Pendrell," he said, flashing a big cheesy smile at the agent and his date. Pendrell, who never really liked Mulder anyway, took the smile as an invitation to leave. He excused himself and his date and left. Mulder and Scully sat and talked for awhile, and then Scully decided she wanted to dance some more. The agents rose from the talbe and headed for the dance floor. After a few fast songs, they dimmed the lights as a soft slow song drifted into the air. It was called "I Should Tell You", from the new broadway play RENT. Scully smiled and pulled Mulder close, but it didn't last long. Skinner tapped on Mulder's shoulder and asked to cut in. Mulder graciously agreed. Skinner took his place and began making small talk with Scully. She could see right through him. "What do you want to say, Skinner?" she asked him. He looked at her, surprised. He didn't think he was that transparent. he thought. "Scully, I just wanted to know if you were having a nice time tonight." He smiled at her, trying to avoid what he knew he had to do. "It's been a wonderful evening, thank you. Whoever planned it did a great job." "Good, I'm glad to hear it. How about Mulder? You two seem to be having a great time." "Yes, he's a wonderful dancer, not unlike yourself." "Why, thank you, Ms. Scully. Well, I just wanted to tell you that I can kinda see what's going on between you and Mulder. You two had better be careful. I'm just going to pretend I don't know what's going on. I have no right going into your personal lives, but try to keep it at home. OK?" Scully smiled. "Where we really that obvious?" "No, but I could tell. Right now, tough, just about every man is jealous of Mulder. Agent Scully, you look fantastic." Scully blushed. "Thank you sir." "It's true. I didn't notice you when you walked in the door. You and Mulder, hmmm. I guess that 'they' didn't see that coming." He laughed. "Well, I'll return you to your escort. Just keep what I said in mind. Be careful." The song ended, and after giving her hand a gentle squeeze, he went to retreive his wife from Mulder, who had so graciously danced with her while Skinner was with Scully. Mulder started to head back to Scully, but was interrupted by another agent. He recognized the agent, but couldn't quite remember her name. "Agent Mulder, I'm Agent Flavin. We went to the Academy together. I just weanted to say hi and tell you that I'm jealous. You and your partner have such a great relationship. I wish my partner and I were like that." Mulder smiled. "Scully's special. I'm really lucky to have her. She's a real hard worker, and she's like my best friend." Flavin's date came up beside her and whispered something in her ear. She turned to look att him and he nodded. She turned back to Mulder. "I'm sorry, I have to go. Something came up at home. The babysitter called. Well, nice to see you again. Good night." She and her date fled. Mulder turned and was surprised to see Scully standing there. "You heard?" "Every word," she replied. "Best friend, huh? I see where I'm loved!" She put on a mock pout. Mulder laughed gently and smiled at her. He realized he had been doing that alot lately. Smiling. "You know were you're loved. Right here," he said as he took his hand and laid it over his heart. Scully blushed and remembered Skinner's words. She wanted to kiss him so badly right now, but she couldn't. "C'mon. One more dance and then we'll haed home for the evening." He nodded, and led her out onto the dance floor. As he pulled her close to dance, he saw a famaliar face. 'There he is!" he whispered to Scully. He causually turned them so she could see him. "Oh my gosh! It is him!" Scully casually took the lead, wandering them over to where Krycek was. She smiled her most genuinely fake smile at him. "What are you doing?" Mulder whispered in her ear. Scully just smiled at him and turned back to Krycek. "How are you doing this fine evening, Krycek?" "Just lovely, thank you," he replied. "Ms. Scully, I'd like to introduced you to my date, Amanda. Amanda, this is Dana Scully and Fox Mulder." Amanda smiled and extended her hand to the agents, shaking each agent's hand. She was about 5'3", and thin, with shoulder length brown hair. She was wearing a ankle length blue off-the-shoulder dress, that accencuated her blue eyes. She looked like a runway model. "Nice to meet you." With formal introductions over, Krycek excused himself and his date and headed for the bar. Mulder looked down at Scully. "Let's go home, Dana." **************************************************************** Life goes on.
