My first nonrelationshippy story, although I must admit that it has a lot of UST.This takes place after 3 obviously, but before WOTC and Syzygy(when Mulder flirted with the locals). Thanks to April, because she loves 3,even though she is not a relationshipper. Thanks also to Evan and Sandra the original UST couple. I'd love comments. A Familiar Face by awriter78@hotmail.com He recognized her immediately from the mug shot that Scully had given him. The pale face, the red lips, the mop of dark hair that framed her face. He knew it was too much of a coincidence. They were in So Cal investigating vampire-like murders. It obviously made him think of her. He wondered if she was alive. Now here was the proof. A mug shot. She had been arrested and was being held in jail. Waiting for them to question them. "Her name is Kristen Kilar," an oblivious Scully reported. "Lives in L.A. Thirty-one years old." They were in the rental car. He wondered if he should tell Scully that he knew Kristen. He knew that Scully wasn't his girlfriend or anything, but he could understand the tension it could create. He wondered if Kristen remembered him. She did. As soon as she saw them, a flash of recognition was in her sad, dark eyes. "We're with the FBI." Scully said. "I'm Agent Dana Scully and this is my partner Fox Mulder." Kristen ran a hand through her dark hair. She met his eyes. "How are you, Fox?" He studdered. "F-fine,thanks. And you?" She smiled cooly at him. "Great, considering I'm being charged with six murders. At least I'm alive. Didn't burn with the others like everyone thought I did. The other body was a cleaning woman." He nodded. Scully was silent. He knew that wasn't a good sign. She finally spoke up. "Would you feel more comfortable if I left the questioning up to you?" He nodded relieved. As she was leaving he squeezed her shoulder gently. "I owe you one." She smiled."I'll remember that." Kristen watched her leave. "She's cute, Fox. Is she the one who disappeared?" He nodded not wanting to remember that part of his life. "No wonder you were so depressed," she said sounding almost jealous. "It's not like that," he protested. "I must have been a poor substitute," Kristen began. "Look, I'm here to question you, not the other way around. Okay, Ms.Kilar, where were you the night of September 13?" he began nervously. She shook her dark hair and laughed. "It doesn't matter what I say, right? You know I killed those people. I know I killed those people. The only question is will I get an injection or be gassed?" He cleared his throat and suddenly wished Scully was there. "That's not my decision, but since you confessed, you have made things much easier." "Good," she said. "So how does it feel to intimately know the criminal?" He didn't answer her, "Well, Ms.Kilar, it seems that this part of the investigation is over." "Nice seeing you again, Fox." she said. He only nodded at her as he walked outside to the car. Scully was in the car looking over Kristen's files. She didn't say anything when he got in. "Thanks," he said to her. "For what?" she asked. "Letting you question her? It was the least I could do. Besides you didn't seem too happy about having me there." That stung. "I know. It's a long story. But she's not important to me." Not like you are, he thought. She seemed to understand what he meant. "It's not my business anyway." He smiled. "I know, but..." he didn't know how to finish his thought. She reached out and squeezed his hand and all thoughts of Kristen Kilar were forgotten. Epilogue He looked at the newspaper. She had been accused of all counts of murder but one, and would receive the death penalty. "One of the most heinous crimes performed by a young woman," one newspaper said. He felt an overwhelming surge of conflicting emotions. He still felt guilty about his involvement with her, and guilty over the way he treated her last month. He took a deep breath and threw the newspaper in the trash can and went back to work. The end.
