First Encounter 1/1 by Ian Horsewell

Dana Katherine Scully, medical doctor, special agent of the Federal Bureau
of Investigation and a petite redhead, was nervous. As that thought occured
to her for the first time, she smiled to herself, realising that it was
truer than she had first thought. After all, this was a fairly unusual
assignment...
They'd assigned her to a section she'd heard of only in rumours and
recounted stories. She hadn't even believed that the X-Files really existed.
But, she thought to herself as she walked steadily towards the elevator,
she'd certainly heard of the agent in charge. And now she was being asked to
spy. to inform her superiors of any improper actions or dubious decisions of
her new partner.
The doors opened and she stepped inside. For the first time, she pressed
the button for the sub-basement, two levels below the ground. It was as if
someone wanted the X-Files buried, metaphorically if not literally. As the
elevator smoothly moved down, Agent Scully's thoughts focused on the agent
she was about to meet, and everything she knew about her new partner.
Agent Mulder was well known in the Bureau, and had been well-respected for
quite some time. A degree and then a doctorate at Oxford, England. Several
years working in violent crimes, as a profiler of serial killers and other
repeat offenders, resulting in the nickname 'Spooky' Mulder. But the stories
had circulated... the mysterious past, the abduction all those years ago
that was thought to have triggered Mulder's obsession with the paranormal.
Dana Scully frowned at her distorted reflection in the steel of the doors.
The paranormal? She'd never found a situation, a problem, a mystery, that
could not be solved using conventional science and a little intelligence.
But Agent 'Spooky' Mulder PhD had requested a transfer to the legendary,
perhaps mythological X-Files, those which the Bureau could not explain. And
the success rate had been surprisingly high... if you believed the reports
filed which included suggestions of extra-terrestrials, strange creatures,
and a whole host of cases that read like a 'Who's Who in the Paranormal'.
The doors opened and she stepped out, one hand automatically smoothing back
her hair as she looked along the dusty, somewhat dim corridor. There... past
an ancient coffee machine, was a door. The door to the X-Files, where Agent
Mulder was waiting for her. She took a deep breath, stepped up to the door
and knocked loudly on it. The answer was surprisingly quick in coming.
"Come on in... welcome to the FBI's least wanted." Despite herself she
smiled at the remark, pushing open the door to step into the dark, cluttered
office. A tall figure stood up, turning away from the slide projector and
reaching towards a light switch as Dana spoke for the first time.
"I'm Special Agent Dana Scully..." The light revealed the figure as a
tall brunette, slender, with a tailored suit that fitted her very well. The
lopsided smile on her face was matched with a piercing gaze. The woman spoke
again in her musical contralto. "I'm Samantha Mulder."
