I killed Donnie Pfaster.

Not as God's hand, not as the devil's tool, not as a 'temporarily
insane' or 'hypnotically influenced' woman.

*I* killed him.

Me. Dana Katherine Scully. I walked into that room, I saw him
standing there, and when he turned those eyes to look at me,
I pulled the trigger in one sure motion.

I didn't even blink.

Should I feel remorse for my actions?

Of course. I took the life of an unarmed man who was in no way
immediately threatening my life or that of my partner.

*Do* I feel remorse?

Yes. I have always thought of myself as a righteous person, and
yet I killed. Regardless of the benefit given to society by my
actions, I cannot deny the fact I committed a sin.

And if I had to repeat those moments, is there anything which
would stop me from killing him again?

Just one...

An empty gun.

AUTHOR'S NOTES: The ending scenes of Orison have already, in
less than one day's time, been more highly debated than I've
seen in a very long time. Religiously, morally, ethically,
legally--all the possible angles of interpretation have
weighed in with their justifications or remonstrations of
Scully's actions.

And while I did not intend to write this vignette in a 155-word
format story, I realized what I had to say was actually rather
focused and succinct. So I simply thought "Hey, try something
new while you're at it," LOL--and here we are.

I know not everyone will agree with how I've interpreted
Scully's actions here, and thank god for that--debating the
questions posed by The X-Files is half the fun of watching
the show...

At least it is for me.
