February 10, 1999 Chang's Kitchen "Scully...You have some soy sauce right....there," Mulder said as he carefully wiped the drip off of the corner of Scully's mouth. "Thanks, Mulder, I think I can handle that..." They ate in relaxed silence, pausing only to re-adjust their chopsticks. Mulder had taken Scully there to celebrate nothing in particular. A non-date date, he had called it. Presently, they finished their meals, and each one was handed a fortune cookie on a small white plate by a tall lanky Asian man. "Don't they usually just give us the cookies in a 'community' plate?" "Could be a sign..." As they cracked their cookies open, Mulder eyed another couple out of the corner of his eye read their fortunes, jump up out of their chairs, and leap into a passionate embrace. After hearing a muffled gasp from Scully, he pulled out the little white sheet of paper. "Wha...?" "Mulder, you all right?" asked Scully. "Y-yeah, I'm ok." "Well, if you wouldn't mind, I think I'd like another cookie." As if by magic, the tall man appeared again, and gave both Mulder and Scully two new cookies Scully bit her lip and cracked hers open. HOW HE ADORES YOU. She looked up, to see a white-faced Mulder reading his. ISN'T SHE BEAUTIFUL? Mulder coughed. "Scully?" "Yeah?" "I..I think I forgot to dechlorinate the water in my fish tank...I better get going before they die..." ********************** Scully sat down on her bed and rubbed her forehead tiredly. Why had she responded so fiercely to a little slip of paper shoved in a cookie? Tons of people probably got the same message, and *they* weren't panicking over it. She had just had a stressful week. Yes. That's it. But why had she taken so much effort in choosing a shirt with such a low V-neck? She sighed and walked over to her answering machine. "Hey Dana. This is Jen. Give me a call when you get back, ok?" Jen...Jen...Scully reached into her pocket to retrieve the number Jen, a college buddy, had given her earlier that day. She groaned when she found the first fortune from the Chinese restaurant. ROSES ARE RED, VIOLETS ARE BLUE, LOOK ACROSS THE TABLE, AND SEE THE MAN WHO LOVES YOU! *********************************************** February 13, 1999 Mulder sat in his car and tapped the steering wheel impatiently. The events of two days earlier were temporarily gone from his memory as he pulled up and walked into the same Chinese restaurant. He finished up his meal and was again approached by the same man with the fortune cookies. Still thinking nothing of it, he broke it open. SHE LOVES YOU TOO. (P.S. LOOK UP!) Mulder felt a great sense of dread in the pit of his stomach as he hesitantly looked up. His eyes were greeted by a small form turned away from him and a familiar shock of red hair. He sipped at his tea, no longer feeling the urge to leave, when he saw the tall man give Scully a cookie. He watched her slowly open it, and immediately he saw her back tense. ************************************************* She read it quietly to herself. HOW CAN YOU BE SO CLOSE BUT SO FAR AWAY? Since when did fortune cookies learn to be so damn proverbial? Scully got up and left in a huff. ************************************************ As Mulder got up to leave, he felt something enter his pocket. He looked back to see who did it, but there was no one. Mulder reached in. "Damn. Another fortune cookie." YOU LOVE HER TOO, DON'T YOU? Seeing that there was something written on the other side, he flipped the paper over. YOUR LUCKY NUMBERS: 5551013 "Dammit! This isn't funny!" Mulder got into his car and started to drive. To where, he did not know. Did he love her? Yes, of course. But she was his partner, and nothing more. Only someone he would (and did) go to the ends of the earth for, sacrifice absolutely anything for... No. She was his partner. His friend. Not his lover. Not yet, at least. Mulder slammed his foot on the brakes and chided himself for that thought. No, she would *never* be his partner for life, never. It wasn't that she deserved better, because if she chose him, that was her own decision. And she made good decisions. But...why would she want him? He was always ditching her, hurting her, and he was the root of her perils. No, she wouldn't want him. But did he love her? Great. Now he was being pursuaded by a dinky fortune cookie! What was wrong with him? He parked near a building to gather his thoughts, shifted uncomfortably in his seat and heard a distinctive crunch. He pulled a familiar white slip from underneath his bottom. GO ON IN! SHE'S WAITING FOR YOU! With a great feeling of foreboding, Mulder heavily dragged his feet out of the car, and looked up to see that the building was actually Scully's apartment complex. "Aw, shit." ******************************** February 14, 1999 2:00 am Scully woke up on the couch with the TV on. She lazily stretched and turned it off. Changing into her cozy periwinkle silk pajamas, she spied a familiar brown object neatly wrapped in a cellophane wrapping next to her purse. She walked over and numbly opened it. DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE WAY YOU LOOK RIGHT NOW, HE'LL LOVE IT ANYWAY. As soon as she finished reading it, she heard the same loud knock that could only be made by one person. "Scully, it's me." She opened the door cautiously, and Mulder walked in. He advanced towards her, ignoring the imploring looks she was giving him, and gathered her in his arms, smoothing her slightly tousled hair. "Scully, I..." She looked up into his eyes and lightly traced the trail of a tear with her fingertip. He sighed, as if a weight were being lifted off his shoulders. "...love you." They leaned in to a kiss, and Scully chuckled as she felt tiny cookie crumbs dance across her cheek. "What?" "Oh, I just thought it strange that of all the things we've been through together, it took a few cookies to truly bring us together." Mulder smiled. "I told you it was a sign." ********************************************************** February 15, 1999 Chang's Kitchen "Phew! We can finally get rid of these cheesy fortune cookies." "Yeah. I wonder who really bought into them." "Mmm-hmm. Now, tell me again why we had to get gender-specific cookies?" The busy restaurant continued to bustle, but across town, two people were drowsily waking up in each other's arms, starting the first day of their new life together, souls entwined forever. End! Now, that was a piece of BadFic, wasn't it? It's my first one, EVER...send feedback, please. Make it as harsh as you want. I'm a sadist. >:)
