[1.beginnings]

She's never been the type to dwell on bitterness
but Mulder's mistrust has left a taste in her
mouth she can't shake. His voice is tinny and
faraway over the cell phone receiver, his tone
dripping with afterthought. He's been gone
without a word for five days, leaving her to
wonder and wait. Leaving her to fear the worst.

Scully breathes through pursed lips, her heart
pounding with fury. His words become garbled
as the blood rushes through her ears -- all she
hears are the waves of a raging sea.

She's been silent too long. "Scully, can you
hear me?"

Her throat is raw. It's hard to force the words
out. "I'm here."

He continues, not knowing she's drowning in
her anger. Or maybe he doesn't care. This
thought calms her and a shore is reached
inside Scully's heart. She pulls herself onto
solid land and her pulse slows. If he doesn't
care, then neither do I.

*I simply don't care.*

It's the beginning of the end.

[2.partners]

Scully's been spending more time away at the
lab, Mulder notices.

Her demeanor hasn't changed, not all that
much. She seems calmer, less prone to
argument and for a while, that suits him just fine.
She listens and nods. She shrugs and hands in
her findings in a timely manner.

She's the perfect partner.

It's not until a month has passed that Mulder
realizes she's left him, in ways both subtle and
profound.

Her blue eyes are shaded, her voice colorless.
She runs on automatic in his presence and the
panic creeps up his spine like a spider. He's
broken something and like a child he can only
understand what he's lost now that it's gone.

She's there, but she's not his partner anymore.

[3.regret]

Their fight begins out of nowhere. Something
about a missing file or a lost contact, definitely
not about the rift that's grown between them
over the course of the past few months.

No, there's no rift, we are what we've always
been.

They just can't seem to figure out anymore what
exactly that was.

"I'm sorry," Mulder says, desperately grasping
at straws. "I'm not the person you want me to
be. I know that. But I trust you, you have to
believe that."

"I don't have to believe anything," she snaps
back and there's sorrow then, at Mulder's
startled hurt. "What I mean ..."

"I know what you mean." He looks lost ...
abandoned. "And I agree."

A wall cracks. And regret, raw and hot and
painful like a knife cuts through the soft parts of
her heart.

[4.sex]

They reach a truce on a summer's evening,
staring out over a field where a man's gone
missing, disappeared into a bright, otherworldly
light.

The moon is full, throwing their shadows across
blades of tall grass, turning them into giants.
She turns to speak to him but words fail her. It's
easier to pull him down against her, to take his
lips and wrap her body around his, winding all
their hurts together.

Breathless, they lay down, the ground hard and
scratching against their skin. Scully's anger
flies free, taking Mulder's sorrow with it. She
gasps his name against his mouth, he swallows
her moans and she stares up at the sky as he
fucks her, the stars swirling in waves.

The war is over. This is who they are and will
always be, the pain be damned.

Together.
