Four Words MOUNT SINAI HOSPITAL MIAMI, FLORIDA 1:30 a.m. Dana Scully stood in the hallway outside Fox Mulder's hospital room, watchin g him sleep, listening to him breathe. She looked at his lips -- the lips that hours ago said the four words that c hanged her world. "Scully, I love you." She told herself over and over again that he was probably on so many drugs a t the time that he didn't know what he was saying. Nor would he remember th e next day what he said or what SHE said. (What the hell was SHE thinking when she told him "Oh brother") After his fateful words were uttered, Scully went back to her hotel room. S he treated herself to the tiny bottle of Vodka and small can of V-8 from the refrigerator's wet bar, made herself a Bloody Mary, grabbed the remote cont rol and tried to take her mind off Mulder by watching television. It didn't work. Hell, it made it worse. She watched a rerun of "Who's the Boss," and grimaced at how life imitated a rt -- two people saw each other everyday and loved each other deeply but, be cause of work situations, didn't dare tell the other one how they felt. Until an hour ago. "Scully, I love you." Scully grabbed the remote control off the nightstand and pressed the power b utton harder than necessary. Convinced that a hot shower would make her forget her partner's declaration,= Scully stripped out of her suit, headed into the bathroom, grabbed a bleach ed white towel that hadn't seen fabric softener in years, and got under a ho t stream of water. That didn't help either. She imagined Mulder in the shower with her, standing behind her. Naked. Hi s bare chest pressed against her back, and his hard cock pressed into her th igh. Scully felt him rubbing his hands over the parts of her body that she was washing -- touching some places with just his fingertips, grasping other places with his long, strong fingers. Scully quickly turned off the hot water, stayed under the cold for a few mom ents, and then realized the brisk sensation did nothing to sway her romantic thoughts. Romantic? Bullshit. Just downright horny, she told herself. Afterwards, she tried getting some sleep, but that proved futile also. As s he tossed and turned in bed, her mind repeated those words like a scratched record. "Scully, I love you." "Scully, I love you." "Scully, I love you." How did he mean it, she wondered. As a colleague? As a friend? Or as a wo man, the way she wanted him to love her. When the clock on the nightstand told her that she had spent the last two ho urs wrestling with her sheets, she realized that there was only one thing to do. She got dressed, this time in a light blue tee shirt and blue jeans, a nd headed back to the hospital. And now she stood in the hallway outside Fox Mulder's hospital room. Watchi ng him sleep. Listening to him breathe. Scully read his chart that she had taken from the unmanned nurses station. His medications weren't as high as to make him delirious and mutter nonsense comments. Had he had just enough medication, though, to eliminate his inhibitions and tell her what had been in his heart, but previously dare not tell her? And if that were the case, what ran through his head when she disregarded his he art-felt confession? Maybe he meant it in the romantic sense, Scully pondered. He waited until t he others left the room to tell her. If he was delirious, he would have not only told Scully that he loved her in front of Skinner and the Gunman, but probably would have confessed his love for them too. Scully walked into Mulder's room quietly, watching him carefully, making sur e she didn't wake him. She noticed a bruise starting to develop under his left eye. Scully thought that he must have hit something in the water, maybe the side of his charter ed boat. She leaned over and gently pressed her lips to the colored area. Scully smiled at her partner, happy that she was finally going to tell him w hat had been in her heart for years. The fact that Mulder wasn't awake to h ear it was just a technicality. She gently ran her fingers through his hair and whispered in his ear, "I love you too, Mulder." She kissed his bruise again, and then turned to leave his room, eager to get Mulder's medical chart back to the nurses station before anyone returned. Scully had almost gotten to the door when she heard a familiar voice call to her. "Scully?" She turned around to see Mulder propped up on one elbow.
