Pendrell, Scully, Kersh, and Mulder are all property of Chris Carter and 1013 blah blah blah. Agent Angel is mine. Hands off! I got the idea for this fanfic from the beginning of Max, when dear old Pendrell got shot and died. I dedicate this in the memory of Pendrell, for he would live on. "Another rainy afternoon in Washington DC. Tomorrow, there might be a chanc-" Scully turned off the radio. thought Scully. She looked out the windshield. The rain made those splats, the sound she was so familiar to. She turned off her car and got out. She got her umbrella and a bouquet out of the backseat. She had trouble opening her umbrella "Open, come on." she said through clenched teeth. It popped open. She locked her car, grabbed the bouquet on top of the car, and headed up the hill. It was a few days after her birthday. She was at Arlington National cemetery visiting a dead friend. The third year of his death. It was finally getting to her. When she arrived at the grave she was visiting, she wiped a tear away. She put the bouquet down and sighed. She stared at the name etched on the grave, Agent Pendrell. She dropped her head for a silent memorial. She felt a hand on her shoulder, Mulder's. He put down the bouquet he had next to hers. "You'll be fine Scully." said Mulder with a soothing tone. "Maybe, maybe not. His death is finally getting to me." sighed Scully. Mulder's head bobbed like those bobbing head dolls. Scully snickered. "What?" "Your head, you look like those bobbing head dolls." "That's comforting, I didn't get my coffee." "Yeah, you can't live with out your coffee." Scully spun around and headed back to her car. Mulder had a hurt look on his face, but Scully didn't notice. When they both arrived at their cars, Scully got in hers and rolled down the window. "See you tomorrow, Mulder." she said. Mulder was fumbling with his keys, trying to get the door open. He looked up and said the same. On the way home Scully was thinking about random things all at once. But she was mostly thinking of Pendrell. she thought. A swim of emotions, a soft grin, the science blabber. The doofy feeling, microscope, the white lab coat. The scent of alcohol on his breath, the sound of a gunshot, raspy breathing. It all had to end, why? He never really hurt anybody, just a kind gentle soul. Scully started to cry. When she got home, she crawled into bed, and curled up into a ball. A presence was felt in the room. She grabbed at her crufix nervously. A breeze slightly blew in, with a light scent of Pendrell. Scully drifted off to sleep. She was hit with a sudden cold. She looked up, miles and miles of frozen landscape. Snow blew lightly, but sped up when a light appeared in front of her. Two figures came out of the light. One looked like about under Mulder's height, the second one was her size. The smaller one was walking towards her. Scully shuddered in the cold, nightgown flapping in the wind. The smallest one was right in front of her. It looked up into her eyes, and took her hand. It was a female with chin-length medium brown hair and the most shockingly blue eyes. She put a small silver necklace with a beautiful angel charm on it. "You can come to me tomorrow morning and give it back." said the female in a milky voice. Scully nodded, and the female turned around and started to walk back towards the taller figure, back into the light. Scully ran towards them, but they faded out before she could get to them. She fell to her knees, into the snow, and saw a watch glistening. She picked it up and recognized it. "Pen......" Scully trailed off as the snow blowed faster around her. Scully woke up. A dream. Aah, the cold. Scully shivered as she got out of bed. The angel necklace was dangling from her fingers, and the watch was on her left hand. She put the necklace on, and opened the blinds. There was now out there, lots of it. "Ohh." giggled Scully. She felt like a child when they see snow and they don't have to go to school. Her phone rang. The machine picked it up. "Hey Scully, it's Mulder. Did you see the snow already? Well, Kersh said we still have to come in for work. See you soon." The machine beeped. Her child feeling faded away, so much for fun. Scully ran through the snow and people passing by at the FBI headquarters. She brushed herself off while waiting for the elevator. While riding up, she talked a moment with a security guard making his rounds. When Scully got to her desk, Mulder popped up with another one of his "announcements." "What is is Mulder?" said Scully tiredly. "There's a new agent at Pendrell's old stomping grounds." said Mulder mockingly in the same tone. "Who?" "We can head down now and go meet her." "Ok, let's go." Scully and Mulder walked in silence up to the Forensics lab. When the tow of them arrived up in the lab, a female got up and walked towards them. Scully looked at the new agent and gasped. The female in her dream. "I'm Mulder, and this is Scully." introduced Mulder. Scully wasn't moving. "I'm Angel, if you'd call me by my last name like you two do." said the new agent. "Scully? Scully?" Mulder waved a hand in front of her face. "Hello?" Scully snapped back into action. "Oh sorry, I got distracted for a moment. Nice to meet you Angel." said Scully. She shook Angel's hand, and looked up at Mulder, who was looking dreamily at Angel. Scully sighed, grabbed Mulder's coat, and dragged him out of the lab. "Mulder?" she said in a sexy voice to get his attention. "Yes?" he said back in the same kind of voice. "Wake up." "Have I smelled the coffee yet?" Scully mumbled under her breath and walked off. They met again in the cafeteria for lunch. "Mulder, for the last time, shut up." said Scully over her sandwich. Mulder was yammering on and on about the snow and Angel. Scully wanted to throw her orange at him. She got up, and waved goodbye at Mulder. "Hey, where are you going?" he asked. "Away from you and your 500 a mile a minute mouth." she said irrated. "Ok, bye bye." Scully headed towards the exit. She ran into Angel. The remainder of her lunch fell out of her hands. "Oh Sorry, Agent Scully. I wasn't looking where I was going." apologized Angel. She picked up Scully's lunch and gave it back to her. "Thanks. It's all right. I was trying to get away from Mulder, and I wasn't paying attention either." said Scully. Angel's eyes drifted towards Scully's crufix and the angel necklace. "Meet me on the staircase between floors 3 and 4 after one." "Why?" Angel walked towards Mulder's table with a please look on her face. Around one, Scully headed to the staircase where Angel told her to go. She sat down on the steps to wait. A few moments later, Angel came up the stairs on the third floor, and sat down next to her. "You had the dream?" said Angel. "Yeah." answered Scully. "The watch and my necklace has given you protection from harm." "What?" "You'll find out later in the week. Can I have my necklace back please?" Scully removed the angel necklace and put it in Angel's hand. "See you tomorrow." Angel got up and left. Scully sat confused on the steps. Earlier on Scully's birthday; Angel sat atop of the FBI HQ. Pendrell was sitting next to her. They were dangling their feet at the passing people below. Angel was singing. "Dead to the world, how I wonder why, all I have to do, is make the match with another identity." sang Angel. Pendrell clapped. "I'm gonna miss you when you're gone." said Pendrell. "I'm not gonna "GO," I'm gonna do the "thing" I'm being sent down for, Penny." answered Angel. "For the last time, I told you not to call me Penny!" Angel laughed. "Penny, oh Penny!" Pendrell hit Angel on the arm. "Why can't you call me by my first name?" "Because it sounds like I'm belching." Pendrell laughed, then stopped suddenly. "Hey!" Angel laughed. "Anyway........I'll miss you man." "Yeah, I love you man!!" "This will be fun!" "Yep, yep, yep." "I'm glad I'm doing this for you, Pendrell." "I know. Thank you." "You're gonna get that chance, no matter what." "Yes, I will." "Let me tell you something Pend." "What?" "Life is like a merry go round. It goes around and around, you'll never know when it's going to stop and your time's up. There's always that brass ring, you try to get it for good fortune. Each time you try go grab it, you think you'll have it this time. You miss it, but to try again. You keep trying to grab it, you always miss. You know deep inside you'll get it sometime. Your hopes are up, knowing you'll grab it sooner or later. By me going down, you'll grab that brass ring now." Pendrell sniffled. "That's so touching, Angel. Thanks." Angel put her arm around him and gave him a squeeze. "Let me do my little thing." She got up and put a trench coat on. "All right, let me see it." "Scully's the love of your life! Sadly, you got shot before you could tell her how you feel about her," Angel put her hands on Pendrell's cheeks, looking into his eyes. "and you send me, your best friend, to give you that chance." Angel plopped back down. Pendrell smiled sweetly at Angel. They sat there, savoring the time as it went by. "I have to ask you for one more thing." "What is is?" "Can you get Mulder to like you?" Pendrell's head dropped. "Yeah I guess." "Thanks, Angel." "I will because here we are. Both dead, sitting on the top of the FBI HQ. I've known you since forever. I want you to be happy, so I'm heading down, for you to get that chance with your biggest crush yet," Angel brought his face up to hers. "I promise you that you'll get that chance with Scully. Honest." She kissed him lightly on the cheek. Current day: Scully was doing yet another boring background check. Just as she hung up the phone, she put her head down to get some rest. She was looking into the window of the lab. Pendrell sat in his usual place, and Mulder walked by her. Scully tried to get Mulder's attention, but her hand went through him. Mulder entered the lab and Pendrell looked up. His face fell when Scully wasn't with Mulder. "Where's Scully?" he asked nervously. "She had a date." answered Mulder. Pendrell started to fidget with his tie. Mulder put his hands on Pendrell's shoulders. "Relax, it's with a dead man." Scully heard a voice calling her name. Scully woke up. "What?" she said sleepily. "Scully, you tired? Need to go home?" said Mulder. "Umm, yeah. I didn't sleep well last night." That was a lie. Mulder nodded, while she gathered up her things. When Scully arrived home, she opened up her laptop to find out a little more about Angel. Right when Scully was going to open the file, she dozed off. Another dream. She was sitting on the trunk of a car. She looked around, it was a parking garage. Elevator doors opened to the left. Scully's eyes darted over to the elevator. A woman walked out. Scully gasped. It was Angel. She looked at the watch, and it stated that it was around the exact time Pendrell was shot. Her eyes followed Angel. A black car came up behind Angel with its lights off. Angel looked nervously behind her, then started to run. The car's lights came on and it picked up speed, chasing Angel. The car hit Angel with a sickening thud. Angel went over the fender, crashed into the windshield, fell off the back of the car, and finally landed on the concrete. Scully hopped off the trunk and ran towards Angel. Angel was hurt, bad. She look her last breaths as Scully fell to her knees next to her. Scully snapped awake. thought Scully. She closed her laptop and crawled into bed. She fell back to sleep. Scully was standing in a pitch black room. A tiny light went on above her head. Scully realized it started to warm up. A figure came out of the shadows. The figure lit a cigarette, and the flame made his face easy to see. It was Cigarette-Smoking Man. He dropped the still-lit match on the floor, and a fiery circle lit up around her. The flames leaped, Scully became scared. Out of the shadows, more people came. They all circled around the ring of fire. They drew their guns and aimed them at Scully. "Ahh, Dr. Scully. I finally have you now." said CSM. "No you don't." said a voice from the shadows. Scully tried to wake up. At last she did, but she could still see the fire. She shook in fear, and a pair of arms wrapped around her. There was someone next to her, she could feel him. "I won't let them get you Scully." said the person holding her. He recognized the voice, Pendrell's. Scully woke with a start to her alarm going off. She rolled over and turned it off. She moaned, oh the pain. she thought. She got out of bed, but she fell back down again because she was so dizzy and her balance wasn't good. Her cell phone was ringing. She flopped over and picked it up. "Scully." she said weakly. "Where are you?" said Mulder on the other line. "I'm at home. I'm not feeling well." "Do you want me to send Angel over?" "Yeah, sure." "Ok, hope you get better." Mulder hung up. Scully turned off her phone and put it back on the nightstand. She noticed a letter that wasn't there when she picked up the cell phone. She took the letter in her hands, opened it, and started to read what it said. Dear Scully, Every night I lay awake thinking about you. since the first time I laid eyes on you, I fell in love. I've never felt this way before, not even towards a coworker. Simple enough, it seems, but it actually isn't. Life became hard, the only relief I had was the sight of you. I was always crushed when I saw you with Mulder. I thought of my chances, but I had none. Almost every time, I couldn't control myself around you. I've got it bad, I know. I brought my death upon myself, I shouldn't have drank. I still hate myself over that. I stepped into the lie of fire and took the bullet. I didn't want you to get hurt, I took it for you. Thank you for being there and telling me to breathe. I understand that you had to go chase after that guy who shot me, I was going to die anyway. My chance with you was now long gone. I sucked it in and let go. Nothing could have been done to save me, you tried your best. I was reunited with my best friend at the pearly gates. It was good to see her again, she has been a help to me. Recently, my chance has been available. I'm back, and my best friend is trying her best to get me that chance. She knows how much I care for you, she's among the living at the HQ. She'll be here to talk to you, listen well to her. I've been waiting so long, and let love take its toll. From Pendrell, with love When Scully finished the letter, she was in tears. When she looked up, Angel was standing in the doorway. "It's true isn't it?" said Scully between sobs. "Yeah, it is." said Angel. She walked over and sat down next to Scully. "I guess I have to explain." "Please." "I'm Pendrell's best friend. We knew each other since kindergarten when he stole my cookies during snack time." Scully laughed. "He did that?" "Yeah. We became friends after that. We still look back and laugh about it. We stayed friends all through school, all the way up to college. We got the same Advanced Degree. After we graduated, we each went out separate ways." "What did you go off to do?" "I worked with the cancer team at the CDC. We worked to find cures for cancer. Years and years we worked hard, then I finally found a cure to one type of cancer." "What kind?" Scully fingered her neck. "Yours. I met a lot of women who had chips in their necks taken out. I headed out to find a cure, and I did." "Did it work?" "Very well. I tested it on a removed tumor. It passed, and I was going to begin treatment on an agent at the FBI. AD Skinner came to me and asked for my help. I had to wait until she got back from an assignment with a crashed airplane. It was you Scully." "Ohh, why didn't I get the treatment?" "I was killed. Those guys didn't want me to expose them because of their cancer." "I had a dream last night. I watched your death." "I know." "You got killed around the same time Pendrell got shot." "Yeah, I met him up at the pearly gates. The saddest way to retinue." "I read in the letter that you'll be coming down." "Yep. I'm here to get Pendrell his chance to finally love you. Will you let him have his long awaited chance?" "Yes, I will." "Thank you so much. You're much better now. I'll drive you back to work. Go get ready." Scully smiled and got out of bed. Pendrell sat on the ledge waiting for Angel to come back. He sighed. Did Angel seal the deal? I hope. He remembered the smell of her hair when she got close to him. His palms always sweated when she did that. There was that time when he almost dropped the test tube when Scully brushed up to him. The calm soothing voice of hers telling him to breathe. I should have kept breathing and spit out the blood in my lungs. His head dropped down and he looked at the agents passing below. Why? Why have I done this? Why did I have to drink on that night of all nights? He shook his head and choked back tears. He felt a hand on his shoulder, so he looked up. It was Angel. She sat down next to him and hugged him. He cried on her shoulder. After Pendrell calmed down, he asked her. "So?" he said, full of the suspense. "Yes." Angel said, a grin spread across her face. He hugged her, happily. Scully sat down at her desk. Mulder tapped on his desk, and she turned around. "Scully's back!!" he said. "Yeah." said Scully. "Oh man, I HAVE to get her chicken soup! It did miracles for you!" "Yes. Mulder, your phone is ringing." Mulder yelped and picked up the phone. Back at the roof, Angel asked Pendrell the burning question. "So what's your first move going to be?" she asked. "I have no idea." he answered. "Pendrell!!!!" "What?" "You've been waiting forever for this and you don't know what to do?" "Yes. I'm not a master at love like you are." "You want my help?" "Yeah." "Ok. You gotta look the way she sees you back when you were alive. You gotta have wine, charm her. Use your love talent thing. Catch up on the things after your death. Make your move at the right time. We don't want it to be too late or early. Also, it has to be "the kiss" the one where you'll make her feel tingly all over. Then let it take it's course." Pendrell leaned forward too far and ended up in Angel's lap. Angel put a hand on his head and stroked his hair. "I'm worried Angel. I might not get her going." "You have nothing to worry about. You'll do fine." "Thanks." "While you're at Scully's, I'm going to be here to talk to Mulder." "Don't tell him about me and Scully." "I won't." Scully shut down her computer and said goodbye to Mulder. On the way out, she ran into Angel. They smiled and kept walking. Angel turned towards Pendrell in a dark corner, signaling him that Scully has left the building. Angel started walking again, heading to the office to talk to Mulder. Scully threw her coat on the table and got a glass from the cupboard. She filled it up with water and sat at the table. When she was about to take a sip, the doorbell rang. The glass slipped through her fingers and shattered on the floor. She quickly got up, but tripped on the chair and her left hand got cut on a piece of glass. She brought her hand up to her mouth and got up. On the way to the door, she grabbed a towel and put pressure on her cut. Scully opened the door to see Pendrell in his work clothes, all the way down to the lab coat. He even looked like he came all the way here from work. He had a bottle of wine in his hand. "Pendrell?" asked Scully. Pendrell nodded. "It's me." he answered. Scully threw her arms around him. "I got your letter and talked to Angel." They walked to the kitchen, and Pendrell noticed the towel on her hand. He took her hand and removed the towel. "Did you cut yourself?" "I dropped a glass." "Sit down. I'll take care of it." He pushed her gently into a chair. He set the wine on the table and took the towel to the sink. He ran the towel under the water, then wringed it out. He walked back over to Scully and wrapped it around her left hand. "Thanks." she said. He sat down next to her. "You're welcome." he said. Scully's eyes drifted away. He got up. Scully looked at him. She got up too. They went over to the living room and sat on the couch. Scully and Pendrell stayed in the living room for a few hours, catching up. "You're kidding." giggled Scully. "Nope, it actually happened." answered Pendrell. "Ohh, we must have covered every topic tonight." An awkward silence. Pendrell scooted closer to Scully. She looked at him, into his comforting hazel eyes. His hands inched up to her face, her eyes followed them. He cradled her face in his hands, and moved in slowly for a kiss. He kissed her lightly, soft and sweet. When he broke away, Scully gasped. She ran her hands up his back as he kissed her again. they both thought. Pendrell held her close, she was shaking a little. He slid a hand under her blouse, his touch delicate, leaving Scully breathless. Hands wandered, clothes came off, and the kisses were to die for. There was a feeling deep inside Pendrell, he wanted to leave an impression with her. As morning dawned on, Pendrell and Scully lay in each other's arms. The alarm clock went off, and they both had to go. They embraced for one last kiss, and a goodbye. Scully went to take her shower. Pendrell put his clothes back on and let himself out of her apartment. On Angel's lunch break, Pendrell met up with Angel again on the roof. "How did it go?" Angel asked when she sat down. "Ohhhhh." answered Pendrell. "You HAVE to tell me every juicy detail." Scully sat at her desk with a grin on her face. Mulder noticed it right away. "Hey Scully, did a salesman come by and give you encyclopedias last night?" Mulder asked. "No, no encyclopedias, just the lab guy." answered Scully. Mulder was confused. A week later, Scully had one last revezndous with Pendrell. On Angel's last day, Pendrell waited on the roof so they could head back. Angel stood in front of Scully's desk. "Hey Scully?" Angel asked. "What?" said Scully as she looked up. "We're heading back. Pendrell and I. You want to come up to the roof and say goodbye?" "Sure." Scully went with Angel up to the roof. When they got up there, Pendrell was sitting on the ledge. "Penny!!" said Angel in a mocking tone. He looked up and saw Scully standing next to Angel. "Uhhhh........what?" he stuttered. "She came to say good bye." "Oh." Pendrell got up and walked towards Scully. He wrapped his arms around her and kissed her farewell. "Goodbye Scully." "Good bye Pendrell." He let her go and walked with Angel to the ledge. Scully waved good bye to both of them. She heard music faintly, it was Goo Goo Dolls' Iris song from City of Angels. "I'll be here when you need me!!!" shouted Pendrell over the strong wind blowing. In a flash of light, Angel and Pendrell were gone. Scully brushed her hair back and headed back downstairs.
