Category: VA (Death of a character)
Rating: G (Nothing bad)

Summary: Takes place in the near future, where one agent pays a visit to a
lost friend, and fellow agent.

This idea came to me while listening to the Offspring's new single,
"Gone Away." It just seemed to fit Mulder's thoughts if he had lost
Scully to the cancer she's suffering from. I tried to put it aside, but
couldn't get it out of mind, so here it is. Enjoy! :)

Gone Away
***************

The hands gripped the steering wheel tightly, the eyes stare
straight ahead at the road. One of the hands flips on the radio, and
hearing the strains of a familar alternative song, the driver raises the
volume whose lyrics seem to echo the sorrowful thoughts of the person.

"Maybe in another life
I could find you there
Pulled away before your time
I can't deal it's so unfair

And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven's so far away
And it feels
Yeah it feels like
The world has grown cold
Now that you've gone away

Leaving flowers on your grave
Show that I still care
But black roses and Hail Mary's
Can't bring back what's taken from me
I reach to the sky
And call out your name
And if I could trade
I would

And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven's so far away
And it stings
Yeah it stings now
The world is so cold
Now that you've gone away
Gone away
Gone away..."

As the last strains of the song faded, the driver brushed away the tears
streaming down from his hazel eyes. He turn the car down the now
familar turn off into the cemetary. He parked the car, and stepped out,
grabbing the bouquet off the seat next to him as he did so. The flowers
in his shaking hands, he approached the gravestone. "

"Dana Katherine Scully," with her birthdate and date of death
underneath. That's it. Very short and simple. No account of her work
with the FBI and with the X-Files. Nothing on how important she was,
especially to her partner, Special Agent Fox Mulder. If her mother
had around she would have wanted something added, but she came
completely unhinged after Scully's death, the only family she had
left. Mulder had been sent away, deliberately, he now suspects, on a
distant case while Scully had laid dying, and wasn't informed till
after her funeral.

The tears still streamed down his stricken face as he gently
placed the bouquet upon the grave, and removed the old wilted bouquet
from the week before. He tries to come here once a week, to pay his
respect, and remember his partner, and his friend. No, she was more
than just a friend even, she was his only support at times, the only one
he could trust completely, even more than Skinner, she was the only one who
could keep him sane through all the difficult cases and problems they faced
together. Together, that what was wrong, he had become used to her always
being around. For her to always be there for him. In the back of his
mind, he feared losing her, though he knew it was inevitable. There had
been numerous times when he almost did, on many dangerous cases. But he
never imagined something so ordinary, so common could take her away from
him like this. Though in this case the cancer arrived under strange and
very unordinary cicumstances, it still claimed her. Another victim lost in
his endless search for the truth.

"Forgive me, Scully." he said softly, "I never wanted this to
happen to you. If there was only some way, that I could have taken your
place..." He stood up, dried his eyes, and turned away to leave. As he
left the dismal spot, the lines from the song seemed to ring in his mind,
as he looked to the heavens for an answer.

"I reach to the sky
And call out your name
And if I could trade
I would

And it feels
And it feels like
Heaven's so far away
And it stings
Yeah it stings now
The world is so cold
Now that you've gone away"

"I miss you Dana" he said, walked over to the car, got in the
car, and drove away.

And a reply carried quietly on the wind, a reply from a female
voice saying, "And I miss you, Fox."
