FBI Headquarters
Mon 9 Oct 1996
2:01 PM

"Well, Mulder, what did you find this time?" Scully asks, closing the
door behind her. Mulder looks up from his desk, the expression on his
face revealing excitement.

"I've got a game I want you to play," he says, getting up. He reaches
behind her to shut off the lights. "I found these pictures in an x-file
and I want you to tell me what you see that's different in them."

Scully crosses her arms impatiently as Mulder turns on the slide
projector. A picture of two, young men flashes in front of them, their
eighties attire obviously outdated. One of the men is very attractive,
his dark brown hair and dark brown eyes quite alluring to Scully. The
other guy has dirty blonde-to-light brown hair, kind of long-ish. His
acid-washed denim jacket causes Scully to smile which Mulder notices.

"It's the jean jacket, isn't it?" Mulder guesses. Scully laughs.

"I remember having one of those," Scully replies.

"I had one, too. Use to wear my acid-washed jean jacket with my
acid-washed jeans," Mulder says, "I thought I was really cool back then.
Now, here's the other picture."

Mulder switches to the next slide. The two same men are in the slide,
looking exactly as they did in the previous slide except for a change of
clothes. The handsome, dark-haired man is wearing a preppy v-neck
sweater vest over a black t-shirt and the other guy is wearing a simple
white t-shirt. Scully steps closer to the projected picture, her eyes
carefully scrutinizing the image.

"So, what differences did you catch?" Mulder asks, his voice eager for an
answer.

"Except for their clothes," Scully says over her shoulder, trying hard to
locate other differences, "the two men look exactly the same, hairstyle
and all."

Mulder smiles, satisfied.

"What would you say if I told you these pictures were taken 10 years
apart?" Mulder asks. Scully looks at him, his question not surprising
her a bit.

"What difference does that make?" Scully responds, a little annoyed at
Mulder's game. "Are you playing a joke on me?"

"Scully, I am not playing a joke," Mulder answers, frustrated. He flips
back to the other picture. "Look closely at their faces." He flips to
the other the slide. "Now look at their faces in this one. See how it
appears they haven't aged a bit?"

Exasperated, Scully walks back to door and flips the light switch up.

"This is ridiculous, Mulder," Scully says, "Please get to the point. Who
are these guys?"

Mulder turns towards Scully.

"The one with the lighter hair and fashionable jean jacket is Officer
Doug Penhall," Mulder answers, "The brooding, dark-haired rebellion is
Officer Tom Hanson. The two of them belong to an undercover operation in
New York called 'Jump Street'. The operation works primarily in high
schools and consists of these two men, plus an Officer Judy Hoffs and an
Officer Harry Ioki. They are lead by a Captain Fuller."

"Okay," Scully says, waiting to hear more.

"Don't you get it?" Mulder asks. "These guys work undercover in high
schools. In high schools! The first slide I showed you was of them when
they first started in the operation, when they were in their mid- to late
twenties. The second, most current picture of them was taken ten years
later. They haven't aged a bit! How is it that these guys can still
work undercover in high schools?"

Scully looks directly into Mulder's eyes. Her mind is working. She
tries to find a logical explanation.

"You know as well as I do that some people don't reveal their true ages
like others," Scully responds. "Perhaps these two men, as well as the
other officers in the group, have been blessed with luck. Or maybe they
use those wrinkle creams."

"Scully, you know those wrinkle creams haven't been scientifically proven
to erase wrinkles," Mulder says, shaking his head.

"Well," Scully says defensively, "I still don't see what you're trying to
get at by showing these two pictures of two men with the observation that
they look as if they haven't aged a bit."

Mulder shuts off the projector. He sits behind his desk. Scully is now
standing in front of him, her arms still crossed.

"Explain this to me, then," Mulder says, his eyes challenging Scully's.
"This 'Jump Street' organization only operates in a designated area of
New York. Like I said earlier, their main assignments are in high
schools. How has this same group of four officers been able to work
undercover in high schools located near each other for ten-plus years,
without being recognized by students and school staff? Wouldn't you
think that over a span of ten years, these officers' identities would've
been discovered by somebody? Why haven't any new officers taken their
places?"

"Wonderfully deceiving disguises?" Scully suggests, sitting in the chair
across from Mulder, "Very well-planned strategies? An extremely careful
organization that makes all precautions when it comes to socializing with
high school students and administration?"

Mulder throws his head dramatically into his arms resting on his desk.

"Scully, Scully, Scully," Mulder groans into the desk, "Doesn't this all
seem strange to you?"

"Mulder, I'm not saying this 'Jump Street' organization's ability to
thrive with the same group of people for over ten years isn't strange,"
Scully says, "But I think they're continuous success can be logically
explained."

Mulder sits straight up again, a smile on his face, and pulls a drawer
open. In his hands, he flashes two plane tickets.

"Whatever the case, Skinner needs a group to go out and make sure the
operation is still legit. And I made sure we got the case," Mulder
replies.

"So, Skinner knows there's an x-file on 'Jump Street'?" Scully asks.

"No, not yet. But I'm sure he'll be happy to know."

"How were you able to get him to give us the case then?"

"Told him I was quite interested in learning about an organization that
works undercover exclusively in high schools, where young people are
extremely impressionable," Mulder answers, "Also, I told him I wanted the
chance to investigate, if there's extra time of course, the mysterious
popularity of those Broadway musicals."

Scully shakes her head as she raises her eyebrow into a perfect arch.

Highway In NYC
Tues 10 Oct 1996
10:32 AM

"So how did Captain Fuller sound on the phone?" Scully asks, glancing
over at Mulder. Mulder sits behind the rented car's steering wheel,
ascertaining the location of Jump Street headquarters.

"Seemed like a pretty nice guy," Mulder answers, "He didn't sound at all
worried that the FBI is coming over to check out his organization."

Scully studies the other cars passing by them. The highway appears
extremely busy, filled with people on the go. One car rudely cuts them
off, shouting obscenities outside of the window.

"No wonder most New Yorkers don't bother driving around," Scully says, as
Mulder mumbles under his breath and changes to the slow lane.

"You're telling me," Mulder replies, spotting the correct exit. He turns
into the exit, nearly getting hit by a speeding car behind him that is
also exiting. "You better get off of my ass, mister."

Scully looks anxiously into the side view mirror, noting how close the
car behind them tailgates. Fortunately, the rude driver makes a left
turn at the light while Mulder and Scully turn right.

The surroundings are quite mundane, warehouses, both fully operating and
abandoned, at every block. Mulder expertly turns left and right, his
eyes searching for the correct address.

"Mulder, it's right over there," Scully says, pointing to the left. The
warehouse in which Jump Street headquarters operates looks as if it is
still in use, dark, dirty smoke emanating from pipes fixed atop the roof.
A metal staircase zig zags up alongside the warehouse. The parking lot
is nearly empty. The overcast sky only adds to the completely morose
sight.

"Cheery place, isn't it?" Mulder asks as he parks the car next to an old,
blue Mustang.

"It certainly is," Scully answers as the two of them get out of the car.
The cold air pierces their lungs. Mulder shoves his hands into the
pockets of his trench coat and Scully blows warm air into her hands.
Mulder surveys the warehouse.

"Captain Fuller said the entrance is near that staircase," Mulder says.
The two approach the building, wanting desperately to escape the cold
air. The metal door looks as if it hasn't been opened in years. Mulder
pulls the door open, the heaviness squeezing a grunt out of him. "Ladies
first."

Scully looks at Mulder, her eyes wide. She walks carefully, slowly down
the entrance.

"Mulder, why is it so darn dark in here?"

"I'm sure it's safe. If you want, I'll go get our trusty flashlights
from the car," Mulder suggests, holding the door slightly open behind
them.

"No, I think I see a light ahead," Scully says, her eyes hungry for a
clear picture. As they approach the light, Scully jumps slightly as she
sees a figure standing in the shadows. Mulder, also seeing the figure,
instinctively reaches for his gun.

"Agent Scully? Agent Mulder?" the friendly voice asks.

"Yes?" Mulder responds, his hand still resting on his gun. The two
continue to approach the figure cautiously and recognize the face of the
man immediately, his image having been studied by both of them.

"I'm Officer Penhall," the man says, his crooked, warm smile welcoming
them, "We've been expecting you."

Jump Street Headquarters
Tues 10 Oct 1996
11:05 AM
Inside the main office area of Jump Street headquarters, Mulder and
Scully are surprised at how different this part of the warehouse is from
the rest. They follow Officer Penhall to presumably Captain Fuller's
office. Many people surround them, standing behind counters, sitting
behind desks, talking on phones, flipping through files in file
cabinets. The number of cars parked in the lot was quite deceiving.
The noise of a busy office fills the air. Big windows allow whatever
natural light getting through the dark clouds to enter.

"Officer Penhall, from the outside, I would've never guessed how chaotic
and lively it would be inside," Mulder says to Officer Penhall's back.
He studies the many people, hoping to find some kind of hint of who they
really are.

"Yeah, the Chapel can be quite mysterious," Officer Penhall says,
"Please, just call me Doug."

"The Chapel?" Scully asks.

"That's our little nickname for this place," Doug explains.

Doug stops abruptly in front of a closed door and motions for Mulder and
Scully to wait. Scully stares at the name on the door: Captain Steven
Fuller. Doug knocks on the door.

"Hey, Captain, Agent Mulder and Agent Scully are here," Doug shouts into
the door.

"Come on in," Captain Fuller's muffled voice commands. Doug opens the
door and motions with his free arm for Mulder and Scully to enter.
Captain Fuller stands behind his wooden desk, his office modestly
furnished. Mulder and Scully approach him, reaching their hands over his
desk.

"Captain Fuller, I'm Agent Mulder and this is Agent Scully," Mulder
politely introduces, shaking his hand. Scully nods as Captain Fuller
shakes her hand.

"Nice to me you two. Please sit down," Captain Fuller says, resettling
into his chair.

"Anything else, Captain?" Doug asks, still standing by the door.

"No, that's all, Penhall," Captain Fuller replies, "We'll meet up with
you guys later."

Doug nods, smiles at Mulder and Scully, and exits the office. Captain
Fuller returns his gaze to the visiting FBI agents.

"So, I hope you didn't have any problems finding the place. You must
understand how we at Jump Street must maintain our secrecy," Captain
Fuller replies, almost apologetically.

"No, we didn't have any problems at all," Mulder answers, "If anything,
it was the driving that frustrated us."

Captain Fuller laughs loudly, the office echoing his amusement.

"Yes, driving in New York can be a 'bitch'," Captain Fuller jokes,
instantly breaking the serious barrier that stood between him and the
agents. Scully looks uncomfortably at Mulder, not very amused with
Captain Fuller's choice of words. Mulder grins and shrugs his shoulders.
"Tell me, Agent Scully, what brings you two here to Jump Street."

Scully clears her throat, surprised by Captain Fuller's sudden attention
to her.

"Well, sir, the FBI is aware of your undercover organization and we are
here simply as representatives of the FBI to study your operations,"
Scully answers calmly.

"'Study?'" Captain Fuller asks incredulously, his personality changing
before their eyes, "Study? Or investigate?"

"Captain Fuller," Mulder says, "we are not trying to stop your
operations. In fact, the FBI is very impressed at how accomplished your
group is. We're just here to observe and give a report confirming the
stories of success of your group that have proliferated throughout the
FBI."

Mulder looks Captain Fuller directly, hoping his words did not aggravate
Captain Fuller any further. Mulder tries to imagine how he would feel if
he were on the other side of the desk, if he were the leader of a
successful group of undercover officers and suddenly two FBI agents came
knocking at his door.

Captain Fuller smiles, the anger that had been earlier displayed ceasing.

"My apologies, Agent Scully and Agent Mulder. I try hard to keep Jump
Street hidden from the public's eye and to have you two here only makes
me worry that our organization will be revealed for all to see," Captain
Fuller explains, his hands comfortably twirling a pencil. "I must be
defensive when it comes to my team."

"We understand, Captain Fuller," Scully replies carefully, "And we're
sorry to inconvenience you and your group with our inquiry."

Captain Fuller nods, accepting her apology.

"Well, where should we start?" Captain Fuller questions, "I'm sure you
two are already aware of what Jump Street does."

"Basically, your organization works undercover in local high schools,
correct?" Mulder asks.

"Ah, you'd be amazed at what kind of cases we work on within these high
schools, Agent Mulder," Captain Fuller replies. "Drug abuse, sexual
abuse, gangs, car theft, homicides, you name it. Everyone assumes such
things only occur in the ghettos, but they all exist in high schools.
It's almost unbelievable what public educational institutions must deal
with nowadays."

"Your team must be very close," Scully says.

"They certainly are," Captain Fuller responds, "I'm very proud of them.
They're good at what they do. In fact, why don't I introduce them all to
you? I'm sure you're interested in meeting these talented officers."

Scully and Mulder glance at each other, anticipating their introduction
to the undercover officers.

Jump Street Headquarters
Tues 10 Oct 1996
11:30 AM

Loud laughter and chatter escapes the room above as Mulder and Scully
follow closely behind Captain Fuller up a flight of stairs. The group of
people resort to silence upon the entrance of the visiting agents. Harsh
lights illuminate the room, revealing a wall of gray metal lockers and
wooden benches spread about.

"Everyone, I want to introduce you to Agent Scully and Agent Mulder,"
Captain Fuller says in a loud voice. Scully and Mulder nod in
acknowledgement. "Agent Scully and Agent Mulder, meet Officer Harry
Ioki..."

Officer Ioki steps forward to shake their hands.

"...Officer Judy Hoffs..."

The only female of the group smiles brightly at the two agents. "Nice to
meet you," she says quickly.

"...Officer Tom Hanson..."

Scully recalls his handsome face on the slides. Officer Hanson shakes
Mulder's hand and then takes Scully's. "Hi," he says, looking at Scully.
 She smiles shyly.

"...and you've already met Officer Doug Penhall," Captain Fuller
finishes.

Doug remains by his opened locker, pictures of pin-up girls decorating
the insides. He grins and waves.

"If you will excuse me, Agent Mulder and Agent Scully," Captain Fuller
explains, " I need to get back to my office. I have some things I must
get done today. My team will be happy to show you around and answer any
questions you may have. I'll be certain to set up a time for us to talk
again tomorrow."

The two agents watch as Captain Fuller exits and they return their gaze
to the youthful-looking undercover cops. An awkward silence passes.

"So, Agent Mulder and Agent Scully," Officer Hoffs starts, "what brings
you to Jump Street?"

"Officer Hoffs-" Scully starts.

"Please," Officer Hoffs interrupts, "call me Judy. Captain Fuller
prefers to call us by our last names, but we'd like you to just call us
by our first names."

"Okay, Judy," Scully continues, smiling uncomfortably, "We're here just
to see how exactly your program works. We've heard endless praise about
your team and we're here to observe and confirm your success."

"Sounds pretty simple," Harry replies, "but I must admit, it's kinda
scary knowing that the FBI is checking us out."

The room fills with the collective laughter of everyone.

"Yeah, the FBI is notorious for our good-guy image," Mulder suggests.
"Personally, I'm amazed at how young you all appear. How old are you?"

"I know this will sound absolutely unbelievable, but we're all pretty
much in our thirties," Tom says, sitting on a bench. "Would you guys
like to sit down?"

Scully sits while Mulder remains standing.

"In your thirties? That's amazing,," Mulder replies, "How do you manage
to look so young?"

"We all are on a strict diet and we all subscribe to a rigorous, daily
exercise routine," Doug answers, shutting his locker door. "We have to
work hard to look young, especially since we work undercover in high
schools, but we've noticed lately that time is no longer on our side and
we're gonna have to changes jobs soon."

"Healthy diet and exercise, huh?" Scully says, giving Mulder a
told-you-so look, "Being a doctor, I know how such activities can promote
a youthful appearance."

"It certainly does," Judy interjects, "And it's amazing the kind of
cosmetics out there that can also hide signs of aging."

"So what kind of disguises do you guys employ?" Mulder asks, continuing
his strict line of questioning, "It must be difficult to keep your
identities secret, particularly since you work in public high schools."

"There are a lot of high schools in New York, Agent Mulder," Harry says,
"Our disguises aren't extravagant or anything, but our team is careful
when it comes to assigning which officer goes to this high school or
that one. I'm still amazed that we haven't run into any major problems.
Maybe just a handful, but they've all been resolved in that the students
or faculty that do recognize us are the ones that we investigate and
convict."

"You seem very interested in our abilities to fool the public," Tom
replies, looking suspiciously at the agents.

"I think your abilities as undercover professionals are extremely
impressive," Scully explains. "If the FBI could learn from your tactics,
we could infinitely improve our undercover operations."

Tom looks at Scully, openly studying her face. She shifts uncomfortably
on the bench.

"Well," Mulder says, clapping his hands together, "How about a tour of
the place?"

"Sure," Doug says. "How 'bout Tom and me giving Agent Mulder and Agent
Scully the tour? Let's all meet up in the cafeteria afterwards for some
lunch."

Everyone is content with Doug's suggestion.

"Let's go!" Doug calls out, heading towards a large hole in the center of
the room, a long metal pole in the middle of it. He wraps his hands
around the pole and slides down, yelling out, "Yee-haw!"

Tom laughs and looks over at Mulder and Scully. He places his hands on
the pole.

"Welcome to Jump Street," he says, disappearing into the hole. Mulder
and Scully walk over and look down the strangely placed hole. Doug and
Tom are at the bottom, encouraging them to hurry up. Scully looks at
Mulder. Mulder has a smile on his face and Scully can't help thinking
how childish and adorable he looks.

"Wanna go first?" Mulder asks mischievously..

"No, you go ahead," Scully says. Mulder nods and jumps onto the pole.
He swirls artfully around the pole. He looks up at Scully.

"Your turn," Mulder shouts up to Scully, as Tom and Doug smile. Scully
looks up at the ceiling as she reaches for the pole.

"Thank God I'm wearing pants," she mutters before wrapping herself
carefully around the pole, the three men waiting below coaxing her to
come on down, "I can't believe I'm doing this."

*****************************************

1:20 PM

"So what'd you think?" Mulder asks, turning out of the driveway. Scully
glances at the warehouse, amazed at how deceptive the facade is.

"I thought they were all very nice," Scully answers, "and absolutely
normal."

"You didn't think their presence, their personalities, seemed strange?"

"Are you trying to bring up their youthful appearance again?" Scully
asks.

"No," Mulder says, frustrated, "They acted so young, almost immature."

"True," Scully agrees, "but then you have to remember they work in high
schools, surrounded by students. They have to maintain a youthful
outlook of life to fit in with the rest of the teenagers. I can see how
easy it would be to naturally gravitate one's personality with one's
surroundings."

Mulder grips the steering wheel tightly. For the most part, he agrees
with Scully's ideas, but he has a gut feeling that something isn't right
about the Jump Street gang.

"Besides, they're certainly not doing anything wrong," Scully adds
thoughtfully. "They're not hurting anyone."

"Still, we can't let their obvious good work for the community dissuade
our report of their operations," Mulder replies.

"Of course," Scully says. "Finally, we agree on something."

Mulder glances over at Scully. She is looking straight ahead.

"Scully..." he says, tired of their constant disagreements. Scully turns
towards him, a smile on her face.

"I know," she sighs, feeling the same emotions. "But we both know this is
what makes our partnership work so well."

The worrisome frown on Mulder's face is replaced by a smile as Scully
returns her gaze to the traffic in front of them. They drive the rest of
the way to their motel in silence, content with each other's presence.

Lyndon Johnson High School
Wed 11 Oct 1996
10:43 AM

"This is getting ridiculous," Mulder says, as Scully parks the car into
the fourth high school parking lot they've seen today. He looks at the
pictures of the Jump Street cops. "We've gone to the exact high schools
Captain Fuller told us about and absolutely no one recognizes them.
You'd think, after all the ruckus and media attention that somebody,
anybody, would think their faces were familiar."

"It certainly is strange," Scully agrees, shifting the gear into park,
"unless their disguises are impeccable and their ability to fade out of
the limelight is insurpassable."

"I'm starting to think Jump Street is some kind of Mission: Impossible
team dropped in the middle of New York City," Mulder replies, opening the
car door.

The eerie silence suggests that classes are in session. They walk
towards the entrance, noticing this high school is not the typical rich,
upper-class entity. There is graffiti on the walls of the building and
trash gently rustles across the cement. The main office is easy to
locate. Scully glances at the two male students sitting impatiently near
the main office door, possibly waiting to see the principal.

"Hello," Mulder says, attracting the attention of the secretary behind
the counter. He takes out his FBI badge and flashes it. "I'm Agent
Mulder. This is Agent Scully. I called earlier to make an appointment
to see Principal Johnson."

"Yes," the secretary confirms, "Principal Johnson is waiting for you.
I'll tell him you're here."

Mulder returns his badge to his pocket. He and Scully take in their
surroundings, the basic office interior exactly like the others they've
seen today. The secretary appears, gesturing for them to come behind the
counter. Mulder and Scully follow her down the narrow hallway.

"Principal Johnson," the secretary immediately says, poking her head into
the principal's office, "this is Agent Scully and Agent Mulder."

"Please, have a seat," Principal Johnson says after shaking their hands.
"What can I do for you?"

"We just have a few questions, sir," Scully says. "Two years back, one
of your students was convicted for drug dealing."

"There's been more than one," Principal Johnson lamely jokes. "But two
years back...hmm..I think the student was Michael Richards."

"Good memory," Mulder replies. Principal Johnson shrugs. "Does the Jump
Street organization ring a bell?"

"Why yes," Principal Johnson answers. "One of their undercover cops
busted Michael. They did an excellent job. Kept the whole situation
pretty quiet. I believe they also convicted one of my other students for
car theft."

Scully nods, verifying Principal Johnson's recollection. Mulder takes
out the pictures of Officers Harry Ioki and Tom Hanson from his pocket,
the two who reportedly convicted Principal Johnson's two students. He
hands them over to the principal.

"Do these two men look familiar?" Mulder asks. Principal Johnson looks
carefully at the pictures and shakes his head regretfully.

"No, they don't. Are they students at my high school?" Principal Johnson
questions, still staring at the pictures. Mulder glances at Scully.
This is the fourth time a principal has asked them if the people in the
pictures were their students.

"No," Mulder answers, his hands reaching for the pictures. Principal
Johnson hands them back gingerly. "They're at another school."

"Oh," Principal Johnson remarks, "well, if they're in trouble, I
certainly recommend you get Jump Street to get on their case."

"Thanks for you time," Scully says, as she and Mulder get up from the
chairs, "We must be on our way."

"Certainly," Principal Johnson says, walking them to the door, "If
there's anything else I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask."

******************************************

11:16 AM

"This is going absolutely no where," Mulder says, throwing his hands in
the air. He doesn't care that a couple of students getting out of a car
are looking at him strangely. "We haven't made any progress."

"Except that we know for sure that Jump Street has a wonderful
reputation," Scully replies, unlocking the driver side's door. She
pushes the powerlock button to let Mulder in. "So what should we do
now?"

Mulder slams the car door behind him. "I think it would be pointless for
both of us to continue our investigation of the high schools."

Scully raises her eyebrow, the phrase 'pointless for both of us' hinting
Mulder's plan. She instinctively drives towards the motel.

"So what are you going to do while I'm checking out the rest of the high
schools on the list?" she asks. Mulder smiles coyly.

"I'm going back to Jump Street headquarters. I think it's time for
Captain Fuller to answer some more questions," Mulder says.

"Be careful," Scully advises, "We both saw how easily aggravated he can
be."

"I know," Mulder replies, noting Scully's concern, "I'll be extra
careful."

Piedmont HIgh School
1:45 PM

Scully sighs loudly as she exits the sixth high school she's seen today.
She is hungry and tired. She feels as if absolutely no progress has been
made.

"If I have to speak to another oblivious high school administrator..."
she says under her breath, searching for her car in the parking lot. A
few high school students wander around, either having short days or
ditching class.

"Agent Scully," a male voice calls from behind. She turns around,
surprised to see Officer Tom Hanson. He looks handsome in his brown
blazer over a white button shirt.

"Officer Han-"

"Tom," he says, smiling, "Just Tom."

"Tom," Scully corrects herself, "What are you doing here?"

"Cutting class," he replies, his eyes scanning the parking lot for high
school administrators. Scully laughs. "Actually, I'm on assignment, but
I don't need to stick around for the rest of the day. I still have to be
careful 'cuz, you know, I'm just a regular high school student."

"Of course," Scully says with a grin.

"Have you had lunch yet?" Tom asks, leaning a little closer. "I know it's
kinda late, but there's this great sandwich place near headquarters."

"I'm honestly starving," Scully answers. "I'd love to join you."

"Alright then," he replies, a flirtatious expression spreading across his
face, "Follow my lead."

Scully watches as he walks toward that old blue Mustang she and Mulder
had seen in the Jump Street parking lot the other day. She gets into her
car, congratulating herself for having the opportunity to find out more
about the real Tom Hanson. However, she also finds herself personally
curious about this mysterious man.

Lou's Gourmet Sandwiches
2:30 PM

"What's it like being in high school again?" Scully asks, sipping from
her cup of soda.

"I thought I'd always enjoy returning to that atmosphere," Tom answers,
wiping his mouth with a napkin, "But with the things that go on nowadays,
I dunno... Makes me glad I grew up when I did."

"What's the hardest thing about working undercover?" Scully questions.
Tom smiles.

"Ah, there are numerous things. I feel like a man trapped in an
adolescent body," he jokes, "I've met many teachers I would've liked to
get to know, I mean, REALLY know."

"Oh?" Scully says. "Have you ever gotten involved with one?"

"Many," Tom answers. "Of course, at first, they think I'm a high school
student, so they push me off. Once they find out I'm really a cop, well,
it's a whole different story." He laughs at Scully's expression. "I'm
kidding! Okay, maybe two teachers, but otherwise I try and stay away
from relationships."

"Why?"

"My job can be dangerous and I don't think it would be fair to whoever
I'm dating for her to worry about me all the time," he replies. Scully
nods, understanding. "Also, when you work undercover, you can't have a
social life at all 'cuz there's always the fear you'll be recognized by
someone."

"It's amazing your team has thrived so long without any major problems,"
Scully says.

"Yeah," he agrees, looking at the table top. Scully senses that
something troubles him deeply. "You know what really is the hardest
thing about working undercover in high schools?"

Scully shakes her head.

"When you meet students who feel so alienated, so lost, so hopeless," he
says, meeting Scully's eyes, "and you understand their feelings. I can't
tell you how many times I've met students who've given up on life. I've
even seen students commit suicide, right before my eyes ."

Scully sets her cup back on the table, speechless.

"Sometimes I blame myself," Tom says, a forced, awkward smile on his
face, "I know the signs. They tell you how they'd kill themselves. They
tell you when, where. So many times, I could've saved them, could've
stopped them, and so many times I've been too late."

"Tom," Scully says, placing her hand on his arm. Scully sees the same
self-hatred and self-blame in Tom that Mulder has.

"I know, I know," Tom says sadly. "Sometimes I wish I could just leave
Jump Street and live a normal life..."

"Why don't you?" Scully asks.

"I can't, " he says, looking away, "They depend on me...there's no
way...there's no way I can make you understand..."

"What do you mean?" Scully urges, "Please explain to me why you can't
just get up and leave."

"We live in two different worlds, Agent Scully, " he says, his voice
suddenly cold. He glances at his watch and abruptly gets up from the
table. "I have a meeting with the others back at headquarters."

"May I join you?" Scully asks, getting up.

"No," he says curtly His face softens as he sees the look of concern on
Scully's face. "It's a private meeting. I'm sorry."

Scully sits back down as she watches Tom throw his trash away and walk
out the door. While she feels sorry for him, for his inability to lead a
regular life and act his real age, she can't help noticing how strange
his words were.

Why can't he quit Jump Street?, she asks herself silently. Why does he
feel so trapped?

Starlight Motel
5:13 PM

Mulder falls flat on his face onto his bed, that familiar motel-smell
smothering him. He is exhausted. His cell phone rings on the night
table and he reluctantly reaches for it.

"Mulder," he says.

"It's Scully," she replies on the other line, "How'd it go?"

"I think I've managed to test Captain Fuller's anger and patience even
more, " he answers, sitting up and leaning his back against the
headboard.

"What happened?"

"I tried hard to be appeasing, but my questions got more direct. I asked
Captain Fuller if he could explain to me how he makes sure his team
doesn't get recognized, if he had any detailed plans written. He refused
to show me any files. When I mentioned that you and I had visited some
high schools earlier, he was furious," Mulder pauses, "He knows now that
it is Jump Street that is under full investigation."

Scully sighs on the other side.

"Mulder, I had lunch with Tom Hanson today," she says.

"Did you find out anything?"

"Our conversation was strange. He really opened up to me, about how he
felt as if he couldn't be himself. But when I suggested he should do
what he wanted, which is leave Jump Street, he became cold and distant.
It was as if that option didn't exist for him," Scully replies.

Mulder is silent, his mind racing.

"I know where the answers are, Scully," he says suddenly.

"Where?"

"They're at Jump Street headquarters, in those files," he says, "Listen,
while I was there today, I discovered another way to get inside. I think
we should go there-"

"Tonight," Scully finishes his train of thought. Mulder smiles.

"Once again, we agree," he says. "Get out those sexy, tight black
clothes, Scully."

**************************

Jump Street Headquarters
11:47 PM

The car creeps silently into the parking lot, its headlights already
turned off. Scully scans the region, making sure the warehouse is in
fact empty. She glances over at Mulder, who is also checking the
premises. He feels her stare and turns to her. He nods, affirming he
sees no one around.

Mulder turns the engine off. After pushing the car doors closed, the two
run quickly towards the warehouse. Mulder leads the way, heading
directly for the metal staircase that zigzags along the side of the
building. He points upward, bringing to Scully's attention a slightly
ajar window a few flights up. They dart up the staircase on their toes,
the full moon illuminating the way.

"Watch your step," Mulder whispers, gently pushing the window open. He
had made sure it was unlocked when he was at the warehouse earlier today.

Scully carefully plants her feet as she wiggles her way inside the
warehouse. She reaches for the flashlight in her pocket. The beam
shoots out instantly as she presses on a button. She brushes the beam
around her, realizing they are in the locker room. She moves forward
just as Mulder lands behind her. Mulder turns on his flashlight as well.

"Down the pole," Mulder coaxes, running towards that seemingly misplaced
hole in the center of the room. Scully follows closely behind, sliding
expertly down.

Mulder leads the way, down the narrow hallway past Captain Fuller's
office, into a hidden room full of cabinets. He pulls hard on a drawer,
but it allows him no entrance.

"Dammit!" he says under his breath. Scully reaches into her pocket and
hands him her handy pocket knife. He desperately probes the lock with a
sharply pointed knife as Scully brushes her flashlight's beam over the
expanse of the room.

"I'm having a terrible feeling, Mulder," Scully whispers, her eyes wide
in anticipation.

"Got it!" Mulder exclaims, the cabinet drawer sliding open. "Start
looking at these files while I try and open another."

Scully sets her flashlight atop the cabinet, its beam facing the ceiling
and illuminating the entire room. Mulder rushes over to the next filing
cabinet. Her hands run across the tops of the folders and she realizes
she is looking at files pertaining to homicides. She closes the drawer
and pulls open the one below.

"Mulder, there are too many files to look at," she complains, her eyes
now scanning folders containing reports on drug busts. "What am I
looking for?"

Scully is suddenly silent, her hands unmoving. Mulder looks at her, a
questioning expression on his face. Scully sniffs the air, a strange
odor emanating from somewhere.

"Do you smell that?" Scully asks, turning around, her sense of smell
leading her to the side of the room. Mulder follows her, noticing too
the sour, rotting odor. Scully stops in front of a door with a "do not
enter" sign written in red. The smell escapes the cracks between the
door and the frame. She tries to open the door, but it too is locked.

"Move back," Mulder commands as he reaches for his gun.

"We shouldn't," Scully protests as she backs away. "They'll know we were
here."

"They'll know when they see the file cabinets have been tampered with,"
he justifies, and shoots numerous times at the doorknob until the door
swings open. Scully grabs her flashlight from atop the file cabinet and
gets behind Mulder.

Mulder shines his flashlight into the darkness, another staircase hidden
within. He descends cautiously, Scully following closely. She flashes
her light behind her, a wretching feeling telling her someone is nearby,
but she sees nothing.

They come upon what looks like a large lab. Test tubes, goggles,
beakers, flasks, droppers, and other various sterile equipment are
scattered across counter tops with fume hoods resting above. Scully runs
over to where the scent is most strong and finds a bin full of plastic
bags containing a gray powder. She picks one up and shows Mulder.

"They're producing illegal drugs," Scully says, the revelation shocking
her. Mulder grabs the little bag of powder and opens it. He sticks his
finger in it and a few grains cling to his touch. He tastes the
substance. He feels dizzy and nearly falls. "Mulder!"

"I'm fine, I'm okay," he reassures, steadying himself. The dizziness
quickly disappears. "I'm not sure what that stuff is."

Scully hears something, a rattling sound very near them. Her eyes grow
wide as she whips out her gun. She desperately searches for the source
of the sound.

"Who's there?" she exclaims, but only darkness answers. "We better go
now, Mulder." She grabs the little bag from Mulder and stuffs it in her
pocket. She runs towards the staircase. Mulder glances around the lab.

"Come on!" Scully urges from the staircase. Mulder rushes to join her.

As Scully and Mulder run out of the secret lab, they do not notice the
figure emerge from the shadows. Officer Judy Hoffs had been watching them
the whole time.

NYPD Narcotics Lab
Thur 12 Oct 1996
9:12 AM

Scully dials Mulder's cell phone number as she stares at the test results
of the gray powder found in the secret lab at Jump Street headquarters.

"Mulder," he answers, his voice a little drowsy.

"It's me," Scully says, "The test results are in."

"What'd you find?"

"I'm not sure exactly," Scully answers, "The powder is comprised of many
things, dangerous chemical structures like dimethyltryptamine, which is a
semi-synthetic hallucinogenic, and methamphetamine hydrochloride, a very
potent form of amphetamine..."

"Hmm...looks like the Jump Street crew has been making some extra funds
from their drug busts," Mulder surmises.

"But, Mulder," Scully says quickly, "I found something else in the
powder's chemical structure, something no one at this lab can identify.
I am completely dumbfounded. I've never seen anything like it before."

Scully anxiously waits for Mulder to say something.

"I think we should confront the Jump Street gang-"

"No," Scully interrupts, "I think we need to get back to Washington,
where we can thoroughly test the substance. I think we also need
back-up. They may be hostile."

"We have damning evidence, Scully. You did find traces of illegal
narcotics," Mulder argues.

"They know where we are and I'm sure they know by now that we were the
ones who broke into their headquarters last night. We're in danger,
we're outnumbered, and I think we need to get out of here as soon as
possible," Scully protests, "I'm leaving the lab right now. Call for
back-up, Mulder. We can't take any chances."

Mulder is silent for a few seconds. He knows that tone of voice Scully
is using, the tone that says "I-will-not-tolerate-any-disagreement".

"Alright, Scully," he replies, "You win. I'll call for back-up."

Scully is surprised at how easily Mulder bowed down.

"Okay, I'm on my way," she says and hangs up the phone. Placing the
remaining bag of powder into her pocket, she thanks the man that assisted
her with the lab equipment and walks briskly out the door.

**************************

Starlight Motel
9:41 AM

"Where did Mulder go?" she asks herself as she drives into the Starlight
motel parking lot, his rented car not in sight. "If he didn't do what I
said..."

She jumps out of her car, slamming the door shut. As she slips her key
into her room's doorknob, she notices a note written in Mulder's
handwriting.

"Be back in a few minutes...had to check something," it said.

"Dammit, Mulder," Scully says, pushing her door open. Closing the door
with her foot, she goes towards her bed and drops to her knees, reaching
for her suitcase underneath. She slams the suitcase on top of the
mattress. Sliding the closet door open, she pulls her clothes off of the
hangers, tediously folds them, and lays them in her suitcase. She drops
what she is doing when she hears a knock at the door.

"Mulder, where the hell did you --" she asks as the opens the door, but
she doesn't finish because the sight of Tom Hanson catches her by
surprise. "Tom-"

He shoves her back into the room and slams the door behind him.

"I trusted you, Agent Scully," he says, his eyes watering. "Why couldn't
you just listen to me? Why couldn't you just be a friend?"

"Tom," Scully says, trying to remain calm, "Please let me explain."

Tom covers his ears with the palms of his hands. He shakes his head from
side to side. Scully is frightened.

"I trusted you, Agent Scully. And you betrayed me. You told Agent
Mulder. You both broke into Jump Street headquarters last night.
Everyone knows it was you two. And they're all blaming me," he says
sadly, "It's all my fault."

Scully tries to touch his arm, but he moves away, as if her touch pained
him. Her eyes widen as Tom reaches for his gun and points it at her.

"We've got to leave now," he commands, "Everyone's waiting for us."

Scully looks desperately around the room. How will Mulder know where I
am?, she asks herself.

"Agent Mulder's there, too," Tom replies, as if hearing her question.
Scully's heart sinks. "Like I said, everyone's waiting for us."

*****************************

Jump Street Headquarters
10:12 AM

Scully winces, Tom's gun pushing roughly against her back. Silence
envelops them, the usual sounds of a busy office no where to be found.
There's no one sitting at the desks, no phones ringing. Scully wonders
where everyone is. Tom pushes her down the narrow hallway leading to
Captain Fuller's office.

The door is already opened. Scully sees Mulder instantly. He sits
calmly on a chair pushed against the wall. He appears unharmed. He looks
up at her, his eyes telling her that they will be alright. Officers Judy
Hoffs, Doug Penhall, and Captain Fuller stand in a semi-circle, waiting
for her arrival.

"Where's Officer Harry Ioki?" she asks, as Tom motions with his gun for
her to sit next to Mulder.

"He didn't feel well this morning," Captain Fuller says coldly. "Thanks
for your concern. But that's not why we brought you two agents over this
morning."

Tom stands in a corner of the room, as if hiding in shame. The look of
guilt on his face pervades even so.

"We know you two broke into headquarters last night. And we know you
took something that belongs to us," Judy accuses. Scully stares blankly
at Mulder.

"We want to know the truth," Mulder replies loudly.

"The truth?!?" Captain Fuller says, laughing harshly in front of Mulder's
and Scully's faces. Mulder looks away. "I'll tell you the truth..."

Scully watches in surprise as Judy walks towards Doug and leans her head
on his shoulder. He wraps his arms around her in a comforting embrace,
her body shaking as she sobs. Tom looks at the floor, his hands wrapped
in tight fists at his sides.

"In 1985, we engaged in a routine drug bust at a student's home," Captain
Fuller begins, "and there we discovered a powder we'd never seen before.
We handed the drug over to proper authorities and we waited anxiously to
find out what the powder was. We were afraid it was a new drug that was
hitting the high schools. After nearly two months without any news, we
get this phone call. A man told us that the drug was truly a new drug,
something never seen before. And he told us tests were done on rats and
something amazing happened. The rats weren't aging; they were absolutely
healthy. He said that the drug appeared to be harmless, but human
subjects were needed. He asked, no, he demanded that we at Jump Street
be their new rats. He thought it was fitting since we worked undercover
in high schools, we needed to look young. I fought hard, I refused
profusely, but he promised if the drugs had no effect on us over a span
of a week, our bodies would no longer be subjected to them. But we
didn't have a choice, regardless..."

Captain Fuller pauses, his eyes urging for understanding, for compassion.

"...but the man didn't tell us the drugs were addictive. He didn't tell
us anything about what the drugs were composed of. We all took those
drugs and in that first week, nothing happened, yet we kept taking them.
No one stopped us. It was as if we were being told silently to keep on
going. Nothing happened to us, not until a few weeks later.."

"What happened?" Mulder asks, his voice full of urgency. Captain Fuller
looks gravely down at Mulder.

"Do you want to see what happens, Agent Mulder?" he asks, taking a small
plastic bag full of the gray powder from his pocket. "Hanson, will you
come over here and demonstrate for our two agents?"

Tom reluctantly moves towards Captain Fuller. Mulder and Scully watch as
Captain Fuller pours the powder across the top of his desk. Tom slowly
leans forward, sniffing the powder hard. He faces Mulder and Scully,
his eyes turning red. Suddenly, his body starts convulsing. Scully
gasps as Tom's face contorts before her eyes. His cheekbones seem to
shift down, his lips smaller, his nose higher, his chin longer. Tom no
longer looks like Tom. Tom looks into her eyes as he shrieks in pain.
He collapses, face down, to the floor.

"Tom!" Scully exclaims, jumping up. She falls down on her knees, turning
him over. His face is normal once again, but he is unconscious. She
checks his pulse. His slow, irregular pulse worries her. "We need to
get him to a doctor."

"No!" Captain Fuller yells authoritatively. Scully turns towards Mulder,
her eyes telling him Tom's life is in danger. Judy Hoffs is now wailing
into Doug Penhall's shoulder.

"Captain Fuller-" Mulder attempts to say.

"No," Captain Fuller reiterates, "I will not let my team end their lives
in some lab, being studied and probed by the government. See, Agent
Mulder and Agent Scully, I never told the man what the drug was doing to
us. We kept taking the drugs, not because the government provided it,
but because we figured out how to make it. There was something in that
drug that nobody had seen before, but whatever it was started to
reproduce itself. All we had to do was add the chemicals we already
knew of into the sample the man provided us, and it just kept growing and
growing. "

"You never said anything?" Scully asks in disbelief.

"I said nothing," Captain Fuller answers, "I knew if I did, we would no
longer be able to live out here, doing the job we all love. The
addiction to the drug...I never anticipated how strongly we would depend
on the drug. It helped us to do our jobs even better. We were able to
work more effectively in the high schools. The drug allowed us to never
worry about our identities being revealed. And now we are paying for our
greed, our vanity. The drug has been killing us slowly. I have no doubt
in my mind that our deaths are around the corner. Ioki couldn't even
make it in today; he's been extremely ill."

Tom sits up suddenly, leaning his back against Captain Fuller's desk.
Scully looks worriedly into his eyes. He grins.

"Enjoy the freak show?" he asks. Scully shows no amusement.

Mulder stares in disbelief at Captain Fuller. He looks at the others. A
science experiment gone bad, he says to himself.

"What do you want from us?" Mulder asks.

"You knew we weren't going to hurt either of you," Captain Fuller
confirms, "The only thing I ask of you is to not report what you've seen,
what you've discovered."

"You want us to falsify our report?" Scully asks, still leaning near Tom.

"I no longer trust the government, Agent Scully. If you tell them what
happened, they'll be sure to lock us up in cages. Let us die
peacefully," Captain Fuller states.

Scully starts to say something, but quickly shuts her mouth when she
looks at the expression on Mulder's face.

"What will you do now?" Mulder questions.

"Close down Jump Street, Agent Mulder," Captain Fuller responds. "Our
bodies are failing us and we can no longer perform our duties safely.
We're waiting for death to knock at our door."

Scully shakes her head in protest, but she feels Tom's hand grab hers.
He squeezes her hand, insisting this is what he wants.

"Please," he whispers weakly, "Agent Scully, this is my only chance..."

"Only chance to what?" Scully asks, looking carefully into Tom's eyes.

"My only chance to leave Jump Street forever," he finishes.

********************************

Highway in NYC
12 noon

"I can't believe we're just going to let them die," Scully says as Mulder
drives back to Starlight Motel. Mulder had said it was best they just
pick up their things and go.

"Scully, don't you understand what happened to them?" Mulder asks, "The
government used them, deceived them. The government knew those drugs
were addictive...they knew."

Scully remains silent, unable to accept Mulder's words.

"I'm just as scared for them as you are," Mulder says, "and even though
Captain Fuller said he told nothing of what the drugs were doing to his
team, I'm sure the government knows. If Captain Fuller is as smart as I
hope he is, he's gonna move his team out of here before the end of the
day. Our investigation probably made it easier for the government to
come in and take them all away."

"Why?" Scully asks.

"Because we confirmed Jump Street's existence and success. Because we
reminded the government that Jump Street is still out here, kicking,"
Mulder explains.

Scully looks at her hand, the hand Tom Hanson grasped so tightly in his
own. These people were good people, she thinks. They kept on serving
the public, even though the public failed to save them.

"Can you imagine what the government could do with a drug that can change
a person's identity?" Mulder questions, the idea frightening him. "The
government could get away with everything and anything. Spies,
assassinators, thieves..."

Scully doesn't really listen as Mulder ponders how powerful such a drug
could be. Instead, she stares out the window, wishing that time had
never stopped for Tom Hanson, and for the others at Jump Street.
