"We're trying to find a murder who killed three people by mysteriously and shooting people-square in the chest," he answered, and then laughing at his own answer. "Scully, what are we doing out here? It's hotter then---" "Let's go inside, Mulder," she said, cutting him off. "Let's." But before they entered the air conditioned building, there was a gunshot. Mulder looked to his left just in time to see Scully drop to the ground. "Scully!" he said, dropping to the ground to see if she was ok. "Scully! Can you hear me?" No answer came. He grabbed his cell phone and dialed 9-1-1. "This is Special Agent Fox Mulder, I need medical attention now! I have an agent down!" he yelled into the phone rather loudly, on the brink of breaking down to tears. As Mulder starred into the hospital room where his partner lay, he felt a million miles away. Or, maybe he wanted to be. Only ten minutes ago had they been talking and bantering together, and now look what had happened. How many times had they been here? Had this exact thing happen? Now, he looked at Scully's limp body, lying on the white bed, her condition stabilized, but still critical. The only sound Mulder heard was the faint beeping of the heart monitor on the background. Who ever did this, is going to pay. He thought. He knew what he had to do now, and wasn't looking forward on doing it. But non the less, he [pulled out his cell and dialed Mrs. Scully's phone number. "Hello?" Came a voice on the other line. "Mrs. Scully? This is Mulder, I work with your daughter...?" "Yes Fox? Is everything ok?" "There's been an accident." "What happened to Dana?" Mulder took a deep breath, contemplating on what to say. "Someone shot her. No, Mrs. Scully-she's not ok. She is in critical condition, the doctors have her stabilized for now." "Why? How could this happen?" "Mrs. Scully, I'm very sorry. I'm just as hurt as you, she's in ICU, floor 6, room 513. If you want to come to see her." "Yes. Thank you Fox. I'll be right there." After standing outside Scully's room for a while, Mulder finally went in. She looked so little, so helpless. All the tubes and needles poked into her skin-it was enough to make Mulder want to through up. His thoughts were interrupted by a figure that walked into the room. "How is she?" she softly asked. "I don't know," he answered. Just then a doctor came walking in. "Hello, Mrs. Scully?" he said, shaking her hand. Then he turned to Mulder, "Husband?" he said, shaking his hand and gesturing towards Scully. Inside Mulder laughed to himself, but remained cool on the outside. "Um, uh, no, but I work with her. We're close friends." he answered. The doctor knodded and they sat down. "Well, then let me tell you about Miss Scully's condition. She was shot in the chest about 5mm from the heart. Luckily, the bullet missed the major artery, but it damaged some tissue, causing some major internal bleeding." "Will she be ok?" Mrs. Scully asked. The doctor looked first at Mulder, and then at Mrs. Scully. "She has been wounded severely, and only time will tell. But the chances are not to good," he answered, getting up. "Oh, I'm sorry. I'm Dr. Keesher, I'll be incharge of your daughter's medical care," The doctor then left. "Thank you Fox, for telling me. I'll be right back, I'm going to call some family," she said and left. Once she was gone, Mulder walked over to Scully's bed and sat down. He took her hand. She was so small, two of her hands could fit into Mulder's. "Scully," Mulder cried. "You're going to be ok. I wont let you die! I wont!" He laid his head on the pillow next to her and started to cry. Fox Mulder, Spooky Mulder never cried. But had meant, means so much to him. "Mulder. . ." Mrs. Scully said, coming into the room. "I'll stay!" he said, jumping up, hoping she hadn't seen him crying. "Mulder- I understand you want to be with her, but I'm her--" "You stay, I'm sorry," he quickly apologized. Mrs. Scully laughed. "You do care about her, alot. Don't you?" Without hesitation, Mulder replied, "Yes, she means everything to me. I would give my life for hers. I should have gotten that bullet, I should be laying in that bed dying-not her. Not your daughter. Not Scully." "Fox, you're putting the blame on yourself, you can't do that. I'm sure she'd say the same thing as you." she said. "Look, why don't you go home and get some sleep, ok? Take it easy. Then in the morning, come in and you can stay with her all day, since I work. I'll stay with her at night. Is it a deal?" Mulder thought for a second. What's to think about? "Yes, deal," he said, hugging her and then leaving. A second later, he re-appeared at the doorway. "You have my cell phone number if anything happens. You'll call me?" "Ofcoarse, Fox. I will. Now go!" Mrs. Scully said. At that, Mulder left and got into the elevator. And got out his phone and called Skinner. "Hello?" "This is Mulder. Scully is in the hospital. I need to take some days off, Scully needs me more then the FBI does right now," Mulder said quickly, not wanting him to interrupt. there was silence. "Agent Mulder, please feel free to take as many days off as you feel necessary. I know how much Agent Scully means to you." Skinner replied. "Thanks." He hung up the phone. Mulder was awakened by falling off the couch and onto the floor. "Jeez," he gasped, getting up. Then, remembering yesterdays events, he got up and ready, and was soon at the hospital. As he turned the corner to the 6th floor, he prepared himself for the worse. He walked into 513 holding his breath. No one was there. He turned around frantically and then ran out to the front desk, adrenaline pumping. "What room is Dana Katherine Scully in? She came in yesterday, room 513," he yelled, not caring if he made a scene. The nurse flipped through some papers. "She was moved to the second floor, room 316." That was all he heard as he was down to the second floor immediately. As he got to 316, he was greeted by a doctor coming out of Scully's room. "I'm sorry, family members only," he said. Mulder looked at him. Tall, broad, but not big enough, I could take him if I-- "He stays," came a voice inside. Mulder pushed through the doorway and to the bed. "Dana?" he said, looking at her. "Well, I was kind of expecting a hello." she answered, taking his hand. Mrs. Scully took this invitation to leave, and did so. "I'll be right back." Mulder was relieved when she left so they could be alone. "How do you feel?" he asked. "I feel ok, a little groggy.. The doctors are going to operate again tomorrow to relieve whatever swelling is left, and then I might be able to leave." she answered, looking into his eyes. "Scully, I was scared. I though you would die yesterday in that hospital room." he said. "Mulder, I'm not going to die," she said, putting her hand around his neck. Mulder got closer to Scully until their lips touched. Shortly after, their kiss was interrupted by Mrs. Scully, who had a huge grin on her face. She thought there was something going on between them, it was about time. Shocked, and slightly embarrassed, Mulder moved away from Scully's bed and sat down, Mrs. Scully joining him. "Are you feeling any better, Dana?" she asked. "Actually," she said, looking at Mulder. "I'm feeling a LOT better. Mrs. Scully's face was radiant. "What?" Scully asked in an innocent voice. "Oh nothing. I'm going to work. You take good care of her, I know you will." She winked at Mulder and then left. As she shut the door, the two burst in to laughter. "I think she's happy with what she saw," Scully said. "Well, so am I," Mulder replied. "Mulder, you're blushing." "I most certainly am not!" "Are too!" "Am NOT!" "Oh just shut up and kiss me!" Scully said, ending their argument. "Oh, Mulder, do you know how exhausting just lying here is?" Scully said. "I'm so dizzy." Mulder laughed. "I wouldn't know. You're probably hungry. I'm going upstairs for some lunch, want anything?" "Yea, anything. . ." she said as he left the room. He got onto the elevator and went up one floor. After getting out of the elevator, he ordered two sandwiches and two ice teas. He then paid for the food and left. "Hey Scully. . ." he said, entering the room again. " didn't know what to get you so I. . ." he stopped, looking at her. "Scully, are you ok?" He put the food down. "No, Mulder. I need a doctor. I don't feel so good." Scully barely said. "I'll go get a doctor, hang in there." Mulder said. She shook her head. "No Mulder, it's to late. They can't do anything. Tell Mom I'll miss her, and you. . .I-I," but she didn't finish. Her hand dropped out of Mulder's as doctors rushed in, pushing Mulder out. "Scully NO!" he shouted. "You're NOT going to die! You can't!" he said more softly, starting to cry. "You can't-you said you wouldn't," But all Mulder heard was the long, perceing beep from the HM. Scully was dead.
