So much for drowning my sorrows, she thought. But the more she remembered about the fight that she and Mulder had at work, the more stupid it became. "I can't even remember what the fight started with! He was talking and I just snapped at him. I should go over and apologize." She grabbed her keys off the table and headed for the door. Mulder was at home too, pondering how the fight started. It was probably my fault, he thought. He grabbed the phone and dialed Scully's number. No answer. Hmm, he wondered, now what should I do? Scully drove down the highway towards Mulder's apartment, willing herself to go faster. She could feel the guilt eating her up inside, and all she wanted to apologize to Mulder. I might not make all her problems disappear, but hopefully it would help her feel better. But her thoughts were interrupted by the a blinding light and the screech of metal as Scully plowed head-on into an on-coming car. She awoke to find herself in a pristine white room that smelt... like death. She saw Skinner peering at her over the rail of the bed. His eyes were soft and sorrowful. "Scully? Do you remember what happened?" "Yes," she replied tentatively, "I was in a car accident. Are the people I hit okay?" "The driver of the other car died instantly. He didn't have any passengers. But Scully... I don't know how to say this... the doctor's don't expect you to live... you had too many internal injuries... they tried to operate... I'm sorry." Scully stared out the window into the darkness of the night. "Please, tell the other family that I'm sorry for causing the man's death." Skinner nodded and waited for her to continue. "Please say good-bye to my mother for me. And sir? Please call Mulder right away and tell him that I'm sorry I started our fight and that I'll always love him." Scully took a long, shuddering breath as her eyelids slid shut. At that moment her lungs ceased to function, and her heart stopped beating. Despite the doctor's efforts to resuscitate her, she passed away. Skinner and the doctor walked slowly away from the hospital room. "Do you need a phone to call and grant Miss Scully's last wish?" Skinner just shook his head sadly. "You aren't going to carry out her last wish?" "I can't... because Mulder was the driver of the other car."
