Skinner said, motioning for Scully to sit down. "What did you find?" "It was empty." she replied. "There wasn't a scrap of furniture left anywhere." He nodded. "I expected as much. . .I've received word that they have sent him to England." "England?" "That's only rumor, but it's a start." Skinner leaned back and examined her. "Are you feeling all right, Dana. You are looking a bit pale." Scully knew he was talking, but her thoughts were elsewhere. She still didn't understand how this could happen and to her of all people. She was a month pregnant and for the first time in as long as she could remember she was terrified. Nothing in the X-Files had ever made her feel this way. "Agent Scully?" Skinners voice cut into her thoughts. "Sir?" she said, unsure of what to say. She could feel his eyes on her as she nervously fiddled with the hem of her blouse. He certainly wasn't going to make this any easier. "Sir." she said again, this time with more confidence. "I have a slight unforeseen problem with this whole entire situation involving Mulder." "What do you mean?" he asked. 'How do I tell superior that I'm pregnant with my x-partners baby?' she wondered. "Sir." she said for the third time since their conversation had begun. "I have a rather strange problem that has just recently come to my attention." The look on Skinners face told her that he didn't understand what she was getting at. His eyes were filled with confusion and worry lines were creeping onto his forehead. "What do you mean?" he asked again. Scully took a deep breath to calm herself. "Two days ago I received word that. . ." she looked down at her hands. "That I'm pregnant." She watched in horror as Skinners expression changed from confusion to anger. "Sir?" "Those bastards!" he screamed. "They can't continue doing this to you. I refuse to let them Scully." "They didn't do this to me." she replied softly. "Mulder and I were together for two nights before he left and I, who was supposed to be unable to bare children, got pregnant. They didn't impregnate me or anything, if that's what you are thinking. It was an accident." "Are you sure?" She nodded. "Yes.: "How far along." "A month." she answered. The realization of her condition was suddenly beginning to sink in. As she answered his questions, the fear that she had buried so deep down inside was beginning to surface. She was alone in this. Mulder wouldn't be there to support her or back her up. He wouldn't be there to claim the child. He would probably never even know about it. "I don't know how I'm going to have this baby." she said through clenched teeth. 'I'm not going to cry.' she told her self. 'Not in front of Skinner.' She could feel her face burning as the tears crept to the corners of her eyes. "What am I going to do?" She wasn't sure how much time had passed before she felt Skinners strong hands on her shoulders. "You will have this baby." she heard him whisper into her right ear. "And even if Mulder isn't there for the child's birth, he will be there to see the child grow up. I promise, Dana. I promise." Scully didn't know why, but she believed him. There was something so promising about the way he spoke. At this point she was willing to believe anything. All she wanted was Mulder back. ************** 10:25 AM FBI Headquarters The Corridors She could feel the eyes on her as she made her way down to her office. Since no one truly knew what happened to Mulder everyone else was left to make their own speculations. Most agents believed he had been transferred, but the more imaginative ones blamed her. The whispers, the eyes, they were all beginning to become too much. "What are you staring at!" she snapped at group of agents standing near the elevators. The younger of the agents cleared his throat. "Nothing." he said, trying to stifle back a laugh. "You're paranoid." She clenched her fists. Why did people have to be so cruel. "No, you were talking about me." she said rudely. "And I want to know what you were saying." Another agent stepped forward. "Why don't you just go back to the dungeon, Agent Scully. I'm sure the other rats miss you down there." he laughed. "Oh, I'm sorry. . .I forgot, you're the only one left." As the agents laughed Scully could feel tears rising in her throat. She had gone through this before, but when Mulder was around she had always had him to protect her. He wouldn't stand for the "Ice Queen", "Mrs. Spooky", or "Rat" jokes. Most agents wouldn't even attempt it when he was around, but now he was gone and she was an easy target. She didn't even know how she had become such a joke. It hadn't all been Mulder's doing. Sometime between her work at Quantico and her being paired up with Mulder she lost nearly all respect. "Lay off, Sam." a deep voice said from somewhere behind. "Well if it isn't Kicker." the agents named Sam cracked. Kicker stepped forward and placed a protective hand on Scully's shoulder. "Do you know how I got that name, Sam?" he asked pressing his finger against the down button. Sam shook his head. "Let's hope you never find out." and with that, he led Scully into the elevator and closed the door. Then he turned to her and pulled her into a tight hug. "You can't listen to them." Sobs shook her frail body. "They all think I'm a freak." Kicker pulled away. "You aren't a freak." he wiped away the tears on her cheek with the back of his hand. "You are one of the kindest, most trusting people I know. They don't know you. They listen to the stupid rumors circulating and not to their heads." Scully looked up at him. "You don't know me either." she pulled away and stepped back into the corner of the elevator. "I was a rat, I was originally sent to the X-Files to spy on Mulder and to debunk his work. Only I couldn't. I started to believe in him and his work." she stepped of the elevator and headed down the hall to her their office. "Scully!" Kicker cried from behind her. "You can't stop believing!" She stopped in her tracks and turned back around to face him. Was that what she was doing? Had she stopped believing? Some thing told her she had. In all her years working with Mulder, she had never once lost faith in her beliefs. Why now, after all that time? The answer was simple, he wasn't there to keep her faith alive. "You need to believe that Mulder will come back." Kicker said, catching up to her. "You need to believe not only for yourself but for the child that grows inside you." Out of habit, her hand traveled down to her stomach. "I believe." ************* May 30th, 1999 Scully Residence 5:15 P.M. "You're two months old." Scully said, running her hand over her slightly swelled belly. "What will you be? A girl or a boy?" she didn't really care either way, as long as it was born healthy. She was getting in the habit of talking to the child. Mulder had been gone nearly two months and she no longer had him to speak to about her fears. Speaking to the baby was her only escape from her life. "I hope you're a girl." he thoughts fell back to Emily, to the child who had been hers and died because of what THEY had done to her. She had been a picture of innocence. She remembered the way her small hands had reached out to examine the cross she wore around her neck. Such a beautiful child gone to waist because of the governments stupid cruelty towards the human race. At the time she had vowed never to love another child the way she had learned to love Emily, but now the vow didn't matter. She wanted this child. She wanted it because it was Mulders and because it was hers. She wanted it because they had created it out of love. Their love. "You'll live to grow old and strong." she promised the fetus. "And your daddy will see you grow up. I promise." She pulled the legs of her sweats down past her ankles and curled up under the heavy quilt on her couch. She was so tired, all she wanted to do was sleep. She closed her eyes, letting the darkness surround her. * * * "Dana." a soft voice sang through her dreams darkness. Scully suddenly found herself standing in a field, surrounded by small cottages and wild flowers. The air was warm against her face and she could smell the sweet lilacs that blew in the distance. "Hello?" she called out, seeing two images approaching. The older and taller of the two stopped abruptly and turned to the other. Then after a moment the younger turned around and headed back off towards where they had come from. There was something so familiar about the two images, but she couldn't put her finger one it. "Hello." she said again. "Sister." the image said coming with in view. Scully grinned as her sister, Melissa, approached. "Missy." she cried. "I've missed you." Her sister smiled and motioned to the other figure who was almost out of sight. "I told Emily to go back." she said. "I hope you don't mind. I wanted to speak with you alone." "I don't mind." Scully replied, trying to hide her disappointment. "Liar." Missy said. "I could always tell when you were lying, Dana." Scully shrugged. "I'll survive, I always do. You know that." Melissa nodded. "I know, you always knew how to survive better than the rest of us." she examined her sister carefully. "You're eyes are sad. If you are worried about whether or not Mulder will be back, you don't have to. He will come back and he'll raise you're baby. I know you're partner, Dana. When you were in the hospital, dying, after your abduction he refused to let us turn off the machines. Mom and I could tell he couldn't be with out you. He can't be with out you, Dana. Remember that, it's your defense." "I guess I don't need to ask how you knew." "No." "How long will I have to wait?" Scully asked. "I don't know." Melissa answered truthfully. "It won't seem like that long if you remember what I told you about his not being able to be without you. Time is like a heartbeat here, it isn't relevant and for me to tell you a year or a month I'd be wrong." she reached out and touched the cross around Scully's neck. "If you keep your faith in God, life will be easier in whole. Don't lose sight of what's important, Dana. I've watched you struggled with your faith more that I ever did, and I've watched you place your trust in God's hands. You just have to trust a higher power." "Why can't I keep sight of what's important?" Scully looked around her. "This place is so beautiful, I almost wish I could stay here will you." "No you don't?" "Why?" Scully cried. "Why am I still alive? Why haven't I died yet. I should be dead. I should have died. Why does HE keeps sparing me. Why am I so different from you? You didn't do anything wrong, your death was in my place. They were trying to kill me, not you." "You don't understand." Melissa said. "The difference between you and I is that it was my time to die and not yours." she motioned around her. "This place is for those who have completed their missions in life. You have not complete yours yet. Don't you wonder how you got pregnant?" Scully nodded. "I just assumed it was an accident." Melissa laughed. "There are no accidents, Dana. You were meant to have this child. Consider it a miracle birth if you must, but when your time comes I'll be here waiting for you, so will Emily and Dad. Your time isn't now and it won't be for a while." tears filled her eyes as she continued. "Someday your pain will stop like mine did and you'll be at peace and you don't have to worry about Mulder not being here too." "How do you know that?" "Soul Mates belong together." she replied softly. "He isn't evil, little sister. He has a good and strong soul. It thrives for the truth and the only way he can ever sell it to Satan is if you go along beside him and I know you, Dana, you'd never go along beside him. You will always be together, in life and in death." "Why?" asked Scully. "How do you know we'll always be together." "Like I said before, soul mates belong together. It's your legacy, it's your *legend*." * * * Scully awoke to the sound of the phone ringing. "Hello." she said, quickly picking up the phone. "Dana." "Yes." she said. "Dana it's Kicker. . " Pause. "Skinner has a case for us and he wants your bags packed immediately. Can you be ready in ten minutes." She glanced down at her sweats, then at the huge pile of clothes in the corner of her room. "Ugh- - Give me twenty." she said and hung up. She felt at peace for the first time since Mulder's absence and with no recollection of her conversation with Melissa, she set out to pack her bags.
