No spoilers, just UST and a lot of angst.

FBI Basement Office
May 24, 1996
5:00 p.m.

FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully were busy at their desks closing one
of the
most bizarre cases they had ever encountered. In Washington State, a man had
claimed he was abducted by Bigfoot. Of course, Scully knew it was all a big
hoax. She couldn't understand why Mulder had been so excited about this case.
There was just no hard-core evidence to suggest that the abduction ever took
place.

Dana Scully was anxious to leave for the weekend. Putting her paperwork off to
the side, she took a quick glance at the clock. It was already five o'clock.
Taking off her glasses, she looked over at her partner. He was consumed in his
work. He obviously wasn't ready to leave. Scully thought he looked gorgeous.
Like one of those men in GQ. He had his wire-rimmed glasses on. A piece of
stubborn, brown hair fell onto his forehead. Scully wondered what it would be
like to make love to him. This thought was in every daydream she ever had. She
knew she loved him. She also knew that her partner was off limits.

"Mulder, is it okay if I leave now. I have plans tonight."

Surprised at what she just said, Mulder looked up from his work. He couldn't
help but notice how beautiful she looked. He was a man in love. A man who
could
never show his feelings for his red-haired, blue-eyed partner. He knew the FBI
would never approve. Plus, he didn't even know if she felt the same way about
him. He would never risk their partnership. It was too important to him.
Unwillingly, Mulder came out of his reverie.

"Sure, Scully, I'll finish up the paperwork."

He wondered what kind of plans she had. It was really none of his business. Oh
well, she probably was doing something with her family. He couldn't help
himself. He had to know.

"So, I guess you have plans with your family tonight."

"No, Mulder, I don't."

Way to go Dana. Could you have been more blunt. He could tell you
were lying. She didn't know why she was so scared to tell him she had
a date. Probably because in the four years that they have been
partners, neither one of them had had much of a personal life. They
spent so much time with each other. They went out to dinner and to the
movies. Sometimes it even felt like they were married.

She couldn't hold it in any longer. She had to tell him. It was so obvious
that
he wanted to know. It wouldn't do any good to lie. Why should she anyway.
She'll just say it real quick and it'll be over with.

"Mulder, I have a date tonight." She waited for his reaction.

He didn't know what to say. All he knew was his happiness wasn't important,
only
hers, so he said the only thing he thought would make her happy.

"Scully, I think that's great."

"You do."

"Of course, I do." He got up from his desk and came around to where she was
sitting.

"Scully, in the four years that we've been working together, I always felt that
it was my fault that you didn't have more of a social life."

"Mulder, it's not-"

"Let me finish. I always thought that if you were still working at
Quantico you probably would have been married, had kids and a house in
the suburbs. Sometimes I wonder if I'm not holding you back, I mean
The X-Files. You have gone through so much pain because of me."

She got up from her desk and came around to the front where he was
standing. Her beautiful, blue eyes looking up to meet his
ever-changing, hazel ones.

"Mulder, that is a very unselfish thing to say. Believe me, if I felt that The
X-Files were holding me back, I would be gone." She reached up and touched his
cheek. She loved the feel of his five o'clock shadow scrapping her palm.

"You are not the cause of any pain in my life, Mulder, believe me." Tears were
forming in her eyes for this tortured man who meant so much to her.

Mulder turned quickly away from her and walked back to his desk. He
didn't want her to see his feelings. He had to get himself under
contol. He loved this woman more than anything else in the world. If
she couldn't love him, he could understand that. He could never stand
in the way of her finding happiness. Just because they could never be
together...

He turned back around and forced a smile on his face. "So, who is the lucky
guy? Do I know him?"

She turned away from him. "Yes, you do. It is Agent Pendrell."

"Oh." Mulder didn't know what else to say. What else could he say. He felt
heartbroken. He wanted to be the one asking Scully out on a date. If only it
was him...

All of a sudden Scully felt sick. Like a wave of nausea coming over
her. She had to leave the office. She grabbed her purse and headed
quickly for the door. "Have a good weekend, Mulder."

"You to." <Liar>

She didn't even hear him. She was out the door and heading down the
hall to the elevator. Once inside the elevator, she was glad she was
alone. She leaned back against the elevator wall and started to cry.
"Sorry, Mulder, I have to go on with my life, no matter how much it
hurts. I'll always love you."

Back in the basement office, Mulder was sitting at his desk with his
head in his hands. He couldn't believe he let her walk out of the
office without telling her how he felt. He knew it was for the best.
Scully deserved to be happy with someone who could give her everything
she's ever wanted. Tears were welling up in his eyes. "Sorry,
Scully, but you can do better for yourself than Spooky Mulder. I
could only cause you pain. I'll always love you."

A few people asked if I would do a sequel to Hidden Feelings, so here it is.

No spoilers, but a M&S relationship ahead.

Scully's Apartment
May 24, 1996
7:00 p.m.

Dana Scully was in her bedroom getting dressed for her date with Agent
Pendrell. She didn't really want to go tonight. She wasn't in the
mood to talk, laugh and be happy. She hated first dates. They were
so awkward. You had to ask questions, make small talk and pretend
that your interested, even if you didn't care. With Mulder, she never
had to make small talk. Hmm, Fox, she just loved that name. It was
so sexy. She loved his eyes, his lips, his smile... The sound of
someone knocking on her door drew her out of her reverie. She quickly
looked at the clock. It was only 7:00. Her date was not until 7:30.
Rising from her bed, she quickly finished dressing and went to answer
the door.

Fox Mulder was nervous standing in front of Dana Scully's apartment
door. He was going to do something tonight he thought he would never
do. He didn't even know what Scully would say. She'll probably
through him out on his ear. He could barely contain himself. "C'mon,
Scully, open the door."

When Scully opened the door, she was shocked to find Mulder standing
there. He looked like a deer caught in the headlights.

"Mulder, what-"

Suddenly, he put his hand on the door and pushed it open. He walked
inside the apartment and into the living room. Flabbergasted, Scully
followed him into the living room.

"Mulder, I have a date in a half hour. You have to leave."

Mulder turned around and met her gaze. "Scully, I love you."

"What?"

"You heard me. I said I love you."

"Mulder, you are wearing on my patience. Have you been drinking?"

"No, I haven't been drinking. I've been thinking, Scully. Thinking
about you and me. I think we should get married. I don't mean in the
future. I mean tonight. I bought us two tickets on the 9:00 flight
to Las Vegas."

Looking at him as if he escaped from a mental institution, Scully sat
down on the sofa. Mulder interrupted her when she opened her mouth to
say something. He was really on a role now.

"Scully, here is proof that I want to marry you." He reached into his
coat pocket and brought out a velvet-covered box. He knelt down on
one knee, opened the box and showed her the beautiful, pear-shaped
diamond ring resting inside. He took the ring out of the box and
lifted her left hand. He slowly placed the ring on her finger, his
eyes never leaving hers.

"Scully, will you marry me?"

Shaking like a leaf, she held his gaze, blue on green. She was
surprised at what came out of her mouth next.

"Yes, Mulder, I'll marry you. I love you too, so much it hurts."
Tears were forming in her eyes.

Mulder took her hand and helped her up from the sofa. Scully put her
arms around his waist. He reached down and tilted her chin up with
his finger. He leaned down and tasted Dana Katherine Scully's lips
for the first time. Their first kiss was gentle and exploratory, each
taking their time to get to know one another in a way they never had
before.

Scully, reluctantly broke away from the kiss, not believing she was
throwing caution to the wind.

"Mulder, I'll have to pack."

"Scully, there is no time for that. We have to leave now. We'll buy
anything we need as soon as we get there."

Smiling, Mulder reached out for Scully's hand as they walked out of
the apartment door. He gave it a tight squeeze, letting her know that
everything was going to be okay. Together they will face whatever
problems await them when they get back. Scully, couldn't believe that
in a few hours she was going to be Mrs. Fox Mulder.

Fifteen minutes later, Agent Pendrell was knocking on Scully's door.
He was very excited. He had wanted this night to happen for a long
time. Wow, a date with Dana Scully. What he didn't know was that
Dana Scully was never going to answer the knock on the door. She was
on the way to the airport with the only man she could ever really
love.
