A special thanks to the fantastic Beduini for her excellent suggestions. I felt like howling, "This is not happening!", when she graciously offered her assistance. (It's a totally surreal experience when one of your favorite authors lends a helping wing.) HIS SAFE EMBRACE by LARI R The little boy's excited chuckles resonated loudly throughout the park. He was sprawled on his belly with his head buried in the long hair of the dog that was lying next to him. He squealed in delight at the golden retriever who was happily licking his cherubic face with a long pink tongue. The toddler then rolled over and climbed up onto his little legs, launching himself into the strong welcoming arms of the tall man standing by his side. Swinging him high into the air, the man engulfed him tightly into his safe embrace. He nuzzled his face into the child's neck which triggered off a fresh peal of giggles. The expression on the man's face was one of unequivocal love and adoration for the precious bundle in his arms. She sat on the park bench, totally enthralled by the sight of the man and the boy. The strong bond of unconditional love and trust that they shared was almost palpable. She felt a huge lump form in her throat and her eyes fill with tears. Her hands crept to the full mound of her abdomen and she gently caressed the miraculous new life that was developing there. It was a glorious Fall day. The majestic trees were alive in a fiery blaze of amber, orange and red. The ground was covered with the bountiful offerings of leaves that had gracefully descended from the trees. The sweet alto of the little boy's voice combined with the deep baritone of the barking dog and the melodious singing of the birds created a cacophony of sounds which culminated in a masterful symphony. She felt alive. Her skin tingled and her heart pounded in her chest. Her senses were tantalizingly teased by the stimuli surrounding her...the sounds, the smells, the wondrous sight of the man and the boy, and the feel of her daughter kicking contentedly in her uterus. She chuckled loudly when she saw the toddler pointing excitedly at a squirrel who was peeking cautiously from the bough of one of the big oak trees. "Daddy, look! It's a squillel!" The tall, lanky man turned to look at her at the sound of her chuckling. He smiled softly and kissed the top of his son's silky head. He continued to maintain her gaze until the dog started to bark at the terrified squirrel which darted up the tree. This amused the angelic boy immensely and he jumped exuberantly in his father's arms. The man set him down carefully and watched while his son made his way to the oak tree as fast as his chubby little legs could carry him. In his haste to get to the "squillel", he left behind a colorful trail of woolen accessories that consisted of a hat, a scarf and a pair of mittens. "Daddy, bling me the squillel, please," he implored in a delightful lisp. He then turned to look at his father with beautiful, soulful blue eyes. She groaned silently at the absolute faith and trust the child had in his father, depending on him to make his little world perfect. This was exactly what she wanted for her unborn daughter. The dark-haired man finally got the rambunctious dog to settle down and knelt down beside the boy. He wrapped the red and blue scarf around his son's neck and placed the red woolen hat on his head. After gently wiping a smudge of dirt off the child's plump cheeks, he explained very patiently, "The squirrel went home to have his afternoon nap, buddy." "But...but I want to play with him," he cried and stuck out his full lower lip in a delightful pout. He was a miniature version of his father. They made a stunning sight together. "Well, his mommy called him and you know what that means, don't you?" The little boy thought about this for a moment with an expression of deep concentration on his innocent face. He then sagely nodded his head, expertly raised one eyebrow and replied, "He'd better go then, Daddy, or he'd be in trouble." His father laughed loudly and bent his head to his son. They stood together, the same dark brown hair on father and son being ruffled playfully by the wind while he whispered something into the little boy's ears. They then turned around and looked directly at her. The little cherub's face broke into a charming smile as he ran towards her and flung himself into her arms. "Mommy, mommy..." he cried breathlessly. "We have a secret. Do you wanna know?" He made himself comfortable on her lap and took the delicate gold cross that was resting on her neck into his fingers, touching it briefly before releasing it. Pushing back a silky strand of her auburn hair, she nodded her head and smiled warmly. She was constantly amazed by the physical resemblance he bore to his father. She couldn't resist lowering her face and stealing a quick kiss. Her son embraced her gravid abdomen and proclaimed proudly, "We loveses you and the baby velly, velly much." Scully hugged him tightly and looked up to find Mulder gazing at her intently. His expressive hazel eyes shone brilliantly with happiness. He sat down next to her on the bench and possessively wrapped one long arm around her, enclosing his precious family into his protective embrace. Gently stroking her belly with his other hand, he bent down and placed a soft kiss on the full mound. Lifting his head, he looked deeply into her eyes and whispered huskily, "Yes, son, we do...very, very much."
