"I will hold you up, I will help you stand, I will comfort you when you need a friend." I BELIEVE IN YOU <1/1> By TeaL Scully let herself into her partners apartment feeling extremely uneasy. She hadn't heard from Mulder in two days; he hadn't been answering his phone, nor had he answered the door when she'd knocked on it a couple of minutes ago. It wasn't like him to stay out of touch for so long and if he'd gone to his mothers it wasn't like him to not tell her he was leaving. So, worried about her friend, she entered his apartment and walked slowly through the darkness. Her first impulse had been to find the light switch but she knew from experience there may be many good reasons to not advertise her presence to those that could be possibly waiting for a clear shot down in the street below. 'When did things get so complex?' she wondered as she reached for her gun before realising what she was doing. "Mulder?", she called softly, unsure of announcing her arrival, unsure of who might answer. Silence. Treading quietly through the room she headed for his suddenly newly acquired bedroom, planning on leaving instantly if she found him sleeping. The lecture could wait until morning. As she maneuvered past his couch a tired voice warned, "Go home", through the darkness causing her to jump slightly. "Mulder?", She whispered. "Go home Scully", he told her, more firmly this time. Moving to the front of the couch so she could see him, she stood infront of the figure that took up the whole length of the couch and used her tone of voice to indicate she wasn't planning on leaving just yet. "No Mulder, are you okay? I was worried, you weren't answering your phone." "I wanted to be left alone." "Why?", she asked worriedly, "What happened?" "Scully...", he warned. "Mulder?", her voiced laced with frustration He refused to answer her and they both held their ground. After a brief moment of intense silence, Scully asked almost desperately, "Why are you shutting me out?", and finally received some eye contact. "Because you can't help", he replied coldly. "How do you know?" she persisted. Mulder looked down at the floor briefly, took a deep breath and then once again held her gaze as he answered, "Because you can't bring her back." Scully swallowed, how could she be so stupid, she was fully aware of what the date was today: the anniversary of Samantha's disappearance. She hadn't given it any thought because before today, before this moment, she had never seen the anniversary affect like this. Throughout the six years she'd known him it had passed smoothly and without incident - to her knowledge that is. Until now, this had infact been the one time of the year when he never mentioned her, something she'd perceived as his way of dealing with the loss. "No, you're right, I can't", she finally answered, "But I can help you in your search for her and I can help you through these emotions you are feeling right now." "How?", his tone of voice challenged her and it gave her hope that he wanted her to stay. When he moved so she could sit on the couch she saw it as a definite sign and gingerly sat beside him. "Well..", she said slowly, "I can either sit here and comfort you as you've done for me so many times in the past or I can leave and let you mourn alone, which I'll remember next time you try to help me through something." "I miss her so much", Mulder whispered. Seeing the sadness in his eyes, Scully reached over on impulse and gently embraced him in a comforting hug; she let a sigh of relief escape her lips when she felt his arms slip around her, returning the embrace. Scully couldn't help but wonder if he'd been waiting for her to show up worriedly at his door, knowing she would be too stubborn and too concerned to leave when told to. "We'll find her Mulder," she whispered into his hair, emphasizing the 'we'."You will see her again." Mulder gripped her more tightly, thanking her silently but effectively with his body language. Pulling away Mulder said,"I try to believe I will, I have to believe I will but....", his voice trailed off. "It's hard." Scully finished. Mulder nodded. "She's out there somewhere Scully",he said softly. "And we will find her" Mulder smiled, "Thank you for not leaving me alone" "Mulder did you really believe I could walk out that door after seeing you so upset tonight?" "I didn't just mean tonight" Scully nodded, showing with a small smile that she had realised that after the words had left her mouth. "Mulder, I believe everything we have found and everything we have lost is all a part of a large puzzle and now all we're waiting for is that last important piece to slot into place and make the picture complete; to put everything we've seen into perspective. That last piece will lead us to your sister and as your partner I will stay by your side until we find her." "Are you saying that when my sister is returned to me you're leaving?", he asked in disbelief. "I'm saying when we find her I know in my heart it will be the end of the x-files and we will more than likely be reassigned separately." Pausing, she added softly, "We wont be partners forever." Taking her hand in his, Mulder said without doubt, "But we'll still be friends". "Always" she replied and squeezed his hand as if confirming the statement. Smiling, Mulder tugged her forward gently and into his arms. Scully didn't resist and placed her arms around him feeling like it was the most natural thing in the world; knowing her words had given him a kind of peace, gave her peace. What she didn't know was he perceived her as the light that guided him through the darkness. Through everything that had been proven a lie in his face, one truth forever remained strong and untouched: He believed in her. THE END. C.
