But, well, nothing is mine. And I'm sorry. Oh, But Brent is and so is the psycho and so is the Salt Lake City AD is. That's it. Authors note: Well, Okay, I know in the Game Craig Willmore is actually assigned to Seattle field office, but I love him and the cutie actor that plays him (mmmmmmmm Jordan Lee Williams) and to top it off I'm not creative enough to come up with my own character. That's my cover story anyway, I don't want Jordan to figure out its me sifting through his garbage and peeking through his window at night. So Shhhhhhhhhh. So lets pretend he got a transfer too. 'Kay? You got a problem with that. Good. Oh, and also, lets ignore the fact Scully said she was gonna quit the FBI all together, 'kay? Also, I wrote this about 4 years ago, so go easy J Random FTF quote 'After what you saw last night, after all you've seen, Scully - you cant just walk away' 'I have, I did, its done' (Why am I bothering, we all own the video, and thus know the script off by heart) XxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx 11.21am Salt Lake City Field Office Salt Lake City, Utah Dana Scully sat at her desk typing away at another report for another solved case. Another Bad Guy put behind bars. She loved that feeling. Solving cases. Making a difference. Finally being acknowledged for her work. It wasn't as if she didn't miss the X files and Fox Mulder, but she enjoyed being credited for her work. Being seen as a success in the Bureau. A knock on the doorframe interrupted her thoughts. 'Dana, the Boss man wants to see us' 'Thanks Craig' Scully liked her new partner. She also liked being called by her first name. AND having her office and desk. She sighed, stood up and followed Craig down the hallway to Assistant director Mary Kendall's office. As she entered, she was surprised to find Walter Skinner sitting opposite her boss on a green leather seat. He smiled warmly at her. She hesitantly returned the gesture. 'Agent Scully, Willmore, please take a seat' Kendall gestured to the vacant seats opposite her desk. Scully stole another glance at her former superior as she sat. He spoke first. 'Hey Scully, Hear your doing well for yourself. Solved that big Maroney Case' She smiled at him modestly, her hands fidgeting on her lap. 'Well sir, I didn't do it by myself......Agent Willmore here was the one that apprehended the suspect' 'Now Dana, don't be so humble' Her partner smiled at her, his hazel eyes twinkling, 'that was only because you almost broke your ankle chasing after him. It was your profile and forensic work that led us to him' Scully fidgeted more uncomfortably in her seat, but smiled gratefully at Craig. Skinner sensed her discomfort on changed the subject. 'The reason I'm here agents, is because we need your help' Scully shifted in her seat again. 'We who sir?' 'VCS at headquarters. There's been a spate of murders spanning about a year and the killers been moving cross-country. We're expecting him to hit Salt Lake City in the next week.' 'I assume there's a pattern' 'Yeah, ten murders, male and female, between the ages of nine and seventy-five, all washed of any trace evidence after being killed. Seemingly of self mutilation' 'Self-mutilation? I thought they were murders' 'So it initially appeared, but all the deaths occurred in the same way. Hair was badly shaven, toes removed and finally the wrists slit in downwards motion' Skinner demonstrated this on his own wrist, but substituting a pen for the weapon. 'No instruments were found at the scenes, no evidence of any kind' 'Do you have any leads' Scully began skimming through the file Skinner had handed her. 'No, but its one death per month in a different city each time. From the pattern, Salt Lake City is the next target' 'Scully's eyes shot up form the file 'How exactly do you expect to catch the guy? There doesn't appear to be any link between the victims, you have no leads on the killer. Salt Lake City's a big place' 'That's why we need your help Scully. I'm sending down five of my DC agents who have been with this case from the beginning. We don't expect to catch him before he kills this time, we hope to of course, but we don't expect to. We do however, hope to gather some fresh evidence. This is the first time we've been able to predict with some certainty where he will strike next. Other times the evidence has been weeks old by the time we've become involved....due to them initially appearing as suicides to the local PD. Hopefully, with fresher evidence, we'll be able to love forward with this investigation.' He saw Scully's expression and chuckled. 'I know........but we are running out of options Scully. And we need to stop him.' Scully nodded slowly, her eyes dropping back down to the file in her hands. AD Kendall cleared her throat. 'I expect you both to assist Deputy Director Skinner in anyway he requires' She turned to Skinner. 'Anything to add?' Skinner shook his head and Scully and Willmore got up to leave. XxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx Willmore followed his partner into her office and casually sat on her desk as she positioned herself in her leather desk chair, preparing for the assault. 'Sooooooooooooooooooo, you know the big man from DC, Huh? Is there some sordid affair I should know about?' Scully stared at him for a full minute. 'Oh, come on Dana....I NEED some gossip.' She smiled at him deviously. 'Well, there's no affair YOU should know about Agent Willmore' She laughed as his eyebrows climbed a full inch and he almost fell off the desk. Scully cupped her chin in the palms of her hands and rested her elbows on her desk and looked at him innocently. 'So you wanna know about my dark past eh?' Willmore grinned at her, like a child begging for candy. 'Yep yep.......Puhweeeeeeze Agent Scully' She smiled at him again, blinking innocently again for effect. But he refused to give in. 'Sordid past, sordid past, sordid past' He chanted Scully giggled and gave in. 'Okay.....um, about eight years ago, I was assigned to Fox Mulder in the X files' Willmore's mouth dropped. Scully calmly placed her index finger under his chin and pushed it upward to close his mouth. There was a long pause before he found his voice. 'You? You were assigned to Spooky Mulder?' He continued to stare at her in disbelief. 'Yeah, for like five years I was 'Mrs Spooky'' 'Wow, you slept with Spooky Mulder' 'I didnt say that.' 'But did you?' 'No?' "What about Skinner?' 'Nup, sorry......Do you want to hear this story' Craig sighed "I Suppose, but its no where near as fascinating now' 'Sorry. Anyway, so me and Mulder got really close. Too close really - ' 'But you didn't sleep with him?' he said, incredulity evident in his voice. 'NO!!!!!! We just really close, obsessed with our work. We were, uh, uncovering what Mulder believed was a huge government conspiracy involving extraterrestrials and viruses. Men, who worked for no one and used innocent civilian's to serve their own selfish agendas.' She saw his expression. 'Uh huh.' Was all he said. She gave him a weak smile. 'Eight years ago I would've given the story that exact same expression Craig, actually, I think I did. But you haven't seen the things I have' 'I'll take your word on that........so, do you miss him?' 'Him who?' Willmore gave her a 'you know who' look and she exhaled slowly. 'I don't regret leaving him if that's what you mean' 'We both know that's not what I mean' She sighed 'Okay, yes I miss him. But that's to be expected, he did so much for me' Her hand went instinctively to the back of her neck - as if checking for the chip. Willmore looked at her curiously 'What - ' he began, but was interrupted by Skinner's entrance. Scully stood. 'Sir?' Skinner gestured to the hallway. 'Uh, agent Scully, may I speak to you for a moment' Scully went to move for the door, but Willmore stopped her. 'Uh, Sir, this is actually Dana's office, so I'll leave' He stepped past the Deputy Director and out of the office. Skinner gestured for Scully to sit, closed the door behind him and then took the seat opposite her. There was a long pause. Skinner spoke first. 'So, how have you been. Sometimes I hear about you, about the work your doing here.' Scully considered him. 'I've been okay. Actually, pretty good.....Its work I can deal with. You now, it's nice to be able to, uh, actually discover the scientific explanation. To do an autopsy and announce the cause of death without any doubt.' She smiled at him. 'But its also...um....' He finished her sentence 'monotonous in comparison?' Scully just looked at him. 'In comparison to what exactly sir?' 'The X-Files, Mulder. I understand' Scully nodded once. 'Uh, sir, .......how's he doing?' Skinner smiled faintly. 'He's fine agent. I think he's finally found his feet again' 'Is he sleeping? Has he found Samantha?' He seems fine. He's handling things well in VICAP considering. He, uh, misses you though. He doesn't say anything, but he has a picture of you in his desk drawer'. She was slightly taken aback even though she had a picture of him in hers. She smiled faintly. 'What about Samantha?' Her superior shook his head sadly. She sighed. 'I should've stayed' 'He doesn't blame you for leaving Dana' She nodded and averted her gaze so Skinner wouldn't notice the unshed tears stinging her eyes. Sensing her discomfort for the second time that day, Skinner stood and made his way to the door. 'The DC agents will be here in the morning'. She nodded to his back. XxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx Scully arrived at work early the next morning. But apparently not early enough. She was ushered into the conference room by AD Kendall. "The DC agents are all ready here Dana. They're waiting for you.' Scully pushed open the door and found the room full of male agents, but she only counted four agents plus Skinner. Her eyes narrowed and she wondered where the fifth one was. She sighed. She recognized only two of the agents from the VCS.....Beatty and Fuller, but she figured the others joined after she left headquarters. 'Hey' Willmore came up behind her and tapped her shoulder. 'Hows Brent?' She smiled at him uneasily. A sick was forming in her stomach. 'He's good. We're, uh, going out tonight.' 'Have fun......I'm gonna mingle' She smiled again, a little more broadly this time. 'Kiss ass.' He put his hand on his chest and mouth 'moi?' in mock surprise. She slapped his arm playfully and he moved to the other side of the room. She watched him introduce himself to agent Fuller for a few moments then the uneasiness washed over her again. She shifted from one foot to the other while her stomach did flip-flops. She wished she knew what was causing it. Skinner came over to her, concern etched over his face. 'Agent Scully? I, need.....to tell you something........' The Deputy Director played uncomfortably with his glasses and then with his tie. However, Scully was no longer paying attention. She suddenly knew what was causing her own uneasiness. She saw it. Actually she saw him. Fox fucking Mulder. Her legs turned to jelly and she slumped unceremoniously into the nearest chair. She gulped down the feeling that she was about to vomit and passed a hand over her face. Finally she bit her lip and looked at him. His back was to her, giving her no indication that he'd seen her. Skinner knelt next to her, possibly in an attempt to hide her from her former partner. Possibly not. He looked at her in the eye and braced himself for the onslaught. But all he received was a sad whisper. 'Why didn't you tell me....I could've prepared myself for this....why?' She bit her bottom lip again and looked at him with scared blue eyes. 'I didn't know until this morning. He wasn't going to come. But Agent Clarks wife went into labor last night, and since it was Mulder's profile, he was the obvious last minute replacement.' Scully nodded slowly. 'Scully, if I'd known, I would've told you......and Scully.' She looked up at him. 'I don't think he's aware your still assigned here' She absorbed this information as best she could and watched Mulder finally turn around and look in her direction. After two sweeps of the room, his gaze fell on her. She tried to hold it, but his eyes flickered away as quickly as they had found her. She sighed. 'Agents.....Agents...Now that we are all here, could we please make a start' AD Kendall gestured toward the seats surrounding the long mahogany conference table. Mulder purposely sat as far away from his partner as possible, without isolating himself. He didn't know why he felt uncomfortable having Scully in the same room but he did. That woman meant everything to him. But he let her go. He let her walk out of his apartment and into the elevator while he sat among the photographs in a shocked silence. Of course he'd tried to call her once he'd recovered...and got her answering machine. Knocked on her door and got no reply. Finally he had gone to her mothers and found out she'd accepted the transfer to Salt Lake City and had moved there the day before. Scully watched Mulder present his profile *Still as brilliant as always* She thought. It was thorough, but she still got the feeling he was leaving something out. Keeping something to himself. An important piece of the puzzle he didn't want to share. Occasionally his eyes would find hers intently watching him, but then they would quickly move on. After the briefing, the agents dispersed for the day, and Scully and Mulder did not see each other. XxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx Mulder was laying on his bed, staring blankly at the TV set, clicking aimlessly with the remote and of course munching on sunflower seeds. He was just on the verge of having made the biggest pile of shells ever when he heard a familiar rapping on the door. *Couldn't be* He sighed at his own stupidity and hoped whoever it was would soon leave him alone. Then the voice. That sweet voice. 'Mulder? Mulder.......are you there? Um, its me. Scully. I want you to talk but I'll understand if you don't want to see -' The door swung open. 'Mulder?!' He was staring at her, one elbow resting on the edge of the open door, the other hand holding the door frame for support, but also, maybe to prevent Scully from entering on her own accord. He spoke slowly and deliberately. 'How did you find me?' She looked around him and saw the bags of seeds, the neglected TV remote *some things never change* she thought. She spoke hesitantly, as if offering a peace treaty. 'I uh, followed the trail of sunflower seeds' She took in his expression. 'oh, okay, this is where we also came when we were on a case in Salt Lake City Mulder. I've been here three years, I know the manager.' He nodded. 'Can I come in?' He nodded again and removed his arm to let her in. She sat uncomfomtably on the edge of his bed. He sat in the armchair in the corner of the room, essentially hiding himself in the twilight shadows. Neither spoke. *I cancelled my date with Brent for this* Scully thought. She cleared her throat. 'What aren't you saying about this case Mulder?' 'Excuse me?' His voice betrayed surprise mingled with anger and possibly fear. 'Mulder, granted it's been three years, but I still know you. There's something you know about this case that you are keeping to yourself' 'Is this the reason you came to see me Scully?' 'Right now, that's a good a reason as any.' Yet another prolonged silence. Finally he moved to sit next to her on the bed. She turned to face him. Mulder hesitated before speaking, 'Scully......how have you been. Um......the chip.......' his voice caught in his throat. Scully reached out and touched his arm lightly, an act that seemed so natural it surprised them both. She chose to ignore the shiver that made its way down her spine. 'Mulder.....I'm fine. Really. I go for regular check up. The chips still there and it appears to be doing its job.' He looked at her. 'Really?' He breathed the word in disbelief. She smiled 'Really.' He shifted uneasily and gazed at the stain on the wall. Finally he said 'because I found something troubling. And I didn't consider it until I saw you today. I didn't expect you to be still here.' He paused again. 'Mulder, what is it?' Mulder set his jaw. 'I've found something......in the bodies. I asked the pathologist to keep it to herself, but considering the evidence its important that you know' She looked at him, urging him to continue. 'All the victims had microchips in the base of their necks. And I......' He corrected himself '......we have to consider the possibility that you Scully are the next potential victim. All because of that damned chip. Her voice rose slightly as she controlled the urge to cry. 'Is that why you came here?' 'No, I told you, I didn't think you'd still be here. But I'm happy I came. I've been wanting to see you. I've always regretted letting you get into that elevator. I miss you. There was so much you should've known. So much I should've told you. A tear slipped down his cheek. He rubbed it away furiously, an act that made Scully's own chin quiver. Mulder cupped it in his hand and sighed deeply in a poor attempt to prevent the tears from coming. Mulder removed his hand from her chin and changed the subject to save them both. 'So, whatcha been up to? I heard about the Maroney case' She raised her eyebrows. 'You did?' 'Course, its all over headquarters. Your report was one of the best I've read. Save for my own of course.' She smiled. 'Oh, of course.' He returned the smile before turning serious again. 'Your mom was real proud of you.' She raised her eyebrows again. 'My Mom' 'Yeah, I've been talking to her a lot lately. Seeing how you've been. I've been worried about you. I, uh, couldn't work up enough courage to actually call you though.' She smiled, then saddened. 'I'm sorry I left.' He grinned. 'No your not, you just miss me.' 'In your dreams' He chuckled. 'So Mulder, how's work? How's Diana?' Scully shuddered at having to mention 'Mulder's chick-a-dee'. 'Well, work sucks, but mostly because Skinners promotion to Deputy Director went to his head' He rolled his eyes for effect. 'Um, Diana recovered from the gunshot wound, but left soon after you did. I was a wreck when you went Scully....a real pain in the ass for anyone who was concerned for my welfare.' Scully opened her mouth to speak but he lifted his hand to silence her. 'Believe it or not I do have friends Scully.' 'You wound me deeply, as if I was ever gonna suggest such a thing!' 'Uh huh. Anyways, Diana tried to get too close way to soon so I pushed her away. I didn't want her. Or the gunmen. Or My mother. Or Skinner. All I wanted was you. And Diana was the only one that didn't understand that. But I didn't realise how much I still want you until I saw you today. That's why I avoided you. I didn't want to tell you, force you into coming back when you didn't want to.' 'I've missed you too Mulder. I've tried to replace you' *Sorry Brent, you're cute, but you're not Mulder* 'With guys, with work, you have no idea how hard it was for me not to drop everything and come running back' 'Oh, I have some idea, probably about as much as I wanted to drop everything and drag you back kicking and screaming.' They smiled. 'Why didn't you come back. If that's what you wanted. I wanted it.' 'Yeah, but its not what you *needed*. You needed - *need* me as far away as possible. I've only held you back' 'Scully - ' 'Why was assigned to you in the first place Mulder? To reign you in, to shut you down' 'But you saved me Scully, as difficult and frustrating as it is sometimes your goddamn strict rationalization has saved me a thousand times over. You've keep me honest, you've made me a whole person. I owe you everything Scully, and you owe me nothing.' As she listened to his garbled confession, her heart slowly and painfully broke in two. He had just told her, in his own amazing way that he loved her. 'Mulder-' She pressed his forehead against her own - forcing him to look directly into her eyes. They were both breathing very deeply. She spoke through many layers of emotion. 'I love you......I'll love you forever.' He pulled her into a tight embrace and nuzzled her neck, exulting in the familiarity of her scents. He spoke with just as much emotion. 'I love you.' She sighed deeply *what am I gonna tell Brent* Suddenly he pulled away, but his hand still rested lightly on her shoulders, he gazed, pleadingly into her eyes. 'Come back. Skinner has a standing offer that he'll organize my transfer back to the X files - and yours - if we ever want it.' She looked at him confused. 'But, Mulder, they were shut down.' 'Yes, but reopened after the corn crops. After you left a man, that well-manicured English man from the Syndicate told me of the extent of the project. It stretches to Antarctica Scully. I had enough evidence for the District Attorney to reopen them.' 'But you chose not to continue?' 'I didn't see the point. You were gone. I didn't want to go on alone. I didn't think I could've.' He squeezed her shoulders for emphasis. She dipped her head, wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head on his chest. She listened to his heart beating. Much faster than was to be expected. A faint smile played across her lips as he rested his cheek on her head. Finally they separated. 'All right, I'll think about it. There's still stuff for me to do here though.' She stood to leave, but he grabbed her wrist, 'Scully -' 'I promise you, I'll think about it.' And with that, she was gone. XxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx Scully barely slept. She tossed and turned the entire night, waking and then forcing Brent to sleep on the couch. She dreamt of Mulder, of Skinner, of Brent, of Emily, of Craig, of her mother, of her abduction. By morning she had written five pros and cons lists, but she stubbornly refused to admit to herself that she already knew the answer. When she finally got out of bed, she grabbed her robe and padded out to the living room. Brent was there, staring at the TV. At first she was surprised until she remembered she had called him after she had got back from the motel. She had said she'd wanted to talk, but they'd ended up having wild, passionate sex instead. A delaying tactic. She shook off the pang of guilt that threatened to overwhelm her. She sighed and moved over to him. He smiled, pulled her onto his lap and began nuzzling her ear. She giggled despite herself. She turned her head to kiss him forcefully on the lips. Finally She pulled away, sighing into his mouth. 'We need to talk Brent' He looked at her concerned. 'Last time you said that we ended up having amazing sex....so, Okay, lets talk!!' He looked at her expectantly, but then took in her expression and dropped the act. 'About?' 'About us. I've had an offer, a transfer back to DC, to work with Mulder again, on the X-Files, the stuff I enjoy, the stuff I find challenging.' 'And your asking what? My permission? If I want to go?' 'No, I'm just saying there's an offer and if you want we could move to DC. If you don't, fine, we'll just stay here' 'You want to go back.' 'Yes, but only if you want to.' 'Is it more dangerous?' 'Arguably' 'My life's here.....' 'Fine, we'll stay. I understand' She sighed. But Brent got up, depositing her on the couch. 'You go Dana, its obvious you want to be with him over me. Do you love him?' 'In a way.' 'Uh huh. Have a nice life Dana.' 'Brent!!' But her heart wasn't in it. She knew he as right, she wanted Mulder more than him. The door closed. XxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXxXx Two weeks later Mulder bounded into the office where Scully was still unpacking boxes. They'd solved the mutilation case. Some psycho was killing alien abductees because he was angry he himself wasn't 'chosen'. 'Hey Scully, new case...invisible man in Cincinnati.' 'Mulder i just got back. You've already lined up four reports for me and now you want to me to run off to Cincinnati with you to look for a man who apparently can't be seen. Honestly, I think you just wanted me back as a secretary and someone to share the blame with when you got audited. 'Yep, its good to have you back. Wanna see the file?' He passed it over the desk to her. 'Muuuuldeeeer' she said exasperatedly 'all off these witnesses have either been in a VERY crowded place where anyone can disappear, or incapacitated in some way.' She from read the list 'Drunk, high, drunk... that's pretty thin evidence for an investigation.' 'Ah, but explain to me why they all occurred in Cincinnati Agent Scully.' 'Probably because the story spread, Agent Mulder. Its common. A person thinks he or she sees something unusual, tells someone else who then thinks they saw the same thing and so on. There have been several well documented studies pertaining to this form of dementia, its common within.....' Mulder tuned out. He hadn't realized how much he'd missed this. 'Welcome back Scully.'
