field

MSR ~ ROMANCE
-----------------------

“But Miss Scully! You can’t go out now! It’s much to cold! You catch
your death
from fever!”
Dana stood by the door, gathering her lace gloves, “Oh, don’t fret so much,
Bess!” She
smiled at her maid.
Bess stood tall, her wrinkled face turning stern, “Dana Katherine! You can’t go
out
without an escort!”
Melissa, who had been sitting in a chair by the front door, stood up and smiled
at her
sister. “Well, I’ll escort her.”
Bess stood her ground, “She needs a gentleman to escort her, not another young
lady!”
Melissa laughed, “We won’t go far, back in an hour, I promise. I’ll watch her, I
can do
that.”
Bess shook her head, “Your father will have me throttled if you return with
little as a
scratch!”
Melissa reached for her riding gloves that rested on the small table by the
front door,
“Bess, I think you need to relax.”
Dana pulled the door open, “Right, Bess. Don’t be such a stick in the mud!”
Bess was fuming, she threw up her hands in frustration, “Someone help me!”

Lord Fox Mulder urged his horse to jump over a small fence, Walter
Skinner
wasn’t far behind. “Fox, I think that you should be a bit more careful around
Lady Allistar.
She heard that you were in the market for a wife and now every lady from here to
London
is buzzing!”
Mulder turned his horse around to face Walter, “I don’t see why it’s any of her
concern,
she’s already married and I wouldn’t take her for all the gold in the King’s
coffers!”
“Well, my Lord, you must know what a gossip she is. And she’s looking to marry
her
daughter off to someone who has an unblemished title.”
“And that would be me?”
“Why, yes.” Walter trotted his horse along beside Mulder’s.
Mulder moaned, “I don’t think I want to marry anyone from London. I’m not very
fond of
their parties and gossip. And they call themselves ‘polite society’ as if the
common folk
were dirt.”
Walter laughed, “I find it quite humorous, you know how vicious those women in
the
London social circles can be. Gossiping about anything and everything. You’re
the latest
topic, I heard.”
“I believed you just gossiped, Walter.” Mulder laughed at his companion.

“Dana! SLOW DOWN!” Melissa shouted as she raced after her sister.
Dana ignored Melissa’s pleas and continued on the dirt path. Her green cloak
flapping in
the wind. The breeze was cold, nipping at her face. She placed the hood over her
head,
trying to ignore the cold. Melissa was finally forced to stop, she feared her
horse would
collapse from under her. She let the horse rest for a bit, watching her sister
ride off in the
distance, “What are we going to do with that girl?” She asked her mare.
The horse neighed in response, shaking it’s head.

Dana was almost to the trees when she realized that her sister was
gone.
“Melissa?”
The only sound she heard was the cold wind. She wanted to go home and sit in
front of
the fire with a cup of tea. But first, she needed to find Melissa. Her thoughts
shattered
when she felt the horse buck beneath her. She let out a shocked scream, not
knowing what
was happening. Something had spooked the horse, terrified it. Dana caught a
glimpse of
the cause..... a snake! Before she knew what was happening, she was falling.
Dana braced
herself for impact, but it didn’t help her much. She felt the pain through her
back and her
head..... then blackness.

Mulder raced his companion over the fences and through the final
fields.
“WALTER! You’re getting old!”
“OLD? I’ll be old the day you settle.”
“Settle with what?”
“A wife, of course!” He called as he made his approach towards the next fence.
“I’d prefer a dog, they don’t bite or bark as hard!”
Walter slowed when something caught his eye. “MULDER! Look!”
The younger man followed Walter over the next fence and he gasped, “A girl!”
She was laying crumpled against the grass. Her dress was dark green and her
cloak
matched. Her red hair was fanned around her head. Mulder raced to her,
dismounting
quickly. Seeing that she was still breathing, he checked to see if she was
bleeding. Some
cuts along her arm, her cloak was slightly torn and so was the hem of her dress.
Her neck
didn’t seemed to be damaged, he looked at Walter, “Do you know who she is?”
Walter shook his head, “I’ve never laid eyes on her in my life.”
Her hair was red, her skin was pale and she looked like she would catch her
death of cold.
Taking off his own cloak, he wrapped her in it, the wind was starting to become
more
harsh. Walter searched the hills, “Here comes another young lady.”
“Dana! What have you done to her?” The woman got off her horse and raced towards
them.
Mulder stepped back, “Dana? Is that her name?”
“Yes, who are you?”
“Lord Mulder and this is Walter Skinner. Who are you?”
“Miss Melissa Scully, this is my sister!”
“I think you should come to my home where we can tend to her, it’s too cold out
here and
the rain will start soon.”
The sky was now gray and gloomy. Walter moved forward, lifting the limp woman
into his
arms, “She’s light as a feather!” He commented.
Mulder got onto his horse, Walter handed him the young maiden. Melissa seemed to
be
upset, “Stop! Be careful! She’s hurt!”
Mulder was getting very annoyed with her, he wrapped one arm around Dana’s waist
and
kept his free hand on the reins. “Follow us, Miss Scully.”

Dana’s eyes snapped open and she was hit with a flow of pain that
spread from her
head all the way down to her back. She moaned, “Melissa....”
Her vision finally cleared and she saw that she wasn’t at home in her bed! She
darted her
eyes around, she was laying on a canopy bed! The large window over looked a
pond, and
the walls where white and blue. She felt a warm hand on her arm, “Dana?” A deep
male
voice asked.
She gasped, too surprised to speak.
He knelt down beside the bed, “Can you hear me?”
Finally returning to her senses, she tried to get away. She wasn’t very fond of
waking up
in a strange house with a strange man to find herself in a compromising
position. He tried
to grab her arm, but she moved away quickly. He caught her while she made her
way
around the other side of the bed and helped her back into the covers, “You need
to stay
still, I imagine that you are in a great deal of pain!”
She did the only thing she could do, she slapped him. Her fingers stung and he
looked
shocked. Melissa appeared in the doorway, “Dana, you’re awake! I was so worried-
Lord
Mulder? What is wrong?”
He shook his head, “Nothing, I’ll leave you with your sister.” He turned to exit
the room.
Dana starred at her sister, “You know him?”
“He helped you, this is his house.”
“He helped me?” She was mortified! She had just slapped the man who had helped
her!
Helped her from what?
“What happened?” Dana asked, confused.
“You fell off your horse, the foul beast got away. He and his companion, Walter
Skinner,
found you and tended to your wounds.”
“Oh, God! I smacked him!”
Melissa’s mouth fell open in surprise, “What? Dana, what’s wrong with you?!”

Walter sat in the library, finishing the morning news paper. “You’re
latest article is
on the front page of the ‘COURT REVEIW’ this morning. Have you seen it?”
“I wrote the article, of course I saw it!”
Mulder would often write of political issues around the Royal Court. This week’s
topic
was the King’s marriage to Princess Catherine and of a conspiracy concerning the
King’s
advisor, Martin Waterstone. He got many comments, some agreed, others didn’t.
There
was one particular writer who often disagreed with him. A certain D.K. Smithson.
The
man always tried to prove him wrong! “If I ever meet D.K. Smithson, I’m going to
beat
him with a club!” Mulder threw the paper into the fire, watching it burn to
ashes.
Frohike, Mulder’s faithful butler, entered. “Sir, a gentleman has arrived.
William Scully,
my Lord.”
Mulder jumped to his feet, Dana’s and Melissa’s father had arrived to retrieve
his
daughters. He wondered if they were going to be punished. He greeted the older
man and
offered him tea, but he declined. “I would like to get Dana home and to a doctor
as soon
as I can. She’s always been fragile.”
Mulder could still feel the sting of her slap against his face, obviously this
man didn’t
know the meaning of fragile! “They’re in the bedroom, I’ll show you.”

William Scully entered the large bedroom, his eyes first falling on
his youngest
daughter in the huge bed. Her eyes were closed and her face flushed. Melissa
stood up,
“I’m glad you came, father. Dana’s started with a fever!”
He went to the bed, brushing her red stands of hair away from her flushed face,
“Dana?
Are you all right?”
She opened her eyes, “I want to go home.”
Mulder and William helped her out of the bed and out to the carriage. Melissa
thanked him
and Walter for their help, and got into the carriage with her sister. William
smiled at them,
“Thank goodness you came along, Lord knows what would have happened to her.
Perhaps it was fate that you can riding along when you did.”
Walter laughed, “I’m not really a believer in fate or destiny, but this could
have just been
good luck.”
William Scully nodded, “Thank you for your help, will you two be attending the
King’s
engagement party this season?”
Walter was about to say ‘no’ when Mulder cut in, “Are you going to be there,
Sir?”
“Yes, I’m very close with the King. He’s going to need all the moral support he
can get!”
Mulder laughed, “We’ve been looking forward to the engagement party. We might
even
remain to attend the actual wedding!”
Walter was astonished at his friend’s words, but he remained silent.
After the Scully’s carriage had disappeared into the distance, Walter finally
spoke! “If
memory serves me correctly, you said that you wouldn’t go to the King’s
engagement.”
“Did I?”
“What made you change your mind?” Walter asked curiously as he turned to go
inside.
“Miss Scully.”
“Melissa?” Walter asked.
“Dana. My damsel in distress.”

Dana finished writing on the envelope and handed it to her maid,
“Send this to the
‘Court Review’ immediately, Bess.”
Bess picked up the note, “What is it, if I may ask? Why are you writing to that
newspaper?”
“I have a comment to the editor.” She said calmly, getting up from her seat,
wincing with
pain.
Bess rushed to her aid, helping her back into her bed, “You have to rest if you
want to go
to the engagement party in two days, Miss Dana. You need sleep and perhaps a
back
rub-”
“All in good time, hurry and deliver the note, please. It’s urgent, Bess.”
Bess reluctantly left Dana’s bed chamber to have one of the stable boys deliver
the note.
Dana sighed, the pain had passed and she felt at ease. Melissa entered her room,
not
bothering to be silent! “Dana! How do you feel? Does it hurt? Can I get you
something?”
“Go away, I can’t sleep with all this noise!”
Melissa, however, was in no mood to be silent. “Don’t you think that Lord Mulder
is
charming? Even if you did smack him and all.....”
Dana moaned, remembering the force of her hand to his face, “I’ll never forgive
myself.
Good thing we won’t ever see him again.”
Melissa laughed, “Yes we will! He’ll be at the engagement party in two nights.
Don’t you
love it here in London? It’s so good to be back, I hate living out in the
country. It gets
lonesome.”
Dana’s eyes opened, “Lord Mulder will be at the engagement party?”
Melissa nodded, “To attract his attention, we’ll have to wear the finest
dresses! Mother
already sent for them, your dress is white. You’ll look lovely.....”

By the time the party rolled around, Dana had fully recovered from
her fall. She
stood tall, starring at the mirror. She was wearing her white dress, with a
large open neck,
revealing her pale skin. It was tight around her waist, it had gold embodied on
the hems
and large puffy sleeves. Dana tied her hair above her head, letting a few curls
fall around
her face. She sighed, “What am I going to do there?”
Melissa sat on the bed, smiling, “You look heavenly, you’re going to attract
much
attention tonight from the gentlemen.”
Dana rolled her eyes, “Is that all you think about?”
Melissa laughed, “I would like to see my sister wed to someone nice, if you
don’t mind.”
She turned around to face Melissa, “I will wed when I’m good and ready, I don’t
need
your help or interference.”
Melissa sighed happily, “I hope Lord Mulder shows tonight. He looked so grand in
his
riding breeches, imagine how he’d look in formal attire!”
Dana grabbed a pillow from the bed and threw it at her sister.

Walter entered Mulder’s room, watching him as he examined his
reflection. He
turned around to look at Walter, “Well, how do I look?”
“Very nice, my Lord.”
He grinned, “I hope I can attract a certain young ladies attention.”
Walter was baffled for a moment, but then it came to him, “Do you mean Dana
Scully?”
“Yes.”
“Did it ever occur to you that she already might have a suitor?”
“I have asked around, no one had heard anything.”
“Let him go after who he wishes, perhaps she’ll return the affection.” A female
voice said
from the door.
Both men turned to see Samantha, Mulder’s younger sister and only sibling,
standing. She
had a pale blue dress on, her brown hair a cascade of curls around her
shoulders, “Do you
approve?” She asked Walter, not her brother.
Mulder intervened, “Samantha...... where did the dress come from?”
“I had Madam Marian tailor it for me. How would I fair against the other ladies
at the
court?”
Walter put on his gloves, “Just fine, Miss Samantha. Now, we should be off.
Would
Langley and Byers be at this party?” He asked Mulder.
Mulder shrugged, “I think that Langley will avoid it at all costs..... but Byers
is coming
tonight. Come, we have a party to attend, our King is getting married.”

Dana entered the large room with her father and mother, Melissa wasn’t
far behind.
Her brothers hadn’t wanted to come, they were all too far away to attend the
engagement
party. Melissa scanned the crowd, “Look! There is Adam, your old dance partner
from
Joshua’s school! Why don’t we go and talk with him?”
Dana approached Adam, a smile pasted onto her face. He grinned, “Dana Scully,
where
have you been hiding?”
“Out in the country, it’s so boring I could simply die.”
He laughed, “Would you care for a dance?”
She smiled, “I’d love to.”
She let him lead her into a waltz, swaying from side to side and catching the
eyes of
others. Her father was watching her carefully, she knew he was. And she could
just
imagine the grin on Melissa’s face! The crowd began to stir after they stopped
dancing.
Adam looked around, “I suppose someone important has just arrived.” He said,
trying to
look over the heads of others.
The crowd began to thin and she caught a glimpse of Lord Mulder. She flushed,
“It’s Lord
Mulder, let us get out of here.”
“Leave? Now? Why?”
“I.....” She caught a glimpse of the woman next to him. She was wearing a pale
blue dress
and her hair was brown and in curls. Dana turned back to Adam, “All right then,
should
we continue dancing?”
He nodded, taking her hands into his, “Whatever you say, madam.”

Mulder politely smiled at the ladies who were swarming around him.
He took
Samantha and escorted her to the center of the crowd, “I trust that you will
stay with
Walter.”
“I don’t require a chaperone, Fox.” She hissed.
He shook his head, “Trust me, Samantha. You’ll thank me later on. I’ll be back
later on.”
He left his sister in the care of Walter Skinner in search of the young lady who
had lured
him here tonight. He saw a flash of her red hair in the crowd of dancers. She
was with a
young man, she was wearing a white dress that made her look like an angel come
to earth.
He bit his lip in frustration, he’d have to wait for the young gentleman to
leave her side.
He awaited in the corner patiently. Watching them as she laughed at his comments
and he
waltzed her around the room. Finally, the music ended and another dance began.
The
young man led her to the drinks, handing her one. Mulder jumped up to his feet
and
approached, “Miss Scully, isn’t it?”
She turned around and flushed upon seeing his face, “Lo....Lord...Mulder! How
pleasant...
to see you. This is my friend, Adam. Adam, this is Lord Mulder.”
Adam politely greeted the older gentleman, “And how do you know Dana?”
Dana shot him a nervous glance, “I fell off my horse a week ago and he helped
me.”
Adam raised an eyebrow, “Really? How interesting-”
Mulder, getting annoyed with young Adam, smiled at Dana. “Would you care to
dance?”
She nervously glanced at Adam, “Of course.”

“Do I scare you, Miss Scully?” He asked as they danced.
She seemed surprised by the question, “Scare me? No. Not at all. What makes you
think
that?”
“Just now, I thought I made you nervous.”
“A bit embarrassed.” She looked away from his eyes, her face turning pink.
“Have I embarrassed you? I’m sorry-”
“No, well..... I’ll never forgive myself for hitting you when you helped me! I
was just so
scared and made such a fool out of myself-”
“Think nothing of it. I would also become defensive if I woke up in a strange
place to find
a strange person looming over me. It’s perfectly understandable. Don’t mention
it again.”
She finally relaxed into the dance and started to enjoy herself a bit.... but
Mulder still made
her a bit nervous.

Walter shook his head as he watched Mulder advance towards the
young Miss
Scully. Samantha wasn’t far behind, “Is that who he’s after?”
He nodded, “Can’t blame him, she is a sight.”
Samantha nodded, “I doubt that he’ll let her slip from his grasp. Should I start
arranging a
wedding?”
Walter shook his head, “Not yet. I first want to see if he scares her off.”
Samantha laughed, her eyes shinning, “Indeed!”

The engagement party had been a grand success! Mulder had been
getting
glances from the other ladies all night, and they were giving Dana cold stares.
He was very
proud of himself for catching everyone’s eye, but Dana Scully wasn’t all that
impressed.
After they had finished their third dance, she retreated to her mother’s side,
where he
didn’t follow. Walter finally approached him, “I see you’ve scared the poor girl
off.”
“I suppose I was a bit forward.” He mussed.
Samantha came up from behind them, “Fox, now what are you going to do? Why don’t
you just leave her alone?”
“I don’t think that’s possible, Samantha.” He finished his drink, “I doubt I’ll
make
anymore progress tonight. Why don’t we leave?”

Melissa was bubbling with excitement when they returned back to
the house.
“Did you see him dancing with Dana, Mother?”
Margaret nodded, “Yes, I did. I’m surprised he’s taken in interest in one of my
girls.”
Melissa’s mouth fell open, “Are we that hideous, Mother?”
“No, darling! It’s just that we don’t spend much time in the city and all. We
aren’t in many
of the polite society social circles.”
“Well, that has to change. How else is Lord Mulder going to spend time with
Dana?”
Melissa asked.
Dana burst into the room, “I don’t like him, Mother! He’s odd and a bit forward!
I would
never marry him!”
Margaret nodded, “We were just talking about it, Dana. You will marry whoever
you
chose. I’m very fond of Adam-”
“We’re just friends.” Dana said as she sat down at the table.
Melissa scoffed, “Does Adam know that?”
“Melissa! That will be enough. Leave your sister alone. Dana, have you chosen
the dress
you’re going to wear tomorrow morning?”
“For what?” She asked, pouring herself some water.
“For the soirée! You are going-”
“But Mother! What am I going to do there? There is no one to talk to!”
“You can have your political debates whenever you want, D.K. Smithson!”
Margaret raised a brow, “Who on Earth is D.K. Smithson?”
Dana was furious that her sister had almost let her secret out, “A writer,
Mother, for the
Court Review! One of my favorites.”
“Well, Dana, forget the review because you have to study.”
Melissa quickly escaped her sister’s clutches, retreating to her bedroom. “I’ll
kill you,
Melissa!”
Her sister laughed from the other side of the bolted door, “No you won’t! You
need me to
help you.”
“Help with what?”
“Help you snag Lord Mulder, of course!”
Dana screamed and returned to her room. “Lord Mulder is an arrogant, power
hungry,
evil pig! I won’t marry him!”

A month in London passed, and Mulder wasn’t getting closer to
winning Dana’s
favor. He was suddenly struck with a brilliant idea when he heard from her
father that she
fenced. “What idea, Fox?” Samantha asked, finishing her tea.
“Walter and I will fence in front of her. Walter, you shall make me look so bad
that when I
challenge her..... she’ll accept. Thinking that she’ll beat me, I’ll turn the
tables and have
her pinned! But before fighting her, we’ll make a bet. Her debt to me will be
her hand-”
“What will her father say? Have you gone mad, Fox?” Samantha hissed.
“I’ll ask her father first, of course. I’m still a gentleman. Only if he is
willing to give me
her hand, will I duel her.”
Samantha rolled her eyes, “The Scully’s won’t ever force their daughters into
marriages
they don’t want! If Dana Scully didn’t want to marry you, she wouldn’t. Even if
her father
had given permission.”
“That’s why I need her to think she owes me a debt.” Mulder said calmly.
Samantha moaned, “My brother is a sneaking rodent!”
Walter laughed, “Don’t fret, Samantha. He won’t really force her into a marriage
she
doesn’t want. But if she should say no, he’ll try again. And Again. And again!”
Mulder nodded, “If you want something, you must be persistent.”

Dana and Melissa walked into the empty ball room. The other guests
had
proceeded to the gardens. They were in the home of Phoebe Green, their host.
The two
sisters had wondered off because they had gotten bored and were in search of the
art
gallery. A woman wearing a pink dress entered, “Hello. I do not believe that
we’ve met. I
am Samantha Mulder.”
Melissa’s mouth fell open, “Mulder? Any relation to Lord Mulder?” She was hoping
that
she wasn’t his wife, that meant Dana was being toyed with.
“I’m his younger sister. And you two?”
Melissa introduced them and the three started chatting away as if they’d been
old friends.
Samantha’s head came up, “Did you hear that?”
“What?” Dana asked, looking around.
“Come, in the back garden.”
She led the way to a small court yard. Wearing the proper masks, Walter and
Mulder were
fencing. Mulder was tripping and falling and making no progress. Melissa smiled,
“Dana,
look at how awful he is!”
Samantha nodded, “My brother never really learned to fence well.”
“I can see that.” Dana said coldly.
“YEILD!” Walter shouted.
Mulder dropped his weapon and put up his hands, “I yield.”
Samantha looked at Dana, “Do you fence?”
“OF course she does, she’s excellent at it!” Melissa cut in.
Dana shot her sister a look, “Yes, a bit.”
Mulder approached, “Melissa, you claim that she is excellent at it?”
Melissa nodded, “The very best, my Lord.”
“Are you up for a challenge, Miss Dana Scully?”
“Challenge?”
“I challenge you to a match. The winner gets whatever favor or prize he or SHE
wishes.”
Dana took a step back, glaring at her sister for being foolish. Samantha
laughed, “Go on,
Dana. Didn’t you just see that he doesn’t know what he’s doing?”
“All right,” Dana said, gathering courage, “I accept.”

She whirled to the side, trying to trip him. He moved quickly
and backed her
up against a court yard wall. She cursed herself for being so stupid. Ducking
under his
arm, she escaped out into the open. By then she had realized that she had been
tricked.
Lord Mulder knew exactly what he was doing! He charged towards her, and to her
dismay, she lost her footing and fell backwards. She winced with pain, her back
was still
recovering from the riding incident! He pointed his weapon at her, “Yield, Miss
Scully?”
Her teacher had taught her when it was time to give up, and she knew he had one.
Fairly.... more or less. “I yield.” She gasped for breath.
He grinned, looking like a little boy getting his deserved treat, “Now, would
you like to
know what prize I wish to obtain?”
She let out a soft moan, struggling to get up, the pain soaring through her
back, “Do tell
me.” She was so annoyed. With herself and with him!
“Your hand in marriage, Miss Scully.”
Melissa let out an excited gasp, Dana’s mouth fell open in surprise. “WHAT?”
“I believe you heard me.”
She was angry. He had tricked her into fighting him! NOW he wanted her hand in
marriage! “NEVER!”
He bit his lower lip, “I have already spoken to your father, he gives his
consent. All you
need to do is say ‘yes’ to my proposal.”
Dana was still on the ground, and the pain was too intense for her to move, but
she tried
anyway. She let out a shriek and fell back. He fell to his knees, brushing her
hair away
from her face..... as he had done when he found her in the field. “I’m sorry, I
shouldn’t
have tricked you into a match. You’re still hurt.” He gently tried to lift her
up to her feet.
She held onto his shoulders, biting back the pain. Carefully, he carried her to
a stone
bench, sitting her down. Samantha had gone to get William Scully or Margaret
Scully.
Melissa stayed with her sister, “I think she’ll be fine, my Lord.”
Mulder didn’t leave her side until Margaret Scully ran into the court yard,
“DANA! What
happened to you?”
Dana turned to Lord Mulder, still angry with him, “Forgive me for saying so, my
Lord, but
you are a snake!”
Margaret was surprised that her daughter had said such a thing to an Earl.
“Forgive her, it
must be the pain.”
Mulder stood up, “I hope she is well soon.” He and Walter left the court yard in
search of
Samantha.

Mulder wasn’t allowed to leave the King’s sight until Dana had arrived. She was
pushed
into the room, her hair falling around her face in red curls..... she looked
scared. Standing
before the King, she bowed as she always did. The King nodded, “Sit, Miss
Scully.”
Taking a seat next to Mulder, she anxiously awaited for her fate. “I have been
told that
you overheard a conversation. I want to know everything.”
“Yes, my King. I was in the art gallery. When I heard someone coming, I hid
behind the
curtains near the windows. A man named Ronald was talking with Sir Heron.
Something
about Princess Catherine. She is with them, Sir. You’ll be killed after the
wedding and
Catherine will have the throne.” She sounded like a young child reciting a
school lesson
from history.
He starred at her, Heron entered the room. “ALL LIES! She’s mad!”
Jumping to his feet, Mulder came to her defense, “You are the one who’s mad!”
Guards entered and restrained Mulder. One of them stood behind Dana, preparing
to
snatch her if she moved. The King turned from Mulder to Dana. “I never believed
that you
would sink so low, Mulder. And driving Dana Scully mad! Your father will deal
with you
when he returns...... for now, both of you are to remain under lock.”
Dana’s heart skipped a beat. Under lock. The prison tower. Her father would kill
her. She
lifted her chin, gathering all her courage, “Under lock, you don’t feel that
this is
unnecessary? Your highness-”
“I can not play favorites just because your father is one of my friends. Take
them.”

The PRISON TOWER was a single tower. Mulder was pushed up the stairs
and
into a cell. Piles of straw and a crude bed where all that the cell contained.
He moaned,
“This is just grand.”
The guard snickered at him, “Enjoy. We’ll leave you Miss Scully to keep you
company.”
Dana was treated a bit better than he was. Her bed looked more comfortable.
Dana’s cell
was across from his, so he could see her clearly. Her cell was also much larger.
She
collapsed onto the bed. Burying her face in a pillow, he watched her sob.
Wanting to
reach out and hold her, he cursed himself. If he had just kept his moth shut!
“I’m sorry.
I’ve never been more sorry for anything in my life.” He said, hoping she would
listen.
She raised her face, now flushed and tear stained, “You’re sorry? Really? Well,
I bet you
aren’t half as sorry as I am! I’m sorry I ever went to you! I’m sorry I ever
entered the art
gallery! I’m sorry I didn’t die in the field when I fell off my horse!”
The last line stung him. Bringing him great pain. “Really? Do you wish you had
died
before we found you....?”
She collapsed to her knees, “I don’t know!”
Mulder wanted to reach out and take her into his embrace.... to shield her from
the rest of
the world. She was still a girl....... he had ruined everything. For her and for
himself. “I
wouldn’t worry so much. I’m in more trouble than you are. They think I tricked
you into
saying those things. They think I’m responsible. Your father will come and clear
everything up.”
She sighed, leaning against the wall, not caring if her skirts were ruined or
not! “That
doesn’t matter now. I’m here and I’m stuck. My reputation is ruined! I shall
never have a
suitor and my father will kill me before anyone can ask for my hand.”
“I ask for your hand.” He said softly.
“After all that has happened, what do you think I’ll say?” She asked him, her
temper
cooling.
“I know that you’ll reject me, but I pray that you’ll say yes.” He looked so
hurt, so
lonely....
Her breath was taken away, why was he doing this? After all she had said to him!
“Why
don’t you marry Lady Collenson’s daughter, Elisa? She’s a fine girl..... she’s
had her eye
out for you for a while now....”
“Elisa Collenson? I’d rather marry that monster, D.K. Smithson!”
“Monster? How can you call Smithson a monster, you don’t even know him!” She
defended her pen name.
“I don’t care! I wish him ill will!”
Jumping to her feet, she snapped at him, “You wish me ill will?”
“Not you, D.K. Smithson!”
“I AM D.K. SMITHSON!”
His mouth fell open in awe.... “You?”
“Yes ME! The D.K. stand for Dana Katherine! I changed my last name from Scully
to
Smithson! Oh, why am I even telling you?!”
He pulled himself up to his feet, “You’re Smithson?”
Not wanting to look at him, she only nodded.
“Dana Katherine.... D.K. Smithson..... I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN! You seemed to
know as much and you were always defending him! Or should I say defending
yourself?
How can I be so blind???”
She was so tired from screaming she laid herself down on the bed. Needing rest,
she
closed her eyes, “I’ll deal with you when I have the energy.” She sighed.
He started to laugh.
Getting annoyed, she raised her head, “And what do you find so funny?”
“When and IF we get out of here, will you marry me?” He grinned.
Her eyes went wide, “NO!”
He continued to laugh, “I knew you’d say that!”
“Why is that so funny?”
“I would have died from shock if you ever said yes!”
“I wish you would die from shock......” She muttered under her breath.

When Walter had gotten word that his friend had been sent to the
tower along
with Dana Scully, he leaped into action. He already knew that William Scully was
on his
way home, his wife was sure to have sent a message to him. In the meantime, he
needed to
find a way to get them out. He started with approaching the King himself. “Sir,
what have
they done?”
The King looked at him, as if he had asked the most obvious question, “They lied
to me,
first of all. And I’m beginning to think that Miss Scully is slightly mad.”
“Mad as in insane?” Walter tried to keep his temper.
“Of course.... have ‘t you seen her? Heron was telling me all about her
behavior.”
“Heron? Sir Heron?”
“Of course.”
Sir Heron. That explained a lot of things..... the monster. The King was a
puppet and
Heron was the puppet master, it was starting to make sense now. Heron had
convinced
the King to see things his way. Well, he’d have to find some other way to get
them out.
He could use William Scully’s help.

Heron stood and listened. Walter Skinner was starting to become a
pest. He’d
have to dispose of him later if he started to become and obstacle. Ronald
entered the
room. “Why is Miss Scully in the tower?”
“She overheard us in the art gallery.”
“She..... what are you going to do with her?”
“Dana Scully is the only one who cows the truth. And I don’t need William Scully
as an
enemy. I’ll have to kill her.”
“Kill her? How?”
“Simple stabbing. Then I’ll lay the blame on Mulder. I’ve heard that he’s asked
her for her
hand repeatedly and she has refused every time. He’ll seem to be mad.”
“Kill her and leave him with the blame? Sounds like fun. We should hurry,
William Scully
will be returning soon.”

Margaret stormed up the tower steps. Melissa wasn’t far behind. She had
been able
to convince the guard to let her see Dana. “MOTHER!” She cried from her cell.
Margaret rushed to the cell door, touching her daughter’s fingers through the
bars, “My
poor darling, what have they done to you?”
“I’m so sorry. I never intended to cause so much trouble.”
Melissa turned to see Lord Mulder in his own cell, he sat on the bed and watched
the
scene. “Lord Mulder, what are you doing here?”
“It’s my fault Dana landed herself in this tower, I’ll never forgive myself.”
Margaret turned around, “What did you two do?”
Dana turned to see if the guard was gone. “Mother, I heard something at the
engagement
party last night. Someone is going to kill the King. I told Lord Mulder and he
was forced
to reveal my name. They locked us up here.”
Margaret’s mouth fell open, “Oh, my goodness!”
Melissa turned back to Mulder, “How exciting! Dana, you could save the King!”
Dana rolled her eyes, “I CAN’T DO ANYTHING IF I’M IN HERE!” She wailed.
The guard returned, “Lady Scully, you must leave now.”
Margaret Scully held her daughter’s hand a little longer, “When your father
returns,
everything will be fine. Just you wait and see. Trust me, darling.”
With another reassuring glance, Margaret stood up and left the cell room. Mulder
turned
to her, “Lady Scully, I’m so sorry for what I’ve done. I had no intention of-”
“I know. Just try to keep her safe until William returns.”

Walter had gathered a few trusted friends. Frohike, Langley, Byers,
Samantha
Mulder and Adam Pendrell. The group had met in the library of the Mulder house.
“I’m
sure that you have learned what has happened to Mulder...... and Miss Scully.”
Walter
sounded morbid.
“I learned of the incident this afternoon. What has he done?” Langley asked.
“Nothing at all..... it’s just that Dana Scully learned a bit of news she
shouldn’t have and
confided in Mulder. He was forced to give her name and she was brought in for
questioning, then sent to the tower.”
“THE TOWER? They sent that poor innocent girl to the Tower?” Doctor Byers shook
his
head, “Is Mulder with her?”
“Yes, he’s with her. She should be safe until her father comes.” Langley put
down his tea
cup.
Walter shook his head, “I doubt that they’ll leave the only witness alive. She
overheard of
a plan to kill the King and to put Catherine in power.”
“Princess Catherine?” Frohike couldn’t believe his ears.
“She isn’t on our side of this war, that is for sure. I need to get Mulder and
Miss Scully
out of the tower soon. I can’t do it the legal way....Heron has his agents
everywhere and
they’ll stop me.”
“So we’ll help them escape!” Samantha practically jumped out of her chair.
Walter nodded, “That is my plan.”
Adam Pendrell, who had been sitting silently, finally spoke. “There are only six
of us! How
are we to get past the King’s guards and Heron’s agents?”
Walter stood up, “Simple. Catherine’s parents will be arriving soon, tomorrow,
actually.
Most of the guards will be placed around Catherine’s family and the King....
some other
royal guests will also attend. I guess that only five guards will be placed
around the
tower.”
Samantha stood up, “I think we should do it.”
Frohike, being faithful to Mulder, agreed.
Langley and Byers didn’t need convincing.
Pendrell was only thinking of the safety of Miss Scully, he could have cared
less about
Mulder. “All right.”

Days passed and the wedding party commenced. Dana was frazzled, she couldn’t
stand
the torture of the stress and anxiety. “The King will die and my reputation is
ruined and
God knows what they’ll do to you!”
Mulder looked up, “Are you concerned of what might happen to me?”
She looked up, “Lord Mulder, I am not a heartless shrew.”
He couldn’t help but smile, “No, defiantly not heartless.”
She threw up her arms in frustration, “I’m sick of your dry humor, can’t you be
serious?”
“Humor? It’s hard to have any humor while being locked up here, have you not
noticed?”
She moaned, “Ohhh, I’m sorry! I can’t stand small places like this, I want to go
home!”
He cursed himself for dragging an innocent girl’s reputation in the mud, and he
cursed
himself for dragging her into anything at all. He expected her to never speak to
him again
after her release. If she was released, after the King died, Heron would make
her vanish.
He couldn’t leave a witness to his crimes. Catherine wouldn’t have it.
FOX realized that someone was coming up the steps to the tower, “My Lord, who’s
coming?” Dana hissed.
“I don’t know.” He stood, preparing himself for defense.
But nothing would have prepared him to see Walter’s face. He was wearing the
uniform of
Catherine’s guards. “WALTER!”
“SHH! Miss Dana, are you all right?” Adam Pendrell rushed into the room,
hurrying to
her side.
She reached for his hands, “ADAM! It’s been horrible, what are you doing?
They’ll kill
you!”
“It doesn’t matter, there is no point in living in a corrupt world anyway. Your
father hasn’t
yet returned. We don’t know what happened, I fear that your mother’s letter has
been
intercepted.”
Dana took his hand as he helped her out of her cell, “Well, my father will just
deal with
them when he comes home.”
Mulder felt a slight stab in his soul, seeing Adam Pendrell with Dana Scully.
Adam was
just a boy...... and Dana seemed to have taken a liking to him. He sighed,
‘perhaps I
should just let him have a chance.’ He decided his thoughts could wait until he
got out of
the tower.

Catherine smiled at her new husband, the King. Heron was wondering
an arms
length away, and he seemed to be glowing with pride. They had exacted their plan
perfectly, a few more hours and Alex Krycheck would take over. Alex had his gun
and
was wondering near one of the roof tops. His plan was to shoot the King through
the
windows. Heron had assured him no one would get in the path of his bullet. His
heart was
pounding, it wouldn’t be long now. He was getting nervous, there were so many
people....
what if he missed?

Dana was led out of the tower. She saw the bodies of uncurious guards
on the
ground. “Oh, God.”
Adam wrapped an arm around her waist and helped her out the gate, “Don’t look.
They’ll
be fine in the morning.”
“Was that necessary?” Her voice sounded weak.
“Absolutely.” Walter unlocked the unguarded gate and escorted them to the
carriage.
Mulder froze, “The King! He’ll be killed! We have to go stop him!”
“As soon as they see us, they’ll kill us!” Dana stood next to Adam Pendrell.
Adam looked around, a worried expression crossing his face, “We have to get out
of here
now. Dana, get in the carriage.”
“No.” She said firmly.
Mulder almost grinned, he would have a Hell of a time with her.
“What do you mean? Get in, we’ll all be sent to the tower and no one will be
able to save
us!” He took her arm.
She yanked it away, “Adam, I said NO! We have to stop Catherine. Every thing
will be
over if she comes into direct power.”
Mulder sighed, “All right, come or be carried.”
She crossed her arms over her chest, “I have more important things to do.” She
started to
turn towards Langley and Frohike.
Mulder moved quickly, swooping her into his arms and setting her down in the
carriage
seat. “Are you mad!” She snapped.
He slammed the door shut, “Frohike, stay with her and don’t let her get out. The
rest of
you, come with me.”

The King finished his win. He was now drunk, and he knew it. How
grand!
Catherine took his glass, having a servant refill it. “Are you well?”
“Perhaps I’ve had a bit..... too much wine.” He grinned like a fool.
She laughed, “There is no such thing as ‘too much wine’!”
He finished another glass and Heron pulled him out to the open dance floor, one
of the
ladies not far behind. IT was her turn to dance with the King, and she didn’t
know it.... but
it would be the King’s final dance. Beth Rodell laughed as her King danced with
her.
Queen Catherine didn’t seem to be bothered, actually.... she was looking very
smug. Beth
dismissed the Queen and continued to dance.

Mulder had crept in, overlooked. A few had seen him but no one said
anything.
The young Lord and his friends searched the ball room, finding the King was now
dancing.
Everyone was off the dance floor, which was rather odd.... because the King
wasn’t
dancing with Catherine.

Heron hid the blade under his sleeve. He had gone into the tower
unnoticed. The
guards weren’t at their posts. He would have to find them later and have them
disciplined.
“Mulder..... Miss Scully?” He entered the tower chamber. Tonight was to be Dana
Scully’s last day on Earth, and it was going to be Mulder’s fault! He almost
smiled.....
almost. William Scully would be distraught when he returned from his trip. He
had no idea
his daughter was in the tower, because Margaret’s letter never left the city. He
made sure
of that himself. He opened the door to the room, expecting to see them in the
cells. His
heart stopped when he saw the doors of the cells wide open and the rooms empty.
“RONALD!” He screamed, wanting to kill the first person he saw. Mulder was gone,
and
so was Dana Scully. This game had gone on long enough!

Dana turned to Frohike, “I need air.”
He shook his head, “I know that trick, miss Scully. It’s for your own good to
stay here.”
She raised an eyebrow, “Well, if you say so.”
It seemed like hours went by and there was still no sign of Mulder and the
others. She
sighed, “Where are they?”
His attention turned when he heard a ruckus out by the tower. “They’ve learned
of your
escape. We won’t have much time.” Frohike turned around, peeking out the
windows.
While he got out of the carriage and into the driver’s box, Dana crept out and
through the
unguarded gate. She almost laughed. It was too easy, and there was no one on
guard that
night. This was just perfect! she slipped into the main ball room, her eyes
falling on
Mulder. The King danced in the center with one of the ladies, Catherine was far
off in a
corner, drinking wine. Dana found that odd..... why wasn’t the King dancing with
his new
bride? She made her way towards Mulder, no one was paying attention to her.

Alex Krycheck prepared himself. Heron had promised him that if he
was caught,
he’d be set free by Heron’s hands. Taking a breath, he took aim. The King and
his dance
partner had slowed down. ‘The pretty young lady might get her dress a little
bloody!’ He
thought. Slowly, they danced a bit longer. Then the danced stopped and they both
bowed
to each other and to the crowd. No one was in the way..... he fired. Right
before he pulled
the trigger, someone was pushed into the line of fire. “DAMN!” His thoughts
swirled. He
had missed. No time for that now, he had to get out! Abandoning his weapon, he
made his
escape.

Dana was avoiding contact with too many people, she didn’t want
anyone to see
her. A very drunk gentleman pushed her aside, “Sorry ‘er, Miss!” He laughed and
continued on his way, without giving her a second glance. Dana was pushed in
front of the
King and Beth, “oh!”
The King’s eyes went wide, “DA-”
A bang was heard. The sound of shattering glass. Dana was pushed to the ground,
she
could hear the screams of a young woman in the back of the room. She felt no
pain, not
any of a bullet wound, anyway. Looking up, she saw that Adam Pendrell had thrown
himself over her..... and he was now bleeding. “ADAM!” She screamed, struggling
to get
up.
Mulder pushed everyone out of his way to get to her, “DANA!” His heart was
beating
fast. She had been shot. She was hurt. She was going to die. She was already
dead.
He almost collapsed when he saw that she was unharmed. “Adam! Adam, wake up!”
A guard pulled her away, “Miss Scully, get back!” Walter shouted from across the
room.
Several people in the crowd gasped, realizing what had happened. Dana was
pulled away,
screaming the entire time. “He’d hurt! Let me go!”
The guard pulled her into one of the empty rooms, “He’s in good hands, Miss.”
Mulder followed behind, he wasn’t going to let her out of his sight. He signaled
for Walter
to do something. Dana had been pushed down into a chair. The King quickly
entered,
“You were right...... how can I ever repay you, Miss Scully?”
She wiped the tears from her eyes, “Adam’s been shot!”
“I know.... we have called in a doctor. I don’t know what else to do.”
Mulder made his presence known, “Find Heron and Catherine. You can’t let them
escape.”

As soon as Heron had learned that the game was up, he ran. He was
almost to the
gates when he heard a shout, “STOP HERON!”
It was Mulder and a group of guards. Dana Scully wasn’t far behind. Dana Scully
had
slipped into hysterics, “YOU SHOT ADAM!”
Mulder pulled her back, “Get out Dana!”
She refused, the foolish girl. “NO!”
She was only an arms length away, and before anyone knew what was happening,
Heron
grabbed her arm and pulled her to him. The knife in his sleeve slipped out and
he placed it
near her throat, “I know none of you would want to see her hurt. Perhaps I’ll
get to slit
her throat after all!”
Mulder stepped forward, “Don’t Heron! Anyone else-”
“No, I’ll take her with me. It’s going to be a hell of a journey. I might even
let her go.” He
dragged her to the fence. Walter came from a side, Langley and Byers from
another. He
was now sorounded, like a cornered rat. He knew it also. “MULDER! I am not
afraid to
kill her! I have nothing left to lose!”
“Murder? Are you willing to kill an innocent person?”
He only starred at him for a moment, “If I have to. Yes.”
He wasn’t making much progress, Mulder didn’t know what else to do. Dana was now
surprisingly calm. Her eyes were wide, she was scared out of her wits, but she
had her self
control. Walter moved in closer to Mulder, slipping him his gun. Taking it into
his hand
and hiding it behind his back, Mulder continued to ] Heron to let her go.
“Either way
you’ll get hanged.”
“I know I will. But at least this way, you and William Scully will be
distraught. And Adam
Pendrell would have died in vain because he was protecting her, not the King!”
Mulder became angry. How dare anyone do this? To Dana Scully! His movements were
a
blur. He revealed the gun and fired before anyone knew what had happened. Dana
fell
forward into Walter’s arms and Heron fell dead on the ground. The guards
surrounded
Heron and Mulder went to Dana. “Are you all right?”
She touched her throat, seeing the blood. “Oh, God!”
“Don’t worry, it’s not yours.” He lifted her up to her feet and helped her to
the King’s
side. Alex Krycheck had been caught trying to get over the gates. Catherine
wasn’t even
able to leave the ball room! She screamed and cursed everyone. And Dana Scully
swooned
for the first time in her life.

She woke seeing the face of her father tower above her. “Dana, are
you all right?”
He looked so distressed.
She sat up, “I’m...... where am I?”
Margaret and Melissa were sitting around her also, “Home.” Melissa said.
She sighed, “What happened?”
“You fainted in front of the King.” Walter commented from the door.
She noticed that Mulder wasn’t in the room. “Where.... what happened to Lord
Mulder?
Is he all right?”
“Fox Mulder had his sister to attend to. The poor girl went into hysterics last
night when
she heard of what had happened.” Walter answered.
“I need to go see him-” She started to get off the sofa.
She was pushed back down by her mother, “Dana! You have just endured an
experience
no young lady should have to! You will stay here.”
“MOTHER-”
“Don’t argue, Dana.” William Scully ordered.
Melissa grinned, “Relax for a bit. Can’t you leave adventures behind for a bit?”
Dana glared at her sister, “When can I-”
“As soon as both of you are well.” Margaret stood up, leaving the room. Everyone
followed behind her to let Dana rest. As soon as the door was been closed, Dana
slipped
out of the bed and changed into something perceptible. “I fainted in front of
the King!”
She cursed and scolded herself.

Samantha turned around to stare at her brother, “Is Dana Scully all
right?”
“She’s fine. She fainted, that’s all. Her father has just returned. He had no
idea, apparently
the letter never left the city.”
Samantha leaned against the wall, “And Adam Pendrell?”
“He’s dead.” Mulder starred at the ground. Adam had died protecting Dana
Scully.... he
couldn’t even sort his feelings out on that subject.
Samantha bit her lower lip, “Poor boy. His mother will be devastated. And what
of
Langley and Byers?”
“I sent them home after they had talked with the King. Walter went to see Dana
safe
home. I believe he has gone home now.”
Frohike entered, clearing his throat. “Miss Dana Scully to see you, Lord
Mulder.”
Mulder’s head shot up, “At this hour of the night?”
“I hope it isn’t an inconvenience to you, my Lord.” She said from the door.
Samantha smiled at her older brother, “Dana! Thank God you’re all right! Can I
get you
anything?”
She shook her head, “No, thank you, Samantha.”
Samantha nodded and left the room, pulling Frohike along with her and leaving
the door
wide open. “Sit down.” He said, motioning towards the sofa Samantha had just
vacated.
She sat, starring at her hands. “You’re probably wondering what brings me here.
I....
thank you.”
“For what?”
“For everything. For helping.”
“How did I help you?” He poured her a cup of tea.
“In the fields, when I fell. You helped me. And when Heron had me.... you helped
me. I
owe you much.”
He shook his head, “It’s what any man would have done.”
“That isn’t the point, my Lord. The point is that you did them. That YOU helped
me. I can
never thank you enough.”
“I don’t want you to mention it. You would have done the same.”
“But after I said all those horrible things to you, and treated you the way that
I did....”
“Well, Miss Scully, those incidents were all my fault. I pushed to them, after
my quite
forward proposal for marriage-”
“Yes.”
“Yes, what?”
“To your proposal.” She sat up straight.
His mouth fell open. ‘YES? She said YES!’ Fox William Mulder couldn’t remember
ever
being so happy or excited for so fulfilled! The tea he was pouring over flowed
and spilled
onto the carpet. “MY LORD!” She directed his attention to the tea.
“Are you sure? This isn’t just because I saved your life two or three times?”
She laughed, “No. It isn’t.”
“Prove it.” He had to make sure that this wasn’t pity, or her payment for his
help and
efforts. He didn’t want to force her into anything she didn’t want.
She stood up, standing right in front of him. She took his face into her hands
and kissed
him lightly.
He gasped, “What was that?”
“My proof. I will marry you if the offer is still on the table.”
“OF COURSE IT IS!”
Samantha entered the room, “CONGRADULATIONS! DANA! FOX!”
Mulder’s over enthusiastic little sister threw her arms around both of them,
“This is
amazing! I’ve never been so excited! We have to plan everything, leave it all to
me!”
Dana blushed, “I have to tell my parents.... I don’t know what they’ll say.”
Mulder kissed her hand, “I love you.”
“Is that what they’ll say?” Her voice cracked.
“That’s what I say.”
Before she could do anything, Samantha cut in between them, “We’ll have the
grandest
wedding! It’ll be wonderful! I swear-”
Mulder pushed Samantha out of the way, “Did you hear me?”
She nodded, “Yes, my Lord.”
“Call me Fox.” His voice was lowered. Samantha had fallen silent and they were
oblivious
to her.
She let him kiss her again, “Thank you.” She whispered.
“For what?”
“For loving me.”
“I’ll never be the same.” He smiled at her.
