No copyright infrigement intended. When Dana Scully walked inside Fox Mulder's office, she had no idea what to expect. Mulder had called her last night and told her to get to work early because he had something important to show her, and usually with Mulder, that meant they were about to embark on another case. When she finally walked in, Mulder was on the phone talking to one of his anonymous friends that he never told her about. Scully decided to let him continue talking, so she just stood at the door waiting. It seemed that he was talking about some trip that he needed to make to Florida. When Mulder turned around and seen Scully there he almost dropped the phone. He excused himself to the person and hung up. "What was that about, Mulder?," Scully asked. She really wanted to know where he thought he was going and if he was going to ditch her again. Mulder just turned around got his coat and took a long look at Scully and told her that he would see her later. As he walked out of the office, she could have sworn she heard him mumbling something about her always being so nosy. As Scully shut the door she wondered what was getting into her partner. He never treated her like this before, or was it that she never noticed that he did treat her like that until now. Scully didn't like the ideas that were going through her mind. Mulder was her best friend, and the more she thought about it, the more she realized how sad that was. She looked up at the clock and realized she was already feeling hungry, so she headed out for some breakfast. Scully forgot that Mulder said that he needed to talk to her, so when Mulder got back he found an empty office. He silently cursed under his breath. Just as he was about to leave again, Scully came in with a bagel and cream cheese. "Good Morning, Mulder. What did you have to talk to me about?," Scully asked. Mulder shook his head. She was ignoring what happened this morning. He suspected that he had hurt her *again*, but as always she never showed her emotions to him. Maybe she was afraid she would hurt *him*. He didn't know. "Scully, there was a change of plans. There is nothing important to tell you anymore. Well, actually there is...I'm sorry that I treated you like that this morning," Mulder silently prayed that she would open up and talk to him about these things. Scully looked up at him with her bright blue eyes without even flinching she lied to him. "It's okay, Mulder. It didn't hurt me, if that's what you are thinking. I know you always have a lot on your mind." Mulder thought about this for a moment then said, "Yes, but I should not have done that to you. Granted I have a lot of things on my mind, but it's still no excuse." "Mulder, let's just drop it. I'm not mad at you and isn't that all that you care for in the end?!" Scully stopped as soon as she realized what she said. She made it sound like he only worried about himself. It maybe true, she thought to herself, but he doesn't realize that. Maybe he never will. While Scully was thinking, Mulder watched her battle with whatever she was thinking. He knew she thought she said something wrong, but the truth was that what she said *was* the truth. But with Mulder being Mulder, he said something he shouldn't have. "I knew you would think that. You only care about yourself. Well, I'm sick of it. You try to make me look like the bad guy saying I only care that you're not mad at me so that you won't leave the X-Files. Is that it?!" Scully flinched. Mulder never got an attitude with her and it frightened her. "Mulder," she said, "let's not fight. I didn't say that. I know you care for me." Mulder looked at her, and he knew right then that he wanted to hurt her as much as her comment before hurt him. So, he said it. "You know what, Scully, everybody was right. You are the Icequeen." Instantly, tears came to Scully's eyes. She looked at him and said the only thing she could, "Mulder, I'm sorry you feel that way. But if you knew the real me, then you wouldn't think that. I guess this is it. It's over. I don't want to be partners with you anymore. I don't want to talk to you, I don't even want to know you....Spooky." By this time, Scully had tears streaming down her face. Mulder was even crying. He realized he just ruined the best thing in his life. She was about to walk out his life forever. "Scully, please don't go. I didn't mean it and I know you didn't mean what you just said." Scully turned around, her eyes red and puffy from crying. She dried her eyes, held her head up high. "If you didn't mean it, you wouldn't have said it. If you want to see an Icequeen, I'll be more than happy to oblige. Oh, and by the way, I did mean what I said, I'm not happy with what I said, but I do mean it. You hurt me. I don't want to hurt anymore." When Scully headed out the door she turned around and said one last thing. "Mulder." Mulder looked up at her, with tears running down this face. "Yeah," he said. "Mulder, I don't know if this means anything now, but I love you. I always have, I always will, but I guess this is goodbye. Goodbye, Mulder." Then Scully walked out of the office and Mulder dropped to the floor. When Mulder finally realized that he had been on the floor for minutes, hours...who could tell? He got up and decided he had to go after her. He lost Samantha and he'd be damned if he was going to lose Scully, too. Samantha was possibly not his fault, but if he lost Scully, he had no one to blame but himself. When Mulder finally arrived at Scully's apartment, he opened the door with the spare key that she had given him. He knew she wouldn't willingly let him in her home. He half expected to see Scully on the couch typing her resignation on her labtop, but he was surprized to find that the house was deserted. At least from the look of it, anyway. Mulder searched the apartment, looking for a sign of his partner everywhere. Finally, he came to her bedroom. Mulder knocked very silently, opened the door the tiniest bit, and looked inside. The lights in the room were still on, but he couldn't believe what he was seeing. There was his partner asleep with tears streaming down her face, clutching a picture frame to her chest. Mulder slowly walked up to Scully and looked at the picture she was holding and he had to smile. "Maybe there is hope for us after all," Mulder thought to himself. In her arms, Scully was holding a picture of Mulder. It was a picture that his mother had made him take a few months back. He wondered how Scully had received one of them. He didn't tell her about the pictures being taken. He'd have to ask her about that, if she ever forgave him for this morning first. Mulder sat on the edge of her bed, and kissed Scully's forehead very tenderly in attempt to wake her. He was afraid she would wake up, but also afraid that she wouldn't. But she did, indeed, wake up. Scully looked up into Mulder's beautiful hazel eyes and her first instinct was to smile at him, but then she remembered what had happened and her smile quickly disappeared to nothing but a glare. Mulder swallowed and then gathered his thoughts to bare his soul to this woman. "Scully, I know that I hurt you this morning. I didn't mean what I said, regardless of whether I said it or not. There is no excuse, but I need you to know that you are the most important person in my life and I couldn't bare the thought of you leaving me. Like I said before in my hallway, you kept me honest and made me whole. I need you, Scully. And, as for what you said this morning, what you said does matter and it does make a difference. It matters because I love you, too. I'm tired of playing these games. I'm tired of pretending that you're not all I need in my life. Of course, I will always look for Samantha, but I want you there beside me the entire time. I want you to be there, so that we can find her together. Along with the truths of what happened to you, Melissa, and Emily. I want to share my life with you, and I want you to share yours with me. I love you, and I think that there is only one thing left to say, Scully, and that is that I'm a selfish bastard and I know it. The truth of the matter is that I don't want you to ever leave me, so I guess I'm going to have to make a commitment to you here to let you know that I'm serious about loving you and not wanting you to leave me. Dana Katherine Scully, will you marry me?" Scully looked once again into Mulder's eyes and she knew he was telling the truth. Scully knew what she had to say, "Mulder, you once said that the truth would save us both. I believe you were right. The truth stopped us from making the biggest mistake in our lives. I don't want to lose you either. I love you and yes, I will marry you." Mulder finally did what he started in that hallway. He kissed her so softly on the lips until they both ran out of breath. Finally when they came up for breath, Mulder looked down at Scully, smiled, and then he took off his shoes and joined her in bed. *THE END* So, did you like it?! Let me know what you think, please. This was my first attempt at fanfic, so please be kind. I am making another fanfic link that will lead to other links of stories that I made. Well, that's what I'm planning to do anyway.
