November 2009
Graveyard on the outskirts of New York

In a perfect world,
No parent would ever bury their own child.
But this isn't a perfect world.
It is harsh and it is cruel
And it is unfair.

The tombstone in front of me tells me that.

In a perfect world,
No child would suffer.
They would never experience pain or death.
But the truth is they do
Every day.

The tombstone in front of me tells me that.

In a perfect world,
A child's innocence would be preserved.
There would be no need
For warnings about strangers
Or dangers from the outside world.
But this isn't a perfect world.

The inscription on the tombstone in front of me tells
me that.

8 years old.

So young.

In a perfect world,
My son would be learning to multiply.
He would be riding his bike down our street,
Or begging me to get him a new one.

In a perfect world,
My son would be playing Little League,
Losing his first tooth,
Or writing his list to Santa Clause.

But this isn't a perfect world.

Why not?

Because our son was robbed from us
Three months before we found him again.

All we have is a grave.

No memories of summer holidays
Or trips to see his grandmother.

No photographs of toothless grins
Or of his first school play.

No old clothes that he has grown out of
Or pets he begged us to get him.

All we have is the tombstone in front of us.

And the police reports.

They said that the fire spread quickly,
Engulfing everything.

Apparently, it started in the kitchen
They hadn't got a chance.

Neither did we.

In an ideal world,
No parent should have to bury their own child.

We didn't even get that.
