"See you..next time..partner.." Scully choked as she said the words.
Blood trickled from between her lips and slid down her chin. Mulder
shifted her weight onto his knee and freed a hand to wipe away the red
smear. The ground beneath them was wet and muddy. The tall grass
shielded them from the view of the other members of the SWAT team that
Mulder had gestured away. He knew that his pain was written on his face
for all to see. Scully smiled at him the best she could.
"The ambulance is on it's way. Just hold on Dana." He told her softly,
but he knew it would arrive too late to save her. She would die here -
in this field - in his arms. The irony was not lost on him.
"I believe." She whispered. "Next time.." She tailed off, tears
flowing down her face as she wrestled with their last words in this
lifetime. Her eyes widened slightly as Mulder drew away from her a
little and pulled a knife from his vest. "No.." He cut a slash across
his palm and smiled at her reassuringly. He wasn't about to kill
himself. At least not today. He placed the hand over the gunshot wound
that was pumping her blood into the fertile soil of the field. Death
and rebirth. Their blood mingled and their flesh met. He felt as if he
were absorbing her pain into himself. She was here because of him.
Just like so many times before. He couldn't stop it.

"You let me think.." Scully whispered brokenly. "..you let me think
that..you meant her.."

Mulder didn't need to question who she was referring it. Their soul
mate. Tied to them as surely as Samantha and Cancerman. Mulder felt
his throat contract painfully. He couldn't have lied to her but he
hadn't told the truth.
"Souls mate eternally." He whispered in return. He wiped the tears
from her eyes, ignoring the tears in his own. "Once we were lovers, but
too long ago.."
"Greece.." Scully sighed. "..in the shade of an olive tree. I was a
priestess and you were my forbidden love. My philosopher. I was belief
and you were reason. What a turnaround.."
"How'd you remember?" Mulder asked in surprise.
"My dreams.." She whispered, her voice taking on an odd note of
strength. Her mouth quirked into a mimicry of a smile. "And my
regression tapes.." She managed a teasing tone. Mulder smiled,
surprised by the revelation. "..I was jealous. I couldn't stand not
knowing. I thought I'd made it up to make me feel better.."
"You rationalized." Mulder acknowledged, his weak smile still
lingering.
"..It was real Mulder." She tried to sit up, but Mulder wouldn't let
her and lowered her back to her place resting on him. "..I can see
everything in my mind. There's so much we've lived. So much misery.."
"But so much happiness.." Mulder insisted. "You and me and Melissa and
Samantha. Linked souls."
"Yes." Scully sighed and closed her eyes. Her body shuddered.
"Dana?" Mulder said softly. The eyes fluttered open again. Mulder
almost thought that he could see past the blue and into the infinity of
her soul. Her mouth tugged into a trace of a smile.
"Let me die.." Her voice was less than a whisper but it boomed inside
his mind. "..with your lips on mine." He could never have refused.

His eyes closed. His mind wanted to ignore the trappings of this life
and all the other lifetimes. Souls wanting to touch without the
singularities of existence. Beyond the flesh. Above the conscious
mind. More than reality. Floating within a moving stream of all
humanity. Alone together. Never alone. Never together. Never apart.
All things at once. Smoke drifting on the currents of time.
"I love you." The voice which had been hers whispered.
"I love you." The voice which was his replied. The words were only
words. They had already known. They had always loved. Love beyond
flesh. Beyond gender. Friendship and love. Love and friendship. Just
words. Not real. Souls touching. Her dying breath fanned onto his
lips. For a second she was still there. Enveloping him with light and
colour and warmth. And then the moment was gone.

Mulder could feel her weight in his arms. He could hear the whir of the
ambulance sirens. The crunch of the grass as the paramedics ran towards
him. He could see them with his eyes. He could feel the cold of the
Virginia winter eating into his bones. But in his heart he was in the
shade of an olive tree and she walked towards him, smiling.

<sob> Okay, that makes my total times for killing Scully five, whilst
Mulder's total is running at three. I have questioned this need I
appear to have to kill Scully and I think that it's actually a desire to
see Mulder suffer.

"It's not yet the finely detailed insanity you've come to expect from
me, it's just a theory."
