Disclaimer: Alrighty! This is the highly requested sequel
to, "Peace, be Still". I must admit that I never planned to
write one, but I guess I need one. So before I get into
that....the characters Fox Mulder, Dana Scully, Walter
Skinner, the Cancer Man, Deep Throat and Melissa Scully are
the property of Chris Carter and 10-13 productions. I have
not intentio n of copyrighting or infringing this story. I
really doubt anyone would be interested in publishing this
anyway.

Note: I can't really say anything about this story with out
giving away t he plot but I'd like to say that my grammar,
spelling, and punctuation is not the greatest, so go easy on
me. This story will make absolutely no sense if you don't
read "Peace, be Still" before it. As you probably rem ember
from the last story it began with Scully in the cemetery and
then went through all that stuff about what led up to
Mulder's *death*. Then it ended with the Cancer Man talking
to another man about Scully getting the X-Files back. This
story picks up about two months after the other one leaves
off. Also I would like to mention that you won't have to
read my stupid quotes at the beginning of the sections, I'm
to lazy to think of new ones.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

May 10, 2000
7:02 P.M.
Dulles Airport

Dana Scully sat quietly on the plane leaving for Boston. It
had been nea rly a year since she last saw her x-partner
Thomas Crawford and she regre tted the length. They had
started off hating each other. She had been p aired up with
his brother, who was killed in a cross fire, and after that
Tom had been her partner. Soon they had become good
friends, but now he was gone.

Dana had been sitting alone in her basement office when the
phone rang. "Scully." she had said a bit annoyed. It was
late and she had wanted to go home and forget about the
terrible day she had had.

"Agent Scully...this is Jane Crawford." the woman had said.
"I'm Tom Crawford's sister. Carrie, his wife asked me to
call you to tell you that Tom has been killed."

She hadn't known what to say. It had all been a shock to
her, one day she had been talking to him on the phone and a
couple of days later he was dead. "When's the funeral?" she
had asked Jane.

"The twelfth." Jane had answered. "It would mean a lot to
Carrie if you could make it. She said that Tom's last words
were of you."

"I'll be there." Dana had promised and that was exactly
where she was headed.

Skinner had told her that Tom was investigating a series of
disappearanceswhen someone decided that he was getting to
close and finished him off.

No one knew exactly what happened and the other agents were
afraid to l ook any further for fear that they too would end
up in the same position Tom had ended up in.

"Excuse me." Dana said, stopping a young light attendant.
"Could you tell me how much longer this flight will be
delayed?"

The attendant looked at her watch. "I'm afraid that it'll
be another hour or so. There's a terrible storm in Boston
and no planes are allowed in or out." she smiled. "I'm
sorry I wish there was something that I could do."

Dana nodded, "It's all right. No big deal...." she gave the
attendant a reassuring smile then settled down in her seat.
<This is going to be a lo ng night.> she thought. <A very
long night.>

Just as Dana was about to fall asleep she felt someone brush
past her, dr opping something on her lap. Opening her eyes
she picked up a small enve lope and looked down the isle.
There was no one on either side of the plane.

With shaking hands Dana gently opened the envelope and
pulled out a small picture. The picture was of her,
kneeling in front of Mulder's grave with a hand full of
pedals. On the back was a note.

<March 14, 2000. You will find the truth in this picture.>
it read. Turning it back over she examined it more closely.
There was nothing odd about it, it had been taken the day
she got the X-Files back and other than that it meant
nothing to her. Turning it over once again she read the
hand scribbled note. The hand writing was familiar, but
she couldn't think of where she had seen it before.

Dana stood up and glanced around the plane looking for a
familiar face, looking for any face that would give a clue
to as who took the picture.

"Miss." a flight attendant said walking over to her.
"You'll have to sit down now, were almost ready to take
off.."

Dana nodded and sat down. <Whoever gave me this picture...>
she thought, glancing down at it one last time. <Has a
funny way of delivering the truth.>

Logan international Airport
Boston

"Dana." Jane cried rushing towards her. "I'm so glad that
you could make it."

Dana smiled. "He was my best friend." Dana whispered. "I'm
so sorry Jane.....he didn't deserve to die." she felt tears
rising in her throat. "I' m really sorry."

Jane smiled sadly. "You were his best friend too." she led
Dana to her car. "He asked me to give you this." she pulled
a small package from her purse. "A couple of days before
he died, he said that he had found somet hing that you'd
been looking for and asked me to give this to you if anyt
hing happened to him."

Dana excepted it and put it into her over night bag.
"Thanks....I'll look at it later." she sat down next to Jane
in the front seat. "I know what it's like to lose someone
you love."

Jane turned to her and nodded. "Yes, I remember Agent
Mulder's death. I always knew that Tom would have the same
fate as your Mulder." she pulled out of the airport and onto
the interstate.

"Do you know what happened?" Dana asked. "I've asked
people, but no one will tell me anything."

"He was investigating these little girls disappearances and
he got in over his head. The kidnapper shot him and two of
the kids." she shook her head. "It was terrible, Dana.
Just seeing Tom lying there in bed, so still..." he words
trailed off.

"I know. They wouldn't let me see Mulder. The doctor
pushed me away." Dana sighed. "I don't want to talk about
it. I've been trying to forget it."

"I understand." Jane whispered and turned onto her street.

Dana sat in silence trying to imagine this woman's pain.
She knew what it was like to lose someone you love, but she
hadn't felt the pain for nearly three years. She had pushed
it aside, denying it. There was nothing she wanted more
than to be able to kiss Mulder one last time, to feel his
breath against her neck.

"We're here!" Jane cried.

Dana glanced up and quickly climbed out to the car, "Your
house hasn't changed one bit." she said.

May 12, 2000
St. Johns Cemetery

The bag pipes played 'Amazing Grace' softly in the back
ground as they lowered Tom Crawford's body into the ground.
The day of funeral had been warm and sunny, much too
cheerful for such a sad day. Hundreds of people had showed
up wanting to pay their last respects to Tom and his family.

Dana sat cross legged next to Jane in front of the coffin.
She had her a ttention focused on the sky, on the clouds,
anywhere but the coffin. Bad memories poured into her mind
as the wall she was building broke. It didn't seem fair,
nothing seemed fair anymore.

Off in the distance a young man stood watching the burial.
He wore a dar k suit and sun glasses. His face remained
emotionless, but his eyes remained focused on the one
familiar face in the crowd. He could help but notice how
tired and weak she looked. Pushing aside his thoughts he
turned and headed back towards the parking lot.

Jane stood up and looked over and Dana, "Are you coming?"
she asked softly.

Dana looked up and nodded, "Yeah, I'll be right there." she
said. "I just want to stay her a moment."

Jane nodded and headed back to where the black limo's
waited.

Dana stood up and laid a single rose in Tom's grave.
"Thanks." she whispered and followed Jane.

May 13, 2000
Dana's Apartment

Dana stared down at the small package in her hand. She
hadn't opened it yet and wasn't sure she wanted to. <Okay
Dana.> she thought to herself. <Your going to take of the
wrapping and see what Tom found.>

Her fingers fumbled numbly with the wrapping as she pulled
out the packag es contents. There was a small computer disk
and stack of pictures. The pictures were of Mulder and the
Cancer Man. One picture had Mulder handing the Cancer an
envelope, another was of the Cancer Man and Mulder shaking
hands, there were a couple others of Mulder putting on a
pair of dark sun glasses and the last one was of Mulder
ducking behind a bush.

Dana was suddenly very hurt....<Was Mulder working with that
man when he died?> she asked herself. Shaking off the
feeling of betrayal she threw the picture face down on her
night stand and slipped the disk into her computer.

The first thing that came to the screen was a attached
letter from Tom. "Dear Dana." she read aloud. "If your
reading this, then that means that they got to me. For
sometime now I have been investigating a tip that I got from
a reliable source on the whereabouts of Samantha Mulder. I
remember something you once said to me about finding the
truth and I believe that I found both yours and Mulder's in
one stride." Dana paused to wipe a tear from her eye. "I
must admit that when I began to investigate I had no idea
what I was getting myself into and the contents of this disk
b are some shocking revelations. I suggest that you do not
look at this di sk if your afraid of the truth......because
the truth will hurt."

Dana closed her eyes and flipped off the computer. She
didn't want to know the truth....not yet anyway. With one
last look at the pictures she had thrown onto her night
stand she turned off the light and climbed under the
covers.

The pictures rested face down with date facing up.

May 14, 2000
J. Edgar Hoover Building
Washington DC
6:30 P.M.

Dana sat staring at the picture someone had dropped on her
lap. She didn't understand what it meant by, <You will find
the truth in this picture > There was nothing in the
picture, nothing but her, Mulder's grave, a man standing of
in the distance and dark clouds.

Laying the picture down on the desk and leaned back. Her
office was dark ,but she found herself enjoying the
darkness. "I'm getting to old for this." she mumbled.
Just as she was about to stand up, there was a knock
at the door. "Come in." she yelled.

The door opened slowly, but no one entered. "Hello?" she
called. She he ard a click and then footsteps. "Who's
there." she reached for the light switch but some one
grabbed her arm. "Agent Scully." a deep voice said. "I have
some information on the Crawford murder that you may be
interested in."

Dana sat very still waiting for the man to continue. When
he did not she said. "What kind of information?"

The man laughed. "Everything has a price agent Scully.
First You must g ive me what I want."

Dana looked around, "What do you want. I don't have
anything."

"I want the pictures that Crawford gave you and the disk."

Dana shook her head. <Maybe I should he looked at that
disk.> she thought. "I don't have the pictures." she lied.
"But here." she pulled a blank disk from her drawer. Here's
your damn disk."

The man laughed again. "This better be the right disk or
you may end up joining Crawford." he took the disk from her.
"Now I suggest that you forget about finding Crawford's
killers. It may anger you."

"Excuse me?" Dana cried. "I thought you had some
information about Tom's murder, but that sounds more like a
threat." she smiled. "Is it a threat or are you concerned
about my well being?"

"You do what you like, but It's you life and your death." he
quickly turned and left.

Dana listened as the footstep disappeared down the hall then
she pulled t he real disk out of her pocket and quickly made
a copy of it. She had to find a safe place for the copy.
If anything were to happen to her she h ad to have something
for someone to continue her work. ******************
6:45 P.M.
Oakwood Cemetery

Dana jumped out of her car and ran to Mulder's grave. She
knew that the disk would be safe buried with Mulder.
Kneeling down she quickly pulled the disk and the copies of
the photographs out of her pocket and shoved t hem into a
small plastic bag and then she placed them an a little wood
box.

"Mulder, I know that there was something that you never told
me...." she frowned. "Your connection with the Cancer Man
was kind of a shock. I never thought I'd see you shaking
hands with him. What ever you got your self dragged into, I
don't really want to know......but Crawford's dead an d this
is the truth he found for us." she began to dig a hole sat
that it would eventually be under the head stone. "Actually
it's the truth that he found for me, but we were always
searching for the same truth so it's for both of us."

Dana stood up and brushed the dirt from her hands onto her
pants. Just l ooking down at the grave brought tears to her
eyes. "Well Mulder, I guess this is it." she sighed.
"Maybe next time you'll trust me a little bit more."

With out another word Dana quietly headed back to her car.
She was about half way there when she noticed someone
approaching her. "Not now." she mumbled. "I'm not really
seeing him." she closed her eyes, willing he figure to go
away.

"Agent Scully, it's been along time." the man said.

Dana opened her eyes, "Your dead!" she whispered. "Damn I
saw you get killed. Why do you keep doing this to me?"

Deep Throat laughed. "My dear Dana, your not
hallucinating......so give yourself a break."

"What do you want?" she asked. "I don't have all night and
I would like to actually sleep more than an hour tonight."

"Can I ask you something?" he asked.

Dana nodded. "Sure......"

"What have you been searching for? You can't possibly be
searching for t he same truth your partner was searching
for."

"I...I...." Dana sighed. "I don't know what I'm searching
for." she shoo k her head sadly. "I guess that if I knew, I
wouldn't be searching anymore. I don't know what it was or
what it is, but ever since Mulder's death something has been
driving me crazy."

Deep Throat nodded sympathetically, "That picture that was
delivered to you holds the truth that you are looking for.
And when you figure out what you are looking for, that's
when you'll see it in the picture." his voice dropped as he
said this.

Dana nodded, "I'm not sure I want to find out what I'm
searching for..... I..." she shook her head. "I have to
go." she said and quickly ran for h er car.

She had just reached her car when she heard her cellular
ringing from the front seat. "Hello!" she cried flipping up
the mouth part. "Scully."

"Agent Scully." Skinner said...."Your expertise is needed in
Darren, Rhode Island. Pick up some of your things and meet
me at my office."

Dana quickly started the car and headed towards her
apartment. "Yes sir. 2E." she mumbled. "What is this
investigation?"

She heard Skinner shuffling through some papers. "I'll tell
you when you get here." he said. "Now whereever the hell
you are....get a move on it and get over here." His words
were harsh but she heard a hint of humor in his
words.

"Yes sir." she said then hit end on the phone. With a wave
of frustratio n she threw the cellular into the back seat
and pushed down harder on the accelerator. <I'm not going
to let this bother me.> she thought. <I'm not going to even
think about Mulder or Deep Throat or Mr. X.> she pushed her
thoughts aside and pulled into her apartment parking lot.

Not more than thirty minutes later Dana was seated across
from Skinner in his office. "So what is this file that you
wanted to talk to me about?" she asked. "Couldn't this have
waited until tomorrow....it's really late..."

Skinner cut her off, "Agent Scully, Am I under the
impression that you want me reassign this?" he asked.
"Because if I have too, your going to lose the X-Files."

Dana shook her head, "No, I want too..." she smiled. "Now
what does this X-File involve?"

Skinner handed her a thick folder. "This isn't an X-file."
he said caref ully. "This is the investigation surrounding
the murder of Agent Thomas Crawford. We were just recently
informed that his murder was involved wi th some sort of
cover up. I want you to go to Rhode Island and find out
what it was." he paused. "This is very dangerous....do you
feel that your ready to handle such a high risk case?"

"Me sir?" Dana asked. "I mean I want to find Toms murderer
more than any thing, but I don't understand why your asking
me."

Skinner sighed, "I feel that your the only one capable of
handling this sort of investigation."
Dana laughed, "Or is it because I'm expendable?" she asked.
"Is it because I don't have children or a husband or a
family who cares about me?"

Skinner shook his head, "No." he gently laid a hand on her
shoulder. "You'll under stand when you meet up with Agent
Riece. His is with our bureau, here in DC, but has been on
special assignment for the past couple of years....." he
handed her a plane ticket. "When you get there you'll be
contacted."

Dana nodded, "What is agent Riece's involvement with this
case......I'm a fraid I've never heard of him."

"He will be your partner from here on." Skinner replied. "I
realize that we agreed that you would not have a partner,
but I feel that you need one."

"All right." Dana agreed. "Working alone was starting to
bother me anyway."

"You better be going." Skinner informed her. "You don't
want to miss your flight. All of your instructions are in
that folder."

"Thank you sir." Dana said, shook his hand then left.

*******************
9:30 P.M.

Skinner walked towards the car parked in front of the
Washington monument 2E He could see the faint light of a
lighter through the dim wind shield.

"Is she on her way?" the cancer man asked rolling down the
window.

Skinner nodded, "Yes she's on the next flight." he opened
the door and sl id in next to a young man. "I hope we're
doing the right thing."

"We are. the young man whispered....." She must know.....she
has to see t he truth and not just believe that it's out
there."

9:30 P.M.
Plane to Rhode Island
D
Dana fingered the pictures in her hands, she couldn't stop
looking at them. It hurt to see that the man she had loved,
the man she still loved, could have possibly been working
for the wrong side. She flipped one of t he pictures over
had sighed.

"Would you like something to drink?" a flight attendant
asked stopping ne xt to her.

Dana looked up and nodded, "Yeah....I'd like a diet coke."
She was moving the pictures aside to make room for the drink
when the attendant accide ntally dropped the cup, spilling
coke all over the pictures.

"Oh, my!" the attendant cried. "I'm so sorry." she began to
dab at the s pilled drink.

Dana held up her hand, "It's all right." she mumbled..
"I'll take care of it." She began to wipe the coke away
from the backs of the pictures. Her hand was about to move
to the next picture when she noticed the date on the back.

"What!?" she cried. Dana picked up the picture to examine
it more carefully. "2-18-2000." she read. All of the
pictures contained the same date.

Shaking her head, she pulled out the other picture, the
picture of her kneeling before Mulder's grave. She knew the
day it was taken, but what th e picture held she did not
know.

"Miss!" Dana said holding her hand up so that the flight
attendant could see her.

"Yes?" she asked approaching.

Dana glanced at her watch. "Do you have a phone on this
plane?" she asked.

The attendant nodded and pointed to the back wall.

Dana quickly thanked the woman and made her way back to the
phone. She p ulled out her calling card and punched in the
numbers. It rang several times before someone finally
answered.

"Frohike!" the man on the other line said.

Dana groaned, but forced herself to speak. "Hi, this is
Dana Scully." she said. "I know that it's been a while but
I need a favor." she could here either Byers or Langly
asking who it was in the back ground.

"It's Scully." she heard Frohike reply. Then turning his
attention back to her he said, "Sure.....What can I do for
you?"

"Listen.......I have some pictures and a disk that I want
you and the guys to look at." she said pulling out an
airmail envelope she had picked up earlier, out from her
purse. "I'd explain more, but I'm on a plane to Rhode
Island....." her voice trailed off as she stuffed all of the
picture s, with the exception of two into the envelope along
with the disk. "I have this feeling that I'm about to run
into something really big here and I want you guys to tell
me what it is."

"All right." Frohike agreed. "Is there anything we should
know about this disk?"

"Well, let's just say that what your about to get is some
kind of government cover up that my late partner, Agent
Crawford, stumbled across." she paused. "I haven't looked
at the disk and I'm not really sure that I wan t to, but if
you think it's something I should know about...You know
where to reach me."

"Okay." he paused. She could here him shuffling around some
papers. "Is it true that your back to work at the X-
Files?"

Dana laughed, "Yeah, but I may not be for long."

"Why?"

Dana sighed, "Well, it seems that the man I trusted, loved,
and believed in fell to the wrong side of the
law......You'll see what I mean when you get the pictures."

"Well don't do anything to risky." Frohike said. "I don't
want to have another friend dying on me."

"I promise that I'll be careful." She assured him. "I'll
call you in a c ouple of days." With that she hung up not
bothering to wait for his reply...

11:30 P.M.
Layton Airport
Rhode Island

Dana threw her suitcase into the back seat of her rental car
and climbed into the drivers seat. She was to stay at the
Brookland Inn and wait for word on where to meet Agent
Riece.

As she drove her thoughts kept drifting to Mulder. Had the
man she love, the man she still loved, crossed the line?
the thought of Mulder working with the Cancer Man made her
sick. Sure, she was taking some of the Ca ncer Mans hints
and leads, but she wasn't working for him. The pictures of
Mulder and the Cancer Man only pointed to Mulder's deep
involvement with something crooked and she was not even
close to crossing the line he had.

Turning into the hotel parking lot she checked out the
building. It was a lot nicer that the hotels she and
Mulder had stayed in, in the past. There were white columns
rising up the three story brick building and a hu ge marble
entrance way was illuminated by the huge chandelier hanging
above it.

Dana climbed out of the car and made her way to the office.
She opened t he huge oak doors and walked in.

An aging woman was sitting behind the desk reading a
magazine. She looked up as Dana approached. "May I help
you?" she asked.

Dana nodded, "I have a reservation for Scully?" she said.
"Dana Scully."

THE woman nodded and pulled out a card. "Sign here." she
pointed to a do tted line, then pulled a small piece of
paper out from a cubbie behind her. "This was left for you
earlier."

Dana excepted it, picked up her room key and headed towards
her room. It was on the first floor, right down the hall
from the front desk.

Once Dana reached her room, she opened the piece of paper
and read, "Agent Scully, Meet me at the old Livingston
factory off of Route 65 at 7:30 P.M. tomorrow night. Make
sure that you are not followed and come alone ... Agent
Riece."

*************
8:30 A.M.

Once again Dana's attention was drawn to the photograph of
her kneeling in front of Mulder's grave. She had lied awake
in bed all night staring at her image, trying to decipher
what the message on the back meant.

<What is in the picture?" she had asked herself over and
over again. Each and every time she came up with the same
answer......nothing.

Dana let out a cry of frustration. "Damn." she muttered.
"Damn..., damn ....., damn,.....damn......, damn!"

"She was about to give up when she noticed the man standing
in the background of the photo. She had noticed him before,
but thought nothing of it ... Now taking a closer look she
couldn't help but notice the resemblance the man had to
Mulder.

Pulling out her hand lens, she held it over the man. The
image was too fuzzy, she could barely tell if it was a man
or woman.

Dana jumped up, grabbed her purse and quickly ran down the
hall to the fr ont desk. "IS there a one hour Photo Booth
around here?" she asked the older woman behind the desk.

The woman nodded, "Yes as a matter of fact there is one
right across the street....I believe that he opens at nine
o'clock, but I could be wrong."

Dana glanced at her watch, "Thank you, I guess I'll have to
wait a half an hour." she smiled and headed towards the
front door.

She glanced around wondering what her new partner looked
like and who he was. She really didn't know why she had
agreed to have a partner, but so mething had told her too.

Deciding that it was close to 9:00 she made her way across
the street to t he one hour photo lab, a man was just
unlocking the door as she approached.

"Good morning." a bald man in his late fifties said. "How
may I help you?"

Dana pulled out the photograph, "I need this section of the
photograph en larged." she explained. "It's very
important." she pulled out her badge.

The man nodded, "Yes, I can do that Agent Scully...." he
circled the sect ion she had pointed to. "How quickly do
you need this?"

"As soon as possible....like I said...it's very important."
she pulled out the other photograph. "By any chance would
you know who developed this? I know that there must be a
zillion other shops around here, but I know that it came
from one of them."

The man took it from her and flipped it over. "I believe
that I did." he replied. "I remember this batch of pictures
vaguely."

"Why is that?" Dana asked curiously.

"Well..." he began turning around. "He asked that I make two
copies of th is batch and when he came back he only took
one.....he asked me to keep these." the man handed her an
envelope containing another group of photos.

"Can you by any chance tell me when these were taken?" she
asked.

The man nodded. "The man who took them was just taking the
roll of film out of his camera when he came in, so I assume
that they were taken the same day."

"Great..." she mumbled. That was what she had been afraid
of. "I'll be b ack in a half an hour....is that enough
time?"

The man nodded, "For you, the FBI, I can. Sign this
please." he handed her a slip of paper.

Dana sighed it then made her way back to her hotel. She had
exactly twel ve hours before she was to meet Agent Riece and
there was so much that ha d to be done.

First she wanted to call Frohike and the guys. She had
shown her badge to one of the Airmail pilots saying that it
was extremely important that the envelope got to DC the next
morning. the man had told her he would de liver it himself.

Once Dana reached her room she picked up her phone and
dialed the Lone Gunman's number.

"Langly." a man answered after the first ring.

"Hey it's Dana Scully." she said. "Did you get the
packages?"

"Yep....." Langly replied. There was a long pause before he
continued. "Dana the stuff on this disk can't be right."

Dan's heart sank. "Why?" she asked. "What is it?"

"First of all your late partner...." paused again. "Stumbled
across some sort of file dealing with the disappearance of
Samantha Mulder. It has a ton of names including that of
William Mulder."

"Mulder's father?" she asked. "What names?"

Dana there's a lot more." Byers said picking up on the
extension. "Are y u sitting down?"

"Yeah, why?" she was almost afraid to ask.

"It looks like Mulder stumbled across something that he
couldn't handle." Byers said. "Does anyone know you sent us
this?"

"No, why? What else did you find?"

"Dana, Mulder's a....." there was a loud click and then the
line went dead.

"Byers!" Dana cried. "What the fu...." there was knock at
the door. "Who is it!" she screamed. Then under her
breath she muttered. "Why the hell does fate keep doing
this to me? What the hell did I do to severer this."

"Agent Scully! It's Henry Rosen!" a man cried. "I own the
photo booth ac ross the street!"

Dana opened the door and let him in. "How did you know
where to find me? " she asked.

The man smiled. "I watched you enter the inn from my
store." he handed her a manila envelope. "here is your
picture....I figured you needed it quickly so I did it
myself."

Dana nodded and pulled out the photograph. A wave of
horror washed over her. With out another word she pushed
past Henry Rosen and made her way out of her room, leaving
the picture on the bed.........

Henry glanced down with a look of shock...he did not know
what made her act of strangely.....The picture showed a man
wearing dark glasses with a small mole on his cheek.

May 15. 2000
7:30 P.M.
Livingston Factory

Dana quietly opened the door of the factory. It had been
abandoned for y ears, there were piles of broken and termite
infested crates in the corne rs and old conver belts laid
crumpled on the floors. Rusted meat hooks l ined the walls
casting eerie shadows on the floor of the factory.

"Hello?" Dana cried. "Agent Riece, it's Agent Scully." she
wanted to get this meeting over now and fast. "Hello!!"

There was a loud thud, followed by a door slam. "Hello!"
she screamed again. Deciding that she was walking into a
trap, she pulled her gun from her holster and moved towards
the sound. "Hello!"

Dana could here footsteps moving away from her. "Agent
Riece?" she moved around the corner into an old store
room. Seeing a rat run by her, seh screamed. Her scream
rang out through the factory.....

"Hello?" she whispered.

She was about to leave when she saw a man ducking behind a
pile of boxes. "Stay right there!" she yelled. She could
hear him running away so she followed.

He was trapped, she had chased him into a small closet.
"Turn around slowly." she yelled. "I have a gun, so no
sudden moves."

Through the dim light she could just make out the figure.
He was tall, a bout 6"1, and wore a long black trench coat.
His hands went up into the air to surrender.

"It's me Scully." a deep familiar male voice whispered. "I
knew that I couldn't go through with this." he slowly
turned to so that his face was revealed.

Dana screamed, "No!!! No!!!" he heart began to race,
"Mulder?"

"There is so much good in the worst of us and so much bad
in the best of us. That it hardly becomes any of us to talk
about the rest of us." <An on>

May 15. 2000
7:30 P.M.
Livingston Factory

Through the dim light she could just make out the figure.
He was tall, a bout 6"1, and wore a long black trench coat.
His hands went up into the air to surrender.

"It's me Scully." a deep familiar male voice whispered. "I
knew that I c ouldn't go through with this." he slowly
turned so that his face was rev ealed.

Dana screamed, "No!!! No!!!" her heart began to race,
"Mulder?" her voice was weak and she did not trust her
eyes. What was going on? First the pictures, then the
disk and now here was Mulder.

She squeezed her eyes shut, praying that the hallucination
would pass. He was dead, she had seen him die....she had
felt his lips grow still bene ath hers. "Your dead." she
whispered. "I watched you die."

Mulder watched her silently. He knew that if he would just
slip past her and out the door, he could get away with it.
She would believe that she had seen a hallucination and
everything would go back to normal, but he couldn't just
leave. He watched her shoulders sag as she let out a huge
sob. He wanted nothing more than to comfort her, to hold
her, to take all of her pain away. The pain that he had
caused her.

Dana opened her eyes slowly, he was still there, it had not
been a halluc ination. "Why?" she cried. "Why are you
doing this to me!"

"I didn't know what else to do." he whispered. "I couldn't
stay there an d watch them kill you, so I compromised. It
took all the strength that I had to leave you."

Dana shook her head. <Run!> she told herself. <Run and
save your pride. > Whirling around she ran....she didn't
know where she was going but she ran. She was almost out of
the factory when someone grabbed her.

"Dana stop!" it was Mulder.

"Let me go!" she screamed. "And don't call me Dana."

Mulder nodded. He didn't have the right to call her Dana,
he had betraye d her and now, just like that he wanted back
into her life. He let her go....."I'm sorry." he whispered.
"I guess that this wasn't the best way to tell you this."
he backed away. "Go..., Skinner can find you a knew
partner."

Dana stared at him. "Partner?" she asked. "Your Agent
Riece?" Her head was spinning. <What the hell was going
on?> she wondered.

Mulder nodded again. "Yes, and I understand."

"No you don't!" Dana cried. "You got my best friend
killed." tears began to stream down her cheeks. "Tom knew
that you were alive and someone, maybe even you killed him
because he found out." she was angry. The words just
tumbled out. "Am I right! He stumbled upon your little
secret wi th the Cancer Man and was going to expose you, so
you killed him. You killed him you bastard! You killed
him!"

"No!" Mulder yelled. "I didn't kill him. Tom was my friend
too." he was shaking. He had to make her understand. "You
don't understand."

"I don't?" Dana asked smugly. "I understand perfectly. I
understand that your not who you say you are. I understand
that you made everyone think that you were dead......You
made me mourn for you, you made me cry for you, you made me
love you!!!! And for what? What the hell did I ever do
to you to make you hate me so much?"

Mulder didn't know what to say. "Will you let me explain?"
he asked. "Please? At least let me have that much."

Dana nodded, "Fine, explain." she leaned back against the
wall. "I'm waiting." She didn't want to listen she didn't
want to give him the satisfaction of an explanation. All
she wanted to do was run.

Mulder sighed. "They were going to kill you.....I made a
deal with them. They would let you live if I would die or
pretend to die. So I did." he looked down at his hands.
"They gave me a knew identity and a knew job in the FBI. I
took it. I never thought about what I was doing to you or
what I was doing to everything." he looked back up at her
with watery eyes. "They're giving me a second chance and a
chance to work back at the X-Files and I want to take it."0B
Dana turned away, she couldn't trust him anymore, there was
nothing left to trust. How did she know that this wasn't
some sort of trap that she was walking into? "Then you can
work with out me because I quit." she through her gun down
and began to walk away.

She heard Mulder grab the gun off the ground. <Oh no.> she
thought. <Th is is it. He's going to kill me.> Her
muscles began to stiffen as she w alked towards the car.
She knew that walking away from him before he got a chance
to explain more thoroughly was going to be the biggest
mistake of her life, but she couldn't stand it. She
couldn't stand the pain that was coming back to her after
three long and hard years of living with ou t him. The
pain was almost overwhelming.

Mulder could see how scared she was. <Does she actually
think that I'd s hoot her?> he wondered. "Scully,
please...." he ran up to walk beside her. "Please, I'm not
asking you to trust me. I'm just asking that you work with
me."

Dana faced him. "Why?" she asked. "Why would I do that?
We both know that with out trust you can't have a good
partnership."

Mulder shook his head. "I don't know." he admitted. "But I
had this dre am." he smiled sadly. "I had this dream that
you would forgive me.....that you would hug me and say that
you would never leave me. I guess that will never happen."

Dana laughed. "That's why they call them dreams Mulder."
she took a deep breath. "I'll work with you, but I won't do
anything more." she paused. "You don't call me outside of
the office, you don't stop by my apart ment, you don't think
about me, you don't protect me, we don't see one an other
outside of the office, we're nothing more than
partners...and I'm not even sure that we're partners.
You'll have to work up to the partner title."

Mulder nodded, "Fine.....That's all I want."

"So tell me.....why all the hints?" she asked. "It was you
who gave me t hat picture, wasn't it?" she pulled a huge
manila envelope and threw it to him. "It took me a few days
to catch on but I finally did."

Mulder nodded, "I was going to Tom's funeral too. And I saw
you on the plane.....I wanted you to know and that was the
only way I could get you to think." he turned away. "You
never even suspected that I was alive?"

Dana ignored his question, "You know...Tom was my best
friend.....I trusted him more than I've ever trusted anyone.
We worked together and I really grew to like him." she shook
her head. "You took all of that way from me.....you took
away the one person I could talk to."

Mulder flinched. She had trusted Crawford more than she
trusted him. <She just saying that because she's mad.> he
thought to himself. <She just wants to hurt you and make
you pay for what you did.> "I guess I deserv ed that." he
mumbled. "But I didn't kill him, I don't know who did, but
I didn't kill him. You have to believe me Scully."

Dana shook her head, "Why should I? I guess I don't know
what to believe. I mean you made me think that you were
dead....I can't believe how good that was all put
together."

"It was the only way, Scully. When you left me, I realized
that the pain eventually goes away. I made myself suffer, I
took a bullet trying to end it all." he sighed. "And when I
didn't die I asked that they take me away.....I never meant
to hurt you the way I did. I asked you to let me go, and you
said you would. I figured that was enough to live on, but I
was wrong.....I got in over my head. You know I would never
hurt you inten tionally."

"Your right, the pain eventually does go away....." Dana
lied. "After a while your able to smile again, and then
that empty feeling you have deep in your heart begins to
subside and it's filled with your work and eventually it's
replaced by the need to work." she smiled. "And then you
eve ntually go numb and then people say that your cold and
that you don't have any feelings or emotions. But the whole
time they don't understand the battle your fighting inside,
the battle to stay in control. So your right Agent
Mulder,..." she paused. "Or should I say agent Riece. Your
right, the pain does eventually leave."

Mulder reached out to her but she shrugged away. "Okay...."
he mumbled. "Let's talk about why you were called to meet me
here."

Dana nodded, "Yeah, I was just about to ask why we had to
meet at this da mn factory."

Mulder laughed...."I knew that if I chickened out like I
almost did, I'd have plenty of running space. But
seriously.....I asked that you come he re to help me figure
out what else Crawford found."

"Okay, why don't we grab some dinner and talk about it on
the way back to the hotel. I think that we can at least do
that much."

A half an hour later Dana lead Mulder through the crowded
hotel lobby and to her room. She didn't really trust him,
but they had to talk and her room seemed like the only
place to do so.

"Scully." Mulder said stopping outside her door. "Were you
really that shocked to find me alive?"

Dana ushered him in, "Hell, Mulder!" she cried. "What do
you think? I a lways figured that you'd be honest with me
and you faked your death. You made me think that you were
dead!"

"Scully I'm sorry. I know that doesn't mean much, but I did
it all for you."

"For me?" she asked. "Mulder your lucky I haven't slapped
you and shot you with my gun."

Mulder laughed, "Scully I still have your gun." he pulled
it from his pocket and handed it to her. "So shoot me, if
your going to you better get it over with because I'm not
going to sit around and wait for you to do it when I'm not
paying attention."

"Mulder! I'm serious!" She screamed. "Your lucky that I'm
even talking to you." Dana went over to one of the double
beds and sat down. "You should probably go get a room
before they are all filled up."

Mulder nodded, "I'll be right back and then we can talk
about what's goin g on."

Dana watched him leave and then she turned and picked up the
phone. Maki ng sure that Mulder was gone she punched in
Frohike's number and listened to it ring. There was no
answer and after about ten rings the answering machine
picked up.

"This is you know who and you know where so you know what to
do." Frohike 's voice boomed out over the machine.

"Guys!" Dana yelled. "It's me, Dana. Pick up if your
there."

"Dana!" Frohike cried picking up. "Dana where the hell have
you been? I never got the chance to tell you that Mulder's
al...."

"Alive...." Dana finished. "I know. I found out the hard
way. I was su pposed to meet my new partner Agent Riece in
this old factory, but boy did I get a huge surprise." she
laughed. "Do you know what it's like to find out that your
dead partner is also your knew partner?"

"No but I can imagine the shock you must have gotten." he
replied. "Appa rently Mulder has been working for the
violent crime division under the name Ryan Riece. His who
history is on this disk you gave me."

"What else was on the disk?" she asked.

"I can't say over the phone." Frohike answered. "We'll have
to talk abou t it when you get back." he paused. "Are you
going to stay with the X-Files?"

"I don't know." she said truthfully. "Mulder lied to me. I
don't trust him anymore." she paused. "I can't trust him
anymore. In a job like mine, you have to have trust or the
side affects can be deadly. I think that my job at the X-
Files is over and so is my partnership with Agent Mulder."

"All right, I'll talk to you when you get back to DC."

"Okay, thanks, Frohike." Dana said then hung up.

**************
Mulder turned away from the door. He hadn't had much luck
in getting a room for the night so he had come back to ask
Scully if he could stay with her. Only he had heard what she
said to Frohike and he really couldn't blame her.

He had betrayed and hurt her, he didn't expect her to
welcome him back in to her life. Not just like that any
way. He had to regain her trust and make her see that he
was still the same old Mulder who she had know and loved.

<I'll show her.> he thought. <I'll make her see that she
can trust me.>

Sensing his presence, Dana turned around and smiled. "Did
you get a room ?" she asked hopefully..

Mulder shook his head. "No, there's some kind of party here
and every si ngle room in the Inn is taken."

Dana groaned. "You can stay here." she mumbled. "But don't
expect me to stay awake all night listening to your whining.
If I hear one sound out of you, your out of here."

Mulder nodded, "I haven't been having bad dreams for along
time." he lied. "You don't have to worry." The truth was
that he hadn't slept in mon ths. His dreams were always
haunted by things he could not remember when he awoke.

Grabbing her keys off the dresser, Dana headed towards the
door. "Don't wait up." she said. "I have some things to
do."

Mulder was about to say something but she was already gone.

"Here's a sigh for those who love me and a smile for those
who hate me, and whatever sky's above me, here's heart for
any fate." <Byron; 'To Thomas Moore'>

11:30 P.M.

Dana knew that it was way out of her character to go out and
get drunk, but she couldn't help it. Mulder's being alive
was just too much for her to handle. She knew that if she
went back now she'd want to talk about where he'd been and
what he'd been up to, but at that moment she wasn't in the
mood.

How did he expect her to act? Did he really expect her to
run into his arms and forget that he had lied to her, the he
had betrayed her?

Dana stood up, "I'm outta here." she mumbled and headed back
towards her room. She opened her door to find Mulder curled
up in the bead nearest the window. It really hadn't sunk
in yet that Mulder was still alive, it was still like she
was trapped in a dream.

"Do you want to talk now?" Mulder asked. He rolled over to
face her.

Dana shrugged, "I thought you were asleep." she sat down to
face him.

He leaned up on one elbow, "No actually I was waiting for
you to get back from where ever you went. You and I really
need to talk Scully."

"We already did." Dana mumbled. "Isn't that what we did at
the factory?" She knew that they hadn't covered very much
but she wasn't in the mood to talk. <I should have stayed
to have another drink.> she thought.

"No.....we have to really talk. Do you remember the day you
got the X-Files back?"

Dana nodded, "It wasn't that long ago, March 14th. But of
course you know that, you were at the cemetery watching me."

Mulder nodded and continued, "I met with the....."

Dana held up her hand, "Please, I don't want to here about
your involvement with that man. He's.....he..." she paused
thinking back to that day in the cemetery.

*"I did not kill your partner." the Cancer Man had replied
when she had accused him of killing Mulder. "I always
protected him from the truth as a matter of fact." he had
said. "I took care of the man who killed Agent Mulder."

"No....!" she had cried. "You hid him from the truth."

"No, I protected him from it." the man had opened the
passenger side door of his car for her. "Get in...... I'll
explain it all to you."

She had agreed and sat down, "Tell me." she said. "What
were you protecting him from?"

"His father and I were good friends, we worked together. I
was protecting him from the truth about his sister. If he
had found out the truth you two would have been dead along
time ago." the man had answered.*

"He said he was protecting you from the truth....he said
that he never wa nted to hide anything from you, but it was
a promise that he made with yo ur father." she shook her
head. "Mulder, every thing was a set up! You lied to me!"

"Skinner didn't know I was alive until a year and a half
after I died. He saw me talking to them and he confronted
me. After that I was working for him again.....but I never
thought about the X-Files, I only thought a bout finishing
what I was doing, going home, and doing the same every day."
he smiled but his eyes were full of grief. "I never had
much to li ve for, I gave up everything when I left. It was
a mistake...and if I had known what I was getting into I
would never have done it...I would have run away to God
knows where to protect you. I don't know who it was, but
someone was going to kill you....I couldn't let them do it,
I just couldn't."

Dana sighed. She wasn't about to let him off the hook that
easily. "Mulder, we don't have to talk about this now....."
she laughed. "And to think that I felt guilty leaving you
when you were sick. Were you even sick ?"

Mulder nodded, "Yeah, I was worried and confused. I had
just started getting these weird calls and notes....and on
top of all that I couldn't han dle the cases Skinner kept
giving me. I understood when you left that it was for my
and your own good, but it still hurt. I remember crying for
you for a couple days after you left......I remember wanting
to hold you and feel you against me, but I finally worked
up enough courage to go bac k to work and stick it out."

"How long were you watching me?" she asked Thinking back
to that day in the cemetery. Just thinking about Mulder
watching her mourn for him made her boiling mad.

"That day at the cemetery?" he thought for a moment. "I was
going to mee t someone and saw you. I felt so bad seeing
you there. I was watching you for about an hour I guess. I
didn't realize how much I missed you until I saw you there.
But I realized that you hadn't changed that much."

"Three years is along time Mulder. You don't know me
anymore and it'll be to hard to get to know me all over
again. We can't be partners." she stood up. "I don't know
what Skinner was thinking......did her actually think that
I'd be happy about this? I mean you can't just walk back
into my life and expect me to be happy about it.. I really
wish that it were as simple as that."

"Can't you give me another chance." Mulder begged. "You can
learn to trust me again. "

"I don't think that I can.....and I shouldn't have too. I
shouldn't have to learn to trust you again. My trust died
with you." she shook her head. She knew that her next
comment would really hurt him but she had to t ell him. "I
with that you had died Mulder. Maybe if you had I wouldn't
be so messed up." she stood up. "Better yet, I wish that we
had never met. I'll never under stand why I had to be the
one partnered up with you." With that she walked to the
bathroom and closed the door behind her.

Mulder sighed and sat up. "Hey Scully!" he yelled. "I'm
going to go out side and blow the back of my head off, ok?"

Dana didn't answer. <Damn her!> he thought angrily. <She
can't do this to me.> Standing up he went over to the
bathroom and kicked the door open.

Dana, who was staring at her reflection in the mirror turned
around and g lared at him angrily. "Do you mind!" she
screamed. "You can't just kick the door open and barge in
on me!"

"You know!" Mulder yelled. "Fate brought us together!" he
grabbed her and pulled her back into the room. He knew that
he was hurting her but he didn't care. He had to make her
see. "Your fate was judged,.....from the
moment you were first conceived your life was written.
Every sneeze, every kiss, every love......it's all written."
he sat down and looked at h er. "It took me over twenty
five years to realize that I couldn't have s aved my sister.
I couldn't have because her life, our lives and our fate was
already decided." he sighed heavily before continuing. "Do
you remember that case with Clyde Bruckman?"

Dana nodded, "Yeah....But Mulder that's different.... you."

Mulder cut her off. "No it's not......we talked about the
future being w ritten already and because it was already
written, trying to prevent it from happening was useless.
Mr. Bruckman was able to see the future because it was
already written. He had asked me if I wanted to know how I
was going to die. I told him I did, but he said that I
didn't. He said tha t not knowing had it's drawbacks but
in the long run it would be a lot safer, because then we
wouldn't have people running around trying to change their
fate." he paused to think. "Who knows, Maybe Samantha was
suppos ed to live a short life, maybe she was some sort of
pawn in the game of chess you and I keep playing. If
Samantha hadn't disappeared we may have never met, I might
not have been interested in the X-Files, I may not have
believed in the paranormal and then you wouldn't have been
asked to work with me. It's all fate Scully, it's
destiny."

"Mulder when I asked him how I was going to die he told me I
didn't...... everyone dies Mulder."

"No....you don't understand. He wasn't talking about our
death deaths he was talking about our end." Mulder took her
hand in his. "He saw the death of our partnership.... he
didn't bother going ahead because...." Mulder's voice
trailed off. "What I'm trying to say...is that I believe
that in the end we're all judged. Our fate is decided by
the deeds we do in life.......so in the end whether or not
we live or die it's already written."

Dana pulled her hand away, "Maybe." she whispered. "So how
am I supposed to know if your worth it. How do I know that
you won't run off and leave me like you used too? I'm
willing to give you another chance, but we're going to have
to compromise. I'm not going to sit around and wait for you
to get yourself killed. I won't do it."

"Tell me what needs to be done and I'll do it. I promise
that I won't run off unless I tell you and ask you if you
want to run off with me." he grinned."

Dana smiled back. She knew that it would take a lot of time
to get used to the idea of having him for a partner again,
but the time was worth it. She was determined to make it
work even if it killed her. "I don't know if I can ever
forgive you for what you did, but I can push my feelings
aside to work with you."

"I'm not asking you to forgive me right now.....but some day
you'll forgive me." he gently touched her cheek. "I know
you will. It's not in you to stay mad forever. I know
that you haven't changed that much. Under t hat protective
shield you've built up around yourself is the same old Scu
lly."

"Does anyone else know that your alive besides Skinner?"
Dana asked, deciding to change the subject.

Mulder shook his head, "No.....I always thought that you'd
be the first to know if I ever told anyone." he laughed.
"Some times I'd pick up the phone to call you, but after I'd
dial your number I would remember that you were about the
last person I could call. I missed you so much."

"Well, I can't promise that I'll be a very good partner
because the trust just isn't there, but I do promise to try.
You'll just have to give me some time." Dana stood up.
"Let me get changed and then we can finish this
conversation."

"Thanks." Mulder whispered. "I really didn't expect you to
be this nice about everything."

Dana was about to respond but thought better of it. She
wasn't going to let him off the hook that easily. "I'll be
out in a minute."

12:15 A.M.
Place Not Known

"This isn't the right disk!" the Cancer Man cried. "For
once can't you d o something right?"

The other man nodded, "What was I supposed to do....knock
her out and sea rch her office....I had to take her word for
it. I figured that she was more honest than Mulder."

The Cancer Man shook his head, "Do you know what'll happen
if that disk falls into Agent Mulder's hands?" he cried.
"I'll be ruined.....he must never know the truth. For years
I have protected him from the truth I have hidden it from
him and now......." he didn't know what was going to happen.
He didn't want to know or even think about the outcome.
"And now all of my hard work will go down the drain."

"What do you want me to do?" the other man asked.

The Cancer man did not know what to do. He couldn't just
grab the disk from them and he didn't believe that they even
knew what was on the disk.

He could think of only one thing.....one thing that would
save him as we ll as everything he had worked for. "Kill
them." he whispered. "Kill Agent Scully first. There's a
good chance that Agent Mulder doesn't know about the disk
and if he doesn't I want him spared."

"Why protect Agent Mulder?"

"I made a promise to someone along time ago...." the Cancer
Man replied. "A very long time ago and I never break my
promises. So spare agent Mulder, but kill agent Scully....I
want them separated again, it wasn't a good idea to have
them work together."

"What if agent Scully has made more than one copy of that
disk?"

"Then you'll just have to get them back, now won't you?"

The other man nodded, "Yes sir......I'll gladly kill agent
Scully."

******************
4:30 AM

"Your in danger, Dana." Melissa said approaching her sister.
"You have to leave Mulder.....he has endangered you."

Dana shook her head, "No way.....I just got him back.
There's no way in hell that I'm going to leave him again.
Besides, why should I listen to you.... everything you've
said so far has been wrong."

Melissa laughed, "I tell it like I see it sis. So Fox isn't
dead, but you will be if you stick with him."

"What do you mean?" Dana asked. "Mulder would never kill
me....he had the chance to today and he didn't."

"I never said that he would kill you....I just said that you
would be in danger if you stayed with him. You have
something that they want and they are willing to kill you to
get it. So if you want take Mulder and hide...get away and
don't come back."

Dana shook her head, "No....this time I'm not listening to
you."

Melissa shrugged, "All right Dana, suit yourself." she said
then disappeared.

Dana sat up with a start. "Mulder!" she cried. She
couldn't remember her dream but she knew that they had to
get out of there.

Mulder sat up, "What....?" he looked at her sleepily.
"What's wrong?"

"I....I..." she sighed. "Never mind, I can't remember." she
settled back down beneath the covers of her bed.

Mulder shook his head, "I know that look Scully." he moved
over to sit on her bed. "Was it a nightmare?"

Dana sighed. The concern in his voice helped ease her quick
heart beat, but she felt uncomfortable with him sitting so
close. "Mulder, it's nothi ng go back to sleep......I'll be
fine." she rolled over just enough so that he could not see
her face. If he had been able to see how uncomforta ble she
felt, she knew that they wouldn't be able to work together.

"Okay." Mulder whispered. He began to reach out to her, but
stopped half way. <She'd probably bight my hand off.> he
thought and moved back over to his bed. He watched her
drift back to sleep before he closed his eyes. It felt so
strange being close to her again, he wasn't used to having
anyone near.

He used to lay awake at night trying to picture what she was
doing. When he had left, there was only one picture he
could find of her to take with him. It had been of them
standing outside her apartment building in Bo ston. He had
been in a hurry so there hadn't been much time to find anyt
hing else. Besides, he knew that if he took too much or
anything of importance Dana or his mother would know that it
was missing and he couldn't risk that.

Mulder rolled over so that he could see out the window.
There was something out there. What? He did no know. Out
in he distance, by Dana's rental car he could see the faint
light of what seemed to be a cigarette lighter or possibly
the burning ember from the butt of a cigarette.

As quietly as he could, he slipped out of bed and got
dressed. Then, careful not to wake his partner, he left the
room. He made his way out the t o the parking lot, to where
he had seen the light. Only now the lot was deserted.
Deciding that he had been dreaming he turned to go back to
hisroom but stopped when he felt something cold pressed
against his neck.

"I was waiting for you." someone whispered in his ear.

Mulder turned to find him self face to face with the barrel
of a gun.

Deciding that he had been dreaming he turned to go back to
his room but stopped when he felt something cold pressed
against his neck.

"I was waiting for you." someone whispered in his ear.

Mulder turned to find him self face to face with the barrel
of a gun. "What do you want?" he asked. "Where is he?"

"I'm right here." Another man said walking from a nearby
car. "Your partner has something that we want.....and I'm
afraid that I'll stop at nothing to get it back and I mean
nothing." he smiled. "Do you get my drift Agent Mulder?"

Mulder nodded, "What does she have?" he asked. "And you
better not touch her. So help me God, I don't care who you
are.....if you lay a finger on her I'll kill you.....I'll
kill you."

The man took a puff of his cigarette. "All right....you get
what we want back and I won't do anything rash." he patted
Mulder on the shoulder. " It's so good to have you back
with Agent Scully.....you too made such a cute couple. "

Mulder wanted to shoot the man standing before him. He had
taken three y ears of his life away. The man stole the time
that he could have spent with the woman he loved and it
hurt. "What does she have that belongs to you?" he
repeated. "Tell me and I'll get it for you. Just don't
hurt her."

The Cancer man nodded. "I can't tell you what it is, but if
Agent Scully knows what she possesses I'm afraid that she'll
have to die or...." he laughed. "Or you can....but I don't
think that you want to die and I als o suggest that you
don't ask her about it......she may think that your
curiosity may be some kind of set up. Your going to have to
wait until she trusts you enough to confide in you."

"She did trust me!" he screamed. "She did trust me, but now
she won't even forgive me. You did this to me and I don't
even know why." he was shaking. "Why did you have to make
me leave....I'll bet that you were neve r going to kill her.
What the hell are you hiding?"

"You'll see someday." the other man whispered. "Now
go....before that pr etty partner of yours gets suspicious."

Mulder glared at the two men then nodded, "Yeah....that's
all I need." he mumbled and ran back to his room.

******************
Scully turned away from the window angrily. "What the hell
is going on?" she mumbled and went back to her bed. She had
seen Mulder leave the two men so she figured that he was
headed back to her.

She was about to turn on the light when she heard the door
opening quietly. "Why, Mulder?" she asked through the
darkness. "What's going on with you and those men?"

Mulder sighed and sat down across from her. He had thought
she'd been as leep when he had left, but he had obviously
been wrong. He didn't know ho w he was going to get out
of this one. "It's not what you think, I saw a
light out there and went to investigate." he reached for her
hand. "Scully you've got to believe me....it wasn't what
you think."

Dana pulled her hand away. "Fine Mulder. " she stood up.
"This is why I don't want to work with you. How do I know
that your not working with t he Cancer man. For all I know
you could be a clone." she shuttered remembering the time
she had been attached by a clone who looked like Mulder. She
couldn't look at him, she couldn't let him see her agony and
revere.

"Believe what you want Scully, but when it comes to the
truth I'm the onl y one who will be honest." he grabbed her
by the shoulders. "Look at me Scully!" he screamed. "God
dammit look at me!"

Dana shook her head and jerked away. "I can't believe you!"
she cried. "Damn you Mulder! Do you know what this looks
like. You still haven't to ld me who wanted to kill me..."
she looked up at him. "Or was that all a lie so that you
could wiggle your way back into my life?"

"Scully, how many times do we have to go over this? I can't
tell you.... but you have to trust me. Please..... please
trust me again."

"Fine....." she whispered. "I trust that you'll tell me the
truth. You can stop your begging now." she looked at the
clock. "Do we have anymore business to take care of here?
If we hurry we might be able to catch the next flight back
to DC."

"Scully it's 4:30 A.M. you can't be serious."

"I'm very serious Agent Mulder. I'm not tired anymore and
you look wide awake, so tell me, are we all finished here
or was there something that we needed to look into?" she
began throwing her clothes in her overnight bag. "Skinner
said that he wanted me to investigate the circumstances sur
rounding Toms death."

Mulder shook his head, "That was the plan to get you here."
he smiled. " Tom's death had something to do with me, but I
couldn't tell you what...."

***************
May 16, 2000
10:30 A.M.
J. Edgar Hoover Building

As Mulder and Scully pushed their way through the corridors
of the FBI bu ilding people stopped and stared. All of the
agents who had known agent Mulder stared with disbelief as
he and his partner passed.

"Isn't that Fox Mulder?" Agent Newman asked his partner as
the two agents passed by him. Newman knew Mulder from the
academy and you could say th at they hadn't been that close.

His partner Agent Roberts nodded, "Yeah, but it couldn't be.
He was killed, I was there that day when he was shot....."
Roberts was suddenly con fused. "That can't be agent
Mulder.....can it?"

Newman whistled, "He and Agent Scully sure seem like they're
in a hurry....I wonder what's up."

"Well, if it is agent Mulder, what do you think would be
up?" Roberts asked.

"A flying saucer?"

Down the hall, outside Skinner's office, the receptionist
looked up in shock...."Agent Mulder?" she cried not sure of
what to say. She knew that it couldn't have been the same
Fox Mulder who she had once known, but it looked like him.

Mulder smiled. "We need to see Skinner right now." he
mumbled.

"He's in a meeting." the receptionist said. "I could
te....."

Dana cut her off, "I don't care if he's in a meeting with
the f***ing president of the United States. We're going to
talk to him right now." she didn't wait for the
receptionist to answer. Instead she pushed her way by and
threw open Skinners door.

"Excuse me!" Skinner cried, jumping up from his desk. "What
do you think your doing. You can't just barge in here."

Dana shook her head and moved aside so that Mulder could get
by. "Yes I can!" she cried. "First of all I'd like to
know why you thought I'd be happy about this." she motioned
to Mulder. "Do you actually think that it's healthy to have
something this big dropped on someone so fast! I wou ld
like to know why you thought that this was a good idea. I
sure didn't think it was."

Skinner glanced at Mulder. He didn't know what to say. He
hadn't been expecting Agent Scully's reaction. He'd expected
her to be angry, but she was being cold. "Why don't you
ask your partner?" he asked. "I mean he obviously said
something about this."

"I don't think so." Scully whispered. "I listened to
Mulder's explanation and now I want to listen to yours. Is
this procedure Skinner?"

Skinner sighed, "Sit down agent Scully, Mulder?" he motioned
to the vacant chairs in front of his desk. "I got word that
they wanted me to reassign agent Mulder to the X-
Files.....so I had to come up with a plan to bring you back
together. Agent Scully, Agent Mulder agreed to it....so I
am not at fault. He could have changed his mind at any
time....but by the looks of things he didn't."

Mulder smiled. "I almost chickened out. She chased me into
a closet and pulled a gun on me so I didn't have much
choice. I knew that I'd have to face her one day."

Skinner laughed, "So are you two going to work together or
is there going to be blood shed?"

Dana shrugged and eyes Mulder curiously. "It depend on
Mulder's honesty. So far you both have lied to me. So I
don't know."

"Scully, I said that I would never lie to you." Mulder
mumbled. "Give me a chance."

"You too can work this out with out me." Skinner said
standing up. "Go to your office and talk. I have a ton
of work to do and I was about to go to a meeting."

"All right." Mulder agreed. "But what the hell do I tell
all of the oth er agents who see me in the halls? They all
know I'm dead. You should have seen some of the looks I was
getting out there in the hallway. I'm just waiting for
someone to pull me aside and do DNA testing."

Dana laughed, "We'll think of something Mulder."

"If you have any problems with anyone....." Skinner said.
"Come to me and I'll straighten everything out."

"Thanks." Mulder said then followed his partner out the
door. Agent's we re already lined up in the halls waiting
to catch a glimpse of him. "Scully!" he cried. "People are
staring at us."

"Come on just walk by and ignore them." Dana said under her
breath so that only Mulder could hear her. "We'll think of
something to say later." she lead him to the elevator and
pushed down. "Our office is the same way we left it four
years ago. I haven't been in it much to change it."

Mulder shook his head with disbelief. "God, was it was that
long ago?"

Dana nodded, "We were investigating that case involving
those little girl s deaths and reincarnations. You came and
got me and said that Skinner was pulling us and that the X-
Files were finished." she led him into their office.

The walls were still covered in posters of UFO's, flying
saucers, pictures of their past cases and shelves full of
films and books. They still had two desks at either sides
of the room and filing cabinets against one wall.

"I was so mean to you." Mulder mumbled. "I accused you of
murdering Tammy Erins and after that we really lost each
other. We had a few short flings but that was it."

"People change Mulder." Dana said turning to face him.
"Peoples feelings change. When you left I had to learn to
live with out you. It took me along time to realize that I
couldn't give up and stop trying. No matter how much I
wanted to relinquish, I kept searching and believing because
you did. All of those years of searching for your
sister.... helped me, it gave me the strength needed to
carry on."

"So.....what are you saying Scully?"

She shrugged, "I don't know.....all I'm saying is that I
never stopped looking for you. I found a little bit of you
in everything I did and I gradually came to grips with what
happened between us."

"And what was that?" Mulder asked softly. He moved in
closer to her, but she moved away.

"That we had nothing." she lied. "What we had was over when
it started...It was all a mistake. When you think about
it....we were there for each other in the most trying times
of our lives...that night you told me you loved me......."
she thought back to that night.

<<<<"For the last couple of months I've been having these
nightmares." Mulder had told her. "Your always getting
killed or hurt, and I try...." his words had been so flooded
with emotion that she had been afraid to move, "God, Scully
believe me, I try to protect you, but it's not enough." he
took another deep breath and continued. "I....I... love you
to much to let you die."

"You love me?" she had asked. The shock from his words had
made her freeze in her place, all she could do was sit there
and stare into his eyes. <God, his eyes.> she remembered
thinking. <There so beautiful.>

"I'm sorry." he had apologized.>>>>

"You were so upset....you even apologized." Dana shook her
head sadly. Then that night I was sick and then all of
those other times. We always found each other in the times
of trouble, never just because we felt the love. I think
that it was just because we were there and there was someone
to cling too."

Mulder nodded. He didn't want to argue with her, but knew
that it was not true. There had been something more
than just passion, they both knew it. They had loved one
another and nothing else. "Maybe your right." he said
deciding to play along, but he would show her that she was
wrong.

"This is not the time or place to talk about this." Dana
handed him a sta ck of folders. "Let's not forget about our
agreement, we keep our relati onship a strict partnership
nothing else. So at 5:30 or what ever time we leave the
office, that's it. That is unless there's a case that needs
our attention...then you can call me."

Mulder nodded, "Now what are these files you just handed
me?"

"File them." she instructed him. "It's about time someone
did it."

"Why do I have too?" he asked. "Why can't you. I'm not
your personal slave agent Scully."

"Well, if you want me to figure out what we are going to
tell everyone about your rising from the dead, you better
let me think." she smiled. "Now they really have a reason
to call you *Spooky* Mulder."

Mulder through a wadded up piece of paper at her. "We can
just act like it never happened. Or we could at least try
couldn't we."

"No....I don't think that would work. Mulder you have to
tell your mother. She'll find out and then...." Dana
shuttered. "Mulder this is really going to hurt her."

Mulder nodded, "Yeah,...will you go out to Chilmark with me
this weekend? I'd feel a little bit more comfortable if you
were there to back me up."

"Muld.....er! It's your mess.....you get yourself out of
it. I refuse to back you up when you did the same thing
to your mother as you did to me."

"Fine....I'll do it myself." he turned away from her and
went to work on filing the folders.

Dana sighed, "Mulder, your really starting to bug me." she
went over to him and laid a hand on his shoulder. "I'll go
to Chilmark with you."

Mulder turned around and smiled. "You will?" he asked
hopefully.

"Yes, but you have to promise me that you won't make me
explain everything to her. She's your mother and I don't
want to make it look like I knew about this the whole time."

"Thanks." Mulder hugged her quickly then pulled away.
"Sorry I forgot about out agreement....it won't happen
again."

Dana laughed, "Mulder.....I'm going to run to the rest room.
I'll be right back."

10:45 A.M.
J. Edgar Hoover Building

As Dana made her way down the halls to the rest room she
tried not to not ice the way people stared at her. They
were watching her with such intensity that it made her
angry. She could hear them whispering in the corne rs. "Do
you mind!" she yelled. "What is everyone's problem?"

Agent Peters, one of the bureaus oldest agents, stepped
forward. "Will you clear something up for us?" he asked.

Dana nodded, "Yes, what can I do for you?"

"Would you explain how agent Mulder is suddenly back from
the grave?" he motioned to the crowd of Agents. "A lot of
us were at his funeral. We h eard you give his eulogy and
yet today most of us have seen him walking through the halls
with you. We were just wondering how all of this is
possible."

"Well for starters." she said. "I never knew that agent
Mulder was alive. I was called in to investigate a friends
death and he just sort of showed up. He was on special
assignment and had to change identities and the only way he
could do that was by faking his death."

"Is he back to work with you?" Peterson asked.

"Yes, he was assigned to be my partner once again.....but
that matter doesn't concern you." she gave him one last
look then made her way through the crowd. Instead of
heading towards the rest room she decided to go ba ck to the
office.

Mulder looked up as she entered, "What's wrong?" he asked.
"You look upset."

Dana nodded, "I must have had the whole bureau crowded
around me out there."

Mulder laughed, "What'd you tell them?"

"The truth." Dana replied. "I just said that you had been
on assignment for the past three years and had to fake your
death to start up a new identity. I left before they could
ask me anymore questions." she was just about to sit down
when her phone rang. "Scully." she said answering.

"Hey it's Langly." the man on the other end said. "I thing
you should come over here right away. You may be in
danger."

Dana glanced at Mulder then turned away. "What about
Mulder?" she whispered. She could see Mulder watching her
out of the corner of her eye, but she pretended not to
notice. Any bad move could put her in hot water.

"No...."Langly cried. "Just you. It's important. Tell
Mulder that you have to run a couple of errands and if he
follows you, lose him. It's not safe yet."

"Okay.....I'll be there in half an hour." she said quickly
scribbling dow n the address. Then she hung up. With a
quick wave to Mulder she said, "I have to go get my....."
she looked around. her computer was at her ap artment so
she used that for an excuse "Computer from my apartment.
Some thing happened to it the other day and I guess I forgot
dropping it off on my way to Rhode Island." she smiled.
"Will you be all right here, by yourself, for a couple of
hours?"

Mulder nodded, but didn't believe her. "Do you want me to
go?" he asked. "We could pick up lunch then head go........"

Dana shook her head, cutting him off. "No....I'll see you
later." with that she headed towards the parking garage.

Making sure that Mulder wasn't following her she headed
towards the address Langly had given her. After what seemed
like hours she turned into a small drive just outside DC.
The drive led up to a small house that she would have
guessed to be vacant, but when she saw Frohike sitting cross
legged in a swing on the porch she knew that she had the
right place.

"Dana!" Frohike cried, rushing towards her. He nearly
tripped trying to reach her.

"Hi..." she mumbled hugging him. "It's been a while.

Frohike nodded and lead her into the house. "I must say
that we were surprised to hear from you after three years."
he was saying as he walked. "We haven't seen you since
Mulder's so-called funeral."

Dana nodded and smiled politely. "I couldn't think of
anyone else to cal l. You three were always the best at
this type of stuff and since Mulder trusted you...I...." she
stopped. What kind of mess was she getting herself into?
She was making it sound as if she didn't like them. "I mean
we were....." he voice trailed off.

"It's all right." Frohike said softly as Byers and Langly
approached. "I know what you mean."

"Dana! It's great to see you." Langly and Byers said hugging
her.

Dana pulled away. "Hi, guys....it's been a while."

Dana took in the sight of the three men. Langly had cut his
hair....the usual mass of blond hair that was tied behind
his head in a pony tail was now cut short just below the
ears. Byers was still his usual well dressed self and
hadn't changed much. But Frohike, now that Dana had a
chance to look at him, looked tired a wore out. He had dark
circles under his eyes and had lost some weight since she'd
last seen him. Worry lines creased his forehead.

"Okay." she said making not that she would have to talk to
Frohike later. "What did you want to see me about. I don't
have much time. I think Mulder was suspicious when I
wouldn't let him come with me."

Langly lead her over to his computer. "That disk you gave
us has a lot o f classified information. I would guess
that there has to be another disk out there. It's no wonder
that they had to kill Crawford.....there's en ough on this
to really piss off the government if it ever got out into
the public. Not to mention a few certain individuals who
will remain nameless for the time being." he tapped *enter*
on the key board and a picture flashed up on screen. It was
a picture of Samantha Mulder. "Samantha Ann Mulder, born
January 22nd 1964." he said. "X-File X-42053 she......"

Dana held up her hand, "Wait....this is all about Mulder's
sister?" she asked. "Why isn't he here instead of me?"

"Because I don't believe that he can handle what we are
about to tell you." Byers answered. "he's not ready for the
truth, and to tell you the truth I don't know if your quite
ready either. There's so much that we haven't even looked
at yet and the stuff we have looked at isn't that great."

"What the hell am I supposed to tell Mulder?" she asked. "I
don't think that it's fair to tell me before you tell him."

Frohike shrugged, "Suit yourself." he muttered and left the
room.

Dana stared off him curiously. "What's wrong with him?"
She couldn't help but notice how gloomy the three men
seemed. Was what she had given them that terrible? If it
was she didn't want to know, and she was sure Mulder didn't
either.

Byers and Langly exchanged glances. "He's been having a
hard time with what we found out." Byers replied. "He's
been trying to find out why all of this happened and he's
lost a ton of sleep over it. He really care's about you
and Mulder, Dana. We all do....and it's hard to see what's
bee n happening to you guys. You two are our friends and we
hate to see you suffer. This disk will only make you
suffer. Everything on it is a death trap and if those men
get a hold of you, your history. That's why you have to
promise that you'll be careful. They won't harm Mulder, but
they will hurt you.....they'll stop at nothing to get what
they want and save themselves."

"What? This is stupid.....I don't even know who those men
are. Are their names in there? And why won't they harm
Mulder?" Dana motioned to the screen. "Does it say what
happened to Samantha or where she is?"

Langly nodded, "It has a lot of stuff on it...." he moved
aside so that she could sit down next to him. "It doesn't
just have Samantha's whole hi story but it has Mulder's as
well. It has this elaborate plan to rid him of the FBI
and....." his voice trailed off.

Byers continued, "But they never planned to kill him. They
figured that the only way they could hurt him was through
you, so that's how they cont rolled him and will continue to
control him." he shook his head. "They've been doing
something to the X-files for a long time now, and they want
ed to use you for their cover-up. They figured that your
skepticism would keep you in line long enough so that they
could re-categorize the files into sub-files and mess them
up enough to throw you off." he paused so th at Langly could
continue.

"That's when they asked Mulder to come back in and work with
the X-Files. For some odd reason they like to watch Mulder
search for the truth w hen it's been right under his nose
the whole time. For the past four years they've been burying
the secrets deeper and deeper in the governments secret
warehouses and storerooms. Some of the secrets are buried
so deep that they have to go through channels and channels
of informers and paper work to be released for review and
even then they are still hidden from the public and all of
those who want to know the truth. It's all a conspiracy, a
conspiracy against the public and you. It's scary to think
about what they might have in those warehouses....we've
already found a half of dozen records on the remains of
aliens and alien space crafts." Langly typed something on
the keyboard and waited for it's response.

"All of what Mulder has told you about in the past exists.
There are these places in the Pentagon and else where, that
they store all of the evidence from your X-File cases and
places that they store things that aren't of human kind or
human. For instance the Alien Fetus." Langly clicked o n a
small Icon in the corner and a picture of a flask with a
small fetus popped up. "Remember this Dana?"

Dana nodded but did not say anything.

"These places all exist." Frohike said walking back into the
room. "For a while I must admit that I thought Mulder was
crazy...but it's all true. These men have been hiding the
truth from the public for close to eighty years and
now......you've got the truth. The truth about Mulder's
sister....the truth about UFO sightings and abductions.
There's so much that we haven't even uncovered yet, but
it's all here."

"Dana, the truth will only hurt Mulder......" Langly
whispered. "If he finds that he's been right all
along......You don't want to know the rest. "

"Yes I do." Dana cried. She took the mouse and began
clicking on icons that lined the top of the screen. "I want
to know who *THEY* are. I want to know who that one man
is." she mumbled. "I have to know who the Cancer Man is."
she began to click faster, but Langly laid a hand on hers.
Sh
e could tell by his hands intensity that he did not want her
to get to ahead of herself. She was getting to worked up
over everything.

"Just ask us who he is." Frohike whispered . "We'll tell
you."

Dana looked up at them questionably, "Who is he?" she asked.
"He knows Mulder's family...he was friends with his father.
I have to know who he is." she could feel tears coming to
her eyes. "Why protect Mulder and kill me....why am I so
different from him? I shouldn't have to be afraid to know
the truth about everything. Mulder and I are no different!"

Frohike laid a hand gently on her shoulder. "Your right,
you and Mulder aren't any different. It's just that maybe
your not ready to know about everything." he whispered.
"None of us were prepared to see what was on that disk.
Sure, we had our ideas about what was happening, but we
never expected this. We've just told you the basic outline
of the disk.... the re is still so much that you don't
know."

Dana sniffled and shook her head, "I don't care about the
other stuff on the disk....I just want to know who that man
is." she paused. "And I want to know what happened to
Samantha Mulder. I have to know....for Mulder's sake." The
more she thought about Mulder the more she wanted to cry.
All of the love she had felt for him four years ago was
suddenly coming back to her with a serge of power and it
scared her. She couldn't possibly tell him how she felt.

She began to shake violently even though she was not cold.
Fate had brou ght her and Mulder back together, but to do
what? There were so many unanswered questions that she had
for these men before her, but she didn't know how to ask
them. She was still so confused about everything and ever
yone involved. She didn't even understand how Crawford had
found all of the information. His wife had told her that
he had been working on a kidnapping case and got shot by the
kidnappers. Either his wife had lied to her or she didn't
know the truth either.

Langly handed her a print out. "When you think Mulder is
ready to hear the truth you can give him this. It's got
most of the information about Samantha....or at least up to
five years ago. There's nothing after that. When you want
to know more about everything else, come back to us. We'll
help you out."

"So are you saying that she's alive?" Dana asked hopefully.
"There wasn't a death date on the screen and I still don't
understand what all of this is." she felt like crawling out
of her skin. If they had killed Crawford for what he found
out they would most certainly come after her or Mulder.
Most likely her, but she didn't want to think about it. It
was all to scary to even consider.

"We don't know if she's alive, but I'm sure Mulder would
just like to kno w what happened to his sister." Frohike
said sadly. "We've been more fascinated with all of the
other stuff. At first we thought that Samantha's file was
the only thing on the disk, but after we started searching
we stumbled on to a whole bunch of other stuff, as you can
see."

Dana nodded, "Who is that man?" she asked again. "You guys
are deliberat ely not telling me who he is. Does Mulder
work for him or something?" she was afraid to hear the
answer to her own question. <Although.> she thought. <If
Mulder is working for him that would explain why they
wouldn' t hurt him.>

The men shook their heads in unison. "No, not quit." Byers
mumbled. "Are you sure your ready for the truth?" he asked.
"The truth will make you absolutely sick."

"Yes, now tell me already." she cried. "I have to know who
he is and what he is." Her anger was really beginning to
show now. They were trying to get around her question
and she wasn't about to leave before she got the answer.
"Tell me dammit, I have to know. I just have to know who he
is."

"Calm down!" Langly mumbled. "Your not making this any
easier on us. "

Byers stepped forward and took the packet of papers of that
she was holding. "Are you sure your ready to find out the
Mulder's secrets?" he asked.

Dana nodded, "Come on. I just need to know."

"He's Samantha's father." Frohike answered. "There.....now
you know the truth."
