Sure, fine, whatever. Authors note: I wrote this story before The 6th Extinction aired, so that explains why they kiss for the first time and why it isn't anything like The 6th Extinction or Amor Fati. E-mail- juls01@tstar.net Last Kiss by Juls Scully looked at Skinner, annoyed. "You're both liars." She said, jerked her hand out of Skinner's grasp, and left. He turned around and gave Diana Fowley a cold stare. If looks could kill, Diana would be dead by now. Scully entered the basement office and looked up at the ceiling, searching for something. Then she noticed a smoke detector and stepped on a chair and reached for it. A second later the phone rang and she looked at the phone, then back at the smoke detector, as if confirming her suspicions that there must be a hidden camera in it. She stepped off the chair, moved towards the phone, but hesitated before picking it up. "Hello?" She answered. "Agent Scully, Dr. Sandoz. I'm sorry-I didn't know how else to reach you. There's something-" Scully interrupted in a hushed tone, "Dr. Sandoz, I-I don't know if this is a secure line." "Yes, all right, but I realized something. The letters Albert translated on the artifact... I know what they are." "What they are?" "Yes. They're coordinates, Agent Scully." "For what?" "For genes. They're symbols for gene clusters-- the human genome." Scully was shocked and didn't respond. "Are you there?" He asked. "Yeah." She said quickly. "I think it's all here." He continued, "The map to our human genetic makeup, every gene on every chromosome-- proof of what I've been saying. If only we could find more pieces." In the background, Scully could hear some horses acting up. "Dr. Sandoz? Hello?" She said and then heard a gunshot. She glanced up at the smoke detector. "Dr. Sandoz?" She asked again. Then she heard the cell phone that Dr. Sandoz had click off. Ivory Coast 36 hours later An African man was speaking Swahili and showed the rubbing of the artifact to several other African men. They answered him and he turned to Scully. She was dressed in a very lovely long-skirted beige outfit. The man said, "It's the same. I'll take you, but they are afraid." Scully followed the man down to the water's edge; he took her to a certain spot and left her there. She knelt down and brushed the sand away from a much larger structure with inscriptions on it. She looked around and realized something, then slowly stood up, as the waves passed over her feet. She finally saw something, that for years, Mulder had always wanted her to see, and now the irony of it was that he wasn't there with her to see her reaction. My version of Season Premiere Time unknown Special Agent Dana Scully stood next to many workmen, watching as they pulled the spaceship out of the ground with machinery. She couldn't stop thinking about how Mulder would react, that is, if she ever got to see him. She turned to a young man in his twenties with brownish hair and said, "Let's go over this again." He continued for her, "Under restricted access, ship this to Washington DC. Do not let anyone know that this took place." The man looked at her, waiting for a response. She brushed away some hair that the wind tossed into her face, took a deep breath and then said, "Right", but still had this feeling of dread inside that everything was going to go wrong. Scully decided that this would be a good time to leave. After she made sure that the people operating the project knew what they were doing, she went to the airport to start on the journey back to DC, although, she did not have any wanderlust. Scully felt that she had very limited time. She had to get back to Mulder, no matter what. After what felt like forever, the airplane finally arrived at DC and Scully got off. While waiting for her suitcase at the luggage carousel, she saw herself in a mirror and was surprised at what she saw. She had dark circles under her eyes, but that was understandable since she had barely gotten any sleep in the past few days, her hair was not how she liked it at all, and she had been wearing the same clothes since the day before. She saw her luggage, quickly grabbed it and pushed her way out of the crowd and out of the airport. "Agent Scully?" She heard someone near her call out. She saw a man dressed in a suit walking briskly over to her. "Where are you going?" He asked her. "Uh-if you don't mind me asking, who are you?" She asked suspiciously. The man opened his mouth and made a "O" sound. "I'm terribly sorry." He looked around, as if he thought he was being followed. Then he lowered his voice. "My name is Bruce Rivard. I work at the Sciences Lab at the Georgetown Hospital." And continued, "I thought you knew that I would be here." In the distance, dark clouds passed by and lightning sparked up the almost dark sky. "And what do you want from me?" Scully asked. "I don't want anything from you." Bruce said as he looked passed her, to another man that was dressed in a suit, with graying hair and was sort of chubby. Immediately, he turned the other way. Scully craned her neck the other way to see whom the man was trying to get away from. But that only accomplished Bruce grabbing her arm and she was forced to follow him out into the parking lot. After he came to a white Ford Explorer, he loosened his grip and she jerked her arm away from him, then asked, "What the hell do you think you are doing?" He looked at her with a hurt expression, then said, "I was only trying to protect you." "From what?" He sighed. "Now that they have your partner where they want him, they want to get you." Her look softened. Then she asked slowly, "How do you know this?" Bruce looked to the ground and shook his head. "I'm not even supposed to be here with you, or even telling you this information. They already heard that you found that spaceship and as we are speaking, they are in Africa getting it." Scully closed her eyes briefly, then when she opened them he went on, "Right now my life is in danger," and after a pause he looked into her eyes, then continued, "and so is yours." "So, what are you going to do about it?" She asked, not very worried about what he just said. "The only thing I can do." He answered. "If you want your partner saved, then you should come with me." He said and unlocked the passenger side of the Explorer. Scully didn't know what else to do except to conform. She was getting very anxious to see Mulder again. She remembered the last she saw him as she rode with Bruce to the hospital. Skinner sat in the hospital hallway as she approached. He looked up at Scully, his expression serious. "They just told me he's in the special psychiatric unit." Scully said, in a 'don't give me any bullshit tone'. "I told you on the phone..." Skinner started. "No, you said that there was bad news. You didn't tell me what was wrong." After Skinner didn't reply, she continued, "Look, I'm sorry. It just took me three flights to get here." Skinner decided to talk, "I don't know what to do, Dana. No one else does, either. I knew you'd want to be here to see him, to talk to the doctors." There was a long, tense pause between them. Then Skinner took her hand, which made Scully even more agitated than she already was. "What? What is it?" She asked and followed him into a door. Diana Fowley stood in front of several monitors of patients in psychiatric cells. One of the patients was Mulder. Scully watched in distress as he paced the small area of the cell. "Thank you for coming. He was asking for you last night." Diana said to her. Scully glanced at Diana, then looked back at the monitor. A doctor entered the room. "You really shouldn't be in here." He said. "What's wrong with him? This man right here," She pointed to the monitor, "Fox Mulder?" As if he heard his name being spoken by her, Mulder turned to the camera and started screaming Scully's name. They all looked at the monitor. The doctor answered her question, "We don't know what's wrong with him and we don't know what to do for him. He's got extremely abnormal brain function but there are no signs of stroke. We're waiting to run more tests." "Waiting for what?" "He's extremely violent. With what we've given him he should be in barbiturate coma, but there's brain activity in areas we've never seen before." "I want to talk to him." Scully said. "No, he's a danger to anyone." "Not to me." Scully said, very certain. Diana turned to Scully and asked, "Can we speak in the hall?" "About what?" Scully asked defensively. Skinner opened the door and said, "Agent Scully." "Scully!" Mulder yelled at the camera. When Scully looked at the monitor, she saw him looking straight at her. "Agent Scully?" She heard Bruce say and turned into his direction. "Are you alright?" Slightly embarrassed, she answered, "Yes. I'm fine." Then she got out of the car. They silently walked up to the hospital. "Do you want some coffee?" He asked before they entered the building. "No, thank you." "It's going to be a long time before we ever get a break." He said. It still looked like it was going to rain sometime during the day. "Are you sure you don't want to take up the offer?" Scully was silent for a moment, then made up her mind. "Yes." Again, they were silent the rest of the way. Bruce went a different way than everyone else usually did to the Sciences Lab. Scully guessed it was because he didn't want to be found. After making sure that no one else was in the lab with them, Bruce locked the door. "Alright, here is what I want to do." He took a deep breath, ready to explain. "I want you to get into some doctors' scrubs and walk down to the psychiatric unit. Try not to get anyone to notice you. "Whenever I see you in the security camera in the psychiatric unit, I will have to turn off all of the security cameras in order for you to get Agent Mulder. The only way that I can that is to turn off the main power." Scully raised an eyebrow. "So we're going to be left in the dark." She said. "Yes. And once this happens, people are going to obviously know that something is wrong, and so you are going to have to get out of there fast." "What about you?" She asked. "I'll be long gone by then." He said. "Well, let's get started." After Scully got into the doctors' scrubs, he gave her a syringe filled with clear liquid. She glanced at him with a questioning look. "Just in case." He said. She just stuffed it in her pocket and headed for the door. Before she unlocked it, he said, "Good luck." She hesitated, turned around and gave him a hug. "Thank you." He was surprised. Then he replied, "No, thank you for trusting me." They exchanged their good-byes and she left. She knew exactly where Mulder was, since Bruce had told her. She realized that this would be the first time that she would ever go into the psychiatry ward. Hopefully the last, she thought to herself. After walking down the hallway and avoiding many people, she finally reached Mulder's cell. She could hear him pounding on the door and could faintly hear him yelling her name out. She took out the key that Bruce had given her and as soon as she inserted it in the keyhole, all the power shut off. She unlocked the door and opened it. Mulder grabbed Scully's arm, pulled her into his cell, and barely shut the door before gunshots were made. When there were no more shots, everything seemed quiet and unusual. "Mulder?" Scully asked from the darkness. He put his hand on her back and said, "They're gone." "Would if they locked us in here?" Scully asked. "They didn't." He said positively. He led her to the door, which only opened up to more darkness. "Go left." Mulder said. "How do you know?" "Just go! Hurry." He said, irritated. They quickly went left. Mulder led her through many doors until finally, up ahead, there was a red glowing EXIT sign. "How did you know the way out?" Scully asked. "Be quiet." He whispered quickly. Immediately, Scully was pushed against the wall and then afterwards she felt a bullet whiz past her head. "Go, go, go!" Mulder yelled and they raced to the exit. They made it out just before the person took another shot. Their eyes took time to adjust to the light that wasn't even very bright outside. Mulder noticed a dark window tinted car sitting outside of the doorway; the driver's side window caught the path of the last bullet that was shot. He walked up to the car and opened the door. The man that was inside laid to the side and blood slid out of the hole in his head. "Oh, my god." Scully said. "Bruce." "Scully, we've got to get out of here." Mulder said urgently. He got Bruce's body out of the car, and quickly got into the driver's seat. "We can't just leave him there." He heard Scully say. "Well, we're going to have to. Get into the car, Scully." He demanded. "Mulder, are you hiding something from me?" "If you don't get into the car right now, that man is going to come out of that door and kill us." He said calmly. She finally got into the car and then he sped off, making the tires squeal. Scully told Mulder about what happened when she went to Africa and how Bruce had helped her, but he just drove on silently, already knowing what happened. After about two hours, they ended up on a solitary country road. The whole sky was covered in dark, gray, fluffy clouds. Scully looked at Mulder, who was rubbing his head with his hand, but still drove perfectly. "Head hurting?" She asked. He took his time to answer. "Yes." "Do you want me to drive?" He shook his head and put both hands on the steering wheel. "You haven't said anything the whole way here." He gave Scully a quick stare, as if saying, `So?' Then he looked back at the road. A black car with dark-tinted windows passed him. Another car got into the lane next to him and one got behind him. Immediately the car in front of him pressed on the brakes and the one behind him went into the other lane. Mulder reacted quickly and stepped on the brakes too. The car that was next to him swerved into his lane and Mulder had to swerve into the grass. Even though he had slowed down he was still going about fifty, which made the car flip over. The car stopped skidding after a few seconds and Mulder had hit his head and became unconscious. Mulder came to, lifted his head off the steering wheel and noticed how much strength it took to do something so easy. He looked over at Scully, who was in the passenger seat. She was unconscious. Blood dripped down his forehead. He blinked, feeling light- headed and almost out of breath. There was not anymore of that whining pain in his head. He opened the door and heaved himself out of the car. Rain poured down on him as he took a step and staggered forward to the other side. With all the strength he had, Mulder pulled Scully out of the car as carefully as he could; then fell backwards of weariness. He raised her head off the ground and stroked her forehead tenderly. She opened her eyes and smiled when she saw Mulder. "Hold me for a little while." She said to him. He pulled her close to him, cradling her against his body and warming her. They looked into each other's eyes. Scully couldn't tell if there were tears running down his cheeks or if it was just the rain pouring down on them. He leaned close to her and gave her their first and last kiss. After Mulder pulled away he looked back into her eyes and wiped the blood off her face. Scully smiled again and said weakly, "Mulder, I love you." She didn't need to tell him that, because he already knew, but he did want to hear it anyway. He smiled too, and whispered back, "I love you too, Scully." She closed her eyes to rest a little, but instead she fell limp in his arms. He held her tight, yelled her name, stroked her hair and rocked her back and forth in his arms. If there hadn't already been tears, there were many now, as he was desperate for her to come back to him. After a while, the cold and exhaustion made him surrender to sleep. He lay forward, next to Scully and knew that he wouldn't be waking up from this sleep. Georgetown Hospital 11:32 p.m. Walter Skinner and a doctor were in the waiting room, having a conversation. The doctor said, "With the trauma to his head, there would have been no way that he could have woken up, much less walk to the other side of the car..." `Last Kiss' Oh, where oh where can my baby be The Lord took her away from me She's gone to heaven so I've got to be good So I can see my baby when I leave... this world We were out on a date in my daddy's car We hadn't driven very far There in the road, straight ahead A car was stalled, the engine was dead I couldn't stop, so I swerved to the right I'll never forget the sound that night The cryin' tires, the bustin' glass The painful scream that I... heard last When I woke up the rain was pourin' down There were people standing all around Something warm was runnin' in my eyes But I found my baby somehow that night I raised her head, and then she smiled and said Hold me darling for a little while I held her close; I kissed her our last kiss I found the love that I knew I would miss Now she's gone, even though I hold her tight I lost my love, my life... that night --------------------
