Mulder was back on his feet and ready to take his place in the basement, with Doggett as his partner. While she was at home taking care of her pregnancy, he was getting to know the man who had watched her back all this time. It was uneasy... After a long day of paper work, Mulder was coming back home to Scully. He had moved in with her when she had began her time off. And, he would stay until she didn't need him anymore, which meant after the baby was a few days, or weeks, old. They had made a deal that it wouldn't come between them and he was keeping his promise. Mulder walked to the front door and heard unusual noise inside the apartment. He put the key in the lock, but the door openned by itself when he applied not even a bit of pressure on it. What he saw took his breath away... Scully was standing in the middle of the living room, her eyes closed, her hands caressing her belly, singing and dancing. "La mer... Qu'on voit danser le long des golfes clairs... A des reflets d'argent... La mer... Des reflets changeants... Sous la pluie... La mer... Au ciel d't, confond... Ses blancs moutons... Avec les anges si purs... La mer... Bergre d'azur... Infinie... Voyez... Prs des tangs... Ces grands roseaux mouills... Voyez... Ces oiseaux blancs... Et ces maisons rouilles... La mer... Les a bercs... Le long des golfes clairs... Et d'une chanson d'amour... La mer... A berc mon coeur pour la vie... La vie..." All this time, he had stood there watching and listenning to her without her ever even noticing. She was beautiful, he thought. But, she was also crazy. In the past few days, her pregnancy had become more difficult and dangerous for both her and the baby. She must have been feeling well. He walked up to her and patted her shoulder. "Mulder!" she jumped out of nervousness. "Scully?" he gave her the look that asked her an explanation. "Mulder..." she grinned as she caressed his cheek with her hand. "I am doing very good today." she confessed. "I just witnessed that..." he replied, still intrigued. "I thought you couldn't sing." he placed a remark about their time in some woods. "You were right." she responded. "I couldn't sing. Now, I can and I am happy about it." she giggled. "How come?" he wondered. "How come I'm happy about singing, or able to sing?" she answered with a question. "How come you're able to sing?" he repeated. "Is it a hormonal thing that happens to every pregnant women?" he asked. "I don't know. I was only practicing a melody for our baby and my voice suddenly sounded good." she smiled. "I guess we'll have to open an X file." she kid him. "Very funny..." he laughed along with her. "So, what were you singing? It didn't sound english." he noticed. "Right again, Sherlock." she sat down on the couch with him. "I was singing the french version of "Beyond the Sea"." she admitted. "Your father's favourite song..." Mulder remembered. "Why the french version?" he demanded. "In hommage to Charles Trenet..." she responded. "Who?" Mulder was confused. "Charles Trenet is the original author behind it all and he passed away today." she grinned up at Mulder. "Oh! I'm sorry!" Mulder looked down at her. "You don't have to be since I didn't know the man. But, thank you anyway..." she was glad he showed concern. "So, you were sharing a tender moment with out son?" Mulder was cut off. "Or daughter..." Scully interrupted him. "I was already telling that little rugrat of ours about his, or her, grandfather." she confirmed. "Too bad I have nothing good to share about my family..." he suddenly became too self conscious. "That's not true, Mulder." she tried to recomfort him. "Samantha was a very good sister to you. Your mother might have been distant from you, but she always loved you. And, so did your father. So, they might not have been extraordinary people, but they were your people. They were your family and they loved you, even if they didn't show it a lot." "Why are you so good to me, Scully?" Mulder felt depressed. "Probably because you are my best friend and the father of our child." she began. "I love you too much to let yourself on autodestruction." she tried to make him smile. "You'll have to be strong for our baby." "You love me?" Mulder turned around with teary eyes to look at her. "Yes! And, I assume you love me back too. Otherwise, our friendship wouldn't have lasted this long." she told him. "Oh!" he turned away when he heard the term friendship because he thought she meant real love. "What's wrong, Mulder?" she became worried. "Don't you love me?" "I do..." he silently started to cry. "More than you'll ever know... I'm way passed the friendship level of love you're talking about..." he confessed. "But, I thought you didn't want this child to come between us and ruin the wonderful friendship we have built over the years." she specified. "Yeah!" he admitted. "I said that to sound nice. But, deep inside, I wished you would have asked me to be more than just a father to our baby." he went on. "I only wanted this to bring us closer..." "Oh! Mulder!" Scully mumbled as she cuddled up against him. "I thought we were slowly getting there already..." she whispered. "What?" he sounded surprised. "When you moved in to take care of me for the last few days of my pregnancy and first few days as a mother, I thought we were taking a big leap from being friends to being a family." she confessed. "I was secretly hoping you'd plainly stay after our baby was born." "What?" he still was astonished by her confession. "There's a lot of options open to us..." she started as she sat straight and began making hands gestures to support her saying. "One: we can stay friends, live apart and have our kid call you dad, or uncle. Two: we can stay friends, live together and have our kid call you dad, or uncle. Three: we can begin a real family, live together, have our kid call you dad and have me call you pumpkin." she paused. "Pumpkin?" he murmured as he turned to take her in his arms. "Or any other little love word you want me to call you..." she mumbled. "How about I call you Dana and you call me Fox?!?" he snuggled against her neck and placed a kiss on her skin. "That tickles, Fox!" she giggled. "That sounds good, Dana!" he replied and he kissed her. "But, only if you'd marry me..." he stopped. "What?" she felt her breath shorten in her throat. "Would you be my wife?" he asked once again. "That was quick!" Scully became cold in an instant. "What's wrong?" Mulder wondered. "We've known each other for eight years... We know each other inside out... What's wrong about getting married together?" he tried to make her look at him. "I don't know, but it is kind of sudden..." she reacted. "Are you having doubts?" Mulder demanded. "Yes!" she confessed. "Why?" he asked. "Because I love you, I do... But, are you asking me to marry you only because I'm carrying your child?" she finally looked at him. "This is a trick question, isn't it?" Mulder grinned, but lost his humor quite fast. "The answer is that I want you to be my wife, no matter what. I guess the current situation just makes it easier for me to ask you." he blurted out. "What if we are not sexually compatible?" she worried. "You know me... I thought about that too..." Mulder smiled. "But, it doesn't matter to me. After all, we've already been through eight years of abstinence." he joked. "Plus, I have scientific proof that sexual incompatibility is something two people very much in love with one another can find a way to work out." he lied. "Oh! Yeah?!" Scully finally broke into a smile. "Where is it?" "I'll show it to you if you say yes to my question..." he replied. "What question was that again?" she teased him. "Will you marry me, Dana Scully?" Mulder rhymed. "I'll do you the honor, Fox Mulder!" Scully wasn't quite as successfull with the poetry. "Now, show me!"
